  • We are meant to GO DEEP into our understanding of the scriptures. And it's not as hard you may have thought! This careful study of Romans 3:21-28 will deal with topics of propitiation, imputation, justification, boasting, and the comfort of having accepted that you are a totally lost sinner saved totally by the grace of God.
    Be blessed.

In the book The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom there is the part where her mother lay dying and those around her were talking about all her good works. How she fed people and visited the sick and taught the feeble minded and Corrie's mother says, "No, I thank God when I go to him it will be with empty hands." All our good works pale in comparison to the righteousness in Jesus. Love the book of Romans. I was found by Jesus and saved through reading Romans.

Mike - thanks! This is quite a summation of Paul's argument through this section as it stands within the whole epistle. What to me is sad is that this is 'going deep' - to simply read and understand what has been written. How few Christians can define Justification, Redemption, Propitiation, Grace, Imputation, Righteousness, etc.? Very few in my own experience of asking them to define these terms that are the foudation of our understanding of God and Christ. Now, admittedly, Paul packs a TON of stuff into some 170 words here, so one has to read, think, research, learn, re-read, etc. a LOT to get hold of these truths because each word is just what it ought to be. As Strunk and White say: Be concise, be concise, be concise. (though in many places I would have liked to have had a good editor)
    : - )

This has always been a big debate between Christians. The Bible tells us that God knew us before we were born. We are also told their is a book of Life in which the names of those are saved..... so unless you think God has a pencil and eraser constantly adding and erasing names, it stands to reason that once saved always saved. The question is, is your name written in the Book of Life?

    • @merrittascott3323
      @merrittascott3323 4 года назад +2

Hi, I read where it says in John 3 that God wishes that none perish, that all come to repentance. For I did not send My Son into the world to condemn it but that the world through Him could be saved.
When we are saved we enter into a covenant with God. We surrender our lives to His ways, we die to self will, we make Jesus our LORD, Master Who guides us into the righteousness of Christ. We believe with our hearts, not our emotions.
It's a commitment we freely choose.
When a believer chooses to no longer honor the commitment, the person chooses to leave God and return to their own ways.
The Holy Spirit will continue to draw them because God is faithful, but if the person does not desire to return then the name is removed from the Lamb's Book Of Life.
      They deserted God.

    • @MrBlakeleyden
      @MrBlakeleyden 3 года назад

Yes but also No. You can lose it, But ONLY if you choose to no longer have faith in:(trust in, rely soley upon) what Jesus for completely taking your wrath upon himself. Its a done deal. Do you accept that, or Not? I personally do not like the term "once saved, always saved" for that very reason. You can change what you believe. But as Mike laid out clearly in this video, it is by faith alone. Romans 11:6 puts it plainly as well.
If there was even 1 thing that you HAD to refrain from doing, or to keep on doing to save yourself, then Christ's death was PURPOSELESS. You would also have something to BOAST about. Mike clearly dismantled that argument. We are all truly losers. Jesus just chose to give is a gift of righteousness, because he loves us.
That is my opinion on the matter. I struggled with this exact question FOR A LONG Time. Watching Mike's videos has completely changed my mind on the matter.

Lost faith (apostasy from Christ) equals lost salvation. Saved by grace through faith. Keep your faith in Him and you will be saved. Hebrews 10
Now faith is made complete by the fruit it produces but one is saved before the fruit manifests. Just as Abraham received the promise by faith and later that faith was proven genuine by the sacrifice of Isaac.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.
These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith-of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.
Even angels long to look into these things.
Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.
As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work justly, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.
Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.
      1 Peter 1:3‭-‬14‭, ‬16‭-‬25
Be sure your faith is real because only real faith saves.
God talks about this saving faith through James in James chapter 2 and this kind of saving faith is demonstrated in Hebrews 11.
The first fruit of true faith is a born again, spiritual heart change from the Lord. Your desires shift toward righteousness, not as a way to prove how good you are but because of what God has done for you and in you.
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this (make a practice of these things) will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
      Galatians 5:13‭-‬26
Once the change is done for you, and in you, by grace through faith, the fruit which follows is what God is now doing through you to bless His people and to reach out to broken and fallen people whom the Lord seeks to redeem.
We must learn of Him and grow intimately with God through pray and His word in order to get in line with His will a d the work He is doing in and through us.
Our freedom comes, as Jesus said to the believing Jews, by holding to ( believing and living out) His teaching. Then we will know the truth and the truth will set us free. John 8:31‭-‬32
We have confidence in what we hope for and assurance about the promises, even though we don't physically see them yet because the one who made the promise is faithful.
Be faithful out of joy and thanksgiving for the gift given; knowing that He will finish the good work He started, even if it doesn't always feel that way.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
      1 John 1:5‭-‬10
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father-Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
      1 John 2:1‭-‬2‭, ‬15‭-‬17‭, ‬28‭-‬29
“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
      Mark 1:15

