I was always under the impression that the CMOS battery is being used while the computer is off, but not when it’s on. In fact I thought it is being charged when the computer is on.
Am I wrong? I truly don’t know, so pls ignore my ignorance.

I spent 3 hours trouble shooting my build till I finally found that I had yo take out and put back in my CMOS battery. Just thought I would put that here since it reminded me haha
Some boards actually hate it when you do that, and relies on the CMOS CLR jumper pins not removal of the battery. Something I learnt while fixing some dumpster 4th gen boards!
been there, since then performing a CMOS reset has become one of the first things i try when fixing a machine. solves a lot of issues.
Actually, newer pcs dont have a cmos battery since the way the BIOS stores configuration in newer motherboards is non-volatile meaning it wont reset if the computer loses power. On modern pcs it is just used to keep track of time while your pc is off.
Actually RTC will restore the date time after power loss.
Battery is there to keep the old habits like bios reset.

here's a tip, if your PC won't turn on the first time you ever turn it on, do a power drain then remove the CMOS and wait about a mjnute then try again with ur in :))
This happened to me the first time I built my pc, and i shit myself coz my dad bought me the components and wanted a technician to build so I don't mess it up, but after days of watching YT vids on how to resolve it worked

Not always true. As long as the PSU stays on and connected it will keep the settings, date, and time. If the mobo loses all sources of power (AKA both the PSU _and_ the CMOS battery), only then will stuff be lost.
Also, (possibly not so) fun fact: when your computer is off, the power supply is still providing power with always-on pins, hence why you should unplug completely before working on it.
Edit: @Jeff Waters reminded me that you _also_ need to drain any juice in the capacitors on the board. The easiest way is to (once power is disconnected) press the power button. I personally will tap the power button a couple times, hold it for a few seconds, then tap it a couple more times. You can also jitter-click the power button if you have any pent-up rage from troubleshooting computers lol
Just hold the power button until led doesn't light anymorw, when capacitors are drained there isn't any energy anymore. 24 pin is pretty hard to remove sometimes.

the battery is powering up CMOS because like RAM its's not state memory and to not lose the bios settings it needs to be powered by this little battery, it's actually pretty useful knowledge

If your computer connected to electricity, it don't use a CMOS battery, it uses battery only when it disconnected from electricity, and you will lose settings of bios

Actually really just depends on your CMOS battery is just there for emergency standby power for the bios because as long as your computer is plugged in there still standby power that normally keeps everything powered
When the PC is on, there are some diodes on the motherboard that divert a part of the 3.3v from the ATX power supply to the CMOS, so it doesn't matter, if you take the battery out the CMOS will still receive 3.0v from the power supply.
If your PC was manufactured in the last 10 years, chances are it doesn't even have an actual CMOS - the battery only keeps the clock running when its powered off, the BIOS settings are actually in NOR flash, which is nonvolatile. But because so many tutorials still tell you to "clear CMOS" by pulling the battery, many motherboards artificially emulate the old behavior when they detect a removed battery.

this thing dosen't affect the pc so much but it might be a little bad because all of your bios settings are gonna be set to default. The battery supplies the bios chip every time which contains the saved data from bios.
I was locked up once and smuggled in a lot of computer parts to built a pc but I didn't get a cmos battery with the motherboard so I stole one from one of the computers the guards use and put it in just to get it to turn on then I took it out and returned it but I had kept it running for 16 months without a cmos battery. I had this computer setup in an old storage room nobody knew I could get in. I used the old computer junk they already had in the storage room but they had an old hp compaq windows Vista that didn't have a motherboard for some reason so I had someone delivere it after teaching them how to install the cpu and cooler over the phone. It was an i3 2130 with 8 gb ddr3 on an old dell oem mini itx motherboard.
For certain motherboards, they only save the settings with battery power if it's not plugged in. So if you don't have a battery but still plugged in the settings won't reset even if you restart or shutdown.
I had a PC build that would crash during windows start up, would get the logo and spinning dots then it would freeze. After a day of troubleshooting I changed the cmos battery and boom windows loaded. Apparently quite common.

I figured out that a CMOS battery is actually for pc users that tinker a lot with the bios. BIOS is a very important part of your system. If you screw it up, your motherboard will not boot. But that's why the CMOS battery exists, so if you screw it up, a charge from the battery holds the bios settings, and you can disconnect the current to reset the settings.
Unless you destroyed the bios after an unsuccessful flash
After a restart without the CMOS battery the computer will loose track of time and unless it updates it automatically using intermet which is unlikely to happen, you will have to refresh it manually. And consider to overclock your ram again because the motherboard forhot all ur settings.

