I had around 8 subscribers at the time of this video, and if I'd known it would one day get a million views I never would have made this. Therefore, my arguments aren't the most thought out and the audio sounds like it was recorded in a bin. Keep that in mind while you watch it! Also since making this, I've come to appreciate the original comics way more, so it's completely unfair to say its characters are one-dimensional. I think I was referring to Stan's style of dialogue, but just because it's dated doesn't mean it's bad. Stan's original run remains one of the best in comic history, and his characters were very complex. I still agree with most of what I said in this video but I wouldn't do it at the expense of the old comics.
@@ThanosDestroyeryearsago You're right, it shouldn't have been. If the big brains just let the story play out, the Clone Saga wouldn't be regarded as one of the worst Spider-Man stories today.
11:54 one of the best characterizations of Jameson was in the first Spider-Man movie where the Green Goblin wanted him to give up Peter (the guy who sends the Spider-Man photos) and he denied knowing him, saying “he just sends it in by mail” Staring down a super-soldier that could rip him to pieces and he didn’t back down.
Something similar happened in Spectacular Spiderman when the Rhino asked where Peter Parker was and JJJ replies that he knows no Peter Parker, even though Peter and him were facing each other.
It kinda irritates me when people just Portay J Jonah Jameson as "Literally Alex Jones" rather than acknowledging his nuances as a character and that he can be a pretty good journalist in matters that DONT involve Spider-Man I mean If you want a soulless hack fraud who rags on superheroes solely to further their own career, Sally Floyd is right there.
I actually found out about Ultimate Spider-Man from the video game that came out and I was hooked. Mark Bagley's art and Bendis' writing put together is pure beauty. One thing I will always love about Ultimate Spider-Man is how human and emotional everything feels
Same, it was the best game from my childhood, I've played every spidey game on the PS2 as a kid but the Ultimate version always felt like the most badass Spider-Man of them all to me, I guess this video explains well why that is
I personally despise most of the ultimate universe because it mostly that i didnt want it to go or went too far in my opinion. But you have definitely convinced me that the way spider man's story was told is what we need. A more character based, personal story. Definitely changed my view on this slice of the universe. Well done man!
I loved Ultimate Spider-man, so I tried reading some of the other Ultimate comics and was horrified by what I saw lmao. Hulk being an insane r*pist, Xavier falling in love with a sixteen year old, the Blob being a cannibal, it's all edgelord trash. It pains me to know that Ultimate Spider-man is the only part of that universe that was actually good and worth reading. If all of them were that good, the OG Marvel 616 universe would be obsolete.
I wholeheartedly agree with everyone who recommends this run as an introduction into the Spider-Man comics. Sure, you get some weird details that are exclusive quirks of the ultimate universe, but it all works to create a cohesive narrative that works from start to (almost) finish. I read it years ago and it didn’t really do it for me at first, but after stumbling upon Prodigy’s motion comic series of it and getting to experience it at a better pace, I’ve gained a new appreciation for it.
i will forever be mad about the way Peter's relationship with Kitty Pryde ended... i really liked them together- they definitely deserved more and maybe someday we could see them get together again!
I feel out of the live action Spider-Man actors, the closest to this version of the character is Andrew Garfield. People want to think Peter Parker is upbeat and positive 90% of the time, but he's got a lot on his plate and always had a bit of angst in his character. Ultimate Spider-Man, to me, emphasis this to show how difficult being a teenage superhero really would be and I love that. Yeah, he's hit heated at times, but wouldn't you be at that age and had to deal with everything he does? Andrew Garfield, to me, feels like he took a lot of inspiration from this run to try be relatable to every kid and teen who's ever felt overwhelmed and like they can't handle it anymore. Despite feeling that way too, he always gets back and and continue on because it's his responsibility
Ultimate Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man are the greatest teenage versions of the character ever made, really shows that Peter Parker can still be a responsible and total badass hero at the age of freaking 16 years old which is really inspiring and awesome.
I totally agree dude but i feel that Spectacular Spider-Man is more inspired by the Lee/Ditko era of Spider-Man comics with a pinch of modernism and character development similar to the Ultimate Spider-Man comics
@@The_Blue_Otaku I feel like it's a perfect blend of both with a little Raimi sprinkled in. Spectacular Eddie Brock was the closest we've ever gotten to Ultimate Eddie Brock on screen. Peter's childhood friend, both of their parents died in same plane crash, and his anger toward Peter stems from Peter trying to destroy the Symbiote. He also has a thing for Gwen in both versions Spectacular Gwen's role in the story is very similar to Ultimate MJ's. (Peter's best friend in high school, with him when he gets bitten by spider, eventual love interest, love triangle with Harry) It includes Kenny "Kong" McFarlane, a character created specifically for Ultimate Spider-Man Spectacular Peter goes to high school with MJ, Harry, and Gwen like in the Ultimate Universe. In the Marvel Universe, he never ment any of them until college. The spider that bit Spectacular Peter was genetically engineered like on Earth-1610 instead of accidentally irradiated like on Earth-616
@@kyleco9149 Now that you say that it makes sense and I guess your right Peter in spectacular is like a amalgamation of how he acted in romita and ditko era of the comics
i don't agree spectacular is way better cause its more about himself and better jokes and fighting and in ultimate they don't show any type of love interest its so dumb i am not sure if your talking about the comic but spectacular is way better than ultimate in the show.
