  • The second generation of the Pixii Rangefinder Camera got a new sensor. The third gets a new 64-bit processor making it up to 10 times faster. It will also be the base needed for even more features added in the future, like for example live view via smartphone. For details about the latest model visit: pixii.fr

Great review, tak. I agree that the upgrade is a great deal. I am in for mine in the late January batch. The camera is overcoming market resistance to a "new" camera poaching on the Leica land. The Pixii approach of software + lens is a good one and the 64 bit SoC upgrade proves this. And while some wish it were cheaper we are in the real world here and have to deal with reality.

My Pixii was ordered before the upgrade and is sitting in France waiting to have the upgrade installed before shipping. Very excited to add this camera to my collection. This suits my style. Slow and manual focus.
For those complaining about the price, this is not a mass produced camera assembled by low wage workers in a low cost country. The camera is hand assembled in France by the same engineers who design, test, service etc the camera. I understand the desire to pay less but owning a Pixii is about more than just buying another camera. It is about taking part in something new and very different.
As for full frame vs APS-C, I have both Leica FF and Fuji cameras and I shoot the same lenses on both. No one has ever asked me which camera took a picture and definitely no one has ever cared about FF vs crop.

@@adnamamedia You're right it's tricky, my X100V has the same sensor and comes with a frankly fantastic lens so is super cheap in comparison, so not really a competitor. That said the Pixii is a bargain vs my most recent camera my M11. (I admit it, I probably spend too much on cameras, but I do keep them for ages, just gone bonkers recently!). I think the price of the pixii would be easier to live with if it had a FF sensor which would probably not cost that much more to make and would mean the M mount lenses would be used truly natively without crop. I guess we are mostly mad enthusiasts who watch this stuff, ultimately I am just delighted that for those who want to treat themselves to something different Pixii exists + I suspect Leica aren't worried, but will have noticed.

Mattias. How do you like the Pixxii camera? I tried the Leica M10 and I was quite dissapointed of its dynamic range, if you blow the highlights even just a little bit they are impossible to bring back, and if I tried to not blow them up a lot of the frame was very dark, some can be recovered but I felt like I didn't really have much room to play with. I am comparing it to my M6 which is film and it felt like night and day. I imagine you have experience with both. Where does the PixII fall in terms of dynamic range. I have not been able to find much information on the camera. On paper it sounds great, a nice compact M mount digital camera (Only a handful out there) with great technology. I am not too bummed by the lack of a screen because I like the 'film' experience and I don't like looking at the pictures every time I take one, if the meter works fine then I am all good. Which was another of my concerns with the M10, the meter didn't seem to be very accurate, regardless of the metering mode, I live in a sunny place and there is a lot of contrast and the meter was always all over the place getting fooled by light and dark areas. I am not sure if you can share your views on this as well, it would be greatly appreciated as I am considering buying one.

Most digital cameras are loaded with proprietary electronic components (displays, drivers, and especially the custom image processor -- Maestro, Digic, Xspeed, etc.) and these all eventually "go EOL" (end-of-life.) If your Leica's Maestro chip fails after that, the factory can't tell Kurt and Jurgen in the back shop to make you a new one out of raw silicon; your camera becomes a brick.
What Pixii has done is to move a lot of that proprietary functionality into software running on a general-purpose processor and an FPGA (field-programmable gate array, basically a "blank chip" than can be reflashed if needs change.) This costs more on a per-chip basis but gives more flexibility. For example, the previous A1571 model used a display that became scarce on the supply chain, so for the new A2571 model they switched to a more available one and rewrote the code so either the old one or the new one will work. From this perspective, the Pixii is MORE future-proof than most cameras.

As for the full frame argument, it is both truth and myth these days. Truth? Yes the Apsc offerings from the big three that being Canon, Sony, Nikon are inferior to their full frame offerings. Myth? Go and check out CameraLabs recent labratory testing of Fuji's latest proprietary fifth generation X-trans 40 megapixel sensor, where's your full frame god now? It devours 26MP full framers with bacon and a side of toast. Short of printing 4meter by 4meter placards or having an extremity for use in very dim light where full frame exhibits a small advantage, the likes of Pixii and Fuji have proven that you can tune the little guy to run with the big frame boys. Everybody knows this, if you hear about a professional using Apsc, what are they using? Fujifilm. The other big three apsc offerings are pro-sumer for bloggers and travellers, not for real professional work. It doesn't help that the big three's proprietary apsc lenses are toys and not tools. Hence why Pixii chose Leica M mount. Glass is the difference by far, many, many years ago my beloved 1inch Panasonic Lumix running a supercheap copycat Leica badged fixed zoom lens finally died and so I replaced it with a more expensive Canon Powershot G7x. Massive letdown, the Canon fixed lens was garbage compared to the Lumix-Leica..

I have a Pixii and like it, but one potential hurdle for current Leica M owners is that not all your M mount lenses will fit. Lenses that are too large in diameter or physically too long will obstruct the rangefinder window and make focusing difficult or impossible. This isn't a big problem if you're building a system around the Pixii, but if you already have a lot of RF lenses you may not like how often you find yourself saying, “Darn, I wish I could use my ______ “…

By tinkering with the delay timings, I was able to get reliable flash sync at up to 1/125.
