How can a 22-year-old boy from Minnesota write a song like that in 1963? How can a lovesick poet genius write a song like that? How can anyone write a song like that?
I think you know the answer. One can’t possibly have that much knowledge of history and literature at 22 to pen songs like he did. I’m n fact it would take 5 life times to acquire that much knowledge, and that is today in the age of instant information. He’s said himself; he was but a conduit receiving and pulling words from the ether.
I heard this song for the first time the night before my girlfriend passed away from cancer. I was feeling sad and lonely in bed by myself and I sent it to her. It was really early the next morning when I got the phone call. I'll never know if she got a chance to listen. Life sure is cruel and unfair sometimes, but she smiled regardless. Thank you Bob Dylan for your contribution to mankind.
"Oh, but if I had the stars from the darkest night. And the diamonds from the deepest ocean. I'd forsake them all for your sweet kiss. For that's all I'm wishin' to be ownin'." one of my favorite lines in any song I've ever heard.
Dylan is in a league of his own . Nobody can sing his songs better than him . His voice is just ..wow .. no other voices can sing his words in the way he intended and the depth of emotion .
True i believe mostly lol Had the same thoughts so many times. Some sick covers out there. But you are right about the depths and ideas of emotions. But!!!! Check out some shit billy strings has done. Woah Watchhouse too
From the film Adaptation (2002): Charlie Kaufman: There was this time in high school. I was watching you out the library window. You were talking to Sarah Marsh. Donald Kaufman: Oh, God. I was so in love with her. Charlie Kaufman: I know. And you were flirting with her. And she was being really sweet to you. Donald Kaufman: I remember that. Charlie Kaufman: Then, when you walked away, she started making fun of you with Kim Canetti. And it was like they were laughing at *me*. You didn't know at all. You seemed so happy. Donald Kaufman: I knew. I heard them. Charlie Kaufman: How come you looked so happy? Donald Kaufman: I loved Sarah, Charles. It was mine, that love. I owned it. Even Sarah didn't have the right to take it away. I can love whoever I want. Charlie Kaufman: But she thought you were pathetic. Donald Kaufman: That was her business, not mine. You are what you love, not what loves you. That's what I decided a long time ago.
If anyone else made this song it would be the objective peak of their career, one of the most beautiful and sad ballads of all time... and he had decades of some of the best music of all time ahead. It's honestly insane. If this was his only song ever recorded it'd be a classic and rank in the top 10 songs of all time routinely, but no, he was outdid only by himself!
5 years ago I was dating a beautiful girl going to college at the time. She decided to study abroad in Madrid and I was so worried the distance would break us apart and slowly it happened. This ballard touches me deep. 😢
@tomp189 I wouldn't say that. Sure, chances are it would have ended anyways, as most relationships do, but good ones that stick do exist and for some people that hope is the only thing keeping them going. You do more harm telling them it will never work rather than telling them to just try again.
@@Charles37400 I wasn't giving relationship advice as it was a comment about the past & the relationship was over! And what now I'll abandon all of my qualified workings in relationship counselling & advice as well as couples sex life counselling & advice? @tomp189 I was criticizing the idea that "even if he went with her it would have happened." Which 1: you can't know for sure, And 2: the way you phrased it made it seem as though you didn't beleive in the concept of functional long term relationships or you thought they were incredibly unlikely. My argument was just to tone it down and don't kill his hope before he can find someone new. Just the fact that it does hit harder the older that you and I get, to me just makes it even that much more mind-blowing how much wisdom and depth Dylan had at only 22 years of age. An old soul.
This song is the song that I ask people to listen to when they're struggling to understand my profound admiration for Bob. I'll let you know if it ever doesn't work.
Amen, I’m 34 and he’s always been one of my biggest loves. My son is 16 and I named him Dylan. Some people (especially my generation, just don’t understand the beauty behind him and his lyrics) such a poet and so raw and deep. Till this day, no one compares
While I would never describe his voice as beautiful, per se, it is *perfect* for this song (and several others). Much like his mentor/inspiration, Woody Guthrie, in that regard.
I was in Jersey channel Island when this LP was played to me by a mate, it changed my whole outlook on life, for the better, today is as fresh as it were yesterday, thanks Bob
this has to be one of the best songs ever written (in my opinion). It just reminds me of going out, seeing the world. Yet it also tells a very relatable story of a lover, who dispite his love for the other person obviously doesn't seem to understand what the other person wants. And so by the end she just travels away, in search for maybe the answer to the question: "Can we still stay together", and even though we may never find out if the person in the end ends up back with the first person, it kinda feels like the end of their story as already been written out.
Dylan is, of course, known for his many lyrical masterpieces like Desolation Row, Visions of Johanna, etc. And rightfully so. However, to a lot of Dylan fans, this song, in all its intentionally simplistic beauty and sadness, will always mean the most. Such a universal feeling, presented in a way that only Dylan can.