It works fine because the CMOS battery literally only is there to provide voltage whenever there's zero power (not just turned off). Removing it only causes a problem if you lose electricity.

That 3V Lithium CR2032 cell is in parallel with the 3.3VSB rail that powers the RTC (clock) well in the chipset. So as long as the computer is plugged in and there is electrical power in the socket, there is a 3.3V supply in the mainboard even if it is powered off, running the RTC function. So it doesn't matter if the coin cell is there or not. Upon rebooting, BIOS may pop up an error.
It’s not in parallel. Sure, CR2032 is connected to the chipset, but it’s not really parallel to the 3.3VSB. You can check it by measuring a voltage between battery holder terminals and observing it yourself.
@@staidey5994 As per the intel reference board schematic, it is indeed parallel. You will not get a 3.3 V reading with multimeter probes on battery terminals because 3.3VSB and 3.0VBAT rails are connected through no return valve diodes to prevent 3.3VSB rail from charging or discharging the coin cell.

This battery is for the bios to have power even without a PSU connected, and when the computer is connected, the bios takes power from it

If i want to keep my bios settings, is it a good idea to change the cell while the pc is running? That is something i asked myself a lot of times.
you don't have to do that, the bios settings won't cleared unless you plug out power cable to the wall and/or from the power supply to the motherboard.
even then you usually didn't immediately lost the settings, you need to clear all left over electricity from the system by pressing power button a couple times
@@dualkeyboards yeh. When I lived at a place that didn't have enough power supplied to the house and breakers tripped, I lost all my bios settings every time. Twas then that it finally occurred to me to replace the battery and never had the problem again

Actually, as long as the PC still gets power while turned off, it won't clear the CMOS. At least, that's how it was for my last Mobo. Never replaced the CMOS battery on it, and it only affected me when unplugging it or during power outages.

I had a pc that never had the cmos battery in it. Didn’t bother me and didn’t cause any problems. It was a server pc that I was using for gaming.
Not entirely true. CMOS battery’s been put there in order to store the BIOS settings and keep track of date/time while the computer has no other source of power. Basically, removing a CMOS battery from a plugged computer won’t reset the BIOS settings to default, however, as soon as you disconnect the power and let the caps to drain without having CMOS battery present, only in that case the NVRAM would reset itself.
Typically motherboards won't factory reset with the CMOS battery out unless power is removed from the wall the CMOS battery is a backup battery for the BIOS the main power comes from the power supply to keep its data if power is lost from there the backup battery provides it
Cmos contains the bootrecord and bios startup data
Tho system doesnt always need it for startup since it can run temporary bios with default configurwtion, it can damage ur pc
It doesn't necessarily "hold" it it's just that there's a so the "sram"(bios ram) on the motherboard doesn't clear when the computer shuts off
Actually, if you remove the battery, and don’t unplug the power, then it will actually still retain all the BIOS settings even without a battery. You have to completely disconnect power for the settings to be reset.

Yeah it isn't really important, but it's there so it keeps time and date even when the power is off, so if you were to restart without the cmos battery, the date and time will not be set.

a fakt for you too motherbords try to recharge the battery more or less by accident and gues what it works. that is the reason why a pc that is used every day did not need a new battery for years but a pc that is used once in a week or month needs a new one after couple months
This, I learned on my own. I did it often as needed, until one fateful day, when I lost my grip of the battery and it slipped from my fingers and fell onto the motherboard... Sparks flew and the battery jumped where it landed with sparks until it landed on my video card at that moment when I unplugged it as fast as I can. Not that unplugging spared the video card from any electrical short or anything. I can never imagine myself doing that again. 😭

It will not stop running because io chipset is in power. It will only stop if any metal contact with positive charge. But don't take risk.

If you don't remove power, the settings will still be saved. Only if you remove power/turn off your power supply the cmos gets reset

I have a second hand dell vostro laptop and the previous owner had put a password on the bios so I couldn't change simple things like the boot device order.
Did the batterflip (which is how Dell emplyees do the cmos removal thing) and it off course didn't remove the security password.
So then I removed the cmos battery with the laptop turned on. It immediately turned off and I thought I had killed it. Put the cmos battery back ,turned it back on and..... security password reset .

I connect and disconnect hard drives all the time. You just need to do a rescan in diskmanager to find the drive and assign it a letter

Most Mainboards (at least all that I know) have a curcuit where the CMOS-Battery is bypassed via Schottky-Diode by the V_stb(3.3V) when the PC is connected to Mains power. So the Battery is basically bypassed as long as the PC is connected to mains power
Also consider to try taking out the wifi card on a running pc
Pretty sure it would just stop the wifi from working and when you put it back in it doesn’t work
