I don’t know a lot about headphones, but I’ve absolutely been loving the NTH-100’s. Your actual knowledge helped me to understand WHY I like them. Great review! -Bad Boy Buck
I bought these rode nth 100 as my first professional headphones and I gotta say, this is the best in the market. I wear it for 8+ hours of long sessions and they are so comfortable. I can hear even minor imperfections clearly which even my clients can’t hear. No matter how loud the voiceover is, your ears won’t be affected. Totally love it ! I just wish there was a hard case cover with it tho. Had to buy aftermarket 10$ one.
I just listened to the miked sound demo and I think people need to be careful with the hype marketing. I like the headphones, I want one, but I know I need to manage my expectation if I'm actually gonna buy it. Here are several negative things I heard in the sound demo. If any of you have already tried it I hope you can reply in the comment and tell me if these things are true or not in the real world. (1) It doesn't have enough high frequency, sounds a bit dull, even for a headphones that's designed to be flat sounding. Also even when boosted with EQ, it doesn't really translate sparkly kind of high frequencies well (maybe about 5K - 7K Hz). (2) The low has a noticeable roll off maybe at 50 or 60 Hz, so it doesn't show sub bass very well. (3) The transient is not fast enough to show percussion hits accurately. Could be ok enough for voice, but wont be ideal for music production.
Mine arrived day before from Sweetwater. I confirm your points 1 and 2 fully. They absolutely do not sound flat and are uncomfortably dull, hovering on the margin of sounding colored; just wanted to be candid and honest. Now, I say this with hesitation after reading Mike’s response to another comment; he cautions about this dull aspect and wants us to retrain the ear especially if shifting from Sonys. I am guilty of my resting aural tuning with the MDR-V6 which are discontinued. But again, my other reference is the 7506. I was trying these for recording and mixing singing vocals. Here’s the tough part. I know these are unusable for my work, yet I want to keep them for the comfort. These are built fabulously and are one of the most comfortable phones in my experience. I hope this helps.
To me it seems clear that Rode is targeting the 770 Pro’s with these cans so I was a little disappointed that other, far cheaper headphones were mentioned and used in this video but not the most likely competitor. Are these cans worth upgrading to over the 770 pros or are the 770 Pro’s still king of comfort and performance (for the price)? Still, very informative video, thanks Mike :)
I bought these when they first come out, and I've given them more than their fair chance, and they have come up short for me. I got my first pair, loved the audio quality, loved everything about them, but within 2 months there was a piece of plastic near the earbuds that failed, and rendered them useless. Rode's customer service is top notch, as I went through them, and had another pair fairly quickly, no fuss no muss...fast-forward three months later second pair broke, same issue. I promise I'm not hard on these things, but I am a professional voice artist, and I do use them a lot. I got a third pair, same issue....4th pair and this time customer service mentions "oh yes, we know about the issue, we have fixed it and you will be getting the newest version where that won't happen anymore"...and I sit here with yet another crack in the same exact place (held on by a screw at least this time, but still wobbly as heck and I have another piece of electrical tape around them again). At least this time it's been over 6 months, but still, same fail point. I'm not going to bother with customer service again because they've already gone above and beyond and after 2 years I'm tired of the back and forth with them. I'm going to move on (I have a lot of other headphones, but I was so excited about these ones! But now I get to research new ones, and that's fun too I guess). Anyways, I do not recommend these for headphones, but Rode is a top notch company as far as working with them, so that was nice at least (and I do still love the microphones I have from them...though I primarily use my Shure 🤭)
@@edmsmash869 I already got rid of them and switched back to using my Philips Fidelio and my audio technicas for narration! If you search it online though there are tons of pics (because this was a common issue after all)
Whether you personally liked the headphones or not, your tone and delivery with explanations are very professional, easy to understand and family friendly. I’ve been looking into a good pair of headphones for getting the job of audio engineering and podcasting, and for the price point and features that this pair has, this may be the ones i’ll go with. I may also look into that free online course of yours. Is the software you use a traditional one to use for most tasks to accomplish with audio work?
Thank you for your honest review. I’m an entry-level podcaster, content creator & translator, and I’ve been struggling to find quality headphones at an affordable price point which remain comfortable for extended wear. Just wanted to say thank you for your again.
Thanks! I just ordered these (while listening to you). In my part of the world (Europe) they're about $200, tax included. I recently got the less expensive Sony 7506 which fold up nice and small(ish), so they're for out of the house recording, whereas the Røde will be for home recording. If I like them - we'll see.
Thank you very much for this helpful review! The NTH-100 has the potential to become my daily driver. I look forward to the in-depth durability tests. But Rode has never let me down.
