@@CPAPReviews Hi Nicko - you stated in the video that the auto algorithm on the Philips DreamStation Go Auto model is not good. QUESTION-1 : Does this shit auto algorithm also apply to the full sized (DS1) DreamStation 1 CPAP AUTO model ??? QUESTION-2: what about the DS2 - does this also have a shit auto algorithm ? QUESTION-3 : if the Philips auto algorithm is so bad, do you have any ideas on why Philips has not tried to resolve these fundamental issues ???
Hey I just want to say thanks for this channel, Nick. I started CPAP about a month ago (Resmed 11 with pillows) and in two nights dropped my AHI from 22 to
Do you go to chiropractor? I used to have similar problems to what you describe but an adjustment got rid of acid reflux and night time pees. probably still snore though.
Same machine, same results! 86AHI ,down to 1.7- 2.5 AHI . No more snoring at all!!! No more 3- 4 trips to the bathroom. I positively explode out of bed in the morning! Life changing for sure!!!
Fascinating. I’m using my first cpap and it’s resmed AS 11 auto. This video helped me understand how to interpret my data so much more than I was doing. I’m still adjusting pressure and trying to find a mask that’s tight for me, so my data looks erratic. I hope I can get it dialed in like you show. No one is helping me except for you. I’m so thankful for your great content
Thank you Nick, I'm a respiratory therapist and sleep technologist, I setup PAP equipment daily. I totally agree with you. The recalled DreamStation had superior reporting, wave forms etc., that's why I favored the pre-recalled machines, they also had a feature called Opti-start which moved the pressure gradient forward so that reaction to an event would take less time. I witnessed the effectiveness and it was remarkable. Those pt's that have the DreamStation 2, I'm sorry, it's a terrible machine both quality and algorithm efficacy. If you have these machines, instead of having a straight pressure, which might be uncomfortable for some pt's. I suggest shifting the pressure gradient, i.e. 5-15cwp, try 8-15cwp. Hope that helps.
Dreamstation1 after the recall also has Opti-start. But the new replaced machine behaves different and worse than the old one with the toxic foam. I think that they changed the algorithm somehow.
@@dimiterprenerov8683 You would have to look at your software version. I think the last version for the DreamStation 1 was 1.1.8. If its the same then i think the algorithm is probably the same I had to remind some of my patients when they got their replacement units is that the machine has to relearn their breathing. So it typically starts off at the lowest pressure of their prescription and work its way up. Each night after starting a bit closer to the pressure the machine used for most of the night before. Your old machine went through this exercise when you first got it. After a few days of use your new machine will start at the pressures your old unit did 😀
@@busigh Thanks for that comment. The DS1 says it's software version is 1.1.8. I have it since March 2022, so if it didn't learn my breathing so far, I doubt it will do any further. Maybe the old one was with older fw version, but I can't check this as I returned it to DME.
This is probably my favorite video yet. :) Proud to have been a part of it. Awesome information as to what was happening with me while using that piece of garbage Dreamstation Go.
All good mate, i knew who made the comment haha. Glad you enjoyed it mate. Thanks for sharing all that great info with me. If you do want to continue using your Dreamstation Go i'd tighten up that auto range to perhaps 14cm min, 18cm max and a ramp from starting at 10cm for 20-30 min. Cheers legend. Nicko
@@NYEliteAlleycats-NAL Yes I did. You are looking at a LITE version of one manufacturer's machine against a FULL Blown version of another. is the algorithm used in the Resmed mobile version the same as their FULL blown CPAP machines? Is the performance the same? I have a database of over 300 patients using Dreamstation 1 and I've not seen the issues that are shown here. I have no axe to grind I've found both Resmed and Respironics offer excellent units and have meaningful though not perfect algorithms. Would be interesting to know if the algorithm and performance on the Resmed AirMini is the same as the AirSense 10 Autoset. Would also be interesting for patients who use a Dreamstation 1, 2 or GO to upload their data to sleephq and use sleepyhead to see if they are observing what is shown in this video for themselves.
Uncle Nicolo, new name. We are so fortunate to have you and the knowledge of apneas. I am adjusting my resmed 10 to your advise and getting good results. Dr says my pressure should be 10. I am down to 8.2 with 4 apneas per hour . used to be in the 60's when i first started. Youve got to learn to be your own Doctor Thanks Nic
G'day Philbo, (new name ). Just be a bit careful putting all your trust in the all mighty AHI number. Here's a few good vids which explain why 1. ruclips.net/video/pCqyc4aWnuk/видео.html 2. ruclips.net/video/Ebg9-5lNMk4/видео.html Cheers legend. Nicko
Great video, and since I was diagnosed with apnea in June, I binged your channel because you always have the best cpap reviews and advice on RUclips. I finally received my Resmed Autosense 10 and P10 nose pillow mask at my fitting last week, and went from an AHI of 37 to 0.23 in a week. I haven't noticed much of a change in sleep quality, and am still tired a lot, but I have a clearer mind at work and feel more productive. The Resmed reports and myair app are very basic, but I get the details I want quickly and easily, my nightly scores are 99s and 100s. Thank you for all of the info you share with us!
Thank you Nick for the great channel. I've been on CPAP for 14 years. I started with the old Resmed, then bought a Phillips dreamstation in 2013, then it got recalled last July and I bought RESMED AirSense 10 in a panic after the recall (used my old 2008 Resmed while waiting for the new one to arrive). Now Phillips are fulfilling the recall and sending me a new Dreamstation... So, I have my original Resmed (circa 2008) that still works, I have my carcinogenic Dreamstation (circa 2012), my new'ish Resmed 10 and the new replacement dreamstation arriving monday. Unfortunately, the Phillips machines aren't quite heavy enough for a boat anchor! Will stick with my Resmed's. I really value your clear instructions and explanations of the data to help me with adjusting my settings. I just signed up to SleepHQ and have been looking at my data which appears to look pretty good. Going for the O2 ring as well just double check O2 levels. Keep up the great work!!