@@rgmfg Bendis retconned that Peter had been alive this whole time. Or rather, he was resurrected not long after his funeral in some abandoned laboratory in Los Angeles, hitchhiking across the country to make it back home. Oh and Green Goblin was also alive this whole time as well, revealing that the OZ formula is some kind of immortality formula that will keep bringing them back to life no matter how many times they are killed. Which also should mean Harry Osborne, Mary Jane, and Gwen Stacy should also be immortal as they too were exposed to OZ, but that never comes up. I think Bendis was gearing up for some kind of storyline involving Peter and his resurrection, that maybe it wasn't the OZ formula that brought him back. But Secret Wars happened, anything with the name Ulimate was cancelled, and Miles was brought over to the Mainstream Marvel universe, while the company refuses to bring back the Ultimate Universe.
You did it man. You convinced me to read the whole Ultimate Spider-Man Run. I picked up a collectors edition of Ultimatum from my local comic book store for like 2 bucks and really got invested in the story, but I never knew where to go from there, so I seriously appreciate this video breakdown man. I know exactly what I need to look for now.
The only thing I didn’t liked about the end of the Original Ultimate universe was miles migration to me I really liked how he tackled a established super mutant world but hey you can’t always you want :) also that Peter revival I kinda for got that happened
@@gyga100 Nah, they rarely interact in the comics and barely talk about each other. Just sometimes one Spider-Man shows up versus the other like Miles showing up in Venom. Although… I don’t know if it’s a plus or minus, Miles’s comic is okay.
What I remember most about ultimate Spider-Man is his final battle with green goblin Osborn has nothing left he goes all in on one final attempt to kill Peter Peter calls on all of his friends does everything he can to protect his aunt and Gwen The art makes it feel like it’s this cataclysmic battle between these two demigods And the rush of emotion you get when in his final moments all Peter feels is relief that those he loves are safe
@@radiokunio3738 Sorry but...what? If we are talking about characters with only one writer during it's entire existence, that's impossible. Some characters have +70 years old, opposite to manga, with one of the longest being One Piece for example. If we are talking about specific stories with only one writer (wich are called runs), there are kind of plenty, even if some of them aren't completely self contained (well, even Ultimate Spider isn't to some extent). Jack Kirby's The Eternals. 2013' Avengers/New Avengers, Fantastic Four, both by Jonathan Hickman Daredevil by Ann Nocenti Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing Captain America and Gotham DPGC, both by Ed Brubaker (with the last one being by Brubaker + Rucka) Green Lantern by Geoff Johns, etc There are lots of runs, it's just a matter of finding a good one. And i know, i know, mangas are still better in these situations, considering most are self contained lol
I love Bagley’s art; when he’s on. The thing with Bagley that drives me crazy is that you get these random issues where it seems like he just mailed it in. Don’t want to make assumptions, it could come down to synergy with inkers & colorists, I don’t know. But he seems to have large peaks & valleys.
Ultimate Spider-Man is my favorite comic ever, but it also has a lot of problems and has one of the most disappointing endings I've ever seen in anything. I don't hate Miles Morales, but it's a real shame he's the only thing people remember about Ultimate Spider-Man.
@@hachi7692 It was unconfirmed wether he came back or if he was another clone or somth else until a few years back. Now that theyve revived the whole of the ultimate universe in the 616 spidermen story, it doesnt even matter anymore. Fuck editorial man.
Had lots of love-hate relationship with the Ultimate universe, but the only exception was the Ultimate Spider-Man run. Got a more believable Peter as a kid, love Mary Jane and Gwen’s style to being my headcanon clothing for them, Peter and Kitty’s relationship was actually so adorable, it always stand out for me, Jessica Drew being a clone of Spider-Man, Debatably my favorite Aunt May (going back and forth with the PS Aunt May), Spider-Man literally taking a bullet for Captain America, Jameson witnessing and admitting Spider-Man is a hero, and the aftermath of Peter’s death. And then when I thought It was good enough for me to put down the Ultimate Spider-Man run, I read Miles Morales’ run as the next Spider-Man at a Barnes and Nobles and I immediately love his character, his lore, that crossover when he met 616 Spider-Man for the first time and ended up my definitive favorite Ultimate character. I still regret it took years for me to know the character rather than hearing controversy. Head scratching Ultimate Peter came back, but with Miles going to the main marvel universe and main marvel universe Miles went to the Ultimate universe, I think it balanced it out.
I was always a big Peter kitty guy. And seeing her imagining themselves married and being a superhero team in issue 200 was really cute. I too like to believe ultimate ends there.
great input. i agree. the thing with spiderman is the way he relates to all of us. we all know that spiderman was created 1962 and how diffrent our world was at the time. to see parker grow up with us, progressing and evolving as a human is fascinating. you made a really great point about him being truly himself , its beautiful. decades of him becoming the human he is today. Thank you i will subscribe
I'd love to see the MCU start a ultimates sort of side universe. A way to keep the fan favorites and ideas they have now pushing forward. Paired with a way to restart things with a new avengers and spiderman. Although it's probably too soon for that
Finally, after all these years, I've found a comprehensive video essay that explains why this comic is so fuckin good. I been collecting the trade paperbacks since 2014, when I was in high school myself. I just got to Death of Spider-man last year and am now working on getting the Miles Morales books.