This is a really great source for everything related to vocal recording and equipment as well as superb professional advice. I love how I don't feel like I'm talked down to here. I HATE being a noob but I guess we all have to start somewhere and at sometime. I do have a question that I just know will solicit lots of laughs from the pros around here but I'm confused about something in regards to delivering the end product to the customer. In the event that I provide some voice over tracks for a customer maybe in Fiverr or really anywhere....what is the standard format? Mono track or Stereo? I mean I have now seen many YTubers showing their recordings at 24bit Mono. Is that right? Is this more about coming down to what the customer asks for more than anything else? So with an XLR, I guess its standard to record in mono and then convert to stereo in the software editor before adding any additional effects or edits? I'm a bit confused. Thanks.
These sounds absolutely perfect. But I'll want to see frequently response graphs before I buy one just to make sure it's what I'm looking for. But If it has the sound I want then these sound PERFECT
Harman curve isn’t about adjusting the FR to sound better. Its trying to make headphones sound like flat speakers since the shape of human ears change the FR when the sound reaches the eardrums. So the FR of a neutral sounding headphones is a lot different from neutral speakers. A headphones with FR adhering to the Harman Curve should sound quite neutral and accurate.
Thanks for doing such an in-depth review. These are certainly high-quality headphones. Your comment about the Sony 7506's having a hyped high-end is something I've heard before, and for my hearing (I don't hear the high frequencies as well), they are actually the better choice for me during post-production, so I'll keep using them. However, the Rode headphones may be a better choice for monitoring out in the field to eliminate the "live" sound to better hear what's being recorded.
I'm super stoked to get a pair of these in the future... I've been streaming on Twitch for the past 6 months using the OneOdio A70s. They have the pleather cups... and after my typical four hour streams my ears are always sweaty and sore. I've looked for so long for a headphone like the old Astro A40s I used when I was just gaming instead of streaming. This looks and from what you've reviewed here sounds exactly like what I'm looking for... thank you.
Hi Mike, just wanted to let you know that I bought these headphones and they're absolutely brilliant. I love them. Thank you so much for the recommendation, I truly appreciate it.
It's nice to see Røde really get into the race on headphones. Sounds like they'd be perfect for my Zoom F3 field recorder if they could fold up and more safely go on trips.
Be careful, they have a high failure rate on the size locking mechanism part, because it is plastic that holds metal, Check and see that is a 70% failure part, one even broke in a few weeks, an other in 2 months an other in 6 months,so eventually that is the braking point on all the NTH-100 headphones, I wish Rode will recall them and release NTH-101 , replace the problem part with either full metal , or metal with over-mold plastic, double thickness head pad and easier to replace headphone pads and sell it for 170€ - 200€ , because they are worth at least that much.
I had this breakage happen to me and reached out to Rode. I could not find my receipt for the purchase, they could not find that I registered them BUT they are honoring the lifetime warranty so I am shipping them out to be evaluated for repair or replacement for free.
Great review, Mike. My only concern would be the comfort, as I have big ears that stick out enough to make most headphones uncomfortable after a short time, which is why I love my Bose QC headphones and their angled ear cups. However, these look fantastic and have amazing features for the price point. I may need to check them out! Thanks for the video.
Hey Mike, ever taken a look at the K361 or K371 from AKG? They have some of the most neutral frequency responses seen in headphones, so they might be good for those who want to both monitor and mix with the same headphones if they can’t use studio monitors
I bought the K371BT to replace my DT770 Pros. The headband broke very quickly and they're nowhere near as comfortable on my large ears. I can't recommend them.
Thanks Mike. I’ve been looking for a new set of headphones that are very comfortable. I loved your video and the idea of these headphones. I just ordered them through your link. Thanks for everything you, do keep it up.
Thanks for the thoughtful review, Mike. I'm becoming more of a Ride fanboy every day. I've actually been looking for a decent set of monitor cans, so your timing is impeccable. Cheers! p.s. those glasses look good on you.
Good day Mike. Excellent video as usual. For the last 6 years I've been rockin the" Audio-technica ATH M50X's" and absolutely love them. They're my only set of cans and they still work great, but it has been 6 years. Was going to buy another set this week but now I will give these a shot (really dig the review, thanks). Now I will have a backup pair. YIPPEEE!!!
I love the sound of my M50X but I need a pair that is less "noisy" in the booth. I move around a bit when I do VO and the AT squeaks loudly. Are these quieter?
Do you ever worry about an impedance mismatch affecting your monitor sound transparency? For example, if you used these relatively low-impedance headphones with the Audient id14 -which has an output impedance of about 23 ohms - would you use a headphone amp to compensate?