I am using ResMed AirSense10 and after watching this I’m glad that I am. When I first investigated therapy my test showed 52 events per hour and sleep quality wasn’t that great. Since going onto therapy I have got that down to somewhere between zero and one event per hour which is a vast improvement. My pressure is set to start at four and from what I understand it doesn’t move from that for the whole time so something must be going right. I’m feeling much better to all thanks to this device. Thanks for the great video Nick.
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. After watching this I went straight out and replaced my Phillips Dreamstation with a RESMED Airsense 10. The difference has been incredible. After more than 18 months with the Dreamstation, I was still waking up tired. I assumed this is because my resmed P10 mask was falling off (or I was unconsciously taking it off) during the night. Now with the Airsense 10 I usually wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and its rare now for me to wake up with the mask off. There is absolutely no doubt that that the RESMED Airsense 10 has been infinitely better and its changed my life as I wake up not feeling tired, no headaches etc.. This is life changing for me. Thanks so much Nick, these videos are so important, please keep this channel going.
Thanks for this info. It is really aggravating to have paid $1,000 out of pocket for this machine and have so much go so wrong. One thing I don't get it why these machines don't get updates to improve the algorithm. I'm not specifically singling out Phillips. I mean most of these have SD lots and many have bluetooth, Wifi or cellular. These manufacturers could send over-the-air updates or post files online so we can make use of these things.
G'day Steve, very good comment mate! I've been asking myself the same thing for 5+ years. ResMed has just introduced 'over the air updates' on the AS11 device. Cheers
That is some awesome information. Yet another reason I am thankful to have a ResMed. I am a total advocate for fixed pressure vs APAP. Thanks mate!! Love to all.
Hi Kathy, although i love SleepHQ, unfortunately it's made some of my previous vids redundant and some of my popular ones that i will need to go back do again. I guess that's the thing about 'science' . It's based on the best information available at the time. I made the ASS-umption that the auto algorithms / AHI were accurate. A bad mistake on my part
@@CPAPReviews Uncle Nicko…you are only human and science is ever evolving. I’m loving fixed pressure a great deal. Auto algorithms really don’t work for me but am aware for others it is nirvana.
WOW! Thanks Nick. So glad I'm using Resmed Autosense 10. After my initial four week titration study with 2 weeks on Auto and then 2 weeks on fixed pressure, I preferred the Auto setting, which I've stuck with. Glad I did, because my diagnosed upper pressure requirement was initially 11.2 and stayed around that consistently, but it has steadily increased over the past six months to around 12.6 or 12.7, sometimes up to 13.5 now. When I talk lying down on my back (mask off) the sound is a bit strangled and nasal, and my throat feels like it has closed up a bit. This has worsened over the past year, so I wonder if that explains the need for my Auto pressure to increase too. Does anyone else experience this? The joys of getting older haha!
Hey, thanks for your great comment and membership I certainly think it's worth trying both therapy modes to find which one is most suitable. When it comes to CPAP therapy, it's certainly not a 'one size fits all' approach and you need to work out what therapy settings / mode works best for you and your sleep. Sound to me like you're doing great! Well done
I'm using the ResMed AirCurve 10 BIPAP. This little machine has been life changing for me. I went from 50+ events per hour to consistently under 5 per hour. I need to check out that O2 ring. Sounds interesting.
Thanks Nick for your consistently useful videos! I’m in the States and have been using a ResMed 11 for 7 months. I have good support from my Rx fortunately, but all I learn from your channel has made my transition more effective, smoother and increased my understanding 👍 Keep up the great work !
Had my first, well most recent I should say, sleep test last night. A home test from Deeper Sleep Bathurst. I've tested positive before, about 7 years, and did nothing about it, but now I'm older (49) and restless leg is getting worse, it's time to do something. I found your channel recently for research and I'm glad I did. Your videos are entertaining and informative, and even better, offer an Aussie perspective, unlike most channels. I noticed you had some videos singing the praises of the AirSense 11, about a year old, and the AirSense 10 getting a little old now. I haven't seen it on any local CPAP reseller sites, or even on Resmed's site. What's happened to it? I'd rather get a newer machine than an 'end of life' model, as per one of your videos.
G'day, yep i think that's a good call! Time to get it sorted. I don't believe the AirSense 11 will make it to Australia until 2023. Although the AirSense 10 is an 'older' model, not much has changed and sometimes it's better to get tried and tested models vs new ones. Cheers mate. Nicko
I think what David needs to do is tighten up that range. I get one or two OA's per night with my DS1, but my range is only 10-13. Any lower and I start getting more OA's; any higher and I start getting CA's. 10-13 seems to be the sweet spot for me. Looking at my data on SleepHQ, I see it mostly stays at 10, but often spikes up briefly before going back down (in the space of ~5 mins). So maybe rather than switching to fixed pressure mode with the DS, play with the range until a sweet spot is found. Great video Uncle Nicko, thanks! And I'll get a ResMed just as soon as I bubble up my provider's wait list. Meanwhile I'm using a foamless air chamber (thanks to you), so I'm doing okay for now.
Thank you for doing these comparisons. I'm thinking about replacing my older cpap machine before it stops working, and it helps to know which manufacturers do a better job with apap.
