Nalgene has made the HDPE bottles since the 70's, so they aren't new. They made them before they even made the polycarbonate (clear, heavier) bottles. Nowadays the clear bottles are made with Tritan plastic because it doesn't contain BPA like polycarbonate.

2 ounces more water you can carry. I won't be running to find one. Thank your for the comparison, Threads. Stay safe and stay warm

I'm going to give it a shot to replace my molded Smart Water bottles for backpacking. I want to try it for colder weather. I'm a bit worried it'll flex too much if I put boiling hot water but hope warm water won't be an issue and help dry wet socks. I'm just tired of Smart Water bottles tipping over or rolling down a hill haha.

I think i would go with the clear bottle any day. But interesting couple oz difference. Thank you😎👌

I really appreciate this video. Nalgene used to be the Gold Standard in water bottles for hiking/backpacking. But, with the ultralight wave of the past 10-15 years, they've gone by the wayside for SmartWater bottles that weight mere grams. Still, there could be even more reasons to bring back the Nalgene (polycarbonate) and NOT even the lighter weight (High Density Polyethelene) ones (which I started with back in 1998). I plan to create a video on the topic in the near future. Stay tuned.... ☮❤🤝

I really like my Nalgenes and HydroFlasks. I am not a gram counter by any means however I am taking lessons from that crowd in some aspects. Thank you for watching and your insight. Take care!

I applaud the company's marketing department for rebranding polyethylene as the new hot technology :) Cause that's how they started a couple of decades ago, by making polyethylene bottles, test tubes and similar laboratory equipment. I'd bet money that those flexible water containers / bladders from other companies are polyethylene foil too. So the difference is just in the mechanical robustness and the form factor.

Haha....seriously. I was looking at these cause I wanna stop using single smart water bottles on my backpacking trips (less waste) and thought, "I had a nalgene that looked like that." They are just rebranding the old ones as ultralight haha😅

Nalgene ultralight is HDPE. It won't take as high a heat so you can't use it as effectively as a Hot water bottle. Normal Nalgene Tritan is safer and takes heat better.
Titanium water bottles have got cheaper. All the advantages of stainless steel for a smidge more weight than an ultralight Nalgene.
I carry one Titanium bottle daily but I also take it camping as I can use it as a hot water bottle( cover with socks), to help dry socks/shoes and I'll happily drink the water once it's cooled. My 700ml keith titanium bottle weighs 112g

Nalgene (Tritan TM) 1L is about 177.25 grams of weight. Equivalent titanium bottles at 1L weight around 237-280 grams. So no not even a closer alternative for ultralight. Perhaps a 800ml titanium bottle (i.e: Silver Ant) at 166grams is a closer option. Is a tradeoff, taking advantage of titanium (resistance, boiling water) but losing a 20% of carrying water capacity.

Not sure if I’m missing something…. You held them up to the camera at about 4:16 into the video and said they are both 32oz, but the measure on the ultralight only says 30oz (900ml)? Maybe they only printed a scale that high because there isn’t room on the smaller bottle?

    • @AtwoodThreads
      @AtwoodThreads  Год назад

      I didn’t even notice. Lol
They are listed as 32’s just like the others but it does stop on 30 on them. 🤷‍♂️
I am gonna look into it more now.

I didn’t realize the difference was that much. I’m not giving up my Nalgene bottles for the weight difference though.

Agreed. I bought one to see and check it out but will be sticking with the OG’s.

Im a cheap son of the beach and just cant justify the price for a nalgene and I seldom see them in thrift stores. Of course I dont hike very much if at all and any walks I go on a small aluminum water bottle is more than enough, and THOSE I can usually get for a buck or 2 at thrift stores. And of course recycled 1 and 2liter bottles are all over

Can the ultralight handle boiling water ? As in from stove directly to the bottle . One thing I noticed is the importance to be able to boil water and free up the pot for more water . Essentially boil water transfer to its appropriate conveyance directly without a long wait time for water to cool . Thank you

@@frogturtle I am trying to figure out a way to test this where if there is no obvious signs of damage I can still know if it broke down the plastic. I think I will use a TDS meter before and after to see if anything is released into the water.