Propitiation is basically like in this following example. A king, who has authority over his subjects (of course) is attacked by one of his subjects. The king has the right, then, to have that subject put to death. However, he doesn't really want this person to die, so he tells this subject that if he will, say, clean the houses of everyone in the kingdom over the next five years, then he'll be set free. (Of course, he'll be under guard during this time, not being free to leave the kingdom.) That is the propitiation; it's what the king requires to be appeased.
In a similar vein, the wages of sin is death, and the soul that sins shall die. We have each sinned, and we each deserve to die and to undergo the second death mentioned in Revelation, which is eternal damnation. However, God--our King, our Authority--doesn't want us to die, so He provided us with a way out. He determined what needed to be done as propitiation, to "appease" Him from damning us all. He in His Son died in our place, even though He never sinned, and if we believe that and love and submit to and follow the Son, then we are set free. Believing (trusting) in Him is our propitiation. It's what the offended Authority says will "appease" Him or make Him willing to forego our damnation. (With God, He even brings us into His presence for all eternity, going beyond propitiation and forgiveness!)
It's also kind of like you owing a bank more money than you can pay, and the bank says, okay, just pay us half and we'll call it even. You pay the half, and the loan is cleared. It isn't marked "paid in full" because it wasn't paid in full. (That would be lying.) Rather, the remaining balance on the loan is simply eliminated. It's kind of got the concept of propitiation there, although I'm not sure a bank can ask for propitiation. I think it's more for someone like a king or a god, someone with that kind of authority, due that kind of respect.
Of course, if the subject in the first paragraph doesn't clean the houses, or if someone dies physically without believing in Jesus, or if the person doesn't pay back half of the loan, then the conditions of the propitiation have not been met, and the original negative consequence remains (physical death for #1, eternal damnation for #2, perhaps jail or repossession of property for #3).
Basic outline: Authority is done against. The Authority provides a means of propitiation, how to make it right. The offending person meets the terms of the propitiation and is exonerated, or the person does not meet them and receives the due negative consequences. The propitiation is whatever the offended authority determines.

Hi pastor Mike Winger thanks for good teaching you giving us, it is really helpful and enlightening. I have been wondering what could it be that when it comes to salvation we have to believe to be saved and with sin , we didn't have to believe to be sinner, we became sinners cause we were born physically under Adam who sin. Does Adam sin run in our blood stream because of physically birth, please explain why the processes are slightly different 🙏

Listening to you was like hearing my own reflections on God spoken aloud. It is truly beautiful to know someone who walks in the same Spirit as yourself. When I was in my early twenties, I did perhaps the only wise thing in my life, I read the bible in its entirety. I prayed that God would hide his Word in my heart, and I prayed that even should I stray, he would bring me back. I strayed hard after that though. For almost a decade I lived in sin. Yet almost not a day went by that I did not think about God and His word, and I would cry out regularly to him. I had trouble reconciling my sinful nature with my faith in Christ, and it caused me to stumble hard. I somehow thought that because I continued to sin so grievously despite having been saved, I was hopeless, and I became lost. Lately my prayer has been that God will fill me up with an unending love for Him, and He is answering in a big way. I now suddenly understand that before Christ, I lived IN sin, bound to it, unable to escape it. Now I understand that now that I live in Christ, I merely live WITH sin. God has poured out his grace on me, because like you said, I know me. He has blessed me at every turn. I know that these understandings are not really my own, but rather what He has shown me through his word, and through my life. I love my God, and I know how little I deserve His love in return, but I thank Jesus that he does! That is why I have my hope in Christ, to be made pure and new in him someday. I love you, thank you for this message and God bless you!

The jews had their teachers but not of them really understood although a deep knowledge was assumed : Jesus however as a small boy ,was able to debate them.
But, not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem, making a diligent search for him. 46 Well, after three days they found him in the temple,+ sitting in the midst of the teachers and listening to them and questioning them. 47 But all those listening to him were in constant amazement at his understanding and his answers.

When you said "name the people who you think can't be saved", I thought instantly of famously evil dead people. Because dead people can't be saved, obviously. And then you clarify that you're thinking of live people, which makes more sense, since anybody can be saved while they still have future choices and chances.

I know I’m 5 years late on this, but I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the “Pistis Christou” interpretation of v22. The “faithfulness OF Christ,” rather than “faith IN Christ.” I tend to lean the former but I’d love to hear your insight

This study is so important. All the historical facts and touching down on how God died is psalms 22 which is proof for Muslims and Jehovah Witnesses who claim he didn't die or that it was a pole not a cross. Writings sounds of Jesus but found to be written before God entered his creation as Jesus Christ.

