Cannon Type Wood Burning Stove 'Przysucha' - Full Restoration Project

- In this video, I restore an old rusty wood stove made in Poland in the 19th century. More about the restoration process: When I first saw it, I was shocked by its condition-full of rust, cracks, and even missing parts. One leg was completely gone, so I had to remake it, which took skill and patience.
The restoration process was challenging, especially while disassembling the stove. I encountered microfractures in the old cast iron, a common issue when cast iron is repeatedly heated and cooled over time. I explain why this happens and show how I carefully welded and reinforced the brittle areas to make them even stronger.
Key Features of the Stove:
Material: Cast iron, durable and excellent at radiating heat.
Design: A classic cylindrical "potbelly" shape. European version.
Known as: Cannon Stove in Germany; Koza (Goat) Style Stove in Poland; and some just name it Potbelly Stove, even though it doesn't have the precise shape of such a stove.
Details: Two doors (for wood loading and ash removal) and ornate legs.
Functionality: Compact, efficient, and highly collectible.
More about the stove: Based on the inscription "N°2 STAL PRZYSUCHA," it appears that the stove was manufactured in Przysucha, a town in central Poland with a notable history in metalworking and industrial production.
Historical Context of Przysucha's Metal Industry:
In 1739, Jan Dembiński established key industrial facilities in Przysucha, including a mill, paper mill, and ironworks. By 1777, the town hosted a large furnace, metallurgical workshop, tube production facility, sawmill, and paper factory. These developments positioned Przysucha as a significant center for metal production and craftsmanship in the region.
Despite its early industrial success, Przysucha faced challenges in the 19th century due to the depletion of local iron ore deposits and the lack of railway connections. These factors contributed to the decline of its metal industry. However, the town remained renowned for its skilled artisans, particularly locksmiths specializing in the production of locks, door latches, stoves, and metal accessories.
At the end of the video, you’ll see the fully restored stove in action during a test burn! If you love restoration projects and seeing antiques brought back to life, you won’t want to miss this one.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments-I’m happy to answer any questions!

Hi folks! This little stove gave me some tough moments, as you probably noticed, but patience and perseverance are the keys to any successful restoration-and I stuck with it! The end result is absolutely beautiful, and I honestly can’t stop admiring it. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do! 😍
Cheers, Johnny
This title to your video is misleading this is not a pot-belly stove. Not even close. this is a cylindracal stove. Pot-belly stoves have a mushroom shaped top and a buldged out centre section with a cast iron ring around them. They are also considerable bigger than this stove. I have a real pot-belly stove what you have is NOT it.
Hi there! After researching this type of stove, I discovered that its naming conventions vary significantly around the world. In the United States, "potbelly stoves" are described similarly to this design you mentioned. However, in Europe, the term "potbelly" is also used for cylindrical stoves like mine (the internet is full of them), albeit with some regional differences.
For example:
In Germany, these stoves are often referred to as "cannon stoves" because their shape resembles old cannon barrels.
In Poland, they are affectionately nicknamed "Koza" (or "Goat"). Interestingly, the name doesn’t reflect the shape-after all, goats have four legs, while some of these stoves stand on just three! Instead, the "Koza" nickname likely emerged as a cultural term, symbolizing the stove’s practicality, dependability, and its essential role in rural life, much like a goat in traditional farming.
When creating my video, I faced a challenge in choosing the right name. Ultimately, I settled on "Goat-Style Stove" to honor its Polish origin (please read the description) and to connect with a broader audience familiar with that term. However, I understand how this might confuse viewers who associate the design with terms like "potbelly" or who recognize only region-specific names and shapes.
This isn’t the first time I’ve encountered such a challenge when naming globally recognized objects. For instance, I once worked with a waffle maker, and the naming variations were just as diverse:
Italians called it "pizzelle",
Belgians had their own distinct type,
Slovaks and Poles each used unique terms.
Naming objects with rich regional histories can be tricky, as the "right" term depends heavily on cultural context and audience familiarity. My goal is to use the most widely recognized terms while respecting regional nuances, but striking this balance isn’t always easy.
@@rustyshadesrestoration Thanks for your responce Here In Canada I'm not sure what the correct term would be for your stove. Some would call it a barrel stove Because it's shaped like barrel. My stove is a cast iron Canadian made stove, made in the early 1900's by the Curnery foundry in Toronto Canada. It is a working stove that is in excellent condition. It's story is it was first used to heat the office of an Alberta grain elevator. From there it went into a pig barn for many years. My dad bought it in 1965 to heat his weld shop then later his house. I've had it for the last 35 years. I have since made a copy of my stove out of 2 propane tanks which is more closely sized to your stove. Your video was still well presented and your work is of high quality. Thanks again for your responce
@@markseehawer3762 In fairness, the title is not misleading. He asked the question “Is this a pot belly stove?” He didn’t state it was.
@@rapido2963 This was a week ago why respond now....????
This is a stove from my country. From Poland. Produced in the city of Przysucha. Nice renovation. Regards!
Przysucha must have a rich history of craftsmanship. I’m glad you liked the renovation. Best regards!
Печь новая, в ней ни разу не горел огонь!
Podejrzewam że @rustyshadesrestoration pochodzi z Polski😀 a Przysucha ma rzeczywiście bogatą historie przemysłową. To miasto z moich okolic gdzie mieszkałem w czasach młodzieńczych.
I appreciate the extra details of how and why the cracks develop.
They put a large pot of cold water on it while it was blazing hot; crack
That’s a great job mate and now it works perfect, nice old restored kettle next for the perfect coffee

