@@Big1_ I wouldn't say that but it does hold a place in my heart especially when roller blading as a kid humming these tunes to myself for motivation 💯
Holy shit, this sounds almost like MP3 audio. I know the Genesis is capable of some awesome sounds, but man this sounds more advanced than anything else I've heard on the YM2612. EA really blew it out of the ballpark here.
+Gender Neutral Chibi Thing It's very clever use of PCM. Some like it, some don't--I think it's exactly the kind of cleverness you wouldn't see in a Japanese game, so I like it.
DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL I had to look up Beavis and Butthead on the Genesis earlier. While it's not nearly as impressive as this, the PCM usage is very similar to this game's. I'm surprised it's not another Electronic Arts game.
+Gender Neutral Chibi Thing Once upon a time, before EA became a soulless corporation and the video game publishing equivalent of an animal rendering plant, they seemed to employ talented people who produced quality work and seemed to really care about what they were making. It's the only thing that explains why they bothered to craft such a unique sound driver instead of just shipping something with GEMS just to get it out the door. Skitchin' has more original and fun gameplay in 10 minutes than a year's worth of modern day EA titles...
DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL Sadly, that's the direction most video game companies are heading. It's why the bigger companies continue to fail while independent developers (usually lead by workers that formerly worked in these big companies) accumulate more success with their creative ideas.
cheese grater still #1 imo not by much but something really clicks with this tone and the beats and layers at that pace. Wonder if anyone has info on the writers/creators behind this?
Dont feel like going through all the songs right now to find which one it is but. They used the opening riffs of one of the Accused songs called - Inheret the earth. I think they might have even used one of suicidal tendencies riffs
Sounds like there's two simultaneous PCM channels going on there, and the sample quality is really impressive. These guys worked some magic with the Gen's sound chip. Impressive.
+EvilTelephone There are, and it boggles my mind to think about how much work it probably took to keep the sample pitch constant enough to be used musically--plus the driver is capable of pitch bend??, listen to the end bit of the last track, wow
The samples are very clean, so most likely the FM and PSG parts are handled with a 68000 driver, while the Z80 is responsible for software-mixing the PCM channels - uninterrupted, since it has nothing else to do.
***** It should also be possible to have everything sound-related run on the Z80, but it would take more effort to manually insert function calls to the sample-output code from the regular player at timed intervals. Normally, bad quality comes from the FM and PSG engine interrupting the PCM playback which is basically a new byte sent to the DAC channel output every so often.
So the game was universally declared mediocre, sure, but it at least deserves remembering for this soundtrack. Not only does it capture the ‘Attitude’ generation of grunge and skate punk so perfectly, it makes such inspired use of the Mega Drive’s bassy, gravelly sound chip.
If you like this soundtrack, you might want to check out FIFA 95 and other EA Sports titles on the Mega Drive, they have similar sounding tracks. Not as grunge-y though.
Hilarious how 13 year olds were considered "Mature Audiences" back then. I still have the original box art and cartridge. Smog Dog was the best track but they were all good. Thanks for uploading. This will be enjoyed.
It was still great fun on 2 player with this awesome music playing, unfortunately just like Road Rash it suffered from differing gameplay issues on split screen, more noticable in this game... Stunts were almost impossible to do compared to single player and worst of all cars were shared between screens. For example if one player got on a car and was surrounded by 2 or 3 cars in the distance behind or in front. If the player never got off the car a car would NEVER appear again on the screen for the other player making it impossible for the other player to ever catch up...
This soundtrack shreds! Never even knew about this game but I love the titles Electronic Arts produced for the 16 bit machine. All of them are so unique. I'm getting this off ebay right now! Thanks Dell you are the best
+DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL Skitchin was awesome! I loved Road Rash 3 though, my brother and I would knock the cop off his bike and park our bikes on him, constant loop of him screaming, was great!
You & I both. Or I would knock his ass off, then intentionally crash into a wall or something, then perform tai-chi aerobix on his carcass while the various screeching samples looped "Ah!Ee!Oh!Uh!Ou!Agh!Ou!Eh!Ah!Ou!" Beautiful. Fond memories of destroying cop helicopters by landing on them, too. Best performed in Kenya.
oh man oh man 3 years ago i was super mind blown by the quality and still am today. as i said here 3 years ago. THIS. SOUNDS. INCREDIBLE. really wish all western games were creative instead of using gems well gems can get good stuff too but the rules are no lazyness which many users breaked.
@@vuurniacsquarewave5091 for Toy Story they just wrote a driver that made it play amiga MOD files, they also did that for even something as bad as the PC speaker, you can really do whatever as long as you have the CPU cycles to feed the DAC.

Sega Genesis
Skitchin-METAL
Street Of Rage-HOUSE
Comix Zone- GRUNGE
Toejam and Earl-FUNK
+ModPallet Agreed but I think Skitchin is still pretty grunge-y
+DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL Yeah after listening to this a couple of times, there are quite a few songs that have that heavy grunge sound
M.U.S.H.A. , Lightening Force aka Thunder Force IV and Dragons Fury have tunes that resemble metal too
Genesis does
what nintedont
This is legit one of the best soundtracks a Genesis game has ever had, holy shit. Basically a thrash metal album
X10 times better than Trap and Rap.