    Mike,
I just want to make emphasis on the passage on Romans 3:23 "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" I have never heard this be explained satisfactory, expositors fly through this passage without going into it. No one responds to the question this verse possess, what does it mean to fall short of the glory of God? According to my understanding from Paul's writings, basically it says that God cannot give us of His Glory because of our sin. This is not foreign to the gospel since Paul constantly preaches the glory that is to be revealed in us at His coming and that we are growing day by day in the spirit and showing the glory of the Lord in us. Jesus allows the Father to treat us as righteous but it does not stop there. Even though the Father treat as as righteous, and by faith and repentance He gives us the Holy Spirit which is who gives us the capacity to grow in righteousness, we need to grow in LOVE the type of love described in 1 Corinthians 13. I suggest to you the parable of the talents as a word to Christians so that we know we need to grow in LOVE which is the Fruit of the Spirit we need to produce until we die. I hope Christians don't just settle to be counted as righteous and not abide in obedience to Jesus's word to grow in the Spirit, the kingdom of God grows in us and it is manifested in LOVE, and this is the gospel.

During the Judgement hour of Christians how are they Judged? How about the people of the world how are the Judged at the end of the Age? How do we get so many weeds among the Christian? How does God separate the weeds from the wheat? Why must Christian get out of Babylon the Great?
    ('Revelation 18:4
I heard another voice out of heaven say: “Get out of her, my people, if you do not want to share with her in her sins, and if you do not want to receive part of her plagues.

If Justification has two components the cleansing of sin an imputed righteousness, wouldn't it make sense that the righteousness imputed is the Holy Spirit? This would simplify the, 'is it by grace or by works', debate. We are cleansed so we can receive the promise of the Spirit so we can live righteous lives.

bruise and crush often come from the same original language word, for example Isaiah 53:10. KJV says it pleased the LORD to bruise Him. I believe the ESV says it pleased the LORD to crush Him. Two drastically different words in our day, but I haven't studied this enough to know why the difference in translation.

Did OT jews understand Yahweh would enter humanity as Messiah?
Or is this understanding a hind sight proposition? Any Talmudic tradition shows the Messiah as Deity entering the human form?
We can make this claim only in hindsight. Unless Im missing something.

Great Stuff, just wish you spent more time on propitiation and its pagan background and then how Paul turns it on its head using it to describe the work of the cross.

    • @KarlsKronicles
      @KarlsKronicles 2 года назад +1

@@elizabethtassonecuprunneth7882 Sorry it took me a year to get back with you on your question. Here is the short of it, considering the venue we have here. Propitiation means to appease or placate. The pagans would do this to get what they needed from the gods, such as make their wives futile, keep disease away from their home, provide rain for a good crop and stay off the locusts. For the most part, these gods were more human than humans in that their emotions ran them. They could be very capricious. So for the most part, one didn't want to come under the scrutiny of their god/s. Because now they could be in harms way. But they needed the help from their gods for their own benefit. Notice that they brought the sacrifice and the blood was offered the god to appease them, get them off their back and get what they needed from them. This picture seems to stand in the way of the appeasement of Jesus' cross. But when you realize that it was God who brought the sacrifice and not you or I and that He Himself was the appeasement the whole pagan idea is turned on its head. Also, the blood was not for God. He was not looking for His pound of flesh. Instead, the blood shed was for you and me in order to reconcile us back to God. It was for our benefit, not for God's. Paul shows us something not seen in the pagan sacrifices. Not us who sacrificed to appease God, but God who sacrificed to restore us. The anthem the heavenly host sings to Jesus in Rev. 5, "“Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation" tells it all. Praise God that He put forth His Son as a propitiation and by His cross showed He was just and the justifier of the one who would have faith in what Jesus did for us on the cross.

Conflating "works of [mosaic] law" with all works is just flat out incorrect. James 2:14-26. There are works of faith, and there are works of mosaic law. They are not the same thing. One was an extensive list of written decrees, the other consists of doing the will of God (Matthew 7:21, 1 Timothy 2:4) your repeated conflation of the two under one term doesn't harmonise with either it's smaller context or the new testament as a whole

5:30 Hey Mike I agree with what your were saying about gaining righteousness apart from the law bc he came to fulfill it not to abolish it, and that's him creating a pathway for salvation. I know he has covenants with the Jews and he has the new covenant for gentiles. Gene Kim was teaching on this that the old testament doesn't matter and that God turned his back on the Jews and that the ten commandments were for the Jews among other things. This was his teaching on keeping the Sabbath. I lost it and pointed out this verse
Rev 12:17 "Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS of God AND hold to the testimony of Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea." I think this means just believing in Jesus isn't enough we have to obey. Obeying isn't trying to earn your way into heaven it's the fruit of being graphed into the vine. Dr Kim has it really twisted prob lots of other ppl too. You should check out that Sabbath keeping video it's such blasphemy. I used to like that guy. I highly esteem you for rightly dividing the word, that is all ;-}>

The Greek word for "Glory" is "Doxa", which primarily means, "View and opinion". We come short of God's view and opinion - not because we don't shine like He does.
