Hey Guys, I know I’ve posted videos on how to make a sacrificial fence before but I think this one is more clear and to the point. Also I’m really happy to be working with CMT Orange Tools www.cmtorangetools.com/na-en/ and thought this would be a good video to show off their blades. Have a good Sunday and enjoy the game, Jon
I think I saw you only flip that board and keep the saw in one direction on that new fence. Newbie at wood working, and your the first to do this in a video. Thanks
Your earlier sacrificial fence video changed my frustration with my miter saw completely. Thank you! Do you by chance have a video for that zero clearance plate you made for the first miter saw you use in this video?
Thank you Jon. I just did a molding frame for the opening towards my attic. So the pretty oak moldings got cut and I got this 1/32 ish split. I re-shaved the cuts with the saw, clamped the parallel pieces together to check fit and sanded them with a piece of ply wrapped in sandpaper and eventually made it work, but it's 99.8% perfect not 100. But I figured there must be an easier way and here I am - I have to install moldings in the house. My process was very time consuming. Also, potentially expensive if I had to redo the molding framing.
Awesome addition to any miter saw, Jon. I might need to make one that slides into place somehow without screws because I use my saw for cutting wider boards as well. But that should be possible to do. Thanks for watching, Jon!
Thanks Jon, On the subject of pin nailing miters the way you've shown in the video, I've observed that when doing the same operation with a stringy grained wood like oak, the pin nails can sometimes ride the grain outward and protrude from the side of the frame. I've never seen one completely fire through but still....watch those fingers!
If you have a 12-inch miter saw blade you’re going to need a longer base than 3.75”. I used 6.75” and it worked well on my Bosch. But I learned this the hard way.
Nice video. I subscribed. Very clear video Realistic and “easy” to do No tacky music. One thing I would ask is how to get 100% straight boards for the sacrificial fence? I don’t have a table saw or jointer etc. I only have a miter saw. Any tricks for that?
Steve I am by no means a woodworker, but and learning to make pict frames , this is simple and I believe I can do it. Thanks can drill on one side will clamp othe, is 3/8 in plywood stable enough?
I built your fancy frame project and it sold the painting. It received great fanfare for a frame that took only a couple hours to make out of scraps. It would go quicker with this sacrificial fence. The painters tape is beautiful idea too. Thx
another great one Jon !! No need to respond..I am a very loyal fan ...and I am excited about your part in the 'Mob Scene" .....I know that some times you occasionally touch on fan questions and I have one . One of the problems that I have had as a 'New' ( it's been jeeze 40 years now ha ) wood worker that even with great engineer squares is that my 45* will often line up but won't always be co planer . Not sure I asked that right ...but if you get 12 seconds some time I'd really appreciate you comments . Again many thanks a 1000 times brother keep on keeping on ...-ml
Hi Matt ... thanks man I appreciate it. it sounds like the blade may not be at a perfect 90 degree... or the fence is not flat on the saw. That’s what I would look into first.
Looks like an excellent way to avoid chipout and provide a little extra support without a miter station, but how do you get such accurate angles on a miter saw? I'm always told that's tough to do and haven't had that much luck myself.
jon great tips here. i was putting trim on the bookcase you made but I was moving the saw rather than flipping the workpiece - lost a decent amount of material that way. you're just flipping the piece as you cut rather than move the saw? seeing similar hitachi saw at lowes for 99 right now.
Jon - I notice you don't use your sliding compound miter saw for this. Is your preference to use a non-sliding saw for this purpose? Is it due to accuracy or that the Bosch in this case is not reliable?
This is a fantastic video Jon. Thank you! I'm embarking on making some frames out of family farm barn wood for my family for Christmas. Do you cut your own glass for the frames to save a little money? If so, I'd be curious if you have a video for that! Thanks again for an awesome step-by-step video.
I’ve got an old used table saw and I didn’t come with one. I posted a video a few weeks ago about my shop tools you can check it out if you want to hear more about it
I have a question, if you are cutting mitred wouldnt it be best to cut one half of the joint on each side of the fence? So even if your blade is out by 0.3 degrees, then it will also be out 0.3 degrees the other way, on the other side, so it is still exactly 90deg corner overall
Hi Jon, I noticed when you adjust the fence on your table saw with the tap tap tap.... Is the distance between the blade and the wood the same from front to back because it seems like the back of the fence on the table saw move around as well.
Jon, I have a DeWalt miter saw and when its necessary to cut from opposite sides(like for non square molding) it removes a triangle section in the sacrificial fence. Do you have a way I can quickly and repeatably move the fence back and forth?

