This is the Bob Ross of woodworking. I built my first patio chair and have been nervous about finishing it. Your videos boosted my confidence. Thanks!!
Thank you so much for all of your videos! They are very helpful and i often look through them when needing some help with my woodwork projects. Greetings from finland!
Thank you for making this video Scott. I can't tell you how many beautiful projects that I completely destroyed because I chose the wrong finish. Thanks again, keep'm coming.
The problem with not using stain for me is I mostly buy pine, so it wont match most rooms of my house. On the ones that it does, I agree, and I apply just some water based finish.
Thank you for this video it really helped me out with some upcoming projects. It also explained why purel damaged a furniture piece I obtained from a 2nd hand shop.
On the primer, this is very important on drywall. Not using a primer will suck the moisture out of the paint leaving it easy to peal off the wall. That is one major mess to fix what the previous owner did. Dust everywhere and mess. Well worth the price of a primer to avoid a weekend projecd from becoming a seasonal one. Shelac and lacquer aren't as durable. Lacquer is very easy to work with but requires different solvents/cleaners. If you're using steel wool, you don't want to use anything water based unless you want some rust stains in your finish.
I’m looking to make a small wooden bridge over a dry creek. It would be a small quantity of wood, so I can afford to use a nice wood. Initially I was thinking about cedar. What wood would you recommend, and what kind of finish would give the wood a deep rich color but still protect from the elements?
In my limited experience with exterior wood finishes, I haven't found any that will keep wood with a rich color without a lot of work. For decking, you may have to apply 2 coats of finish per year due to the punishing UV rays and weather. Sikkins is a brand I've seen to relatively well.
Yes, you can do that. I've finished several projects that way to I get the deep 3-D effect from the penetrating oil, with the protection of the polyurethane. Make sure the oil has a lot of time to dry first. Also, you will need about 3 coats of wipe on poly to equal one coat of regular poly. It' goes on really thin, but it's easy to apply. I hope that helps. Scott
Very informative. I bought a set of dinning table chairs a few years ago and they had this very mild sheen finish to them that the shop worker applied with a cotton ball (or what looked like it) and dried almost instantaneously. The finish is worn off at places now and it needs some maintenance but I can't get to the shop. From that description, can you tell me what kind of finish that was or how can I fix the chairs myself? thanks a million.
Here's a video on how to identify the type of wood finish, on our Fixing Furniture channel - ruclips.net/video/Xp4layfBXkA/видео.html. From what you're describing, it sounds like shellac. Clean off the existing finish with a damp cloth with soap and water. Let it dry thoroughly. Then apply a new coat of shellac. I hope that helps. Scott
I need your advice on blotchy treads resulting from Minwax Stainable Wood Filler. These are the steps I did: 1. Sanded 60 grit 2. Used Minwax Stainable Wood Filler 3. Sanded 220 4. Used Minwax Pre-stain 5. One coat of Minwax Red Oak 215 stain. However, I had staple holes from carpet and used Minwax Stainable Wood Filler. The stain did not take and now have light dollar spots. What do you recommend to fix? Not sure what type of wood I have? Thank you for your RUclips videos.
Here's a video where I patched some holes that needed to be stained darker. See if this helps solve the problem. ruclips.net/video/-gTaSrWcnBQ/видео.html
Hi Scott Bennett I really appreciate your RUclips channel and you work that you do I have a question if you can help me with pleas Do I Apply Clear Varnish to Painted Kitchen Cabinets? Having in consideration the pain that I use water-based London Blue Spray Painting Regards Michael
Hi Michael. The most durable paint finish for kitchen cabinets is lacquer, but it's highly toxic to use. If you've already painted the cabinets with water-based eggshell, I'm not sure what a clear varnish would do to it. It might not adhere to the paint or it might crackle the paint finish. I recommend reaching out to the paint manufacturer to ask what could be applied on top. They might have a formulation that is designed for it. I hope that helps. Scott
No, tung oil is a finish by itself. The only time I would add a film finish overtop would be to further protect it from spills... not common in drawers. I hope that helps. Scott

The Minwax Helsman is labelled as urethane, why do you call it varnish, which I thought was a term to refer to all clear wood finishes?

You've got to be from Montreal or something with all that French on those cans :)
Ah, you're observent! I'm from the Toronto area. In Canada, all of our product labels are bilingual; English and French. Cheers
