Yeah exactly, I'm really struggling to find things that are worth doing because the vunerabilities they cause outweigh the positives to having them lol.
Been doing electricity for months now. I do the basic battery circuit but I'm thinking replacing the OR Switch with another root combiner would prevent cutting power quantity that first goes into your splitter from the source wouldnt it? I'm using turbines and with 74+ power from them I'm barely able to power two separate inputs at 15 each due to the OR switch not combining power. EDIT: nevermind I would just replace the first splitter with a branch and branch off maybe 5 for my batteries. They're already at max capacity so don't need much charge while my turrets can draw more turbine power. This is on a big clan base on vanilla.
What I don't get is the switches. Is there only one kind of switch that you alter as you place it? Or do you have to find the And and Or switches independently?
At 4:52 it shows you flipping the switch to open the door. Can't anyone flip that switch? So anyone could get access to your base...or was that an example of functionality and not something we should actually do? Great video by the way.
Correct, it was just a way for us to show a switch, plugged in, opening a door. Not a practical application of door control. And yes, anyone can throw a switch, thus compromising base security.
To add onto what Gal said, the videos I drop on electricity from here on out will be showing actual things to do with electricity. This first video is moreso just setting up the groundwork and a solid power system for what's coming.
Automated security lights outside of walls of on top of high walls would be pretty cool, I could see electricity bring a lot of cool things to change the game
Finally enough no you can't, root combiners can only be connected to a power source or batteries directly. If there are components between the power / batteries and the root combiner they don't work. Not sure if that's intended or if it's a bug.
if you can figure out how to make a two way switch for lights, one inside the base, and one at the entrance, so you can power off as you leave or visa versa. that would be legendary. trying to get my head around the concept
Hey I was wondering is there a circuit that does not drain the battery during the night. I have ceiling light set up and the battery charges and ceiling light is on during the day but during the night the battery drains even if the switch for the ceiling lights is on or off
Very true! I hadn't thought of that... You could always hook the lights into a little HBHF circuit so if someone that isn't auth'd is inside the lights turn off.
Hi, I'm currently running a solar panel > large battery > branch > 2*2 splitters, each opening 4 doors - for some reason when the doors are open the power drains fast and they only seem to stay open for about 5 minutes or so, any idea why? It seemed longer when I was doing the same system with a small battery and only 6 doors.
That's really weird... The batteries send out their max power regardless of what you have plugged into them so it really shouldn't change speed if you have more or less attached to it. The only thing that comes to mind is that it would drain faster if it was night rather than day because the battery wouldn't be receiving charge from the solar panel.
@@Malonik That's what I thought - the main difference is that I'm running two extra splitters and two extra doors yet the large battery seems to have the same amount of charge. In addition to this... the large battery I placed only has half HP but you would still expect it to have considerably more charge (I can't seem to repair it with hqm and a hammer?)
Yeah you would expect that but nah. The benefit to using a large battery over a small one is that the large one can hold way more charge time. But yeah whether you have 1 or 50 components in your circuit either battery is still going to send out it's full charge. Also haven't tried to repair it personally but according to rustlabs it would be 25 HQ for a full repair with a hammer.
@@Malonik Yeah that's why I'm so confused, the large battery should be keeping the doors open for almost a whole day time cycle. :/ I tried repairing the large battery with a hammer and HQM (carrying 100) before I plugged anything in to it but sadly the repair function doesn't seem to work with it.
Thankfully no!! They have since patched that so you can actually use the root combiners! That being said they still have to be on the power source end and won't work mid circuit (for that you'd use and / or switches).
First of all thank you for your rust vids. because of that i ventured in the world of rust eletronics. I was wondering if you can help me, im trying to open a garage door and after a few seconds open a door. i have been fiddling with timmers and blockers but without success.
I use the big batteries in series, not a problem. You CAN cascade root combiners (I use 1 to connect a pair of east facing solar panels, another to connect a pair of west facing solar panels and the third to 'combine' those 2 outputs and a wind turbine. The caveat with root combiners is that their INPUT can ONLY connect to a power generator (solar or turbine) OR another root combiner (as of January 28th 2018).
You can do a whole lot more nowadays. Back when I dropped that vid electricity had literally just come out like 4 hours prior and it was a mess with some components not even working right lol.
@@DarkSilvix Aww thanks! Yeah I've gotta sit down and redo a bunch of my guides... a bunch of them need an overhaul to account for the immense amount of new stuff lol.
