Well done, assess the situation, give it a good try but know when it's not going to happen. Good professional attitude, no swearing, ranting or raving, makes a change to see a positive image of the industry.
You did right mate, I've been driving artics 21 years and I probably would of said after one shunt that I wouldn't try again and they should ofload me from the road, that's what makes you a professional driver mate is if you don't feel its right then don't do it. You did your best 👌
Fair play to you mate that was tough. I was out on my first run this weekend as a new pass and I have a new found respect for HGV drivers...its hard work driving something that big...
Totally agree, passed last month. I've started parking up/hazards on and go for a look and talk to the staff on how to approach the loading bays. Did a store drop in London for One Below, what a laugh that was 🙄
Nothing wrong with saying no, at the end of the day your in the driving seat. I’ve had the “other drivers would/have done it” and my response is always.”maybe so, but this driver isn’t”
Hi. Class 1 driving since 1982. Spot on advice. Sometimes it simply won’t fit. Use your judgment and don’t let anyone bully you. Keep up the good work. Regards. Tim
This was nail-biting stuff! But it's only made me want to get my licence more 😂 I like a challenge! Sent my D2/D4 off in the posy yesterday, theory training it is for me in the meantime!
Great call drive. The average banksman/labourer has no idea of trailer length/axle configuration, same with unit, All very well waving you in from rear, but have no idea you have to take into account where cab n/s is in relation to obstacles. Had it many times where I've stopped to get out and check, with banksman raving what I'd stopped for. When shown my n/s is showing close to a bollard, picked up by my pavement mirror, they go quiet. Well done for knowing your own/your rig's limitations - THAT'S PROFESSIONAL !! 👏👍
Thats it mate, i will always have a look and give it ago but i have no problem admitting when i feel it cannot be done. And yes some banks men can be a little annoying and just don't get how it works.
There is always a yeah yeah other drivers have done it before speech ! And you are right in saying yes that's possible depending on the truck trailer ect ect. But in this case today for me professional assessment it's a no ! But we can unload from the road of over there because it's safer. Your the driver and it's your responsibility. But you tried first even though you probably knew you couldn't every fit just shows them you are not lying! Great vlog and good knowledge
I don't drive big rigs like yours but 26ton hiab lorry for a building merchant and the stress we have to go through trying to reach some of these sites is crazy. So many hazards. Safe trucking 👍
Its one thing getting in, its another thing getting back out! Good on you mate it can be unloaded from the road and you tried it to prove it was impossible 👍🏻
We have an old saying as truck drivers, an inch is as good as a mile. Just remember the overhang on the turn and understand that a trailer reverses on its back axle and pivots on the front when going forward. I only drove trucks for about 30 years but I've yet to hear of any other driver refusing to take a load out because in my opinion it was loaded unsafely. The consignor then had to unload it and reload it to my suggestion and after a few hours sitting in the cafe it was ready for the late delivery to site. I've had lots of challenges with sites expecting me to reverse it down narrow lanes even into tight openings. The rules are that it is the responsibility of the consignee to organise the unloading and receipt of their goods under RHA and normal industry rules. If they request a lorry loader equipped delivery they still have to provide a safe and satisfactory area to do the unloading. You should be aware that any damage sustained or caused is the responsibility of the driver to report this however, if it's because of an instruction by the consignee then they could be liable to pay for the repairs. Bear in mind that sites should have proper insured liability for the type of work they do.
So very true, also when transport managers say you can get from A to B in so-n-so time and you find out they haven't been on the road for over twenty years!
This looks like some of my collections in Leicester from a pretty much residential areas. I remember going there for first time being a new driver with no experience. I was blessed not to stuck there. Absolutely hate to go there ever since. You are professional driver, well done mate.
The advise is good when there is a danger getting stuck, soft ground , overhanging buildings etc etc but if been driving for 47 years and this was doable, first time you were almost there .
You made the right choice mate, doesnt matter who thinks what. theyre all good kids til it goes tits up, then they abandon you and your the only one whos in the s--t. Good call👍 Plus.. the way you got out through the housing estate was top notch, id trust your judgement.