By far the best advice for making frames I have found...thanks
Excellent painting of a phenomenal musician.
Thanks for taking the time to make that. Definitely like this technique and will help me clean up my miter joints
Miter cuts are by far my biggest frustration and opportunity for improvement. I'm gonna try this asap! Thank you!
This is crazy timing Jon. I just did this to one of my miter saws after watching one of your older videos!! Makes a world of difference.
Simply the best. Love Jon he’s such an inspiration
Jon your art is terrific in both your woodwork and paintings.
Thanks Bill!
I think I saw you only flip that board and keep the saw in one direction on that new fence. Newbie at wood working, and your the first to do this in a video. Thanks
Yes that’s correct, by flipping the board you can cut the opposite miter.
YES!!! the fact that your painting a Jimi Hendrix is just UPandUp your stock!! many blessings Friend! :)
Your earlier sacrificial fence video changed my frustration with my miter saw completely. Thank you!
Do you by chance have a video for that zero clearance plate you made for the first miter saw you use in this video?
Eres un seco amigo Jon Peters, gracias por compartir tus conocimientos saludos desde la ciudad de Puerto Montt, Sur de CHILE saludos .
I think building one of these fences will help me a lot. I plan to spend this weekend making a bunch of frames. I should make this first!
You always make great videos. May you never get tired of making videos.
I had no idea you were such an awesome artist!!! Thanks so much for the tour of the artwork. I love them!!!
Thanks Bryan. I'll be posting a lot more art videos on my Makers Mob site in the coming months.
Awesome, thanks so much. Trying to decide between sacrificial fence for the chop saw or sled for the table saw, but yours is so much easier I think.
Terrific work as usual Jon! I need to build me one of those sacrificial fences, so thanks for that!
@5:16 is such a simple tip I wish I would've known awhile ago.
You are the best hands down.
Thanks for the instructional on sac fences. Your art is beautiful.
Wow that is some nice artwork.
The king of miters is at it again...
Simple but so necessary. I'm headed out to make one now. thanks for posting.

Wow,your home looks very nice with your artwork hanging proudly. Lovin that wainscotting. Meticulous!
Thanks .. the images are not my home .. just my artwork
Jimmy looks amazing so far! Please post updates throughout the project.
Awesome addition to any miter saw, Jon. I might need to make one that slides into place somehow without screws because I use my saw for cutting wider boards as well. But that should be possible to do. Thanks for watching, Jon!
Great video Jon, Cheers from Australia.
Love your presentations Jon.
Great video Jon.
Thanks for all the tips. I've applied the stuff I've learned from you for the past years especially on frame making. Thanks as always!
Why I have not made one of these essential items yet I do not understand. Doing it today. Thanks for stimulating my brain cells.
Another great tip. Love the artwork!
Excellent
Well, now I know what to do with my Baltic Birch off-cuts. Thanks, as always.
im learning a lot from your vids thanks
Thanks for sharing this instructional video.
This is excellent!
Very simple. I need to make one for my saw. Thanks Jon!
Amazing project Jon !!!! Thank's for sharing !!!! Panos from Greece.
Awesome stuff Jon! 👍🏻👊🏻
Great paintings. A man of many talents. I feel like I’m looking at myself. 😂😊
Thanks Jon, On the subject of pin nailing miters the way you've shown in the video, I've observed that when doing the same operation with a stringy grained wood like oak, the pin nails can sometimes ride the grain outward and protrude from the side of the frame. Will do :) thanks
I made a zero clearance throat plate so that I only need to replace the fence when needed, Jon.
Muito legal. Parabéns John. Meu aniversário é em março. Fica dica abraço de Caxias do sul RS 🇧🇷.
I couldn’t use a miter saw, router or jig to save my life. Amazing work!
If you have a 12-inch miter saw blade you’re going to need a longer base than 3.75”. I used 6.75” and it worked well on my Bosch. But I learned this the hard way.
I started watching and was like what's a fence????? Ha! Guess I'll go look for workshop 101
I'll have to make one of these for myself, cheers Jon. that's going to be a pretty cool Hendrix piece.
Thank you, great tips as always. Many blessings.
What makes the cmt products so good
Thank you very helpful, ? Is a plain miter saw more accurate than a compound miter saw for doing miter cuts? Buying a new saw
As interesting as ever good job.
You're home is ridiculous! So jealous
Nice video. I subscribed.
Very clear video
Realistic and “easy” to do
No tacky music.