My first read was when spiderman dies too. Shit had me in tears, I was like 11 or 12. Was genuinely convinced spiderman was gone forever. Man that comic was good, one of the best character deaths imo
damn youtube took a whole ass year to realize how good this video and show it to everyone. Ultimate spiderman was my childhood and at the time i didn't realize how grounded it really was, the crown jewel of spiderman comics.
Also now that i think about it his death is ironic, he didn't need to save Cap (because punisher was aiming at his kneecaps and cap has a healing factor in the ultimate universe). Cap told him to stay out of the business of the ultimates, he didn't listen and he got himself killed. Kinda sucks that was his ending (although not really).
@@manrix6 He was never stated to be dead during Ultimatum, his status was MIA. (Even in the comic, there was a list of the deceased heroes). And i mean if the green goblin goblin survived being shot in head like it was stated at 14:00, then so could Spidey after "dying" from blood lost (Given that they both recieve their powers thanks to the OZ formula).
While I'm not a fan of Bendis work in recent years (cough cough, superman, cough), I will always give him a chance after reading Ultimate Spider-man and Powers. These were so great, and I'm always waiting for Bendis to pull out another hit like these. When he miss, he miss, but when he strikes? He strikes gold.
It is also... Yes. The high school setting, his relationship with Stark, the smaller stories, and a Spider-Man who is young, modern and prone to mistakes? Sounds like Ultimate Spider-Man.
@@TheSHIELDCap yh but still all the live action films are based on the 616 og spiderman and tom's had a relationship with stark but because it's the mcu and tom's peter is gonna take a GED test then prob will go to college(empire state university) so not really based on the ultimate spiderman cause that peter died young and there is no norman osborn in the mcu
@@ezzekieldirks8542 correction: there is no Oscorp in the mcu, Osborn could still exist and CREATE Oscorp in a near future - it's a open possibility (which I don't think they'll do, since Tom's Peter already met a Norman Osborn, but still possible)
Amazing video, Alex! I completely agree with everything you said, especially the part where they should adapt the comic into an animated series. I mean... someone could argue they already did with the cartoon "Ultimate Spider-Man", but everyone should know, that was nothing like the real Ultimate Spider-Man. The closest we've gotten to an adaption of the Ultimate comics Spider-Man was the amazing videogame that was released back on PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, PC, GBA and DS. That game still remains my favourite Spider-Man game. Even though I believe it's not the best Spider-Man game. That'd go to Web of Shadows, It's still my favourite.
@Erik Kemeey spectacular spider man felt more like the og Spidey but I do get where you're coming from. But I don't think there is a direct adaptation yet tho which is sad for a series as beautiful as USM.
Really love Ultimate Spidey, bought the first issue when it came out and eventually got all of them....it was fresh take on the mythos in a Marvel Universe outside the 616...Being a fan since the 80s...I was hyped for the new take since I had stopped reading the 616 after the clone debacle. Bendis did great on his writing...and having my fave post Todd/Erik artist drawing it (Bagley) was a no brainer. Even their take on the clone saga was better. I honestly was pissed when USM died.....he has barely scratch the surface and felt MM was just a big token...I'm a fan of ORIGINAL characters, not all heroes should be a legacy character, unless it works for their story (Phantom, Black Panther) MM did grow on me....and I enjoyed his Ultimate era better. The movie ITSV was phenomenal. Shoutouts to Donald Glover.
I had a lot of fun reading this series on Comixology during my Christmas break last winter. This series proves we need more serialized stories in comics.
I just finished watching this video and I subscribed. Fantastic stuff man! Also, it really does hit different rereading the comics when MJ warned Peter about dying in earlier issues.
The "clone saga" for ultimate spiderman was actually interesting, it shows the repercussions of what people can create with his blood, plus, its better then 1993s clone saga, boy that was a mess. Also, this universes carnage was way more menacing, when it literally picked up gwen and morphed its face into peters, it was horrifying to look at.
Ultimate Spider-Man was the most I've ever bonded with Peter and the rest of the Spidey cast. Early parts of the series are so dated in the late 90s/early 00s but it still manages to be so charming. I fell so in love with his series that I just couldn't bring myself to read Miles' adventures because this interpretation of Peter was so good. Also say what you will about Bendis but he made a legitimately good Spider-man clone saga, that's a feat worth praise.
I usually like to passively listen to people talking about comics but I think this is one of the first times I've actively wanted to go out of my way read them
After watching this video sometime last year, I decided to give the comics a chance. Oh boy I’m glad I did. Ultimate Spider-Man is one of the best comics I’ve ever read (for the most part) and I’m just now on the 2009-2012 run, and i would like to take the time to look back here to just say thanks for recommending such a great comic. Perfect mix of peter’s life and the hectic spider man stuff.