Thanks, I am not surprised but I do know that the Dreamstation 1 algorithm does increase because the Dr set my pressure at 8 to 18 and when the pressure hit 16 my mask would leak like a sieve. I took some advice from our friend Lanky Lefty and narrowed my Auto CPAP 13.5 to 15 and it works great. So a narrow Auto range is another option for some people who are stuck with a Dreamstation. My average is usually around 13.8 with 90% at 14.5
Hi William, yes it will most definitely increase, it just takes a really long time to do so. That's also a great tip with the narrow auto cpap pressure which is pretty similar to changing to fixed pressure cpap mode. Cheers
G'day Kev, cheers legend. I'm going to have to get them to give me the software development kit because that Breas app needs a touch of Nicko haha. I recon they will give it to me also! I'll shoot them an email
@@CPAPReviews Hi Nicko... Yes their ap does need some work and have better reports to send to my CPAP and DME provider for compliance. I can volunteer to help test when ready. Cheers...
So glad I have the newest Resmed Autosense 11 and will never use my Philips Respironics DS 1 ever again, even after the new foam replacement. It's like night and day. My flow rate always looks perfect now and most nights my AHI is less than 1 and sometimes it's zero! It's far superior and your video was most interesting tonight.
Nick, great review mate. This brings to mind that if you get a bad reading (constantly) it MAY have a detrimental effect on someone's capacity to drive, which in turn may prevent them from earning a living as a professional driver or airline pilot or worse traffic controller??? Which really drives home, having the correct machine is paramount!
Amazing video, Nick! I'm a former FoamGate user... was offered the DS2 from Philips, to which I said NO THANKS. Bought a ResMed AirSense 10 Auto set for Her online. I borrowed the money from my partner to purchase it - and am I glad I did! Find a way to switch over to ResMed because my AHI is now under 1.0. I want nothing to do with Philips as a company. I will NEVER buy another product of theirs as long as I live. I used to be in sales and the way Philips handled the recall was unconscionable - plus they've allegedly known about the cancer foam for at least 7 years and didn't bother to come forward. They are EVIL!
Recall that Airsense under reports AHI, sometimes reporting none of them. So, I'd go by how you feel the next morning, not what the machine claims on the readout.
Started cpap 4yrs ago. Resmed airsense 10. Was exhausted all the time. Heavy set, at the time. 42 events. Severe sleep apnea. Acid reflux. Pain. High blood pressure. For years i suffered this and didnt know. Started cpap. Fixed everything instantly. Fish in water. 4yrs on and i refuse to sleep anywhere i cant bring my device. True quality of life upgrade. What i dont get is when i go for annual appointment my docs suprised at my usage. Pleased but suprised. I get the feeling alot of folks resist using their devices. I dont get why they wouldnt use em. With results like mine it just dosent make sense to me. Take care folks.
Thankful to have a Resmed 11 and an 0 ring to monitor oxygen. This is such great information. I am learning so much from your analysis of data. Thanks so much!
I found a huge difference between Respironics and Resmed. I have complex sleep apnea and had an initial AHI of 64. Hospital put me on respironices at first because it was cheaper, but it was not working properly. I am happy to say that after a lot of complaining I have been on the Resmed airsense ASV machine for years now and my apneas are less than 1 most days. So yes, there is a huge difference with Resmed
G'day, thanks for your awesome comment and for sharing your experience. The ResMed ASV is very impressive! I did a video on it not long ago if you would like to check it out - ruclips.net/video/0j6m6ZRf8Kw/видео.html
Got a used ResMed after trying to go without my Dreamstation for a bit. I feel better than I did on the Dreamstation. Now I know why. I have a replacement Dreamstation now. I think I'll keep it, but reset off Auto if I ever have to use it. Thanks for the excellent info!!
Just by way of a tip, I use a Resmed Quttro F/F mask and I often use wipes to clean it, but what I have found out, alcohol or spirit infused wipes, at the very least discolour the silicone in mask and I have a suspicion it lessens the lifetime of the rubber insert.(I have a ramp of eight and a pressure of seventeen)and this means my silicone insert only lasts 12-15 weeks, which is pretty expensive, but like a lot of sleep apnoeiacs I just cant do without my CPAP machine!
I had a Dreamstation One Bi-Pap for about five years before the recall happened. No serious complaints. Pressures of 13.0 and 8.0. Once I got the refurb replacement it wanted to use Auto Bi-Pap mode and kept the intake pressure at 10.0, which felt like I was suffocating. So I found the developer menu by holding the Ramp and Dial button together for about ten seconds, and switched that puppy to normal Bi-Pap mode with fixed pressures of 13.0 and 8.0. My AHI last night was 0.5. No, Dreamstation, you don't know what's best for me.
Nicko! What is the go with buying a Resmed Airsense 11 in Australia? Victoria. What’s the deal with them not having past their certification yet? Where is the best place to get my hands on one??
Auto gets trashed a lot. What also matters is which machine one is using as algorithms and made equally, there is no standard and manufacturers are secretive about it. I like the auto on my resmed but i have also tried fixed pressure for a while to see which one is better for me. I feel like i get a better sleep on Auto then fixed even with the same AHI results. Maybe allowing the pressure to drop when it isn't needed allows the body to get a break from the higher pressure which is constant on fixed.
G'day brother, i think you nailed it with this comment. There are certain scenarios when auto is better than fixed and vice versa. Thanks for your 6 month membership
Fantastic video! This explains a lot about my intial experience with the Dream station one. Long story short my prescription is 17 and in order to use the auto settings I had to set it to 15-20 which works great. It's obvious that Phillips has a crap algorithm and I'll definitely be looking for a Resmed device in a couple months when money comes in. 👍👍
Hey brother, thanks for sharing your experience. Yeah that's the other option you could do, leave it on auto but set a tight range close the prescribed pressure level. Great stuff. ResMed far superior in many ways mate. Cheers
I got a CPAP 2 weeks ago. The first week wasn't fun. I kept waking up because of the mask. The last few nights I've slept way better! Keep wearing it and you will get used to it. I can't wait to see my energy levels in another week or so. I'm starting to feel alive and able to focus again. It's worth the trouble to get used to it all !