I wouldn't worry just do something like trunking then you wont get into situations like this, and when you get more experienced you will look forward to days like this, well if your a bit crazy like me haha
can only say, ive had worse lol literally had to knock on doors for people to move cars and help guide me through a gap cause someone parked on double yellows making it just about possibe for me, both sides markerlights dragging on cars one way system.. honestly thought i was just gunna have to call the boss haha, well done though pal!!!!
i get u i do but if you was over to the right 2 more inches at the start on the last atempt you would av nailed it but hate it when they say other drivers do it all the time
I agree..but me personally, if I even think there is a slight risk, the answer is no..The customer can either unload where I think it's safe, or load goes back..simples
As a 48 year international driver I do believe I’ve put artics into places I shouldn’t have but successfully, now retired I started in 1973 and my advice to any driver is use every available inch and always get out and look …Drivers today have it easy with Sat navigation we had maps and our tongues I did learn never trust a woman’s directions they mean well but cannot differentiate between left and right…
What a lot of these guys on these sites don't tell you is that most of the Artics are brick trailers with shorter trailers, or cement tankers which are even shorter. Well done 👍
The thing is here in Australia owe roads are wide and the UK roads are much smaller I would find it hard to find a Ozzie to drive your streets I take my hat off to you and all the other UK drivers for what you have to put up with as regards to your roads .I drive a bdoble up the east cost and wouldn't do it good job bloke
As a retired HGV driver with over 40 years experience as a driver, shunter and instructor, I would say it could just be done. Only with a 4 wheel tractor unit though. Right decision.
If the truck won't fit, it won't fit. If you can't straighten up in time the trailer will just go into the scaffolding. It's possible that one got round there earlier, but I'm guessing that the scaffolding wasn't there at the time. They should have just unloaded from the road anyway. I've been to a few of these building sites, and they usually don't like you driving on there unless absolutely necessary
Those roads are claustrophobically narrow! Honestly, I don't even think it's suitable for a caravan, let alone an HGV! This is a clear example of the difference in the lane widths between American roads and the UK! Yowsers! I was puckering through that whole ride! LOL!!
I doubt very much that any construction worker there is a HGV driver, and at the end of the day it's your call and not theirs. I worked at Pilkingtons and one of my early roles there was FLT, Bray shovel driver etc. We would fill up the large refuge containers, and then when full they would be picked up by a wagon. A few would burn out their winching tackle trying to lift the full containers onto their wagons, and my manager had to sort them out. I wasn't trained to be an external wagon driver, so wasn't aware of the wagon loads or legal road stuff. The good drivers just knew their weights and what was bad. They would wave you over and say there is too much stuff in there and can you take some out, and so we would. You couldn't go off the fill line, as it was a mixture of wood, steel, sand and general waste. I would rather have a driver know their stuff, what they can do and can't. I would have also thought (I could be wrong) that when signing up or contracting the delivery they have agreed to delivery conditions. Otherwise, I could order 10,000 bricks dropped off at my house in a single one-way street and want you to drop them off in my back garden with a ten-foot garden wall around it.
One of those days when everything conspired against you. When you were reversing down the lane at 12:05, how did you know there wasn't a car behind you?
Had a near miss on Saturday, bastard SatNav started taking me down a street only for me to realise is was fenced off at the end of the street, had to reverse/crawl my way out, God knows how I did it, only passed last month 😱😱
It all depends on if its reasonable for you to say no, i didn't refuse the load i just refused to reverse into somwhere that wasn't safe in my opinion. If you think its not doable send pictures and explain your reasons why and im sure most places will be fine.
Off topic. But i have the same satnav. Do you know how or if there are any places for updates. The link i had from my supplier said they ceased operation during lockdown
I mean you gave that a pretty damn good go tbf if you couldn't get round you couldn't get round, simple as. Even if other people had gone round there their vehicle might have been slightly different. I bet they've probably had class 2s down there so they think it's fine for a class 1
The site had a telehandler so why take the risk or waste time just for a few yards? I think it could have been done but the risk was too high it was quicker to tip you from the road anyway.
The thing is with the "pro drivers" they can always do it. Cars parked on your side didn't help. Neither did the fact you had a lift axle unit. Up or down there are harder to take the swing off in tight situations. Regardless of the above. It was tight. I've turned up places and had the same spill. Explain, argue if needed. Or offer them the keys to do it themselves. They soon shut up. I've been driving class 1 for 20 years and if I'm not comfortable. I don't do it. Regardless of what the next big head says.
It is never worth the risk, I hate it when people who have never even driven a double axle truck get pissed because you shut them down, even worse older trucker that say they could’ve managed it, that might be the case but I’m here to make a stable living, not to show off, I love this job and if I have to risk my income because of a couple of stupid decisions instead of doing it in a safer, even if it takes more time to do as in this case, than to risk my livelihood, trust me companies would rather you refuse certain spots a couple of times than you damaging the trailer a couple of times, not worth it.
Well done, assess the situation, give it a good try but know when it's not going to happen. Good professional attitude, no swearing, ranting or raving, makes a change to see a positive image of the industry.

Bro respect. I have been watching several narrow road videos over the last few days - and this! This is the worst. Phew!!
Haha, thanks it was fun for sure 😄
Well done, mate. When you reversed back on the tight road, I thought my heart will stop.
Fair play to you mate that was tough. I was out on my first run this weekend as a new pass and I have a new found respect for HGV drivers...its hard work driving something that big...
It does get easier mate