Are the red tips on your glasses to keep you from poking yourself in the eye when you are putting your glasses on and don't have your glasses on to see clearly? [I think I'm being funny but I am also very curious, Sir.]
Excellent review. When you mentioned the SONY MDR-7506 I felt attacked (🤣) as that's what I use. I'm not a headphone guy so I had no idea that they brighten the sound. But now I know what I'm replacing them with! Thanks.
The 7506's have their place. If you go with the Rode's (or practically any other headphones) expect them to sound duller by comparison because the Sony's are extra bright. Let your ears adjust before you judge.
Great review brother!!! I think ya sold me on a pair!!! I am also a fan of the Rode NT1! Honestly all my audio gear is made by Røde, ya I am a fanboy I guess!
Can you review the Plantronics BackBeat GO 810 Wireless Headphones, Active Noise Canceling Over Ear Headphones? I'm using those recreationally and to start my VO/VA journey.
I have a head of the size that cannot use most VR headsets and has broken headphones including the 770, wonder how this would work for me? Gotta coax a store to get a demo unit I can try out. Excellent video.
Thanks Mike for your Review. Something these days that would also be nice is Bluetooth module that plugs into the headphone jack. That way you could use also with your phone.
That's a thing. Look at the FiiO BRT3 or BTR5, EarStudio ES100, iFi GO blu, or Qudelix 5k. All of them are considered portable Bluetooth recievers. I personally own the BTR3, and I love it, but I've been thinking about getting the iFi GO blu or Qudelix 5k.
Is it weird that the first thing I listened to after my pair arrived was this video - just to be able to hear it how you were hearing it and give a little more context to your thoughts? 😂
Headphone from Rode... interesting first to see. The only things I'd like to see (that doesn't look apparent on these) is having angled drivers and large enough earcups to truly have "no-touch" ear experience. The Sennheiser HD 560S (and the modern 500 series in general) is my favorite in this regard, comfort wise. Accessory-wise and maintenance-wise, its good to see Rode thought it through with these with good materials while also being replaceable in the most important aspects (earpads / headband padding / cables). One thing though is that having the jack plug on both sides of the headphones, it probably makes them slightly unbalanced in response on both sides. V-MODA I think first encountered this with the M-100 back in the day, which also had the "switchable" cable from side to side. To solve it, they also included a plug to put in the side of the headphone that you weren't using the cable with to prevent the imbalance. Not sure how much that applies here to what these might need. I'm not too sure on the sound though just because the in-depth stuff isn't your forte and I don't have the best idea of its overall tonal balance. For your comments on frequency response and adjustments, Harmon curve is actually a specific tuning to make headphones sound more natural like what you'd experience on Studio monitors, which factors in the general effects of a mixing room has on frequency response with how your head then receives it. Its probably the closest to what you want, I think, for most headphones to be "neutral". After that though, I'd go into EQ to adjust as needed I think. Anyway, I want to try it!
I hope I don't miss it in the video, what do you think about the sub bass. You mentioned it's not boomy, but Im curious about how low can you hear clearly on the lower frequency. I found that even with expensive open back mixing headphones, many of them has noticeable roll off below 50 or 40 Hz.
I was wondering: what's your opinion on in-ear-monitors? I've been almost exclusively using etymotics for a while now and they do some things incredibly well: no bleed, great isolation, no sweating, flat fr, more detail retrieval. was wondering: what does a professional, like yourself, think about iems? any major drawbacks I'm unaware of?
Thank you. I loved the recording/mixing features focus of this review Mike. Especially the replaceable band pad. My ball head gets a lil fuzz now and again and just rips through the pad in a few months. Had to wrap my ATH M50s in bicycle tape
Thanks for your excellent review. I’m a location sound recordist and I’m wondering how much rubbing noise you get in the headphones when the cable gets rubbed. These microphonic cable rubbing noises make me crazy, and varies from make to make. Sometimes I’m not sure if it’s a cable rubbing problem, or a noise in the program sound. I am seriously thinking about getting a set of these Rode cans, but the non-folding aspect is problematic for me. My line of work can be very rough on equipment. I presently use Beyerdynamic DT250s in the field, and while exceptionally robust, don’t fold up either. I just deal with it.
Hi there. I have my guitar plugged into an amp and now I need a headset to plug in so that I can practice silently. What headset do you recommend? Thank you
Great review. I'm in the market for a new pair of over-ear wired cans and I own AKG K550 for over 9 yrs. Since I saw you have K550 or 553, how Rode compares to AKGs in terms of audio quality and frequency response. I really liked K550 sound profile and now I want a suitable replacement. I'm also considering Bayerdynamic DT700 Pro X but are they 2x better as they are 2x more expensive? Thank you.