@@magnusred2945 Still living it, I actually get good sleep now!!! I dialed in my pressure to go from 9 to 12 and my AHI is about 1.5 per hour. I'm so glad I got a CPAP!!! I must have been waking up dozens of times a night without the machine. I didn't really notice waking up but I was always tired for about 2 years. Now I feel alive again.
@@magnusred2945 Ya absolutely. I actually sleep right again. It took a few weeks to get used to. Plus I kinda pissed off my sleep doctor by messing around with the pressures on my own. Having it set from 5 to 16 is just weird. Too much fluctuations.
Thanks for the info. I'm glad my insurance got me the Resmed Airsense 11. Its been perfect and AHI been a good 2.4 - 4.5 per day average. Im sticking with resmed!
I noticed this myself when I switched to the AutoSense 10 (because I didn't have a year to wait for my replacement DreamStation). And here's the thing--even with the pressure set to a fixed number--and the number was right near the average that the ResMed floats at, 11--I still had fewer events with the ResMed.
Thank you. I received the Phillips machine that replaced the recalled machine & yes I will be changing auto to fixed cpap mode because I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT THEM CONTROLLING MY PRESSURES !!! What are they trying to do?? Give us heart disease, stroke from depriving us of oxygen, or just kill us in our sleep? I already had to replace that thin piece of crap tubing they sent with the larger one I had because I could tell it restricted the airflow. Thanks so much for your expertise!
Hi Ben, if you read the articles in the description (the sleep mag one) you will see the F&P algorithm is very good. We are integrating the sleepstyle with sleephq very soon
This is very educational. I just had an at home sleep study done but I'm not really sure how bad it is. I am going tomorrow to get fitted for a cpap machine. Below I have posted some results if anyone has any information on how bad mine is. Thanks to anyone who knows about this stuff. Recording Time: 432 Minutes Snoring was noted, there was a total of 376 respiratory events. Of the events, the total number of apneas was 71 (55 obstructive, 11 mixed and 5 central) and 305 hypopneas. My respiratory index was 52.2 events per hour of study time. The mean oxygen saturation during the study was 87% with a minimum of 73%. I spent 275.1 minutes at oxygen saturation measuring less than 90% (63.7% of recording time) And 206.8 minutes at oxygen saturation measured at or less than 88%
it’s now april 2023. once i found out about the recall, i stopped using as ordered. miserable exhausting sleep. i HAD TO START USING AGAIN this week, I hated having returned back to a lifetime of 24/7 exhaustion and poor life. Once on CPAP it changed my life for better. Once philips made crap machines with . cancer risk recall, they literally made my life horrible again... i don’t have a replacement two grand to get a similar new unit to avoid the foam issue. i literally am choosing foam illness over and sleep, that’s how bad my sleep life was all my life. NO WORD BACK from registering, that’s beenTOO LONG them not fix or replace. Class action lawsuit nothing to lose.
This is handy info if I ever need to replace my machine. Philips are lucky not to be sued and instructed to recall and refund all their machines. I am happy with my BMC auto cpap.
I'm sorta stunned. My DS560S has delivered AHI's under 3 for pretty much the entire time I've owned it. Runing APAP, 10cm-16cm. I have severe OSA, generally no CA's and a fair bit of VS. The Respironics was the first APAP I've owned and once I found the right bracket for therapy pressures it's been a champ. But all I can say is YMMV.
Good comparison, and also underlines how important it is, if at all possible, to incorporate Oximetry Data. I do not think you get the whole picture without seeing both CPAP and Oximetry Data. The Philips results above are absolutely appalling, and almost suggest the user would be better off without it. However, I agree that switching to Fixed Pressure would be a sensible workaround to overcome the effectively useless Software issue. One question this does raise for me, is the issue of Software/Firmware versions. I have a few ResMed S10 units to play with, and the Firmware is dependant on when made. There is no sign that any were updated after manufacture, despite the fact that most would have had their Modems active during use, so should have been updated as they went. Or at least should in an ideal world, given the fact that the Manufacturer can communicate with the devices if the Modem is active. My wife recently received a new ResMed S10 AirSense AutoSet via the UK NHS, and whilst that was functionally identical to her existing ResMed machine that I had acquired for her lightly pre-used (I fully disassembled it and sterilised it from end to end before use), I noted that the Firmware was different. Her results are also, not surprisingly, very slightly different. Nothing major, as we had everything well monitored and under control but, looking at her Data via OSCAR as I do every day, the later machine does seem to operate slightly better. I also think her results would be even better with a ResMed For Her model, but the UK NHS only supplies the Black S10 units that do not have the female-geared algorithms (faster response to breathing issues, raising the session working pressure higher if needed, and keeping it at the higher level for remainder of that session, and a few other changes that I cannot now recall). I gather the ResMed S11 units now have the female-geared option as standard. The point I am making, is that all apparently identical machines are not necessarily equal, depending on the Software/Firmware. I am totally against the way that ResMed and others protect their Software and Spare Parts business models, because this protectionism makes sensible and performance related updating totally impossible and, likewise, sensible maintenance and repair. Both are almost totally impossible (albeit if you look, you can obtain some limited Parts via the usual channels if you look hard enough). In terms of Parts, most ResMed S10 used Models could have a second life just by clinically cleaning them, and changing the Pneumatic Block (AKA the Air Pump Motor Unit), which is the only moving part. But, that said, it would also be preferable if the Firmware/Software could be updated at the same time. I am not in the slightest bit persuaded that this protectionism is for health reasons, the machines are not that complex, and there are many active users who understand how the machines work, fully exploit the Clinical Menus, and take a lot of time to monitor their Data. There should not be any blocks put in place to deny users the ability to update their machines via identical Hardware spare parts, and via later Software.