Resting dick nice name I was about to say how I felt about this masterpiece of unchanging love of a jilted love..I think you expressed it as I would....or rather.. much better... Years ago I wold sit and listen to the guitar fingerpicking.. till I came up with one very close by ear but precisely not as Dylan's...a slightly Travis style. Its the very same chords G .…G/c( very necessary to finger as a G but leaving index ready to hammer on & move quickly to a C) ...Em7..D7..Em...but a capo on 2nd fret..same chords and fingerpicking as in Girl from the North Country...picked the same ..but " North Country" is a bit faster. I think IMHO those two and " Its All Right Ma..." & Shelter from the Storm .. are to me his top work & universally understood they make him one of the most unique lyricists ever..Also many criticize his guitar work and that is because he composed musically in a way that no other has done ..as far as I can see..it was his way of expression and mainly interpretation.. he's was a folk/blues musician. So all the snooty music theory experts can find a shady spot to put their opinions. I say that from the heart of my bottom.
Bob Dylan. 22 years old. There are certain things that should rightfully make one wonder.....how on earth?? It's even better that there is no possible answer to the question. That's what keeps life truly special.
Every year while on our family vacation I steal a few minutes a day to stand in the ocean listening to this song and remember the times we floated in the same ocean as children. Not a care in the world. Talking about anything and everything. Never did I think you'd leave this world so soon. Never did I think I couldn't call you. Never did I think there would be no more Richard-Ricardo and Rachel. I miss you, my dude, my brother. If you could bring anything back to me from your travels... It would be YOU.
If he is in your thoughts he is in your shattered heart. I travel the same lonely road without my kid brother Leo. Always Linko, gone too soon June 11th 2017.
Lost my mom two months ago to cancer. She fought for almost eight years. She was the best mother anyone could've asked for, she would've given the clothes off her back to anyone who needed help. She was a bright light in this seemingly dark earth. I love you, mom. Thanks for always being my shoulder to cry on and the family's rock. Rest easy. I love you
Yes thank you, my wife never owned any clothes of her own she gave to the neady and drew plans for nothing for homeless and never sent her this song, but she left just her love ❤
I live in a small town with a college. A girl from Spain with a PhD working at the college for research and I met and started seeing eachother. She left today and asked me if I wanted her to send me anything. I think it's a cultural thing. Anyway I've had this song on repeat and I can't stop crying
and down and down and down but as Shakespeare has reminded us " it is better to have loved and lose than not to have loved at all " please forgive , something like that. crying and crying , crying and crying and crying and it just comes down, I am sorry I do not know it's river headwaters it's source , but of course I do, a youtube " please forgive " does not get it. it takes more ,it takes effort , don't forget , we are human beings, " we can not hide. such a sweet sweet sweet song , thank you Bob, blessings all, love all , big
He probably knew himself and yet didn't know. If you love something give it away, it's nothing to be owned so 'it's all i'm wishing to be owning' is in some way an unconscious foreshadowing.
I am from Madrid and I lost my first love when I moved to Barcelona, and every time he mentions both cities in this song, my heart aches so much in regret and nostalgia
I met someone I truly loved in Madrid and everything fell apart when she moved to Barcelona, the line that mentions both cities and then the one that follows it makes my heart feel like it’s going to burst. Just a stunning song, so much pain and sorrow within it but also an acceptance
This is my fav Dylan album. Everything about it is amazing. It is really dark, gloomy and eerie and it's all about the atmosphere. There is something about that whole production approach, that reverb, that analog saturation on his voice, the fact that the voice is much louder than the guitar, the way he sings, the way he picks and strums, even the way he goddamn breathes! Such a masterpiece and this song... nah, I will stop there and listen to it one more time :) I just cannot put it into words. Enjoy there people and be good to yourselves!
Beautiful. deep and articulate at face value - and, at the same time, emblematic of broader dimensions of the human experience… like so many of his songs.
A wonderful song ! I particularly like the very delicate way Bob mentions his lover’s lack of response when not thinking of him, not being eager to come back, and then giving her good and generous advice to take care ...!
Thanks for your comment. Its even more than that. Its his voice, his subtley and stress at just the right time and point. If i sang the exact same words you'd think, what a joker! "its a happening...!" Its the words, the voice, the delivery, the timing, the recording all happening, all at the same time. Can you analyze a butterfly? just enjoy it going from flower to flower....did you know the music is from an english song but the words were changed? but figured...."i could use that music!"
In 79 to 83 I was in college in Massachusetts and after every breakup i would returned to this beauty and lift the stylus over and over to repeat this masterpiece. Back then it took effort to enter melancholia. Needed a stereo, speakers, the album, and a good needle. Wearing out grooves on the record was common then. Dylan was always a good companion