Ultimate spider-man #25-29 is my first book I bought in an all english bookstore (invited by a friend who watch free comics online and harry potter novels) I am Chinese Malaysian (South-east asia) and ever since I started reading written-english from comics and in months novels Literally the reason I like english and that's how it started (before that I did learn english for over 10 years basic education though )
This is the first time I have seen any one of your videos, and I am SOOOO glad that you did this take on Ultimate Spider-Man! Awesome video! Great commentary! Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley's Ultimate Spider-Man (as well as most of the Ultimate Universe) is my favorite version of Spider-Man. The writing, the pacing, the characters, the artwork: everything works! Everything was damn perfect. Once Miles Morales was introduced, things went even better from there. I had a great time listening and watching and you're right; some of Bendis' stories brought tears to my eyes too. Wasn't a big fan of the switch to the main Marvel Universe, but that's comics for you. Thank you for showing Ultimate Spider-Man and its stories (as well as Bendis and company) much needed support. Keep doing what you're doing. Happy New Year 2022 to you.
This was my first Spider-Man comic and I'm glad I started with it a few years ago. Love the characters, the jokes, the art, the arcs, etc. It was disappointing how Peter's sacrifice was a waste since he comveniently got revived not long after, but I definitely need to reread this. Love this version of Jameson, too. It also made Mark Bagley my favourite Spider-Man artist.
You know, it actually makes a lot of sense that Peter came back. Norman had already been established to come back again and again after he should be extremely dead ( he came back from a headshot after all). As a plot twist, the revival works, the Goblin's repeated revival makes a lot more sense when it's explained that Oz formula gives semi-immortality (apparently it is exhaustible, as norman was implied to be perma-dead after his fight with the spiders)
Something sad I found out about the death of Ultimate Spider-Man is Punisher’s reaction to what he did. He wanted the SHIELD agents to kill him because he killed a kid. That adds more punch to what happened than some shitass, self justifying excuse.
Ultimate Spiderman was my first comic run I ever read, still my favorite. The point of Spiderman was relatability aka Peter Parker and Bendis really showed that in a more modern light. Even though I read it 16 years later after it came out, it was still relevant and graspable, that's art. I fuck with your videos, make more also genocide wooooo.
I remember when they gave out the firs few issues of Ultimate I think it was either at Sears or JCPenny when I was a kid, I got hooked to this series instantly, and it's been one of the few comic series I've actually completed.
While I do agree that ultimate is alot more realistic, I think it does alot of stuff that are weird and good or weird and bad. For example, having Peter be more prone to anger is realistic but its weird for the character. And alot of things happen in very distasteful ways like gwen and Peter viewing each other as siblings yet they dated each other, Eddie having a personal connection with Peter works on paper, but not in execution, and I think they destroyed black cats character. The one good character change i personally enjoy is doc ock as its alot better than 616. But even with all of this, I still love ultimate. Maybe its just because of my bias with the game lol
At times it kinda introduced ideas which were picked up later in a better way. Like for example Eddie Brock being a childhood friend of Peter worked much better in spectacular Spiderman and Miles genuinly became more fleshed out with Into the Spiderverse.
@@danielhart7435 Never as bad as Ultimate's though he always felt like he was just being an ass 616 at least seemed like he was a jerk trying to do the right thing
I started reading the ultimate miles Morales vol.1 as my first ever comic book with spider man relatedness and it still impacts me today and I will forever be grateful to those like you who are at least willing to acknowledge the effort put in, nevertheless agree with it!
I remember reading issue 160 with my childhood friend ricky, we were both huge Spiderman fans but only Ricky read the ultimate series I just watched the movies so he showed it to me. This issue destroyed me, to me as a child seeing Spider-Man die was literally impossible yet here it is. Now I'm thinking about reading the series myself.
I cried many times while reading these because they were given to me by a friend who passed away. Later that year on thanksgiving, we were all talking about what our friend would be like if she were still here. We all burst into tears of joy and saddness and when I went home I restarted reading these books
Personally I like spiderman when he's not attached to anything bigger than "your friendly neighborhood spiderman" My favorite series of spiderman was the spectacular spiderman animated series. There was no other heros, no shield agency, no human extinction level threat. It was a simple story of a high school kid with super powers. Fighting crime at night and dealing with teen drama during the day. I never enjoyed when the comics or other TV series kept making his secret identity revealed to his friends or family or even the world. There's just something about his ability to keep his secret identity a secret that gives the story a lot more spice and thrill. Don't get me wrong. I love ultimate spiderman and the huge battles he faces with the other marvel heros. But I always felt like the spectacular spiderman was more relatable in the sense he seemed so much like a normal kid which in turn made the show better since he also had to carry the responsibility of being a hero.
i think both can work well. the mcu spiderman movies should have taken more elements from ultimate spider-man cause it handled peter story in a superhero universe well
obsessed with the way that your making your videos and how you present your self (aka new favourite internet man just dropped), so i thought i might as well go chronologically, honestly the quality is better than expected mate
It's the darkest and bloodiest Spiderman series to date. There's literally a issue where Spiderman gets shot by Police Officers for being an illegally vigilante
Ultimate Spider-Man is hands down one of the best and my absolute favorite iteration of not only the character, but the Spider-Man story itself. This comic line was the only good thing to come from the Ultimate universe and practically carried that line. Also I dream of NOTHING more than a comic accurate animated adaptation of the series.
