I definitely think it's a combination of the adhesive they use and how you're putting them on and off. That said at $350 Oakley should have tested the crap outta them to ensure they can stand up to any sort of use by its customers.
I’ve had my Kato’s since May. Use them daily… no issues. Just looked at them closely and they’re virtually the same as when I received them. Wonder if the newer versions have a different Manufacturing process? (btw, loved them in the spring, helped my allergies a lot vs all others I have… Jawbreaker, etc..)
I got the same problem I did see a one star review on Oakley website about how this happens I bought them anyways and tried to be careful with them… only lasted me maybe three months Oakley didn’t even offer me a replacement pare only an exchange. I just fixed them to day and plan on keeping them. I love the kato’s

On my second return as well, gutted they only have a 60 day refund window as that would be the easy way out. Unless the design changes for me I will continue using them and sending them back every month or so until the warrenty runs out
My Kato X broke after about 20 uses after 11 month of owning the pair. I always use two hands to put them on. I live in California, submitted through Oakley warranty site with 3 photos. Someone emailed me back and said that is not MFG defect, the best they can offer me is 30% off promo code. $300 down the drain... What do you think I should do?
I had the same problem. I bought my Kato 3 weeks ago and the same issue happened to me mid ride whilst it was raining. The arm popped right off and it was only my 2nd time wearing them
Ended up in the same situation as you. I never even stretched mine though, I don,t take them off during rides or put them in my helmet as it makes the helmet uncomfy for me with the lens arms on. Just went through the returns process which was pretty good. However now super worried about them breaking on me again (if they do I think I will just do the same as you and take the £250 loss and glue them properly). My second pair already seem a little detached on one side. the glue doesnt seem to have gone all the way along the lens attachment area, so I can slide some paper under it, I imagine this is where the initial weakpoint starts and then continuously putting them on each day with the slight stretch to get over my temples eventually the glue fails. Also odd that I wasnt even putting my oakleys on when they broke, they kinda just fell apart, maybe they got slighty crushed i the case during travel. But they were in the protective case and the force wouldve been in the wrong direction. Intetested to hear your thoughts and how the glue hack has worked.
Same thing happened to my Kato just the other day while in the middle of the ride. I live in Abu Dhabi, UAE and it's not even summer yet. I believe that the glue that holds the arm and lens aren't built that good especially for a well reputable company with its price tag. I called the Oakley store here where I got it from but they don't have a record of my purchase on their system as they recently moved to a new store (I lost the receipt as I have to move apartment twice in less than a year). Also, living in a country where customer service is pretty bad doesn't help (especially for getting warranty replacement or repair from an international brand). Im hoping that Oakley store here will put an effort to look for my purchase of records from their head office as the salesman said its possible to do that BUT they are not sure how is the process and how long it'll take as they never done that before. I ordered a new sunglasses from a brand called SunGod last the other night as they offer lifetime warranty. I have a friend who have their sunglasses (Vulcan) and they replaced it without any hesitation when it broke from a crash/accident. I really admire brands who takes care of their customer. Im still going to try to resolve and get my warranty from Oakley here as its still under the 2 year warranty. Good luck to everyone facing the sme issue. Its a really cool sunglasses but its a shame that it wont survive for a long time because of the poor durability of the product.
Oh! Thank you! Now I understand why you all people broke this glasses! Even simple glasses you should put off with two hands! it's just golden rule. Kato is very gentle glasses yet. And I glad that my Kato and all my glasses still like new. i always uses two hands for put it on or put it off my glasses.
Even if you gently use two hands as I did, you will get them broken sooner or later... They unfortunately designed it wrong. It feels like I bought a prototype.
It’s a major design flaw, they should have made two holes were the side click in. This would make them more robust that just a little tab of glue. They went with FORM over FUNCTION instead of the other way around
Just now my oakley retailer said new updated oakley kato got slimmer rubber lens. But i will never go back to oakley products, now im on 100% sunglass more better value than oakley