Great comment Keith. You raise some great points all of which i agree with. Just so you know the AS10 does not do 'over the air' updates. The AS11 does. Cheers
@@CPAPReviews Thanks for letting me know about the AS11. I knew the AS10 did not update, I was just saying that that should have been possible, but they elected not to add that feature. That was crazy given how they do update the Firmware, so older versions may not be as good as later versions, even on virtually identical Hardware. I do not know about the AS11, but another minor issue on the AS10 is the MotherBoard BIOS Battery is soldered on, it's a standard CR2032 Cell, but of the type that has fixed pins for legs, that have to be soldered on. That may cause issues if that Cell loses Voltage below the working range, and then it cannot easily be replaced unlike, say, on most Computer MotherBoards. I am going to replace one on an older well-used test unit, as I have noted the Voltage on that one is below 3.0 Volts, and it tends to forget Settings if left for a while, which I think is the low Voltage unable to hold them for long enough before next powered up. I'm not sure how the machine will react, it could in theory lose all configuration settings, so it will be interesting to see how it reacts to a complete loss of BIOS back-up Battery power. If it bricks, then on better units I may need to solder on a by-pass supply when changing the Battery, to maintain 3.3 Volts during the swap out.
It must be so frustrating to get a machine that's supposed to help you get refreshing sleep, and struggle to adjust to it, only to succeed in that, but still have all these problems and often without the doctor even caring to investigate the raw data.
So glad I found you, and sub’d!!! I’ve been on ResMed autopap since 2003 and didn’t know anything about anything, as I am finding out watching your channel!! I was told I have severe OSA. After a sleep study 13+ years ago the doctor said I should be on a CPAP at a steady 12 pressure. Previously I was on 5-15 as needed. I asked him why I should go down in pressure if I was experiencing apneas that needed 15 pressure. He said, “ because you sleep better at 12”. I still didn’t understand, but that’s the only reason he could give me. I stayed at the 5-15. Does this make any sense to you? My ResMed 10 has been giving the message “ MOTOR LIFE EXCEEDED “ for 7 months. So I bought, but haven’t received the ResMed Mini and it’s way overdue. BTW here in USA insurance won’t cover the Mini, because they regard it as a LUXURY!! I’m a senior and paying 1114.00 is a lot, but I travel and need less weight and want the compact style and ease of no distilled water. Wow that’s considered a luxury!!!! Now I’m not sure what the right machine is for me, but when I get it figured out I’m DEFINITELY getting your Sleep HQ app. Can you advise me in any way, would love your input? Thanks so much. ❤❤❤
I’m due for a new machine through my insurance. No more Phillips product for me. I decided a year ago to use my old Resmed after repeatedly waking up with my heart pounding with the Dreamstation. I would even pay out of pocket for a ResMed if I had to vs a Free Phillips.
I just recently got diagnosed with apnea and got a ResMed AS 11. Not happy about having to use it, but the quality of sleep I’m getting to finally experience is nice. Good to see that my first CPAP device is a good one.
Hi Nick, thank you for your great videos! I have been following you channel for over a year now and have benefitted greatly! Can I ask you 2 questions? 1) I have the older resmed s10, is it's auto mode as good as the s11? 2) what is the O2 monitor that you been using? And where can I buy it? Is it on Amazon? Thank you!
G'day, thanks for the kind words. 1. Yes it's still the same auto algorithm. Nothing has changed 2. Let me just say you are awesome! I now have had my machine for over a month it’s a resvent and my situation is like Dave. It went from 15 with out the machine up to 32 45 and even 55. I got a full face mask , it still was up to 55. I just went to the lung pulmonary doctor and the guy who sells the machines tried to read my card but he couldn’t get it right because the password wasn’t working. This has been a big headache. Sooo that being said, I haven’t been using it ! I tried calling the company they haven’t called me back. The company that charged my insurance 900 and charged me 108. Co pay. I got the machine not from my Dr. But from a company called Rotech they are in Florida! I’m so pissed off . The pulmonary Dr. Office gave me the nose mask which I am a mouth breather but I’m going to try the strips on the mouth. The pulmonary Dr offered the surgery where they put something under your skin and a wire connection and it triggers you to breathe but I’m scared of that whole wire thing. My Dr in California said he had a heart attack because he had apnea for so many years no cpap. I don’t know Nick. But I’m grateful for you!!
Hi Michelle, that's very kind of you. Sounds like you're having a tough time! Just keep at it mate and keep learning and i'm sure you will do well. Best wishes. Nicko
Very insightful! I just got diagnosed(again!) with sleep apnea and seeing my doctor next Friday. I'm guessing he will give me a script for a machine so I want to make sure I choose the correct model if given the choice to up my chances of success this time around. I noticed the Phillips gives you the option to turn the auto mode off and become a regular sleep apnea machine. Does Res Med give you the same option?
Thanks so much for the Info, Uncle Nicko! I'm a younger guy who has been diagnosed with sleep apnea, but I never could get use to CPAP Therapy. So I gave up on it. I recently decided, I need to do better about my health and wanted to start using my CPAP again (DreamStation 1) but no matter the mask I use, I can't keep it on. I learned today that there is/was a recall on the DreamStation 1 CPAP but I have no idea what to do from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Nicko
This is great information. What would be your recommendation for a compact CPAP unit? I have Phillips ( i know I know) that I haven’t used in over a year because I am waiting on my replacement to arrive. I use a rested 10 at home and now am taking it with me when I travel. I just prefer a smaller travel version if possible. thanks for your help with this!!
