@@PeppoMusic Overall I don't have much issue with speed runs but I have found that the perception of speed being viewed as the hallmark of great playing to be problematic for some game genres. Consider WoW; for some time now, top guilds compete for who ever can clear the newest content the fastest and be "world first". The result is that this play style gets more attention and then the focus of developers starts to facilitate this. On paper that doesn't seem too bad but in practice it results in stripping away mechanics... for example, how many dungeons do people actually take the time to CC things and instead just power through all of it with as much damage as possible? It also spills into other games. When Method attempted to get a "world first" on killing Diablo on Infernal difficulty when D3 came out, they constantly complained about how RNG based the gearing was to the point that they believed it impossible to clear the game in any sort of reasonable time without finding exploits. The ultimate result of this is that Blizzard nerfed the ever-living hell out of D3. Now, I don't want to make this about Blizzard and I don't care whether or not D3 was or is a good or bad game. The point is that the playstyle influenced the direction of the game into something less thoughtful and this behavior is reflected all over the rpg based landscape of gaming. Just look at the increasing amount of ridiculous burst damage you can find in games like League of Legends for example.
It's a classic graphics effect (using a technique based on pixel-level convolutions) that's been around since the 90's. Its always been computationally expensive though so you'd only typically see it used on the demo scene. I wonder how the devs managed to make it performant enough to work in-game.