Streets of Rage 2 has the best sound of any Genesis game for me.
This was my favorite sega genesis game when I was a kid. This soundtrack was so badass. All hail Smog Dog!

the best riffs of that era, along side with Thunder Force IV

Pretty much every song on this is catchy as hell. One of the best game soundtracks of all time
That's a fact.
its actually one guy that made all of this, my friend and i emailed him like 10 years ago cause we were blown away, haha
Bought this game when in came out, I was 12! Kids playing games today will never know how bad ass these games were! And Road Rash!
Yea.
Road rash 2 soundtrack was great as well 🙂

Cheese Grater has been stuck in my head since 94
Wow, this OST is so... 90s! Great use of the FM chip for a Western developer. Also, PSG chip use in a US game, wow.
+greenhillmaniac Really great expressive use of it too. Like the melody in "Smog Dog"
Sure very few western used that full audio potential
Props to the sample-based driver in this.
"YEAH!" Great tunes for driving the interstate!
This game is one of the most 90s things I've ever seen in my life... And I love it. And the music is really cool.
This game's OST just bleeds 90s culture

One of the hardest tracks I've ever heard to this day!!! 🙌🏾
Sounds like Pantera - cowboy from hell album!
oh. my. god. this. sounds. INCREDIBLE!!!
+TAMPUZ and Sega Genesis audio capabilites are awful they said.
they are so wrong!
+TAMPUZ Then you'd like Desert Strike then. It has a much more kick ass soundtrack than the SNES port.
I remember nearly crapping myself when I found out there was a game where you could hang on to cars and punch cops! It was the GTA of it's time!
Best 16-bit soundtrack ever!!!
Hospital is so brutal I love it.
Great soundtrack. Brings back so many good memories. I sometimes listen to it when I’m snowboarding. It’s a good time I feel like I’m in the game.

IMO Caffeine Dream is the best track in the game.
Loved this game too bad 2 player was such low framerate, accidently going though a warp the first time was wierd

Hey Dustin I said I might check this game out since I never got to play it, well I am holding the game in my hands right now!
Loved the grunge soundtrack. Man, RR2 and this had awesome soundtracks. Remember when EA was awesome?!
I didn't know games *could* sound like this on the Genesis. Why did the Aerosmith game (Revolution X) sound so bad?
Great Upload! Its nice to hear this soundtrack on real hardware!
Silken liver slipper..... stuck in my head till this day.... wooow
Does anyone else have fun messing around with the playback speeds loll
I always wished there was a 4 player version of this on N64, 4 player action like with GoldenEye, StarFox 64 etc.
fucking love the first song sounds like sod/mod thick as fuck

+Griffin Tremaine It's a must buy. One of my top 20 at least Genesis games. I personally think it's a better Road Rash than Road Rash is.
Well good because it's on the way to my house!

rockcock64 da video game
All that Gen X packed into one tiny cartridge.
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
The most 90's game ever made.
My god. These sampled guitars are epic. Really reminds you of how edgy the early and late 90's were.
08:26 Psycho Deep Fry, sick riff

Fav:
10:46 Silken Liver Slipper
18:32 Chug Wagon

That distorted guitar sample is awful but it sounds so good :D
Thank you for this, #1 most played game as a kid, glad to see soo many comments loving it too :D
This game's music and presentation really put it over the top. Dropped at the height of the grunge era. Memories, aaah.
10:46
"Konami, Fuck You!" - AlphaOmegaSin
Road Rash Folks really out did themselves
This game looks pretty fun. You should do the Road Rash soundtrack! That game has some great tracks!

Ver good music))))
41:06 was the reason for me to watch. :)
Its like i remembre fifa title screen theme
That game was so fun at that time. Loved it! :)
Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!
So many memories.

Wow, used to play the crap out of this with my friend on SEGA Channel back in the day. Not as good as Road Rash but still really fun.
id buy this
Need more of 1:49...
Nice. Been waiting for this one.
Did anybody notice that there was a simplified sound mixer for the genesis dac?
SNES Drunk sent me!
Sssssssssnes drunk

Download link please? It'd be great to have as individual tracks on the go.
good thing you uploaded this the emulation of the samples suck in both regen and fusion!
Excellent soundtrack and the grungy tunes are very catchy.
This takes me back such an awesome sound track
Lembra living colour.
18:31 can't remember the name, was my favorite at that time
Chug wagon
4UN FUN
this soundtrack proves the genesis/magedrive dac can be split 4 times
I count two times? Bass, cymbals and lead are FM+PSG afaict
The menu theme in Toy Story does split it into four 6-bit channels

This is the type of soundtrack I’d imagine Beavis & Butthead rockin’ out to on their couch 😂
Hamburger sandwich vibes
