HD Dry on snare w/coated G2s on toms for me - but ask me again tomorrow! They all sound good. It's just a matter of matching the right tone to the project.
The UV1s were definitely my favorite. They provided the most balance between the attack and the tone of the drum. I like that Evan’s describes them as “Pre-EQ’d” because it is an accurate statement to the sound you get with them.
Excellent comparison! Love the sound of the toms (with every head), and you picked a much more interesting groove than the standard 'snare-tom-tom-tom' fill. Gives a very helpful contextual sound. That said, if I went back to coated heads (over my current G2 clear) I'd probably do the UV1.
Great comparison. I really like the UV2's and the EC2S's. I would love to see a video comparing the EC Resonant head to G1s. With G2 Clear, G2 Coated, EC2S Clear, and EC2S Frosted for the batter heads.
@@decimalstudiosuk Awesome. Your audio and video are fantastic with clear playing that shows off the heads very well. Looking forward to more videos. Already subscribed.
HD dry and EC2 clear sounds best to me when I watched the video on my cellphone but when I watched the video using my home theater sound, definitely the UV'2 was a killer. Love it.
This is the best heads comparison out there! Straight to the point and very well done, really helpful thank you guys. I usually use the EC2s to record too, did you like the UV2s enough to make the switch or do you still prefer the EC2s?
Thanks Bobby! Jack actually took the UV2s on tour and he said they are incredibly durable. After the comparison video I ended up with the UV1s and they are still on the kit today! Very durable!
Decimal Studios awesome, thanks! Any chance you guys have, or plan on posting a tuning/recording tutorial? Your toms sound incredible and I’d love to know your methods
We were planning on it but with the current situation it's a little bit hard and the future of the studio is uncertain. We'll definitely keep it in mind for the future. :)
1st - great comparison, thank you. 2nd - did anyone else notice the ripple in the Black Chrome head? I know it's picky, but we all know what that does to the overall sound/resonance of the head. I can immediately tell the difference once I notice and take care of a ripple, can't you? As for the heads, I'm a Black Chrome/Glass combo user. Sounds/looks amazing on my B/B black clouds silver linings. But I'm now eager to give Hydraulics and UV2's a try. As well as give the EC2's another try now that I'm using glass resos. Can't believe I've never tried Hydraulics all this time. lol
Caleb... I played hydraulic for years and switched to Black Chrome a few years ago... very similar sound when tuned the same, main difference to me is the BC has better note/stick definition. The Oil in hydraulic heads kinda sucks away the stick attack, but it evens out the EQ making them easy to tune. For me the BC covers a lot more styles of music and accentuates the quality of my kit a little more.
I’m using uv1 on vintage leedy 15” snare drum. The selling points are sound, but the uv coating looks new after thousands of whacks.......that was a nice demo. The original hydraulic heads , probably those reds also, would sound better tuned lower and with more dampening, a real dry Stax, 70s sound, (imo) Badaboom
Thank you very much for this comparison - i was deceiding between getting G2 Coated, UV2s or EC2 (maybe with frosting) and I´m now settled with the UV2s :) thanks for the comparison!
Tanks for this very helpful comparison, I personally prefer the sound of the G2 Coated heads or alternatively the EC2 and HD Dry heads. Unfortunately there’s no mention for the resonance heads used throughout the tests, I’d appreciate having thus additional information.
Hi guys I play Remo Emporers on my Tom's. But hearing the UV2 heads I'm going to change. Also the guy at the drum shop near me said they are so durable you won't have to change them so often. Also do Evans do a uv bass drum heads.
I'm glad that our video has helped you choose your next set of heads! Jack has been using them since we made the video and he says that they have held up really well durability wise. Evans don't make the UV2 for kick drum, their largest size is 18".
I've been running UV2s on all my toms lately but I think I might switch to UV1s for the 10" and 12" rack toms, leaving UV2s on the 14" and 16" on the floor. I'm interested to hear if the sounds still blend well across the kit while letting the smaller shells sing a little more easily
i use tha classic G2 Clear and G1 Clear combo on my personal drumset, while my bass drum uses obviously an Emad! i wish Evans would make a EQ3 for toms because i would use those in a heartbeat
Thanks. I have to say I don't understand why I never hear some rolls on these heads that are being demo'd. Just some singles and some doubles for just a couple seconds would be nice.
