    Great job with this comparison. As a SONY/Canon shooter, I opted for the A7IV on lens selection alone. Truthfully, I could be happy with the R6 Mark II just the same, but economics prevail.

    Depends how much money you have/are willing to spend. Rag on Canon all you want for not having 3rd party lenses, but the R6 with Canon L glass, particularly their 28-70mm f/2, is superior to any A7 setup you can come up with.

    I have a Canon 90D, but when I switch the full frame mirrorless, I don’t know if I should stick to Canon and go with the R6 Mark II or switch to Sony and get the A7IV. I’ve been looking at the Sony Alpha subreddit and I’ve been loving how the photos look.

    For me it's actually the shutter sound and grip comfortability.
    I shot a wedding with the R6. So smooth and quiet. Silent shutter was so easy
    Went back to my A7III. That clack is such a distraction in the quieter moments and then I have to worry about rolling shutter or lights in silent mode.
    Then the grip, I almost liken the Canon to an Audi. The user experience is really catered for.
    While the Sony feels more like a Volkswagen. Less comfortable but very practical.
    For me the best of both worlds would be the A9III with a bigger grip.
    Also Sony not having a stabilised 24-70mm f2.8 is baffling to me.

    Having owned both cameras your points are spot on. I will say I prefer the mode dial of the R6II though. The A7IV mode dial was the only thing that felt cheap on the A7IV to me and it was very touchy. In terms of IQ despite the resolution difference, I prefer the R6 II in terms of color and quality. The lack of 3rd party lenses is a HUGE problem for Canon. Currently I am stuck using older, heavier EF glass and while it works flawlessly, adapting is miserable. Also, when watching video, IMO Sony still blows Canon away. Maybe it is user error, but the video quality of the A7IV was far better. The main difference that left me with Canon was the burst rate. As a hybrid sports shooter, the A7IV just could not keep up on the photo side for fast action. All in all, both great cameras, but I think if I could do it all again, I would have kept the A7IV for the better video quality and lens selection.

      The plastic exterior (R6 II) looks cheap, and when you open the battery compartment cover you can see the thickness of the camera on the outside - it's so thin that a bump would break it (not like my 5DIV). I prefer the Sony a7IV, it looks more robust and solid.

  • @thisiserich
    @thisiserich Год назад +2

    These two are so close. With the iso comparison I honestly couldn’t see what you were talking about, the canon looks just as sharp to me. Though I do know Sony has some behind the scenes noise reduction and sharpening going on that makes it appear to have less noise. When you turn high iso NR off, the Sony has some really bright chroma noise that isn’t evenly spaced throughout and can be a bit blotchy. But I’m not sure noise even matters anymore with the insane noise reduction AI that many softwares, including Lightroom, now have.
    The extra 8.8 megapixels on the Sony can be advantageous for cropping a bit more but at both of these cameras respective 100% crops, the sharpness and detail look identical, with the only caveat being that the Sony appears to be “closer” to the subject in the crop due to the larger image size.
    The video looks great on both, Sony may have a slight edge there in the image it captures, but that’s where it ends in my opinion. The bad ibis and rolling shutter limit what you can achieve with the A7IV to slower and more static shots. Panning is nigh impossible and any little shakes you get show up as wobbly or tilting vertical lines in the A7IV. It just can’t handle action or movement well at all with the 27ms sensor readout speed. The R6II is far better with this with a sensor readout speed that rivals cameras above it’s weight class.
    I honestly don’t know, man. It’s a really hard decision between these two. I just spend a year and a half shooting on an A7IV and it wasn’t always enjoyable. I had a few shoots ruined due to the rolling shutter problem, and it’s so settings and tech heavy that it’s difficult to keep up with all the little bits and bobs you have to set to get going. I just switched to the R6II to see what it’s like so I guess I’ll find out in the next year. Wish me luck. Lol.

    One thing I notice here is just how much sharper the R6 II is, especially at higher ISOs. Seems the R6 II has a weaker AA filter and the A7IV seems to have a lot of noise reduction applied to files making them "mushy". 3:16 is a great example of this... the A7IV has no detail at all in most of the frame.

    • @Eikenhorst
      @Eikenhorst Год назад +1

      Yea, possibly, but this difference is almost certainly due to the lens used and how it reacts with the very strong light in the frame. This affects contrast, but with some lenses more so than with others. I don't think it is due to the sensor.

    Imagine when canon opens their mount to third party I think everyone will switch to canon simply because of the superior auto focus and ergonomics superb ibis, great screens and awesome native glass. Sony keeps thinking they can pull off minor upgrades between cameras and no firmware updates for older cameras. Not anymore they have a serious competition and canon has done amazing in the last few years to catch up or may be push past Sony.