Not gonna lie i kinda liked Ultimate Peter coming back. I liked that character way too much to really care that his return wasn't handled the best honestly 🤷
Ultimate Spider-Man were some of the first Marvel comics I ever read after watching the first Raimi movie back in the stone age. They (alongside the the original Lee/Ditko and JMS runs) are what define Spider-man to me. Thank you so much for shining a light on these stories. At times, it feels like contemporary nerd/pop culture has forgotten comics in favor of the MCU, but the kind of intimate, slow-burn, emotional storytelling you’re talking about here is mostly missing from the movie format, so I hope your videos can get more people to dive back into the comics.
You the loss of Ultimate Spider-Man really did hurt me when I read it. I’ve never been as attached to a version of Spider-Mans surrounding world as much as I was in this story. It’s probably easily my favorite Spider-Man world just because it feels the most real to me. So many good characters. So much was lost though with the death of Peter… We no longer had a constant window into that world. It was replaced by Miles… I think that’s why I’ve always had a kinda dislike for miles morales. He meant the end to one of my favorite incarnations of the character. That’s why honestly after Peters death I couldn’t put myself through Miles books.. I just couldn’t. It hurt.. so instead I went through them to try to see if Peter ever came back but even when he did nothing much came from it. Sure the reason he’s alive is stupid but I didn’t care much I just wanted that world back. It honestly saddens me that I will never get it back. Miles Morales has become a great character but I hate the original version because he meant the loss of one of my favorite versions of Spider-Man.
I also generally feel like the original version of Miles Morales kind of has a few issues, mostly that there isn't enough to seperate him from Peter Parker and that he seems to be kinda...to mild. Into the Spiderverse made some genius changes to Miles Morales which I hope will slowly creep into comics, which made him much more of a person of his own. Like, him being really into arts, which differenciates him greatly as a person from Peter. The Uncle Aaron changes are just objectively better. Like, in the original comic, Aaron was just such a mean psychopath and there wasn't really anything for Miles character to gain, outside of being abused and traumatized. Aaron deeply caring about Miles and being killed because of it on the other hand offers a great uncle Ben-esque moment, while the context is really different. Though I think the best change made to Miles is, to give him a whole different origin theme, instead of learning that with great power comes great responsibility, which Miles just doesn't needs to learn because he is already a kid living in a world where Spider-Man is a role model that inspires, its him learning to do that leap of faith. The leap of faith was fully unique to Miles and a great arc to jumpstart him into being his own Spiderman. I think one big problem Bendis has with specifically writing super heroes is really him holding back and being too focussed to make the character a role model and inspirational, which contradicts with his core strength of writing messy and realistic characters. I believe he wants to sincerely wants to write characters like Miles and Riri and creat more black legacy character, him having a black daughter, and that he has the best intentions, I just feel like he falls into the trap of being too sensitive about his black leads.
@@rajyavardhansingh4491 Definitely! Those are the only two locations I’ve actually liked the character. Plus in the PS4 game they didn’t kill Peter for it. Which I don’t understand why’s one say you need to
@@shizachan8421 You make really great points! His uncle in the comics is so uninteresting and just stupid how evil he is. The additions in recent times to his character have definitely enhanced him as a character immensely. Although I still have a bit of a caution when it comes to his character. He’ll just never replace Peter to me which makes me hate when people think Peter needs to die to add him. I can definitely warm up to the character though when he’s his own character separate from Peter. I may prefer him to have his own name but whatever. As long as Peter stays around as well 😂
Aunt May in the ultimate universe is my absolute favorite her and peter's relationship feels so real and is truly heartbreaking at points. As neither one of them wanted to handle that great responsibility each of them had by themselves. They later become much closer but it is so good seeing how may reacts to events in a very human way and her undying love for peter.
The Death of Spider-Man, led to an amazing character arc for Ultimate Cap, whom I didn't even like initially. Probably one of my favorite Cap stories, "United We Stand", which ultimately led to Cap becoming the President of USA.🙌🏿🙌🏿
The Ultimates had cool arcs but the characters themselves with probably except Nick Fury and Thor are written like satires of the Avengers. They feel like The Boys in PG13. Cap is super conservative, Tony is always drunk, Hulk eats people and is super horny, Pym and Janet have a toxic relationship.
@@cmdrjanjalani To be fair Pym and Janet also had a toxic relationship in the 616 universe. However Ultimate Pym came off as a whiny asshole then fallen hero.
I loved this series! I read every issue, and it was great from start to finish. The only jarring moment was the art changing somewhere throughout, and then changing back lol. If you haven't read it, take the plunge and do so, it's honestly great!
I got lucky with this series - I grew up getting into Spider-Man through the animated series in the '90s so I was already a fan but then I worked in a news agent in 2003 and picked up a copy off the shelf. Then I became obsessed and loved the series - the PS2 game is one of my favourites too. Unfortunately when Peter died, I was gutted and put the series down - I only learnt about Miles later. I wish I hadn't stopped reading but oh well.
I read this comic book as a child. Once I was HS I read some issues from time to time where I could find it . In my last year of HS and freshman year of college I decided to finish it. Ultimate spiderman might the best spiderman comic series to date.
Re-reading all the USM comics right now and totally agree on every point! Kinda sucks it didn't end when it should have, but still one of the best runs of all time!