Thank you, Jon.
What brand is miter saw you used in video?
Great video! Thanks. But as to width, is that 3-3/4 total or 3-3/4 plus the back?
I built your fancy frame project and it sold the painting. It received great fanfare for a frame that took only a couple hours to make out of scraps. It would go quicker with this sacrificial fence. The painters tape is beautiful idea too. Thx
Dobra robota.
Good job 👍

Does this stay only on one angle???
What gauge brads do you use?
18 & 23 gauge

Nice job, but have you ever tried the Hoffmann Dovetail joiner for picture frames.
Thanks... no I’ll need to look into that

What model is that miter saw you are making the sacrificial fence for?
Hi Jon, Just curious why you don't use a riving knife--Thx Tim
I’ve got an old used table saw and I didn’t come with one. I posted a video a few weeks ago about my shop tools you can check it out if you want to hear more about it
Yeah - I cringed when I saw that, too. I don’t trust myself without at least a riving knife in place.
Hi, I'm from Mexico, how still doing your combination table Saw blade?
I have a question, if you are cutting mitred wouldnt it be best to cut one half of the joint on each side of the fence? So even if your blade is out by 0.3 degrees, then it will also be out 0.3 degrees the other way, on the other side, so it is still exactly 90deg corner overall
Hi Jon,

It’s a t square fence so when it locks it’s the same at front and back
Nice👍🏽
Great video. I make frames for my son. What kind of wood are you using for the frame? Thanks.
G thank you , For painted frames I use poplar
Jon, I have a DeWalt miter saw and when its necessary to cut from opposite sides(like for non square molding) it removes a triangle section in the sacrificial fence. Do you have a way I can quickly and repeatably move the fence back and forth?
There’s a litle bit of Purple Haze over this video ;-)
How much Is the thickness of your fence? I want to build 2 mt of fence....
OK make sense thanks....
What kind of wood do you use to create frames?
Poplar

10 inch blade on a 12 inch saw?
What’s the benefit of a sacrificial fence?
still trying to figure out why in the hell i bought a 10" compound sliding, instead of a 12".. yours works so much smoother!
luv the Hendrix painting but I don't think it's going to fit in that small frame you made
I’ve owned several miter saws with lasers but I’ve never found one to be very accurate. 😕
Love your contemporary artwork! Just seems a little out of place in the Victorian style homes.
You an Hendrix's fan John ?
Sure I like all kinds of music
If your saw's 45 isn't a 45, a sacrificial fence won't give you perfect 45s.
Mine never worked either.
Ugh! I hate tip out!
#notipout
Jimi Hendrix....fuck ya!
🥇👏👏👏👏
Суперрр
Perfectly straight glue line....show off
Good luck in your new vencher probably did'nt spell this right