    I made a mistake of pre-ordering canon r7, i got too exited. And now it sits on my shelf, because I shoot wildlife. With adaptor their old lenses do not perform as you would expect, tamron can be thrown out to trash and their 100-500, 3000k lense is 7.1 + you loose half range with their extenders. Mid blowing, even If I threw all my money on one lense. I cant justify it given performance and the fact that sony has half price 200-600 that is extra 100 reach 6.3. This is the lense that is making me think about switching, being canon user since the beginning. Canon r7 body 1.5k body + 3000 zoom, costs more than Sony R7 iv 2.2k + zoom 1.7k. I wish I bought sony for mirorless and regret my purchase, only if I knew they would not support 3rd party lenses!

  • @Justmakesomenoiz
    @Justmakesomenoiz 5 месяцев назад

    If Sony would make a camera around 30 megapixel, much better screen and evf and also clean up their menus. I would consider going back to Sony. Had the R6 earlier and loved that camera. Yes the lenses are super expensive. 85/1.2 Costa around 3100$ in Sweden that's bananas. I used EF glas and mostly sigma. Worked good and but it sucks that still almost 3 years down the line that they haven't released any third party lenses. Thinking on picking up a new camera but can't spend like 7500$ for three lenses which i want to own. 35,85 and 70-200 that's what I need to pay for used lenses.
    So conserving either a used r6 again or a new r6ii with a used 70-200 or a used 85/1.2

      Return it. SInce you seem to be primarily a video shooter, you would benefit far more from the capabilities of the Sony!

    • @thisiserich
      @thisiserich Год назад +8

      I don’t know, dude. The A7IV has some horrific rolling shutter in video, which actually ruined a shoot for me, and the ibis on the Sony does next to nothing, so you need to invest in a gimbal with the A7IV for video no matter what. With the R6ii, the ibis wobble is only visible below 22mm. So if you can manage shooting handheld at or above 22mm, then you have nothing to worry about, but again, you’d have to invest in a gimbal to shoot wider than 22mm on canon to get rid of the wobble(by turning stabilization off). The r6ii’s sensor readout speed is essentially twice as fast as the A7IV, so the tilt you see in video with fast moving subjects or while panning is negligible, but very noticeable on the Sony. Plus the r6ii can shoot sports photos with the electronic shutter at 40fps, while the Sony cannot due to its slow readout speed. Plus 12fps uncompressed raw on the r6ii vs 5fps uncompressed raw on the A7IV.
      As for codecs, it depends on what platform you’re shooting for. If it’s youtube or delivering wedding clients a video or something, IPB is totally fine. You will not notice a difference. If you’re shooting a big production then you may want the all i. Remember though, IPB is a compressed format, so when you’re editing it gets decompressed and retains most of the information that you’d get out of all i.
      From my experience the r6ii produces a nicer looking image in both photo and video. I had the A7IV for a year and it was a fine camera, but I really like what I’m getting out of the r6ii. More than what I got from the A7IV. To my eyes, everything on the canon just looks neater and more well put together when you pixel peep. When viewing at full width, the Sony’s images always looked so washed out to me, and it has a slight green tint to it. Not enough contrast and you can tell even after editing. This happens because of the great dynamic range of the A7IV. The canon’s colors are just immaculate, so is the contrast. But that’s subjective and it’s what I prefer.
      So no, I don’t think you made a bad choice because in the end, the two are strikingly similar in performance. If you tried both you’d probably find the differences negligible as I did.

    I have all the lens i need in RF EF in almost all the focal lengths, 3rd party lens is not an issue just want the RF 28-70F2 only Canon makes it ... no 3rd party or Sony makes that one. My EF lens focus better on the RF platform w/ the adapter that allows me to have ND/Pol filter, super convenient on the run and gun... so I picked up the R6ii and waiting for the R5ii along with the R1. Sold the Sony A1 with no AI chip before the price bombs and picked up the R3 with awesome specs.. My A7iv is collecting dust and having more fun with the Nikon Z6ii i bought on sale. Maybe i'll wait for the A9iii to see if it will have the AI chip. If you wanted to start today: At today's offerings... all the makers are really good..... they all are fun and great to shoot photos, videos with and all the makers are coming out with awesome focus algorithms (except Nikon), great unique lens....just choose a brand that fits your hand well and enjoy making images... . One serious problem i see is if you travel a lot, you will find some countries don't know, don't sell and don't support Sony.... recently Brazil...have lots of sad Sony users. Anyone sitll have their VAIO with the exploding batteries? i have 2 in the garage still waiting for my replacement batteries. but for traveling the Sony compact body and lens are wonderful to carry around.