I really loved this run. The Carnage Arc is where I started and did not miss an issue until Miles came around. And even then, I should not have stopped because Miles is such a great character
I'd love for us to make a petition/fundraiser to have a fan-made adaptation of the entirety of Ultimate Universe as a 3D show, with the cel shading similar to USM game.
I've read the first few issues of Ultimate Spider-Man and I really liked it and it's clear to see how it's impacted the movies and other versions of Spider-Man.
The ultimate universe was the one I grew up with, for better or worse XD Here in Brasil, to publish comic books issues individually, just like in the US, is simply inviable, so ever since american comics started being published here it's in this model we call mix, which is pulling a bunch of related (though, sometimes not) comics into only one issue per month and there you have it, which started to change very recently, but I'm not getting into it. That said, all the ultimate titles were published in only one book, so you could have a taste of it all at once and it was perfect for a poor kid like me. I have almost all of the issues from 01 to a bit over 100 and the first relaunch, but unfortunately some late issues wouldn't arrive in my city for months, I started going to college and wouldn't pass by newsstands (which started to die off only recently, too) on regular as I used to, so I ended up quitting buying them and not getting the whole Peter death/Miles' introduction when it came out. To this day, I love this series whole heartedly and it's great to see it getting the love it deserves and not being just _the alternate Spider-Man that doesn't really count_ That was a great vid, I'm subscribing to your channel right now!

I don't know a huge amount about comics but the way the panels are laid out when talking about Bendis' style reminds me of Kirkman on The Walking Dead, how there's a lot of panels of people just reacting to things or feeling emotions, and the dialogue is really natural.
Or like it’s original game, but updated and completed. And (long shot), but I wanna see the 1610 Spidey suit in the 2023 game, but with the model style like with the Spider-Clan suit, or Miles’ Animated suit which was a homage to his first on-screen debut back on the Ultimate Spider-Man show (6/10; liked the series, but doesn’t quite give it that “Ultimate” feel. Still better than 2017’s, tho.)
@@Archive_7802 I agree the ultimate universe wasn't great but man ultimate Spider-Man was really the highlight he's actually my favorite version of Peter
Alright watched this video two days ago and this finally made me inspired to finally start the series after putting it off for forever. Binged it in 2 days to issue 160 and I guarantee it was a masterpiece.
You'll love Spectacular Spiderman In the show, Jameson starts off just printing whatever spiderman pictures Peter gives him, but after his son's dangerous life threatening space landing back home, he notices nobody cared about it, he saw his son an astronaut as a real hero but the media nowadays only painted spiderman as a hero, so Jameson made it his mission to taint the spidey's reputation by making fake and misleading stories painting Spidey as a menace Flash also gets a character arc that turns him good and during the symbiote arc, Flash is the only one Peter listens to, because he's Flash, the last guy you'd expect to get help from The cartoon had a knack of including villains way before they became villains and it's a shame it got canceled, the show had planned for 5 seasons with multiple mini movies, but only ended up getting 2 seasons with the third being hinted to include scorbion, Carnage, and probably Gwens death
@@nqk_0662 here's hoping they cancel the current spiderman cartoon and try again I don't want a Spectacular Spiderman revival But rather another cartoon on par with it
@@thedudecalledalan9095 yes please! I DONT WANT EVERY SINGEL MARVEL CHARACTER IN IT ; I liked it when I saw the xmen and iron man in like once or twice in the old show but I don’t want spidy to be like a background
This is the video I watched when I was recently wondering "Where should I start reading Spider-Man? Is it worth it?" and I've gotta say, even with this video spoiling a lot (not nearly all) of the major events it's still a great read. I only read up through 160 for now, and likely will read through to issue 200, but I'm honestly not too sure after that very last panel you showed. I don't even remember that from my first view of this video, but with the gripes I have with 160s ending already, I think seeing that sort of rubs salt in the wound. Overall I really like the 160 issues I read though, it was more than worth the time, and while I wish some things were tighter in the final few years or that Peter's demise made a little more sense I kind of accept it because by the time you get there you realize that that's just how Bendis writes. Love it or hate it, he's willing to turn his story completely on its head and take a major risk even with main characters that have a lot of development behind them. Sometimes I think it gets a little too crazy, or too shocking, for its own good but overall I'd say the risks make reading more exciting even after watching something like this that laid a lot of it out before I'd even touched the series.
At the time Ultimatum happened I wasn’t used to reading bad comics. I, like, didn’t understand why it was weird until later when someone just said that shit sucked 😂. I was like, “Yeah, I guess it does.”
I recently finished this series after many years of reading it and this video is right on the money as to how I feel about it. I really love ultimate Spider-Man's teen-drama esque escalations of situations or developments in dialogue and characters. This series felt so real to me as well. Keep doing what you love doing Alex.
There is always an artist that gives the definitive version of a character, kinda what Garth Ennis did with Punisher, outside the job Stan Lee and Steve Ditko did, Brian Michael Bendis gave us the definitive Spider-Man.
