  • Spaceballs was such a great time. I enjoyed this more than Robin Hood Men in Tights but not as much as Blazing Saddles. This was another solid Mel Brooks movie that had me laughing throughout the ninety-minute runtime. The absurd humor combined with very decent performances from John Candy, Rick Moranis and the man himself, Mel Brooks really brought this crazy script to life. The production end and the score were also surprisingly good, something that I didn’t expect. This is the quintessential Star Wars parody and I highly recommend it. If it isn’t considered a cult film today, it will be in the future.

George Lucas gave Mel Brooks permission to spoof his characters and even gave him access to his special effects studio ILM (industrial light and magic)
Under the one condition that Brooks was NOT allowed to make merchandise based on spaceballs. Which is why we have so many merchandising jokes in the movie.
George Lucas saw the film and claimed that he thought he was gonna break something he was laughing so hard. He even commended Brooks saying that even if the film wasn’t a parody, the story would have held on its own as a classic space fantasy!

"We're not just doing this for money. We're doing it for a SHIT LOAD of money!"
    That's a good enough reason in this sci-fi comedy classic. 😎 👍
Fun Fact: The scene in which Dark Helmet is playing with his dolls was not in the screenplay. Writer, producer, and director Mel Brooks came up with the idea on the set one day and told this to Rick Moranis, who then improvised the entire scene.
Location Location Fact: The castle on the planet Druidia is King Ludwig II's Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. It has been modified by matte painting with additional ramps. Neuschwanstein Castle has been featured in many motion pictures, and it is the original inspiration for all Disney theme park castles.
Wookieepedia Connection Fact: The Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars saga makes a cameo appearance in this movie. Take a close look at the exterior shot of the Space Diner, and it can be spotted parked there among the other space vehicles. George Lucas got a chance to read the screenplay before production began, and loved it so much that he decided to have his special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, help make this movie.

Mel Brooks said that he was willing to make a Spaceballs 2 ONLY IF Rick Moranis returned as Dark Helmet, but right now Brooks is busy producing a sequel TV-show to his movie History of the World, part 1 (which you should react to and his original 60's movie of The Producers =)

One of my first childhood memories and my first film memory is seeing this film in the theatre opening weekend on a Saturday. 4-years old. I think I came online during the hair dryer in the desert scene. I've had some loud and raucous moviegoing experiences but this one is at the top. I heard people laugh in a way that I had never heard before.

Yes, Mel brooks played dual roles in Spaceballs, President Skroob and Yogurt
He also did this in " Blazing Saddles", in Bart's flashback scene, Mel Brooks played the Indian Chief

One of the guys combing the desert was famed voice actor Rob Paulsen (just to name a few examples among the many hundreds of roles he has done, 1987 TMNT Raphael, 2012 TMNT Donatello, Yakko Warner and Pinky from _Animaniacs,_ Carl Wheezer from _Jimmy Neutron)._ He’s also among the voices for the Dinks. Rob was around during some of the joke writing sessions, and pitched Mel an idea to name the leader of the Dinks ‘Gunga Dink’. Unfortunately, while he did admit it was witty, he turned it down, telling Rob “Sorry, kid, but wit is shit, funny is money.” I think Mel should have gone with it.

They tried to get a sequel off the ground for years. At one point, there was a sequel being written called "Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2" which would have been awesome! In the end, a cartoon series came out to follow-up the movie that only ran for about a dozen episodes.

There are two Mel Brooks movies that are absolutely necessary to watch at some point,;one is "High Anxiety," a brilliant homage to Hitchcock thrillers, and "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," which is a great parody of "Bram Stoker's Dracula."

Lucas allowed Mel Brooks to make a parody on Star Wars and even gave him the opportunity to use ILM (it's why the effects look really quite solid) as long as they didn't make any merch for the movie. It's why they made a joke in the movie about the merch.
Lucas was really smart in that aspect when it came to Star Wars, banking completely on how profitable the merch would be for his series.

A dark horse among Mel Brooks movies is _To Be or Not to Be_ , a loving remake of Ernst Lubitsch's anti-Nazi comedy from the early 1940s, which Brooks produced but didn't direct. Brooks and his wife Anne Bancroft take on the Jack Benny and Carole Lombard roles; the humor is restrained for Brooks but perhaps broader than the original. A lot of people saw no need for a new take on a classic original, but I find it enjoyable in its own right, especially Bancroft's performance.

Great reaction as always. I've been a fan of Brooks since before I was old enough to get most of the jokes. lol This was definitely a good one. I like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein a little better and I have a strong nostalgic fondness for History of the World Part 1, but objectively, this is one of his better made comedies and it is undeniably hilarious.
A classic sci fi reference that a lot of people (especially younger reactors) miss in Spaceballs is to Flash Gordon(1981). Dark Helmet's Schwartz ring looks exactly like that of Ming the Merciless which also had a host of mysterious, non specific powers including, but limited to shooting beams, manipulating physical objects, and mind control.
I cannot recommend watching Flash Gordon enthusiastically enough. It's creative, colorful, campy, exciting, and the soundtrack was composed and performed by Queen. A seriously fun flick unlike any other.

First, other movies to watch. These two aren't Brooks, but they're in the same genre and far too awesome for you to miss. Airplane and Top Secret. If you haven't seen, I can highly recommend. I think you've seen almost everything _good_ that Brooks ever did.
Now... a few things that might help (some of which has been mentioned by others, but I'm trying to be complete):
George Lucas okayed this movie on the condition there be no merchandising... which is the origins of all those jokes.
Lucas _also_ gave Brooks access to ILM who did the special effects for Star Wars, which is why _some_ of the special effects are so good for that time.
You skipped the part just before Dark Helmet hits the camera where he comments that only one man would dare give him the raspberry, and I'm not sure if you just thought it wasn't funny, or if you missed the joke there (more commonly referred to as 'blowing a raspberry' today).
You clearly got the KFC joke.
Yes, that _was_ a reference to the Wizard of Oz and meeting the wizard, right along with one of their number trying to run for it, and the small people from the Wizard of Oz were the _Munchkins,_ not the Oompa Loompas (that's from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).
The Dinks were likely a reference to the Jawas from the first movie (which was 'episode 4', for some reason, hence why this is episode 11, and I like the notion I just read here that it may be a reference to bankruptcy as well).
'Schwartz' was the name of Mel Brooks' lawyer when the film was made, so never underestimate the power of the Schwartz.
'The Search for More Money' may be poking at 'The Search for Spock', which came out three years earlier.
The doll scene was ad-libed by Moranis on a whim by Brooks. Also not intended, when the door crashed onto Dark Helmet, they just went with it and kept the scene because it was awesome.
The Millennium Falcon is visible on the far right of the establishing shot for the diner at the end.
I think you likely got all the jokes about the names, buuut... just in case... 'Vespa' is the name of a high-pitched, whiny scooter with no power, 'Valium' is the name of a drug that makes people sleepy but also helps with depression, 'Dot Matrix' is a type of printer (mostly these days seen as making printouts for cashiers).
I think that covers everything you didn't show or comment on or that you asked about that wasn't answered for you. You actually caught more of it than I've seen from several others.
