Occy is a true champion. Man i can watch the green iguana a million times. And the occ just blows my miind every single time o eatch it. I saw him recently and finally got to tell him how much that video and his surfing in it means to me. I was surfing winkipops the same time he was surfing his winning final at the 98 Bellls. I was catching the same lines of swell he was riding a couple hundred metres across the beach. I couldn't believe how fun that surf was.
Goofy legend. Wish there was a better way to describe a left hand board rider other than Goofy. It doesn't do legends like Occy any justice. Stood next to the fella on the rocks at snapper one time and turned to him and said gday. Friendly fella. I was star struck. Little NZ surfer seeing a legend in the flesh.
Occy was great. But there are too many cut off/shortened clips in this video. I mean right in the arch of a powerturn, or just as he goes completely vert!
Idolised him as a grom, even bought his shoes. Surfed dbah recently where he attempted to drop in on me but missed the wave. I smiled and said hey as he was pretty much paddling on top of me in a desperate attempt to snake me. He replied with a literal grunt. I laughed and paddled away while his band of middle aged kook dads laughed at him scorning me. Reminded me of high school where occy was the queen bee being followed around by a posse of awkward teenage girls with low self esteem who were just thankful that he was picking on someone else for the moment. Safe to say he isn't one of my idols anymore.