Ultimate Spiderman (both the comics & show) got me into the comics. I don't read comics for the superhero, action side I come for the characters and the fun adventures they get up to. It's what's missing from the MCU, more relaxing times or even slice of life scenes where two characters just gang out and talk. That's what I love about Ultimate Spiderman
Ultimate Spider-Man just has so many of my all time favorite things in comics. Ultimate Kitty Pryde is probably one of the best comic book heroes ever made, and her relationship with Peter is the best relationship he's ever had in any universe, in my opinion. Her fantasy panel at his funeral where they were married is one of my favorite panels ever, plus she just straight up punches Galactus in the face. It was really cool seeing mutants step out of the shadow of the X-Men and doing their own thing. Obviously there were a lot of issues, but they mostly stemmed from the Ultimate universe as a whole. The soft reset after Ultimatum where it starts with him dating Gwen for some reason, bringing him back from the grave where he pulls a Metro Man and just retires despite the whole "With great power comes great responsibility" thing (even though he does eventually come back, but still), and some others. But even with the flaws, I really wish they hadn't ended the Ultimate universe. I feel like with the Spider-Verse movie basically starting up at the Miles portion of the Ultimate Spider-Man story, we probably won't get a full Ultimate Spider-Man or Ultimate Universe series, but I'll still wish for one. ALSO IF ANYONE WANTS TO READ ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN OR ANY OF THE ULTIMATE UNIVERSE, I highly recommend Marvel Unlimited. Basically Netflix but for Marvel comics. It has every Marvel comic, available to be read digitally, for just like $10 a month. You can do one month, binge everything, and then cancel it, and it will be the best $10 you ever spent (or keep it going and just read every Marvel comic). Definitely an easy and cheap way to enjoy the series while still supporting the creators, and honestly way easier and convenient than just pirating the comics individually. 12/10, highly recommend Marvel Unlimited, download the app on your mobile device today or check out the website.
This is my favorite comic series of all time. You hit the nail right on the head with so many of the things that made it fantastic! I'll favor have this series has one of my biggest inspirations in my writing
If any love action Peter is like the ultimate comics, it's definitely Andrew Garfield. I think that's intentional too as the movie pulls quite a few things from the ultimate comics
So did the Tobey Maguire movies, tbh. The tone is more golden age, but some aspects of the story and some aesthetic choices were based on the early Ultimate comics. -the spider being genetically altered instead of radioactive -the spider coming from Oscorp -Green Goblin being Spidey's first super villain -Harry being Pete's only friend in high school despite being kind of a rich kid douchebag -the goblin being an Oscorp human enhancement experiment gone wrong due to Norman's own ego -Peter making a horribly lame wrestling outfit -Mary Jane getting thrown off the bridge, and being saved (instead of the old comics, it was Gwen on the bridge and she died) -Doc Ock horrifically murdering people with his tentacles -Harry being manipulated by his allegedly dead father into trying to kill Spider-man Honestly every single Spider-man adaptation since the 2000's has taken some inspiration from the Ultimate comics. Tom Holland's adaptation takes more from the 2009-2011 era of Ultimate Spider-man, combining the Ultimates' mentorship with Miles Morales's smart kid school and best friend (Ganke/Ned).
I seriously started reading this comic bc the title sounded cool. I read the first 40 issues in a day and I was hooked. And i just kept going and going and eventually I read ultimatum, and I just fell in love with not only spiderman but the entire universe that he’s in, I love jonny storm’s character, I loved bobby’s character. After the death of spiderman, I instantly went on to fallout and then miles’ story. And then i fell in love with miles even more than i did before. I read everything to secret wars (which btw i don’t recommend reading secret wars it’s VERY confusing) basically what i’m trying to say. I LOVE this series. Everything about it is great and i truly wish it just kept going. Currently i’m reading the Ultimate X-men because that’s how much i fell in love with the universe. Great video btw you’re a VERY underrated channel!
I love pretty much everything about Ultimate Spider-Man except for a few character designs. I also wish Peter didn't fucking die but without Miles we wouldn't get Into the Spider-Verse (my favourite piece of fiction ever) so it's fine.
You've only been making videos for two years and they're amazing you really should have more subs when I'm older and have a job I want to do videos with this kinda passion and research

Despite feeling that way too, he always gets back and and continue on because it's his responsibility
andrew's also a very good actor and the most realistic of the live action ones IMO

He also has a thing for Gwen in both versions
Spectacular Gwen's role in the story is very similar to Ultimate MJ's. (Peter's best friend in high school, with him when he gets bitten by spider, eventual love interest, love triangle with Harry)
It includes Kenny "Kong" McFarlane, a character created specifically for Ultimate Spider-Man
Spectacular Peter goes to high school with MJ, Harry, and Gwen like in the Ultimate Universe. In the Marvel Universe, he never ment any of them until college.

Happy New Year 2022 to you.
thank you very much❤️
@@alexlennen No, THANK YOU for this sensational video. 🙂
I feel like the Aunt May from Into the Spider-verse is the one inspired by Ultimate Spider-man
This was my first Spider-Man comic and I'm glad I started with it a few years ago.
Ultimate Spider-Man Is My Favourite Spider Man Comic Book Series 🧡
Maybe its just because of my bias with the game lol
oh yea that's totally fair thanks for commenting
Peter always had a temper.
At times it kinda introduced ideas which were picked up later in a better way. Like for example Eddie Brock being a childhood friend of Peter worked much better in spectacular Spiderman and Miles genuinly became more fleshed out with Into the Spiderverse.
