He said these things joking on how horrible nazis are contrasting the dog's cuteness. He clearly didn't mean to promote antisemitism and clearly didn't. What's worrying isn't what he said to a fucking PUG (for fuck's sake), but the fact that this goes to court. When someone's calling a dog moving its' paw a hate crime, it's really downgrading the seriousness of actual hate crimes and racism that occur every day.

What I mean is that personally I think that there's a HUGE difference between saying dumb shit (that don't reflect your ideology at all) to a dog and actually being a racist, antisemite, a person who mistreats other people and is causing harm through his actions. These two things should not be equated.

I was raised Jewish, grew up most of my life in Israel where they have an annual day of remembrance for the holocaust. Saw many survivors speak and share their stories. All of that is not including everything taught in school just as part as normal curriculum.
There is nothing I hate more than nazis, what they did was absolutely despicable.
So that being said I would like to say that the Scottish dude is in the clear in my opinion. Saying that he is a nazi, is taking away from what a nazi is. Nazis are cruel murderers, this guy has a dark sense of humor.
Some might find it distasteful but I personally thought it was funny.
In my opinion lumping this dude into the same category as some who kill another / experiment on another/ torture another etc due to the fact he was different, is a very dangerous road to go down. Let the antisemitics / racists / homophobics etc shine in their own light so we know who to avoid. Don't get that group all mixed up with normal people.

Huge difference between a joke and actually hating a group of people for their race, religion, sexual orientation, and etc. Society is becoming a bit PC.

Jew here. Doesn't matter if he was joking or serious (even though he was clearly joking). Jailing someone for speech that doesn't directly and demonstrably incite violence (creating imminent danger) should be viewed as barbaric in any 1st would country. It's disgusting that this guy has to deal with the possibility of prison time. Even if he was a real Nazi, this would be ridiculous and evil. if a person is ignorant enough to believe Nazi nonsense, you need to teach him otherwise. Suppression of hate speech doesn't do anything to deligimize it.

German who had Jewish family in Germany during WW2 here and I'm kind of torn here.
I think this case is pretty clear, it was a joke, etc. and I find it awful to think, that he might serve a prison sentence for this, but I'm not sure if the limit should be "direct incitement of violence".
In Germany the NSDAP (narzi party) is outlawed as an illegal undemocratic group and therefore nobody is allowed to promote them, as that would be "promoting something illegal". This is the law which outlaws the swastica in Germany, even though it doesn't mention the swastica.
You still can show the swastica for example crossed out as an anti-nazi sign or in movies, school, art, etc. in a historical context, but not as to promote it.
This isn't a direct incitement of violence, but I can see it making sense.

Right as a fellow Scot, this is some fuckin bullshit. Most won't know, but as a people, we take the utter piss out of anything and everything - including ourselves. Savagely. To try and curb that is racist to us, some could say lol
What about mainstream comedians? Check out Frankie Boyle - been aired on big mainstream TV shows (live at the Apollo etc), comedy satire panel shows, has had massive DVD sales, live tours - and I garuantee you he has said worse than this dude. Also a Scot lol
Poor taste? Yeah, for sure. Does that mean this guy should be criminalised and potentially jailed though? Utter bollocks.
See if these outrage seekers and authorities would concentrate their efforts on seeking out the people who preach genuine hate and harm to other groups, rather than going for easy visible (but ultimately innocent) individuals for nothing more than gags of poor taste, the world would maybe get somewhere. But hey, there are political brownie points to be had...

He even says in the video "My girlfriend thinks her dog is really cute, so I'm going to turn it into the least cute thing I can think of, which is a Nazi" which means that it's clearly a joke. Also, what would make Adolf Hitler happier were he alive today, knowing that people still feared the Nazis after the Nazi Party disbanded in 1945 or seeing people make jokes about the Nazis because we see their ideology as so ass-backward and ridiculous? I assume the latter. That being said, I don't really take offense to anything anymore, even if people are truly being antisemetic, racist, homophobic, ect because I find their opinions so ass-backwards and ridiculous that I cannot help laughing. I have Jewish family.
The way I see it: When it comes to comedy, to quote Carlin, either it's all okay or none of it's okay (I might be getting the exact phrase slightly off but it's what he said). There's a time and a place for everything sure; I should hope you wouldn't make these types of jokes in a synagogue, but outside of that? If I can't joke about Nazism, can I not joke about race? If I can't make black/asian/white people jokes, can I then not joke about sex/gender too? Once you start censoring one you have to censor it all. Now there are places for everything-- I would hope you wouldn't go to your local gaming forum and said the N word especially with a hard R, but as far as being out in the open/a place like RUclips? I dont see the problem.
This should not be an issue (Nazi an issue?)

    CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS:
To whom do you award the right to decide which speech is harmful or who is the harmful speaker? Or determine in advance what are the harmful consequences going to be, that we know enough about in advance to prevent? To whom would you give this job? To whom are you going to award the job of being the censor? Isn’t it a famous old story that the man who has to read all the pornography, in order to decide what’s fit to be passed and what’s fit not to be, is the man most likely to be debauched?
Did you hear any speaker, the opposition to this motion - eloquent as… one of them was - to whom you would delegate the task of deciding for you what you could read? To whom you would give the job of deciding for you, relieve you of the responsibility of hearing what you might have to hear?
Do you know anyone - hands up - do you know anyone to whom you’d give this job? Does anyone have a nominee? You mean there’s no one in Canada good enough to decide what I can read? Or hear? I had no idea. But there’s a law that says there must be such a person. Or there’s a subsection of some piddling law that says it. Well, the hell with that law then. It’s inviting you to be liars and hypocrites and to deny what you evidently know already.
About the censorious instinct we basically know all that we need to know, and we’ve known it for a long time. It comes from an old story about another great Englishman - sorry to sound so particular about that this evening - Dr. Samuel Johnson, the great lexicographer, compiler of the first dictionary of the English language.
When it was complete, Dr. Johnson was waited upon by various delegations of people to congratulate him, of the nobility, of the quality, of the Commons, of the Lords - and also by a delegation of respectable ladies of London, who tended on him at his Fleet Street lodgings, and congratulated him.
“Dr. Johnson,” they said, “we are delighted to find that you have not included any indecent or obscene words in your dictionary.”
“Ladies,” said Dr. Johnson, “I congratulate you on being able to look them up.”

That Scottish guy should be in no trouble whatsoever or recieve any punishment except for other peoples critisism of him, expressed with their WORDS. This is very disturbing to me. FREEDOM OF SPEECH is SO VALUABLE. This is insane. He didn't hurt anybody or tell anyone to hurt anybody. We need to fight for him and his freedom of speech. If this becomes a "big story" and the media tries to paint it as "acceptable" it can change everything negativily. What makes this scary is that its a guy talking about nazis, and not alot of people are gonna jump to protect his freedom of speech, because they are scared to be seen as nazi, even though WHAT hes talking about doesnt matter. This is a power play by the enemy of freedom of speech, and it is a very smart one. We MUST do something. We MUST Be smarter. I think there is a reason why Phil did not share his opinion. He wants to see if we are smart. People are either gonna debate about the nazi stuff, or be smart and debate about the real story, freedom of speech.

There's an issue where laws have been passed "for the good of the people" protecting muh feelings, because most politicians won't be caught dead defending the right to express vulgarity online.

Jesse Michael not only did the UK media slander him to try and turn the public against him but they actually sent people to talk to his neighbors and tried to convince them that he was a Nazi, fortunately his neighbors just told them to fuck off. Also he mentioned in his recent video that the court might accept character references from Scottish Jews so if anyone knows any Jews living in Scotland maybe see if they can help.

The UK and the rest of the EU does not recognize an equivalent right of it's citizens.... for that matter, neither does Canada. No line was crossed. In fact I believe that if one is truly joking, nothing is off limits, ever. If YOU are offended, that does not make it objectively offensive, and it DEFINITELY does not make it malicious. Make jokes about anything and everything as much as you can. No word is a "Voldemort", if you will. The words only hold as much power as you give them.

The way this whole movement of people telling other people that "this is wrong and thou shall be punished for it" is freakishly heading towards a similar outline to the universe of '1984'! People really just need to fucking calm down and stop being so fucking serious about everything. Comedians warn other comedians not to perform at schools and universities because the tight-arse people at them get so damn up-tight about a joke about race. It's a joke; it's okay to laugh at it, there's nothing wrong with a sense of humour, even if it may be a darker sense of humour than what you prefer, it's still just humour, nothing more.

The fact that Americans were assaulted for protesting on their own land, and nothing is done in response to the attackers, is weak. Even a denouncement of the security guard's actions would be better than nothing if diplomatic immunity prevents direct action. But Trump has aligned himself with Erdogan, and everyone else is too spineless to stand up for your citizens.
EDIT: I don't think there has yet been time for a proper response that stands up for the assaulted. I hope there will be one. John McCain (you know, the ex-serviceman US senator Trump doesn't like for being captured while fighting for your country) has spoken against it.

I really disprove in the idea of throwing somebody in prison for making Nazi jokes. We're talking about jokes, not threats. Especially when people making Nazi jokes is one of the things actually Nazis hate. They hate the idea of getting made fun of, and taking the thought of gasing the Jews lightly. Thinking they're the all mighty, and making them sound like harmless idiots. When I watched his video of show casing what he taught his girlfriend dog was utterly one of the funniest things when it came to shock value. I never thought he, nor the dog would harm anybody, especially a Jewish person. People just need to see jokes, as jokes.

But like my first sentence, it's relative. To you, this particular video is not funny, however, to others it could be. If someone can be jailed for this, you might as well arrest every Trey Parker & Matt Stone, every comedian, hell every person.