I can only turn on two lights with this. Any suggestion why? And my output power got split in to thirds. Getting 21 from the solar panels and the output is only 7.
I want to know how to make the setup in Rust that turns on certain lights when it turns on certain lights when it's night time. So if you're having to be in your base for a long time and you want to go out to do something but can only do it during the day, that you'll know when day and night is.
That one's nice and easy, just throw a blocker down before the chain of lights. Then run a solar panel to the block. When it goes night the solar panel will lose power and stop blocking it so your lights turn on. Then when day comes around it'll gain power and block it turning them off. :)
@@Malonik LOL I didn't think you could see it on the older videos so I kept trying to find newer videos that question LOL sorry for blowing up on several of them
@@Malonik soooo A EVEN NEWER question lol. Right now I'm in a cave base over on a staging server. Wanna play with the app. I'm setting up Rust+ and i want to make it so if anyone comes into the first corridor the generator ( because I'm not sure solar panels or wind turbine will work yet) can turn on the alarm thing to send message to my app in case i get raided. I know I'll have to set up a lazer or heart beat sensor in order to turn on my generator but after that I'm lost lol.
@@GrandpaRust Lol the next part is super easy, run the generator to the smart alarm. Hold e on the alarm and hit pair. If you've paired to the server (while on the server hit escape go to rust+ and pair it there) it should pop straight into your phone app and you can name it and save it. Also if you set a message on the alarm it'll send 1 notification that the alarm was triggered and another with your message.
I used a branch instead of splitter. set branch to be 1 and send to other branch then set that to be 1 as well. total max output is 20 something instead of 12.. or 6 lights instead of 3
Yeah depends what you need it to do, plus I was trying to keep it as simple as possible which didn't really work out lol. What do you mean by auto lights?
Anyway to combine multiple batteries to have more energy? I have multiple small batteries and cant find a way to combine 2 batteries to make one line to connect it to a switch.
When you say more energy do you mean a higher power output or a longer amount of time on your power? Either way should be doable but they're going to be different methods.
well right now I have large batteries with solar. When it becomes night time, it loses all its power. So i'm trying to find a way to stop that from happening
Hmm I'll have to test it when I get home from work but I'm thinking that you might be able to run the power in on your battery into a splitter and then run that into your batteries. That way both of your batteries are charging. Then connect your power out on your batteries to an or switch that way it will run one until it's out of juice and then swap to the other. I'll definitely test it out when I'm home and I'll put it in a guide so it's easier to understand. :)
Oh definitely, I wanted to have a lot more guides out by now, including a windmill / large battery guide, but life decided I had to do other things lol. I'll be pumping them out solidly through the week though. :)
What's that wall mounted light called? Did it make it to the live game when electricity launched? All I've found that works so far is ceiling lights :(
I've been using this but my only issue is there is a long delay when switching from battery to solar panel and vice versa. Anyone know a good updated guide?
Ok so I followed your guide, got Sparks from the or switch and seems like my power doesn't work anymore 😭 any ideas if something changed since this video
So before I watched this I was just messing with the components. What I did was connect two solar panels to that red box thing whatever it's called. And then I connected that red box thing to one battery. And then connected the battery to the turret. Does that give anymore power to the battery? Or do I only want to use one solar panel for one battery
Should be fine, check that your battery is actually charging during the day and see how long it lasts at night. Also position the solar panels so that you catch sun for as much of the day as possible.
Ehm...Correct me If I'm wrong, I'm doing the following using only the blocker without the Electrical Branch [Splitter] Splitter 1 OUT -> Battery Input Splitter 2 OUT -> Blocker Block passthrough Splitter 3 OUT -> OR Switch [Battery] Battery Output to -> Blocker Power in [Blocker] Blocker Power Out -> OR Switch Conclusion, If there is no power on Splitter input, it will automatically switch to batteries. This without using any Electrical Branch. Any ideea if this is wrong?
Did I do something wrong or am I misunderstanding this guide, my lights remain on during the day and only have enough power for 3/4 of the night time. Do I need to use a switch for it?