That turned out very nice! Beautiful work. I love old wood-fired stoves. This one, in particular, is very nice as it is so compact. I would love to have this in my small secondary cabin.

I like it. Very nice refurbishing effort and equally so with the making of the third foot. Now it can be used again for many, many decades to come... Thumbs Up!
Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed the refurbishment and appreciated the effort that went into making the third foot. Thumbs up to your kind words! Wishing you a very happy Christmas! 🎄😊
Wonderful restoration job you did on the wood burning stove. It looks much better than before. I bet it puts out a lot of heat, too. Excellent work.
By the way, I am sure that the cast iron pieces that were broken off were hard to weld back on securely.
Thank you for the visit. Yes, took me some time to weld them back properly, but I managed 🙂
Beautiful job!
Thank you so much 😀
Kudos for even attempting to cast the third leg. This is a cute little stove, and it would be perfect for an off grid cabin.
Thank you so much! Casting that third leg was definitely a challenge, but hearing feedback like this makes it all worth it. An off-grid cabin is a perfect idea for it!
Fantastic job!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️

Nice restoration
Thanks!
Nice result and partly difficult job. Well done ! Congrats 😊
Indeed. It wasn't a very easy restore, but I enjoyed it a lot. I like challenges, generally. Thank you for watching!
Nice restoration! You got lucky when you dried off the stove with a torch - lucky that it didn't warp or stress crack. Also, the lower grate is NOT for building a fire, but for the ash pan (Which is missing). Fire is normally made in the upper chamber.
Hi! Thanks so much for watching and for the valuable input.
The stove was already at room temperature when I dried it with the torch, so there wasn’t any sudden temperature shock that could cause cracking. Regarding the lower chamber, you’re absolutely right-it’s designed for the ash pan. However, when a stove has been freshly cleaned and painted, it’s a good practice to build a small fire in both chambers to heat it up uniformly and help cure the paint.
I really appreciate your care and advice-comments like this are helpful for everyone watching and learning from the process. Cheers!
Brilliant, as usual. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, will do! 😀

Cool I didn’t know that cast iron could be welded and wondered how you were going to fix.
Thanks for your comment! Yes, cast iron can be welded, but it requires specific techniques and materials, like specialized rods and careful preheating, to avoid cracks. I’m glad you found it interesting-fixing it was definitely a rewarding challenge!
The fake dry-brush weathering makes it look like a Comic Con foam cosplay of a cast iron stove, lol, but nice repair work none the less.
I have to say, it’s a bit of a silly take-sorry! But hey, I’m glad you liked the repairs at least!
Vous l’avez non seulement restauré mais amélioré les finitions.
Merci beaucoup ! Oui, j’ai essayé non seulement de restaurer, mais aussi d’améliorer les finitions pour lui donner une nouvelle vie. 😊
You did your best i suppose
Thank you! I always put in my best effort, and I’m glad you took the time to watch. 😊
Having watched the video again I realized that the lower door is for ash, where you are meant to collect ash from. You are not meant to burn wood there.
Coucou de la France 🇫🇷