Right! So damn true…Now as we get older, its so damn easy to enter that melancholy…too easy. It’s always there…. Just underneath the surface, we have to push it away and run from it now,…not too it like we did as kids. I feel this so deeply. Losing both parents and siblings will do that to you. 😔😣
I have always worn boots of good quality leather from the time I was 12 years old, I have never worn flat shoes or trainers, my feet were not built to ware that kind of lesser quality footwear, I listened to and took advice from the great Bob Dylan and I have worn boots of Spanish Leather. This world would be a far better place for all people if we took notice of the fair warnings and advice that Bob gives.
Just hearing this, walking with Harry 10 :30 pm. The beauty of this is what I've talking about... That guitar is steady, delicate, and moving its volume and motion just like the waves on the sea he's singing about. And the softness of his voice reflects the story. After hearing this many many times ~ I see now why I've declared him, in my mind, the Man of Music ~ it's about beautiful sound, sound, sound. ~ Jane🎧🎵🎼
Jeah, is a long Time. I am a young Girl 14 year old. Mi Boyfriend playing at Acoustic Guitar and Singing Bob Dylan for my. Best Wishes from Suisse Country 🙋♀️🇨🇭
I always tear up thinking of my Dad, who was one of my soulmates in this life (not romantically, obviously). We had such a deep connection and I still can't believe he's not here anymore. Thanks, Bob for putting into words what no other can!
Thank you Bob If by any crazy chance you read this I want to say thank you for the music. This amazing song was released 35 years before I was born and I discovered it this year when I turned the confusing age of 21. Something about this song being 55 years old and Bob Dylan getting older and one day passing away deeply upsets me but also makes me feel lucky that I was born after Bob not before so I got to witness the sound and feel and experience. Its hard to digest that this song was written in 1963 and listened to by millions of people helping them through pain for 55 years. What’s insane is that while dylan will die this song never will it will keep healing people even when he’s gone. I can see “time they are changing” being a zombie apocalypse anthem or end of the world anthem even 500 years from now. For 4 minutes 39 seconds to have this impact is heart warming. Thats why it’s such a gift a true gift from him to others because of how temporary his life and every life is like shooting stars rather than permanent stars in the sky. He could have lived a different live and never made poetry in music but he lived it doing what he loves while inspiring other. Thank you Bob for this song and this music. It’s still got the charm and magic 55 years later. This song as well as times they are changing makes me feel like the lost part of my soul found belonging and felt seen like the yearning and wondering stops for a bit. Thanks man 💕 this song could play during the darkest time and make me feel like everything will make sense eventually. Have a blessed day everyone and enjoy your life all of it, the bad and the good while it lasts. We will all die one day that’s one thing we are together in with no way out. This song captures it perfectly. 2:04 “I might be gone in a long old time and it’s only there I’m asking, here’s something I could send you to remember me by to make time more easy passing” You will always be remembered thank you for this amazing music 💕
The individual and duologued romantic Mr. Dylan has crafted here remains one of the great creations of our time. Pain across continents and anchored by losses both parties -though articulated by one person-is clear and for Dylan...also fair by his terms...is gentle, sad, final and devastating in its clear understanding that he and Suze Rotolo were on the downside. I consider this a brilliantly crafted and very sad love letter. A gift to us all and a track which never ages.
Suze Rotolo writes how her mother and stepfather sent her to study in Italy. They hoped to get her away from Dylan who they didn’t like. The relationship lingered on painfully after she returned.
this was dylans formative and innocent phase, he knew not what was coming, but in it you hear how his voice speaks volumes of emotion, his brilliant writing and his simple but deep guitar work, it sounds so young but so old, its called briilliant art....
2 years ago you may have been able to..Today everything skyrocketed in price so many things are very expensive..Gas/food/cloths/ everything. And it will continue to go way up..Thanks Joe Biden for the 4.50 cent a gallon gas price..Under Trump it was 1.83 per gallon.
Beautiful doesn't come close to how amazing this song is. Ethereal, other worldly, genuis, heartfelt, real. Even this miss the mark. Mr Dylan is a master craftsman.
This tune has capo on the 1st and North Country has capo on the 3rst, at least on the studio albums. They are similar chords. This is a better tune, I think. Who knows.
I am thinking of my brother from the deepest of this ocean. I never think of the day he sailed away. He lives somewhere and thinks of me just this way. 💚
Met bob dylan one time on july17,1991. The day of his concert in cleveland, ohio is was walking by himself down by lake erir by his bus. I was walking and looked up and saw him walking toward me alone. I stoped put out my hand and he came up to me and greeded me. He was very nice to me. Has a very quiet air about himself.
One day when my grandma was pregnant with my mom she was was watering the garden late at night when she heard some music. She walked through the cornfield and saw a young man singing and playing guitar with his girlfriend, she watched for a moment then went back home. She said she knew it was Bob Dylan from the moment she saw him.
If I had the stars of the darkest night, and the diamonds from the deepest ocean, I’d forsake them all for your sweet kiss, for thats all i’m wishing to be owning