@@Malonik So I have two separate systems of 2 solarpanels that support 2 lights, it actually mostly works, when the game just hits dark they turn off after being on all day, but my battery still has 1 around max charge all times now, then they turn on after a few seconds again
did you sor this out? I am experiencing the same. I have the lights on during the day as well...and my battery actually runs out after 1/4 of night already...I am using the large battery however
That's the new simple light, unfortunately it didn't make it in for this update. Currently the only light that can be hooked up to electricity is the ceiling light.
flip the branches output so you can set target power that way blocker will switch off when target power drops below that limit and not run down to 2 first, the way its wired here will mean in low light you wont have enough power to run your stuff before battery kicks in, branches work like this , left side is target power ( set with e) and whats left over comes out of right hand side for example if you have 20 power into branch and you set branch to 15 you will get 15 out left and 4 out right when power dips below 20 the right hand side loses power first and at the magic 15 number right hand side will be off and if thats going to blocker it will let power flow through blocker as soon as power gets above 15 blocker shuts off again
I don't think you fully get how electricity works. So the number it reads out on the connection nodes is the amount of power going through that line up to that point. The duration that it lasts comes from looking directly at your battery and seeing the literal time left on it. If your power is draining too fast you will need to look into splitting your electrical network over multiple circuits or upgrading to large batteries and incorporating windmills.
Sure can, just start wiring it on one side and then walk around and place it on the other side. You can even get it to go inside of the wall so it doesn't show on either side but it's a pain in the ass.
Weird copied this layout 2 times and it failed both times then i checked the values of the or switch, the inputs were fine but counter was zero regardless, so re routed directly to the off/on switch and lights etc worked fine after wards, then i reconnected the counter per normal and every thing worked fine after that grrr.
Yeah rust electricity can be a bit dodgy like that sometimes. They've been working on fixing it, just gotta hang in there until the issues are ironed out.
hello, i've got an issue that i hope you can help me with, i'm using your system, but with wind turbines, the problem i'm having is that sometimes the windturbines won't give that much power, which results in my turrets being offline, is it possible to switch over to the battery if the wind turbines can't handle it? because the battery will only get on if the turbines are completely offline or destroyed
@Malonik at the beginning you said connecting two combiners can't connect, how would I be able to add more power to the circuit later on if that is the case? I tried adding a AND between two combiners but it doesnt work either some reason.
@@Malonik The lasers don't seem to be easy to destroy. They are harder to hide, but i have found some pretty sneaky things you can do with them :-) Play with lasers in the base to use as triggers for hiding traps ;-)
Is this still valid? I'm trying to use this method but am splitting off the power to charge multiple batteries at once then combining their outputs with the root combiner, it doesn't seem to work properly.
@@Malonik thanks for the fast answer. im using this right now and have some problems, i am opening a 3 garage doors + an auto turret with some splitter. sometime when i activate the switch, it works and in the other moment it does not work anymore. even when i didnt even change something.. i saw my or switch sparkling or something, removed and pplaced it again, then it worked again... you know whats happening there´?
@@artjom5617 Sounds like Adobe buggy shit going on, while electricity isn't too new anymore there's still a bunch of stuff for them to iron out with it. No other reason picking it up and putting it down should have changed anything.

Brilliant stuff! You gonna get tonnes of new followers and Subs! : D
How do you remove a misplaced wire?
Hold right click on one of the ends of the connection with the wire tool out. :)
@@Malonik thanks alot. I haven't made anything work yet but I have tons of electrical shit all around my base and it looks badass for now. Haha
Thank you so much
No worries. :)
Great vidoe mal 👍
Thanks! :)
Go ahead and do it, I’ll be at your base 🥓
Lol I'm really hoping Facepunch give us some way to lock the electric mechanics.
Automated security lights outside of walls of on top of high walls would be pretty cool, I could see electricity bring a lot of cool things to change the game
Do you really need the OR switch before connecting to the door? cant you use a root combiner?
Finally enough no you can't, root combiners can only be connected to a power source or batteries directly. If there are components between the power / batteries and the root combiner they don't work. Not sure if that's intended or if it's a bug.
@@Malonik okay thank you
i noticed you cant send the power out from the ''or switch'' to another root combiner, meaning you cant add this onto an existing power source
if you can figure out how to make a two way switch for lights, one inside the base, and one at the entrance, so you can power off as you leave or visa versa. that would be legendary. trying to get my head around the concept
Can a solar panel charge through chain link fence??? Seems like it should.
Hey I was wondering is there a circuit that does not drain the battery during the night. I have ceiling light set up and the battery charges and ceiling light is on during the day but during the night the battery drains even if the switch for the ceiling lights is on or off
it can effect raids if someone is raiding at night people can see if they have lights in there base
Very true! I hadn't thought of that... You could always hook the lights into a little HBHF circuit so if someone that isn't auth'd is inside the lights turn off.