Hi Guys How are you ? Beautiful sound your drums :-) One question, its possible share with me the EQ (equalization) that was configured in the toms in this video ? Thanks a lot
There is no EQ in the session, we did add a tiny amount of EQ on the board on the way in but it was minimal! The whole idea is that there is minimal processing so that you can hear the drums. We also used the Audix mics, check those out, they have a pretty extreme frequency response to compliment the toms anyway. Hope that helps.
This really helped me to decide that I'll be getting the UV2's on the toms once my ec2's wear out 😊 How exactly did you tune the toms? Not looking for exact notes here but rather: Heads to the same pitch, or higher, or...? Thanks!
Personally my top two favorites were the UV2 and the red Hydraulics on the snare and as for the toms the red Hydraulics for sure! What reso heads were y'all using for this video for each of the toms and the snare??
I've been playing coated G2s and coated Tom heads period, for over 20+ years but those EC2 clear heads sound pretty killer. What's the biggest difference you think, anyone w experience? Thanks!
UV1 is for sure my go to head for any situation if you were to ask me to pick one. Reasoning being that dampening can always be added. But you can’t gain resonance.
Well I've been thinking about the dry one, It'd be good for hip-hop. Jaystiqs was demonstrating and promoting it on a tasty video and it got me thinking.. Annoyingly, i like the sound of the red one, but i have that one! and can't get satisfied with it. I have a yamaha stage custom jazz fusion setup.. In a barn with very little sound dampening. Does the fact i have an old remo resonant skin make a difference? Never too sure on that one.. Also should i consider new snares? They 'seem' fine.... Thanks, i'd appreciate any info.
We always LOVE new skins so it's definitely worth a go with the resonant skin. Most people don't replace them as often as they should but they do lose their elasticity! We also like 40 snare wires, gives the extra sizzle!
Whatever happened to the EC1 coated heads (toms and snare)? I have a set and love them, not sure why Evans stopped making them and I don't see any reviews. My next set will be UV1s.
@@decimalstudiosuk I'm not sure... the Evans website has no mention of them other than the EC1 Reverse Dot Snare Batter. I pulled my Rogers kit out of storage and tuning up now with the EC1s.... UV1 set arrives tomorrow, but I'll probably keep the EC1s on for awhile and see how they compare.
Like the comparison I really love the ec2 but I am not sure if they are durable enough because I’m seeing stick marks. I do love the HD dry snare. Thinking about purchasing one but the hydraulics and the g2 coated are really good. Do you guys think the ec2’s are durable
They are durable but not as durable as the Hydraulics because those things are super thick! Which has a detrimental affect on the tone, in our opinion.
I can't remember what we tuned to but we use this tuning method as detailed in our blog: www.decimalstudios.co.uk/decimal-blog/2019/11/19/how-to-tune-drums-to-notes
The EQ was the same across the board. There are so many videos on RUclips that compare heads but the tunings are totally different. This was the main point of our video to compare the finer details of the heads without the distraction of different tunings :)
Guys it's been 3 years but i have a question. People tend to use 2 ply heads for durability but isn't a 10 mil single ply head more durable than a 7.5x2 two ply head? Because it's a 7.5 mil on top which you constantly hit. And of course easier to damage than a 10 mil one. I never broke a single ply head but lots of G2s and emperors.
You know what, I really don't know because we change our heads frequently due to the tone being lost once the elasticity has gone. However, you have definitely given me an idea for a new video, I'll just need work out how to do it! Anyone wanna confirm: I'm A-Bing the Hydraulics and the HD Dry on the snare in this recording and they sound almost identical--except for a very small amount more overtone ring from the Hydraulics.
Hey Makaveli! They do sound similar you are correct. That's because they are all tuned to exactly the same pitch. This is deliberately done so that we can show off the nuances of the different drum heads. If you are listening on a phone you will find that you can't hear the variations of the drum heads because you will only be able to hear the notes, which are the same. There are so many videos on RUclips comparing drum heads where the heads are tuned completely differently and therefore doesn't give you an accurate representation of the differences of the heads.
I agree; there isn't a significant difference among them. After a awhile my ears start playing tricks on me because I'm listening for a difference that's barely audible.