Great information Nick, this prompted me to get signed on the SleepHQ. Do all the Phillips machines use the same algorithm as the Dream Station Go that you showed. I have the original dream station auto machine with toxic foam and the poor build quality Dream Station 2 they sent me. Couldn't you just set a higher low pressure on the auto machine, mine was 5 I believe originally and I changed it to 11.5 minimum.
G'day Rob, glad you enjoyed the vid and welcome to the sleephq family. Yes all Philips have the same algorithm and i don't think they've ever changed it since taking over Respironics in 2006. He could increase the min pressure yes however a good auto algorithm shouldn't need the user to come up with work around fixes. Cheers
I’ve always said that the two are different. The best way I can describe it is the Resmed is the sports car fast to react. And the Philips as a hippy surfer dude driving a VW Micro Bus looking for a taco stand. It gets there but gets lost a few times along the way. LOL. 🤣
Haha, great comment ED. The ResMed also has 2 x algorithm response modes! Soft and standard so basically you can get that sports car with a turbo if you like haha. Cheers
Did his doctor actually prescribe autoset? 9 min is still a long time and I suspect he was prescribed CPAP. Regardless, Resmed is clearly the better product. How do I get my money back for my multiple recalled Philips devices?
Nikko what is an o2 ring where can i get one and how do you track the readings during sleep? What is the recommended brand model for us low income types.
Hi Mate, it's a SleepHQ O2 Ring - www.sleephq.com/product/sleephq-o2-ring/ . This link ships from Melbourne. you can also buy them direct in the U.S - sleeplay.com/products/o2-ring-oxigen-ha . Cheers mate. Nicko
I will never buy Phillips again toxic foam two machines started smoking and Phillips did not care. Machines catching fire is a known issue yet they haven’t recalled them. Thanks for this post I’ll be buying a resmed this week
Thanks I am getting my replacement Phillips this week yet I am weighing getting a Resmed 11 in the year ahead. I paid for my machine in 2020 before the world went to hell because Insurance was a rip off wanting me to lease it for a year at a cost that would have been way more than paying outright... Thanks for your videos and your advice
@@603adventures9 Thanks That is what I got Truly an amazing Machine to use should be my machine for about 5 yrs I hope. the Phillips replacement was Trash my 1st one was better than the one they sent total Garbage.... Thanks for your Input
How do you do those tests so you know what to do . i have the dreamstation that was replaced but bought a res med 10 waiting for that to be fixed . so much better , so is there something out there i tried Oscar when i was using dreamstation keep up the good work Nick
Hey mate, i just do it on www.sleephq.com which i developed with my best mate. It's free so give it a go. Just grab your SD card, insert it into a card reader and drag the files across into sleephq. DONE!
Great video and channel. I am searching for something similar but slightly different. I currently use a Phillips dreamstation ASV. My ahi is typically 1 or less, however, I have periodic episodes in the first couple hours of sleep where I jolt awake completely out of breath and with a pounding heart. My sleep doctor has no idea what it is. I'm wondering if the air curve 10 ASV algorithm would also be more aggressively tuned than my dreamstation and help mitigate the onset of these issues and correct them sooner?
Hi Rob, i doubt they have even looked at it since they took over respironics back in 2006. I don't think they've even tried to improve it. No one apart from yours truely is looking close enough. Cheers mate. Nicko
Hi Nicko - you stated in the video that the auto algorithm on the Philips DreamStation Go Auto model is not good. QUESTION-1 : Does this shit auto algorithm also apply to the full sized (DS1) DreamStation 1 CPAP AUTO model ??? QUESTION-2: what about the DS2 - does this also have the same shit auto algorithm ? QUESTION-3 : if the Philips auto algorithm is so bad, do you have any ideas on why Philips has not tried to resolve these fundamental issues ???
1 - Yes 2 - Yes 3 - Yes I imagine it has something to do with FDA regulation. IE, if you are making changes that effect the therapeutics of a device, does that mean you need new certifications etc. It will be the regulatory burden i imagine. Either way, they are shit. Cheers
I know this is purely anecdotal but I have noticed that if my Dreamstation and Airsense are set at the same pressure, for example 10cm, the Dreamstation feels quite a bit lower. Also Dave may have better results with his Dreamstation if the auto settings weren't so far apart. Because his ave. pressure is in the teens he might want to bracket it much closer to his average. Instead of 5 min 20 max he could try 13 min 18 max. Not sure if he could tolerate 13 at the start of his therapy though. Cheers.
I got the Dreamstation (more like a nightmare station) and then it was recalled a few months later. I still haven’t received the replacement, but I don’t want another Philips. Both due to their pathetic recall handling and after seeing the results of this video. I asked for a refund instead of a replacement but both Philips and the seller refused. Is there a way to resell them (assuming I ever get the replacement)? It would be new in box because I refuse to use another Philips device, ever.
Hey bro, yeah most clinics will buy them off you or let you trade them in at discounted prices. Can also go through the normal FB marketplace and FB groups channels etc. Cheers
Mine is also extremely high, I’m about to switch from Phillips to RESMED to see if that helps me more. I tried every mask and none worked for me so I think it’s the machine, and my doctor messed with the settings several times.
Great video as always. Have you ever reviewed the Prisma smart max? I’d be interested to hear your thought on it. Long story short I moved from one part of the the UK to another and they changed me from the resmed 10 to the prisma. The prisma app (since getting a good mask) shows 1-4 AHI which sounds great but I sometimes wonder how accurate it is.