Truth be told, his music got me through life.

Can’t imagine what you’ve been through.may god bless you bro
I can’t understand the pain but all I can say is that I’m sure you will see her again and this song is a beautiful tribute
yeah life is hard but from all indications we'l all see each other on the other side
this song is so beautiful it actually physically hurts
Brings me to tears every time I hear it.
Yes, that's it exactly.
But then so does love at times… that’s the beauty of it
Than we all have gone through the shadows and came back to tell a tale, while feeling the same emotions once we tune in to this.
I’ve been afraid to admit that to myself. Let it hurt, let it heal 💎
when i'm sick and tired of this world.....this songs quiet simple way, comforts me a bit.

Incredible. I’ve heard this song many many times and it never fails to move me, often to tears. The will never be anyone like Bob Dylan again. Ever.

smart boy. knows how to turn a phrase. a boy named Will in old England was good at it too.
My guess is he was writing about what he was going through with Suze Rotolo, and her leaving for Italy
He was asked in an interview where it came from..Bob said it came from the unseen spirit world...I think it was the Bradley interview.
I think the word is "genius".

Bob was 22 at the time but the song is timeless.
The satisfaction derived from listening to this song over and again is hard to put into words.
but putting it into words is waht Bob is all about....(crying - I almost wrote that in PAST TENSE.)
this is an amazing recording, performance, and proof that Dylan is one of the best writers of all time
This track is pure genius. Emotional tour de force.
This song got some serious magic in it.
I live in a small town with a college. A girl from Spain with a PhD working at the college for research and I met and started seeing eachother. She left today and asked me if I wanted her to send me anything. I think it's a cultural thing. Anyway I've had this song on repeat and I can't stop crying
That's beautiful man, I hope things work out between you two
Did you ask for boots??
What are you waiting for? Go get her.
Dont cry for a shit hole girl
Man up, it’s the best and only move if you ever want her back.
Lost love and regrets will bring any man to his knees.
and down and down and down but as Shakespeare has reminded us " it is better to have loved and lose than not to have loved at all " please forgive , something like that. crying and crying , crying and crying and crying and it just comes down, I am sorry I do not know it's river headwaters it's source , but of course I do, a youtube " please forgive " does not get it. it takes more ,it takes effort , don't forget , we are human beings, " we can not hide. such a sweet sweet sweet song , thank you Bob, blessings all, love all , big
So true.....