Hi Mike! How are you? Great Review! thank you! I was wondering if you could help me with a decision: my shure srh 840 broke after 12 years (yes, it had a lot of creaking issues) and now I need to buy new ones. After seeing some reviews, including this one and an old one of yours about headphones for voice overs, I am between the Sennheiser HD 300 pro and the Rode NTH 100 (both recommended by you). Which one would you choose? I would be using them for recording vocals and voice overs, and for mixing when not using the main monitors. Also, my head is not that big so good clamping and no creaking would be best. Thanks so much! :)
Great review, but kinda missing a point, so would you mix on these, you´ve said yes, but did you actually mix like a voice over on these and compared to like your studio headphones or monitors you use these? I know that mixing on headphones is not recommended, but I still ask if it´s possible. Also I miss a frequency response chart on Rode´s website, would be a great to see how they are made and what are their capabilities. Would be great if they will be flat, but if they are not boosted in lows, mids or highs and sound natural, that could be great. I would love to get these in future to get a mixing on voice as I cannot put studio monitors in my setup right now.
@@Itslegitman I’ve got both. The rodes are better for long session usage. Fit over the ears better, are cooler and being able to change side of the cable is useful. I feel the dt770s are the clearer sounding though and the better for critical listening.
I'm Suprised they weren't £600 and only £150 and thats the first professional grade headphones I have seen that isn't overly expensive but these "sound" compelling to buy.
Fellow booth junkie here. I love the content. Thank you, Sir. I am interested in dabbling in voice-over for fun, and a bit of side income. Where would you recommend going to find work? Is Fiverr the go-to? Thanks in advance.
Nice video Mike, well done and very detailed as always. As someone who is looking to potentially get into voiceover work, does anyone here have any tips for getting started? Any info is welcome.
Wow very impressive talk on these Headphone, you definitely sold me on these for my work. A+ by the way Not sure if you know but the cords now comes in different colors. But thank you for your review and subscribe to you channel for more learning experience thank you definitely ordering mine today.
hello mike. you got my attention, with that Rode NTH headphone. can I ask, what was the make/brand of the headphone you used, to explain heat coming from it on to your hand?
Hi Mike... Yet another outstanding review! One question... when you switch the headphone cable from side to the other... is it wired internally so that the proper right/left stereo relationship is maintained? Thanks
Wanna get better at recording and editing voiceover?
My FREE class will get you there faster: geni.us/ConfigureReaper6
Didn't these break on you?
Not neutral tuning. Shame..
I don’t know a lot about headphones, but I’ve absolutely been loving the NTH-100’s. Your actual knowledge helped me to understand WHY I like them. Great review!

I am looking forward to your review of the Nh-100. 😉
Thanks for stopping by Tom! I'm looking forward to seeing your impressions of them. Huge fan of your channel!

Thank you your responsiveness in adding the "Comfort wearing glasses" section. I hope this information is beneficial to others as well.
Swappable jack is such a simple but much needed idea.
I appreciate the comment on how they feel with glasses. So often overlooked by others. Thanks.
My pleasure!
Two jacks! What a brilliant design for musicians. Great thorough review, Mike!
It really does help from a usability perspective! Thanks!

This is the exact question I have about these headphones.
What about the DT-700 Pro X?
@Sjef van Leeuwen - you mean you're returning the Rodes?
Avoid dt700 pro x. Worst headphones.. 0 details, only bass, nothing more. M50 for now my favorite..
@Sjef van Leeuwen did you give them burn in time? Burn in is usually at least 8 to 12 hours to eliminate those situations.

Wow. Rode have engineered a material that simultaneously conducts heat away without heating up. Incredible.

"I didn't really notice it until I went to compare it"
Literally true for almost all audio equipment.
The dual 3.5 jacks are such a nice little touch!

so with all the bass with ath m50s, whatcha think about the super flat sound of these?
@@KontrolStyle Have only used them for one day in the booth only. Let you know in a week or so. Will listen to some music with them today.
I love the sound of my M50X but I need a pair that is less "noisy" in the booth. I move around a bit when I do VO and the AT squeaks loudly. Are these quieter?
I'm happy with my DT770's, but if I was in the market for a pair of headphones I would definetly buy these
How do I set the headphone to stereo? Because I'm just hearing it on 1 side.
Was debating getting these but this review sold me, cheers brother, subbed, thank you!