The reason for my concern is I was recently diagnosed with atrial fabulation and an enlarged right ventricle. After lots of tests they found it has been years of sleep apnea untreated that has caused it. I’m only 40 so it’s been a bit of a shock, hence my concern to know the machine so working well. I’ve always stayed in reasonably good shape but heavy weight training has also be an adding factor.
G'day Theo, i don't know if i will review it mate but i will certainly do some great tutorials on it shortly. Currently a lot of my time is being direct towards sleephq as it's a lot of work. Cheers brother

Hey I just want to say thanks for this channel, Nick. I started CPAP about a month ago (Resmed 11 with pillows) and in two nights dropped my AHI from 22 to
Just started CPAP and went from 75AHI...to around 4 during these first two weeks...oxygen was also dropping to high 70s!
Do you go to chiropractor? I used to have similar problems to what you describe but an adjustment got rid of acid reflux and night time pees. probably still snore though.
G'day Matt, thanks for the wonderful comment mate. Glad to hear you're on the road to recovery! Cheers
Same machine, same results! 86AHI ,down to 1.7- 2.5 AHI . No more snoring at all!!! No more 3- 4 trips to the bathroom. I positively explode out of bed in the morning! Life changing for sure!!!
Wellvue O2 ring to track sleep spo2.
Does your heating tube warm up?
Hi Tammy, keep on trying mate! You'll get there
Thank you Nick, I'm a respiratory therapist and sleep technologist, I setup PAP equipment daily.
Thanks for the great comment mate. Appreciate you sharing your experience and expertise. Cheers
Just realized that I was signed into a different account for my comment above. 😂
Nicko
Why are you comparing the DS Go to the Resmed 11?
@@busigh did you watch the video?

Nice one mate. Thanks for the great feedback. Overtime you will start to notice improvements in those daytime energy levels and sleep quality
Hey brother, thanks for the great comment! You're on the right track mate. Nicko
Hi Rod, sounds like you're doing great brother. keep it up!
You’re a great voice for this condition. Props for being an excellent resource
Great to hear it brother! Congrats
Thanks Nick for your consistently useful videos! I’m in the States and have been using a ResMed 11 for 7 months. I have good support from my Rx fortunately, but all I learn from your channel has made my transition more effective, smoother and increased my understanding 👍 Keep up the great work !
Hey buddy, great to hear it! Thanks for the love
Niko Thanks to following you I managed to score 100 on my Resmed and stay well into the high 90s ! Thanks for the help !
That's awesome
This is so informative! waiting for my ResMed AirMini to arrive next week. I'll nerd out more on auto algorithm
Glad you enjoyed it Tammy. Thank you
Uncle Nikko, one of the best channels on RUclips!! Great information keep up the great work!
My Man! That's for the great comment and feedback. Much love
Nicko
i think ol' dave should get his pressures tightened up from 5-20 to like 11-15 and we'd see a lot better results. great vid man
Good advice brother! Cheers
This probably the most informative video I've watched for CPAP. This is more information than I received from my doctor LOL 😆😂
Haha, i get this a lot! Cheers
Hey brother, great advice and thanks for your 6 month channel membership. Means a lot. Nicko
Not always true i had a ahi of 20 on dream 1 switched to resmed now mine is 2
Thank you for doing these comparisons. I'm thinking about replacing my older cpap machine before it stops working, and it helps to know which manufacturers do a better job with apap.
You're welcome Hilary. Cheers
very helpful in giving me the information i need to determine which cpap to get. Thank you!
Cheers
I had sam issues switched to resmed now my ahi is 2
Hi Nicko, great information and comparison between the 2 units. Look forward to when the Z2 can be reviewed by your "SleepHQ".

G'day Kev, cheers legend. I'm going to have to get them to give me the software development kit because that Breas app needs a touch of Nicko haha. I recon they will give it to me also! I'll shoot them an email

Man I’m glad I found your channel. Thanks.
Awesome brother! So am i
So glad I have the newest Resmed Autosense 11 and will never use my Philips Respironics DS 1 ever again, even after the new foam replacement. It's like night and day. My flow rate always looks perfect now and most nights my AHI is less than 1 and sometimes it's zero! It's far superior and your video was most interesting tonight.
G'day, thanks for sharing your experience! Glad the AS11 is working well for you
Nick, great review mate. This brings to mind that if you get a bad reading (constantly) it MAY have a detrimental effect on someone's capacity to drive, which in turn may prevent them from earning a living as a professional driver or airline pilot or worse traffic controller??? Which really drives home, having the correct machine is paramount!
Great comment mate! Very true
Glad you enjoyed it brother. Keep up the great work!

Great stuff! That's exactly what i want to hear. Congrats
You're welcome Susan. Glad you enjoyed the vid. Best wishes Nick
Thanks for the tip Alex. Cheers
He should try straight CPAP at 14cm, I believe the DSGO can be set for that.
Why wait for apnea to occur to adjust. This algorithm allows ongoing apnea. CPAP should PREVENT apnea events. Great video, thanks,
Your enhancing the intrigue and suspense kept my attention captivated while I learned something so vital & valuable & lifesaving about oxygen levels.
Hi Chuck, really appreciate the great comment mate. Glad you enjoyed the show
Fantastic video!
Cheers
This is the GO model, the algo is fine on the full machines, it's actually better than the resmed machines.
Really apreciate this video Nick! This helps me to make up my mind about what new machine to get.
The Phillips machine has bad filters and the Airsense 11 has a problem with the heating tube they are covering up.
Now what do we do?
