  • Because I was a young folkie in the early 60s, I knew this tune well already by the time the Byrds’ iconic version hit the airwaves. My rendition owes more to Pete’s original than to Roger & Company’s (excellent) cover, except maybe for tempo.
From what he said, Pete Seeger wouldn’t mind my giving writer priority to the Book of Ecclesiastes, since the lyrics are almost entirely a slightly reordered and nearly verbatim excerpt from that part of the Bible, and Pete only added a final line and the title. He did come up with the beautiful melody, of course.
So: Music by Pete, lyrics by someone a long time ago. Kind of a Elton John - Bernie Taupin thing, I guess. I grant you, it’s a little odd to equate Bernie Taupin with Ecclesiastes.
    ("Anyway…the thing is…what I really mean…")
I love this one in spite of what’s always struck me as Pete’s hedging his bets with that last line. I mean, up until then the entire text is a hard-nosed, pragmatic admission of the necessary existence of opposites in everything. Light and dark, up and down, Yin and Yang. The song cites love and peace but allows time for hate, and even war, of which Pete wasn’t known as a big fan.
But he gets the last word: “A time for peace!” though without its opposite number there at the end, it seems an rather idealistic contrast to all the pragmatism that preceded it (by 2500 years, more or less). It’s all been yin & yang, yin & yang, yin & yang, throughout, until that last line: “Yin”.
But oh well, I love old Pete and his idealism and his tune. And peace is definitely the better choice.

Beautiful! I love your rendition! Your guitar is tuned in drop D but very low right? Thanks

Indeed it's Drop D, tuned two whole steps down (C on both outer pairs of strings), here capo'd up3 frets, so I end up in D flat.

Nice! I never tried to tune my 12 strings that low... I'm afraid it's gonna buzz terribly! Will try that tmw, thanks!

@@CalicoSkies18That's Lead Belly's tuning and I started playing listening to his stuff. If you do tune down that far you need to use heavier gauge strings, or buzzing will be inevitable and tone will go away. This might necessitate widening the slots in the nut, though, which (I guess) I had done years ago to accommodate the thicker strings I use. A good compromise is to tune halfway between (D for the outer pairs), which allows you a bit more leeway in both the buzz and nut departments, but if you're interested, here are the string gauges on that big 12 going from the first (unison) course to the 6th (octave) course: .013 & .013; .016 & .016; .026 & .010; .035 & .017; .045 & .022; and .056 & .028. It's a weird set I piece together from medium-gauge 6-string sets which I add singles to. Pain in the butt, but I've never found a storebought set that does well in this tuning.

@@alonzogarbanzo Wow thanks so much for giving me all this information! I'm gonna save your reply and I might try it someday. At the moment, I play my 12 strings a whole step down. All the best x

@@alonzogarbanzo Can I ask you a last question? I believe the purpose of playing in that tuning is that it makes it easier as playing a 12 strings is no easy... ?