I brought the 2022 Tour De France edition back in Aug. I had the same problem, returned them and within 2 rides the arm came off on the second pair. After watching this I agree this seems to be some sort of defect. With the money spent and hassle of returning the 1st pair i'm not excited to have to do this again.
Well, I just got a pair of Oakley Kato yesterday and, of course, they were not cheap. I always try to handle my Oakleys as delicate as possible, but, after watching your video, I will keep an eye on my Kato from now. Thank you for explaining this issue. Regards from Mexico
I love these glasses, I had 5 pairs of kato and 3 of enconder, I had to return all of the kato and put them under warranty, I think that they were not tested too many before going on sale, from what I see it is a common fault which is repeated, the place where I bought them recognized the guarantee but I asked to change for another model, I was half disappointed with the experience.
I’ve been an Oakley wearer since 1992! But I think I’ll pass on the kato, I would buy the old ones if they rereleased. Razor blades are sweet and I wish I still had my old ones ☹️

I love oakley (I own 8 pairs) but when i tried these on in store I was skeptical about their longterm durability. That minimalistic design is at the cost of rigidity and durability. I don't really like suggesting fakes but there is a company called kapvoe that makes a similar looking style and bunch of other cycling glasses. Find em on Amazon! I'm glad you were honest about your use, working for sunglass hut i can tell you the way you put those glasses on isn't the proper way, always put on/take off glasses in a symmetrical manner, so as not to wear or stretch out the frame. If you are into one handed use pulling off from the nose and brow is an easy way to take them off that wouldnt stretch the arms, and you can try putting them on the same way, just wiggle your head into it but dont replicate that movement you were previously doing! These frames would be non adjustable and because oakley likes to use thermoplastics they don't like being heated up either. Great review! 👍
I have had mine for 2 year so warranty is not possible if it happens now. I'm not a gorilla with my glass cause they expensive. You your right Oakley has done this In the pass, my XX Metal 24k has a defect in them that didn't show up . They are in great shape and was litely used so when I wanted to use then the rubber had rooted to the point that it was wobbly and they can't even repair it. So I guess that better enjoy while I can cause tomorrow they die!
They are defective I have the blue ones the yellow ones the red ones and they all came apart send it to Oakley website took pictures and I came back saying that there were not warranty which is unacceptable with a brand that is well known. It appears they’re not backing up on their product.
You're paying $350 for the Oakley name for one and that's expected. Also for the lenses and the clarity that you love. Also the new ability to adjust the rake is another factor in price. It's about everything that went into the glasses that makes them expensive..It basically a mold of your face. A high price tag doesn't mean you can handle them HOWEVER and expect them to be indestructible. You're not gonna wear a Rolex while handling heavy equipment. You'll take it off or wear something more expendable.
Super glad I went with Jawbreakers as I wanted the Katos and gave up looking for them. Jawbreaker's work great and with the frame can just put them down anywhere.
Jawbreakers are great the only watch out is that the metal clip, that locks onto the frame is a powder coated metal. If the coating gets scratched, it exposes the metal and due to the action of sweat, the clip will corrode. Oakley don’t replace the clip so you’ll have to claim warranty or buy a new set.
I go nice and easy on them and they did break as well . Trust me i will claim the warranty till i die ... next time ill ask them if they can screw it together
Yep if you want it bad enough, I got a high demand Canyon no problem, just checked the website all day everyday until it said available then bought immediately had the bike in 3 days. Did the same with a YT MTB. 🤙
You need to pull them apart to put them on your face though, any sunglasses you need to do that. It may not be a defect but the location of the arm joint is too susceptible to forces against the glue.
Got mine and broke after using 3rd time. As an industrial product designer, these are designed wrong. Maison Martin Margiela designed similar glasses years ago... They were way better.
Has to be a defect. I am sure you are not the only rider out there that is stressing the arms like that. They should be built better. Maybe they need to use Gorilla glue or something like that. Or do more effort of scuffing the adhesion point as the smoothness of that part makes for a not-so-strong connection. I have the Jawbreakers and no issues. And I love the Karoo jersey you are wearing.
instead of using adhesive they should've used a small bolt. Any adhesive is going to wear off from constant heat unless you only ride in cool weathers. Pretty poorly designed.
350 bucks? Defect - we should expect more. Side note - My helmet doesn’t allow for my S2s to sit on them. I’ve come to really like wearing my glasses under my helmet on the back of my head when they’re off… 🤷🏼♂️