G'day mate, i'd love to hear about this heated tube problem. Can you expand a little? Cheers
Another brilliant, informative clip. Thank you Nicko
Always welcome mate. Thank you
I got a CPAP 2 weeks ago. The first week wasn't fun. I kept waking up because of the mask. The last few nights I've slept way better! Keep wearing it and you will get used to it. I can't wait to see my energy levels in another week or so. I'm starting to feel alive and able to focus again. It's worth the trouble to get used to it all !
Great stuff! Keep it up
Update?
@@magnusred2945 Still living it, I actually get good sleep now!!! I dialed in my pressure to go from 9 to 12 and my AHI is about 1.5 per hour. I'm so glad I got a CPAP!!! I must have been waking up dozens of times a night without the machine. I didn't really notice waking up but I was always tired for about 2 years. Now I feel alive again.
@@KPHVAC WOW so it really gave you more energy??? Hopefully my CPAP gets here soon...
Hi Ryan, the AirSense 11 ticks a lot of boxes. Cheers
@@CPAPReviews I love your reviews very detailed! Thank you again!
Very interesting, thanks for sharing your experience
Amazing , thank you for the breakdown… was considering the Philips for travel unit …. But definitely sticking with Resmed air mini
I think that's a very wise decision my friend
Hi Nick, this was a very informative video and I would like to see the Airsense 10 v Sleepstyle
Recording Time: 432 Minutes
Snoring was noted, there was a total of 376 respiratory events.
Of the events, the total number of apneas was 71 (55 obstructive, 11 mixed and 5 central) and 305 hypopneas.
My respiratory index was 52.2 events per hour of study time.
The mean oxygen saturation during the study was 87% with a minimum of 73%.
I spent 275.1 minutes at oxygen saturation measuring less than 90% (63.7% of recording time)
And 206.8 minutes at oxygen saturation measured at or less than 88%
Cheers mate, yeah you need a cpap haha. You'll feel like a new man once you get use to it
@@CPAPReviews thank you!! I’m so excited!!
Another good reason to stay well clear of Phillips breathing products.
Absolutely mate
Thanks for the hard work Nick!
Always welcome Scott, cheers buddy
it’s now april 2023. once i found out about the recall, i stopped using as ordered. miserable exhausting sleep. i HAD TO START USING AGAIN this week, I hated having returned back to a lifetime of 24/7 exhaustion and poor life.
Class action
lawsuit nothing to lose.
This is handy info if I ever need to replace my machine. Philips are lucky not to be sued and instructed to recall and refund all their machines. I am happy with my BMC auto cpap.
Cheers Mal. There's over 100 class actions against Philips currently! They're up to their eyeballs in legal cases. Cheers
@@CPAPReviews Wow, that's a lot. That's good. People's well-being is more important than money.
Thanks! You are doing great work. No one explains better.
Based on your advice, I have changed my Philips Dreamstation2 to constant pressure. It seems to have helped.
Happy to help Jeff. Cheers
It must be so frustrating to get a machine that's supposed to help you get refreshing sleep, and struggle to adjust to it, only to succeed in that, but still have all these problems and often without the doctor even caring to investigate the raw data.
I’m happy I got started on Resmed
Great stuff! Congrats

G'day Randy, it's been well known for a long time mate. Read the links in the description
ResMed also do the AirMini which is a popular travel unit
if you want a small one for travelling you can get the airmini from resmed.
Cheers
At first I thought you held your CPAP upsidedown until I realized your shirt words are backwards too. Ah okay. I get it now :D
I am glad in Canada I was given Redmed. Still having issues though and learning from you about my chart. Wonder what my O2 is at
I’ve always said that the two are different.

Holy crap. I'm getting a resmed machine
Wise decision my friend
Great video and channel. I am searching for something similar but slightly different. I currently use a Phillips dreamstation ASV. My ahi is typically 1 or less, however, I have periodic episodes in the first couple hours of sleep where I jolt awake completely out of breath and with a pounding heart. My sleep doctor has no idea what it is. I'm wondering if the air curve 10 ASV algorithm would also be more aggressively tuned than my dreamstation and help mitigate the onset of these issues and correct them sooner?
So glad I got the ResMed from the get go! 👍🏻
Good call my friend. Cheers
Fascinating information. Have to wonder if anyone at Philips has any idea or even cares.
1 - Yes
2 - Yes
3 - Yes
I imagine it has something to do with FDA regulation. IE, if you are making changes that effect the therapeutics of a device, does that mean you need new certifications etc. It will be the regulatory burden i imagine. Either way, they are shit. Cheers
@@CPAPReviews… thanks for the detailed response - much appreciated
I know this is purely anecdotal but I have noticed that if my Dreamstation and Airsense are set at the same pressure, for example 10cm, the Dreamstation feels quite a bit lower. Also Dave may have better results with his Dreamstation if the auto settings weren't so far apart. Because his ave. pressure is in the teens he might want to bracket it much closer to his average. Instead of 5 min 20 max he could try 13 min 18 max. Not sure if he could tolerate 13 at the start of his therapy though. Cheers.
Great comment mate. Cheers
I don't have either machine but this was very informative. Any chance of putting the F&P Sleepstyle on SleepHQ?

@@CPAPReviews OMG that will be SO amazing! thanks for all your hard work
I got the Dreamstation (more like a nightmare station) and then it was recalled a few months later.
Cheers
Is this the type of data my doctor is looking at to make recommendations? Or do I need to manage this for myself?
Hi Nick, will you be doing a review on the Prisma 20a anytime soon?
G'day Theo, i don't know if i will review it mate but i will certainly do some great tutorials on it shortly. Currently a lot of my time is being direct towards sleephq as it's a lot of work. Cheers brother

Looks like Respironics is designing the Dreamstation algorithm to save wear and tear on the blower and other components, IMO.
That would go against Philips core values 'make cheap toxic crap that doesn't last'