The first case seems to be about the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities/Scottish Police caring more about sending a message than about doing that which is morally right. To send a man to jail/gaol (Scottish) when he had no harmful intentions, had no victim and caused no harm is just malicious and venomous.
Will sending Marcus to jail/gaol make Scotland a better place (temporarily or otherwise)? No.
Will sending Marcus to jail/gaol make Marcus a better person? No.
There is no reason for Marcus to spend time in prison.

@love lea I left the Northern Hemisphere about 20 years ago (as a toddler) so I'm not familiar with "recent" changes of language in Scotland. I knew that "gaol" was a dying word (in Scotland) hence "jail" featuring first, I didn't know that the word was completely dead. No loss, I prefer jail anyway.... As long as the "r" continues to be before the "e" in words like "centre," (in Britain) I'll have no linguistic complaints.
As a petty, useless sidenote (from myself), "jail" and "gaol" are pronounced exactly the same so technically people can unintentionally say the dead word.

In my opinion, offensive speech should not be criminalized (except for death threats, but those fall in a category of their own obviously). Its the public that poke fun and think he looks funny for wearing crop tops etc and the government doesnt like people making fun of him. The Kings seems like a funny guy doing as he pleases, people are just haters. Not saying the government is right for censoring people but they need to get lives and let the King wear his glorious crop tops.

He's not being antisemitic when he's saying "I wanted to turn the pug into the ugliest thing that I can think of." He's clearly not condoning Nazi ideology. The joke was in poor taste, but it was just that... a joke. Should people joke about it? I guess that's up to them. I don't think it's funny to joke about, but I don't think a lot of sensitive topics are funny when joked about. At the same time, people should be able to say what they want, within reason. Telling someone to kill themselves is obviously not okay, but sensitive topics can be joked about.
As for showing Nazi symbolism and all that, it's important. Nazis are a huge part of WORLD history, and censoring all of that wouldn't do anything except pretty much ensure that it happens again. The swastika is a religious symbol that the Nazis adopted it into their ideology. According to the US Holocaust museum it's still widely seen in countries where it's used as a religious symbol, having nothing to do with Nazi ideology. If you censor talking about the Nazis, then you're essentially preventing any further discussion about World War 2, and erasing it from history. History shouldn't be erased, it should be discussed and learned from.

I think its funny. A pug nazi, that makes me laugh. I don't think it makes him an anti-semite, I also don't think that one can diminish someones feelings to be offended - that is their right. But to take it past offense into actual offense against the law territory feels excessive and misguided as there are genuine examples of nazism and spreading neo-nazi ideals that require more anger. I dunno, all in all I just find it funny and can't preach ridiculous rhetoric like "Dont get offended check yourself" and just dismiss feelings, but my feeling is that I saw it and I thought it was funny and that was it. Love to hear some other thoughts though and am open to debate and change!

I'm Jewish. I showed this to my mom when it first came out and we both thought it was hilarious and adorable. Sure the Holocaust was horrible, but it still needs to be made fun of just like anything else that is horrible in order for people to heal from it. Majority of the Left now seems to have forgotten the humor heals all. Leaving or making something taboo only keeps the wound fresh and open. That being said, he failed in his mission to make that pug less cute.... Just sayin

    • @jnmmcgraw
      @jnmmcgraw 7 лет назад +4

Yeah. I agree. My family is Japanese-American and well - for those who didn't read the small paragraph in their history book in high school covering WWII - went through the Diet, Off-Brand, Concentration Camps during WWII. Only, you know, instead of killing the Japanese-Americans on American soil, they trusted the Germans should do it since they had more expertise on the art of genocide. Imagine how baffled America was when they got reports of over 200% casualty rate, and the Japanese-Americans still came home from a suicide mission as the most decorated unit... Oops....
Moral of the story. Frowning on and making something taboo only weakens people to take a role of being more helpless. The strong make it through rough times, share the story so it's not forgotten, and teach others to be strong as well (ideally). If you can't laugh about something, then you can't move on. You can even roll your eyes or shake your head, but it still proves you acknowledge the idea behind it and have healed. You hit it spot on, people are forgetting this.

so called 'hate speech' can only occur when a word, phrase or idea is given an incredible amount of power by the general public.
If part of the fight against racism and bigotry is to eliminate the power that words and phrases hold over peoples emotions, how in any way is it going to help "fight hate speech" to criminalise comedy (whether or not you like the humour) how will it 'help to fight bigotry' to simply give a bunch of sounds that are assembled in a sequence an actual life CRIMINAL connotation, this is the most disgusting use of anti free speech propaganda ive witnessed in recent times as a UK citizen, if he is criminally charged then the judge who passes the sentence should be ashamed of themself, he will lose all rights to work outsise of owning his own company, think about that, you personally could lose your rights for telling a joke, sickening.