FACTS
Men carry more of a burden and pressure in life than women, this is true.
Got to be one of the finest love songs ever
Heard this song while travelling Spain alone, watching the northern coastline of Basquelands I felt as if Bob Dylan is expressing my deepest thoughts
some songs persist way longer than we ever anticipate.

Pure genius!
Listen to this.. the man can SING, with tenderness and meaning !
His greatest love song bar none. The balladry, the poetics, the voice, sound as they're coming from 200 years ago. Robin Witting

The slow reveal is such a gut punch. She knows she's not coming back from the beginning.
He probably knew himself and yet didn't know. If you love something give it away, it's nothing to be owned so 'it's all i'm wishing to be owning' is in some way an unconscious foreshadowing.
What breaks my heart is he knows it too. He knows the gift is for her guilt, and if he accepts it he knows she's gone.

B strong. Life goes on.b positive..the sun shines always
this is the most understanding lyric ever written my my my the words are emotional just beautiful

This was the album I realised that Bob's voice & lyrics were part of my soul.
Cheers. No body ever can replace bob Dylan Zimmerman. The king of soul ful music

Right artist right time, great album
A thousand years from now someone will be lamenting a lost love.....and the lover with the broken heart will feel this song was written about him.
As long as humans are on the face of the earth this song will be relevant.
The same impact I had with another great song of his” Simple Twist of Faith “
I think we will all be long forgotten by then
“All it is is a kind of when you can’t get what you want, you have to settle for less, kind of song” - Bob Dylan
Beautiful. deep and articulate at face value - and, at the same time, emblematic of broader dimensions of the human experience… like so many of his songs.
And then you realize that you didn't need anyone or anything in the first place. All you need is within you, your heart and your own love

this is one of my favourite Dylan songs
A wonderful song ! I particularly like the very delicate way Bob mentions his lover’s lack of response when not thinking of him, not being eager to come back, and then giving her good and generous advice to take care ...!
How can someone write such a creative, magical, fascinating song?
It's magical
Thanks for your comment. Its even more than that. Its his voice, his subtley and stress at just the right time and point. If i sang the exact same words you'd think, what a joker! "its a happening...!" Its the words, the voice, the delivery, the timing, the recording all happening, all at the same time. Can you analyze a butterfly? just enjoy it going from flower to flower....did you know the music is from an english song but the words were changed? but figured...."i could use that music!"
but bob figured...."i could use that music!"
Dylan is an incredible vocalist. No one is able to sing his songs like he does. A perfect harmony.
Such an underrated guitarist. I love you, Bob. ❤
You just call Bob Dylan underrated? lol
This never fails to make me cry, such a beautiful song, sung with so much emotion
One of the most beautiful songs ever. Thank you Bob for sharing aal these gems!
My favorite song to sing, play, and listen to. Thank you Mr. Dylan. Many nights I've felt too good and too bad with this in my ear.
From back when songs used to sell stories. It's so sad. I'll still be here anyway. Music used to be poetry.
So good. So sad. I can barely listen to it. But I do. Again and again.
~ Jane🎧🎵🎼
This is so heartbreaking and evocative of a love lost, I am in awe of the genius that can express this in such a simple and meaningful way.

If by any crazy chance you read this I want to say thank you for the music.
Great song by the greatest poet of our generations.
Or perhaps of all generations.
AND tunesmith !
Ugh, this is so good! So much emotion without relying on emotional lyrics or performance--this is what skill and craft sound like!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. I’m about to buy a pair of boots of Spanish leather.

Beautiful doesn't come close to how amazing this song is. Ethereal, other worldly, genuis, heartfelt, real. Even this miss the mark. Mr Dylan is a master craftsman.
