- The very first troubleshooting step in almost every Pro Tools problem is Trashing Preferences. In this video I walk you through the steps on Windows, and then talk about some of the changes that are made when you trash preferences.
This video is focused on Pro Tools 11 and 12 on Windows. For Mac, or older versions of Pro Tools, check these links:

Hey Mister BenoniStudio, I want to thank you so very much for your video, it helped me greatly to solve various problems I had with my Pro Tools 11 version; I followed your instructions and now everything is working properly so well. So thank you so very much again.
Wishing you all the best!
Thanks sir.
Hey would you happen to know how to expand the mix window tracks to fill the screen my mix window looks like yours and want to expand the tracks to full screen
There isn't a way to expand them, all you can do is show more items in the view. Use the Mix Windows View Selector at the bottom left of the Mix window.
Thanks man saved me a trip down agro street ...
Hey, great tutorial! Before I go ahead with this, would doing this make it easier to play Pro Tools simply through the headphone jack and/or the on-board speakers and NOT have to use AISO? I'm using a Surface Pro 4, with i5 processor and 8g RAM , fyi.
Not doing a ton of heavy duty, plug-in heavy editing. Mostly VO, voice tracking, radio spot and promo imaging pieces. Any thoughts?
Not really. Trashing preferences is a basic troubleshooting step and it's good to do from time to time. Using Pro Tools through WASAPI is hit and miss. You may want to try something like ASIO4ALL and that will route through the on-board speakers. Or if you have FL Studio (or checkout the trial) the included ASIO driver is fantastic.
Thanks a lot I will be trying these steps out later on today.pro tools 12 is giving me a headache I keep getting error message 9173 every time im in a session pressing play button or Click track the error message pops up.
I keep deleting preferences and it will work the first time around however the next day it will give me error 6009 or how the hardware could not be acquired because another program is using it. How do I end this vicious cycle? Please Im dying
Are you on Windows and trying to use your ASIO interface for Windows sounds and Pro Tools? Windows can lock the ASIO drivers and prevent Pro Tools from using them. I usually recommend using the internal source for Windows sounds and your ASIO interface for Pro Tools.
great video...
does doing this delete projects also?
no. just preferences.
Instead of recoloring, could you open a template?
my preferences does not show in setup window what can I do
