This story sounds to me, like a warrior coming home that can't forgive himself for what he had to do in war. That was his beast he unleashed in combat.
The gift is his unborn child he gets to meet for the first time when he gets home.
When asking for some peace in the song, he's asking GOD to take him, & understands he's not forgiven for what he did.
Perhaps I'm a little off, but that is the story I see when you sing this one.