Those Aussies at Rode are really thinking of great new ideas. I'm buying a pair of these.
I've just ordered straight away, thank you, great video!
Great review on NTH 100!
Outstanding review and for us VOs super informative !! Mike you did it again ! and the price is super !! Go RODE !
As usual, another comprehensive review!!! Very well engineered headphones!!!
Wow just launched ! And great review fantastic Rode 🤩
It would be nice for recreational listening. In the booth I think all Bluetooth codecs have too much latency.
Best headphones I've ever had.
Lct 440 pure vs at4040...
1. which is best for sound quality??
2.which is best for room noise isolation??
Love form Bangladesh.. 🇧🇩🇧🇩🇧🇩
Btw, Mike, any chance you can share details on your vid setup? Your lighting is excellent - would love a bts look!
They fit us big heads?
I've seen the clasps break in most users of these headphones, isn't that a deal breaker?
Greetings. can you compare them with Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO? who is better in terms of comfort, sound and noise isolation?
It’s a good honest review and I liked it. Thanks!
Is it weird that the first thing I listened to after my pair arrived was this video - just to be able to hear it how you were hearing it and give a little more context to your thoughts? 😂
I don't understand locking cables. If it yanks, I want it to come out, not take the headphones with it.
I used the 770 Pros and bought the Rode. Will use the Rode from now after comparing =)
which do you prefer? i want both but can only chose 1
@@AGsosa I would chose the Rode then.
Rode includes a rubber plug for the non cable side.
The review I looked for to determine if these are worth a purchase. Thank you.
I hope I don't miss it in the video, what do you think about the sub bass. You mentioned it's not boomy, but Im curious about how low can you hear clearly on the lower frequency. I found that even with expensive open back mixing headphones, many of them has noticeable roll off below 50 or 40 Hz.
Thanks for the great, in-depth review, Mike! I've ordered a pair and am excited to get them into the booth! Cheers :-)
Hope you enjoy them!
Thx for the review. What about the Rode compared to the Sony MDR-7506 Headphones, especially when in the field w/ lots of external noise?
I'm hopeful that the Alcantara will hold up for a long time, but the fact that it's replaceable is fantastic.
Thanks for this in-depth review!!
Thank you.
can you use a generic cable for the 3.5 mm jack?
Review so good you deserve 2 comments!
You're using a first gen nt1 mic. How do you like it compared to subsequent models?
Just started watching and already gave a thumbs up.......I know its going to be good.
It looks like they bleed more than they should for a voiceover purpose. I think you don't want to have any bleedings into your recording, right?
if you compare these headphones with bayerdynamic dt 900 x which one would be better?
Some really great design decisions from Rode. May have finally a replacement for by beloved DT770 pros.
Have you tried them? I’m stuck in between these and DT770 pro and can’t decide 😢
@@Itslegitman I’ve got both. The rodes are better for long session usage. Fit over the ears better, are cooler and being able to change side of the cable is useful. I feel the dt770s are the clearer sounding though and the better for critical listening.
Have you ever used koss headphones from milwaukee?,
I'm Suprised they weren't £600 and only £150 and thats the first professional grade headphones I have seen that isn't overly expensive but these "sound" compelling to buy.
I noticed a braille mark for "R" on the outside of the earphone by the yoke. Do they have a mark for "L" as well?
Never mind. I watched the video again. They do.
Fellow booth junkie here. I love the content. Thank you, Sir. I am interested in dabbling in voice-over for fun, and a bit of side income. Where would you recommend going to find work? Is Fiverr the go-to? Thanks in advance.
Halfway through watching I preordered a pair. Adult money for the win.
Nice video Mike, well done and very detailed as always. As someone who is looking to potentially get into voiceover work, does anyone here have any tips for getting started? Any info is welcome.
I love it I need two more pairs
how would you compare these to the sennheiser hd 280 pro's?
Wow very impressive talk on these Headphone, you definitely sold me on these for my work. A+ by the way Not sure if you know but the cords now comes in different colors. But thank you for your review and subscribe to you channel for more learning experience thank you definitely ordering mine today.
Amazing review! Sub’d.
hello mike. you got my attention, with that Rode NTH headphone. can I ask, what was the make/brand of the headphone you used, to explain heat coming from it on to your hand?
Sure. They're the AKG K553 MKII
Hi Mike... Yet another outstanding review! One question... when you switch the headphone cable from side to the other... is it wired internally so that the proper right/left stereo relationship is maintained? Thanks
The left to right is maintained.
I use Shure srh 440 studio headphones to listen to music as I hate unrealistic base
Thank you Mike.
Hi have you tried the isk hd9999?