Og Peter had a temper too thou
Do it all 160 issues then move to miles
First time seeing your videos. Keep up the good work :3
such a good read back in the day
I cried many times while reading these because they were given to me by a friend who passed away. Later that year on thanksgiving, we were all talking about what our friend would be like if she were still here. We all burst into tears of joy and saddness and when I went home I restarted reading these books
Personally I like spiderman when he's not attached to anything bigger than "your friendly neighborhood spiderman"
My favorite series of spiderman was the spectacular spiderman animated series.
But I always felt like the spectacular spiderman was more relatable in the sense he seemed so much like a normal kid which in turn made the show better since he also had to carry the responsibility of being a hero.
i think both can work well. the mcu spiderman movies should have taken more elements from ultimate spider-man cause it handled peter story in a superhero universe well
Agreed. 🥂
Spectacular molded the mainstream universe with Ultimate Marvel and a bit of the Raimi films
This is the same reason i like homecoming so much.
Same for Batman and Punisher.
obsessed with the way that your making your videos and how you present your self (aka new favourite internet man just dropped), so i thought i might as well go chronologically, honestly the quality is better than expected mate

This parallel is what has sold me on wanting to read this comic.
This is the run that actually got me into comics
I haven't read Ultimate Spiderman. But this video makes it look like it has similar writing style to Invincible by Robertt Kirkman.
I liked that character way too much to really care that his return wasn't handled the best honestly 🤷
well, i’m definitely gonna try this out. this is gonna be my first spiderman comic so i’ll come back in a few months and give my verdict😭
i am now on issue #39 and i can definitely say i’m hooked
Every writer should read this to see how you modernize a classic franchise right
Ultimate Spider-Man were some of the first Marvel comics I ever read after watching the first Raimi movie back in the stone age.
Miles is still shiet in the comics, he has been drastically improved in the Spiderverse and the ps4 game though.
This is so nostalgic. I grew up with this series, but I had totally forgotten about it.
I'm somehow love "goofy ah" peter hair cut in this universe, It's make him look so young and curious.
The ultimate universe was the one I grew up with, for better or worse XD
Here in Brasil, to publish comic books issues individually, just like in the US, is simply inviable, so ever since american comics started being published here it's in this model we call mix, which is pulling a bunch of related (though, sometimes not) comics into only one issue per month and there you have it, which started to change very recently, but I'm not getting into it. To this day, I love this series whole heartedly and it's great to see it getting the love it deserves and not being just _the alternate Spider-Man that doesn't really count_
That was a great vid, I'm subscribing to your channel right now!
Aqui na minha cidade as únicas edições que eu conseguia encontrar sempre era do Ultimate, então também cresci com ela.

I don't know a huge amount about comics but the way the panels are laid out when talking about Bendis' style reminds me of Kirkman on The Walking Dead, how there's a lot of panels of people just reacting to things or feeling emotions, and the dialogue is really natural.
Ultimate Spider-Man is the shit we need a video game series just like spiderman PS4 let's not cap
You'll love Spectacular Spiderman
In the show, Jameson starts off just printing whatever spiderman pictures Peter gives him, but after his son's dangerous life threatening space landing back home, he notices nobody cared about it, he saw his son an astronaut as a real hero but the media nowadays only painted spiderman as a hero, so Jameson made it his mission to taint the spidey's reputation by making fake and misleading stories painting Spidey as a menace
Flash also gets a character arc that turns him good and during the symbiote arc, Flash is the only one Peter listens to, because he's Flash, the last guy you'd expect to get help from
The cartoon had a knack of including villains way before they became villains and it's a shame it got canceled, the show had planned for 5 seasons with multiple mini movies, but only ended up getting 2 seasons with the third being hinted to include scorbion, Carnage, and probably Gwens death
I only watched and love two Spider-Man cartoons ….AND I NEED MORE!
@@nqk_0662 here's hoping they cancel the current spiderman cartoon and try again
I don't want a Spectacular Spiderman revival
But rather another cartoon on par with it
@@thedudecalledalan9095 yes please!
This Ultimate storyline felt like a true source to the original Spiderman comics by Stan Lee.
Ayo can't wait for the wall documentary tommorow
-the spider being genetically altered instead of radioactive
-the spider coming from Oscorp
-Green Goblin being Spidey's first super villain
-Harry being Pete's only friend in high school despite being kind of a rich kid douchebag
-the goblin being an Oscorp human enhancement experiment gone wrong due to Norman's own ego
-Peter making a horribly lame wrestling outfit
-Mary Jane getting thrown off the bridge, and being saved (instead of the old comics, it was Gwen on the bridge and she died)
-Doc Ock horrifically murdering people with his tentacles
-Harry being manipulated by his allegedly dead father into trying to kill Spider-man
Honestly every single Spider-man adaptation since the 2000's has taken some inspiration from the Ultimate comics. Tom Holland's adaptation takes more from the 2009-2011 era of Ultimate Spider-man, combining the Ultimates' mentorship with Miles Morales's smart kid school and best friend (Ganke/Ned).
@@GigaDonk99 I think they were talking about Peter's character
Always glad to share small experiences like these with other people… Goddamnit Bendis why he needed to be still alive?!
I honestly always liked the relationship between Jameson and spiderman and how it grow stronger.