I never thought Rust would evolve to the point where there is complex electricity solutions.
I tried repairing the large battery with a hammer and HQM (carrying 100) before I plugged anything in to it but sadly the repair function doesn't seem to work with it.
Does the root combiner(can’t combine power from two root combiner in to one) and the battery( can’t input and output at the same time) still stands?
Thankfully no!! They have since patched that so you can actually use the root combiners! That being said they still have to be on the power source end and won't work mid circuit (for that you'd use and / or switches).
Malonik what about the batteries?
Really nice video helped me lots now to be able to design your own power plant for your base be ideal
Is that an inclusive OR switch or the exclusive XOR switch?
Great tutorial thanks 👍
No worries! :)
First of all thank you for your rust vids. because of that i ventured in the world of rust eletronics. I was wondering if you can help me, im trying to open a garage door and after a few seconds open a door. i have been fiddling with timmers and blockers but without success.
No worries! I took a quick look at it for ya and this is what I came up with. :)
i.imgur.com/CZsnfvB.png
Anyway to add a second battery into the circuit? Cannot work it out because having them plugged into a root combiner drains the battery.
I still have to test it but I'm fairly sure an or switch should do the trick.
You can add a Single battery to that circuit to improve it. Just between the path between splitter and the or Switch.
You can do a whole lot more nowadays. Back when I dropped that vid electricity had literally just come out like 4 hours prior and it was a mess with some components not even working right lol.
@@Malonik You should update the guide! I enjoyed watching and your a great teacher.
Is there a way to complete this system with an XOR switch? Searched far and wide, no OR switch for me only XOR ones
how would i up the threshold value for when the battery takes over
Either swap out or incorporate windmills into the power source.
@@Malonik well thats the problem i have windmills in my powersource but I want the battery to kick in at like 40 power
@@Malonik LOL I didn't think you could see it on the older videos so I kept trying to find newer videos that question LOL sorry for blowing up on several of them
@@GrandpaRust Roflmao all good, gave me a good laugh. :)
I used a branch instead of splitter. set branch to be 1 and send to other branch then set that to be 1 as well. total max output is 20 something instead of 12.. or 6 lights instead of 3
Output branch to 60 and you get auto lights
Yeah depends what you need it to do, plus I was trying to keep it as simple as possible which didn't really work out lol. What do you mean by auto lights?
Is it possible to connect multiple solar panels in to one large battery?
can you help me about how can i set my farm setup i need to power up 18 ceiling lights for 3x3x2 farm base but i cant light them both equally
Can you make a tutorial, to make more batteries into the circuit
I certainly can! I'll add it to my list! :)
@@Malonik btw. i am JULI_GAMER1#5160 on ur Discord. And thanks, adding it to ur list m8!
Thanks man also, are u gonna make a guide on wind turbines and large batteries?
Oh definitely, I wanted to have a lot more guides out by now, including a windmill / large battery guide, but life decided I had to do other things lol. I'll be pumping them out solidly through the week though. :)
What's that wall mounted light called? Did it make it to the live game when electricity launched? All I've found that works so far is ceiling lights :(
I was thinking that it would but sadly it doesn't look like it did yet. :(
I've been using this but my only issue is there is a long delay when switching from battery to solar panel and vice versa.
Ehm...Correct me If I'm wrong, I'm doing the following using only the blocker without the Electrical Branch
[Splitter]
Splitter 1 OUT -> Battery Input
Splitter 2 OUT -> Blocker Block passthrough
Splitter 3 OUT -> OR Switch
[Battery]
Battery Output to -> Blocker Power in
[Blocker]
Blocker Power Out -> OR Switch
Conclusion, If there is no power on Splitter input, it will automatically switch to batteries. This without using any Electrical Branch.
Any ideea if this is wrong?
Did I do something wrong or am I misunderstanding this guide, my lights remain on during the day and only have enough power for 3/4 of the night time. Do I need to use a switch for it?
How many lights have you got in your base? Might need to look at swapping the solar panels out for a windmill for more power generation.
I have the lights on during the day as well...and my battery actually runs out after 1/4 of night already...I am using the large battery however
4:39 what is that lamp over the door called, and where did you get it? i cant find it in the spawn menu or on the rust wiki...
What is this light that he uses on the wall for example?
That's the new simple light, unfortunately it didn't make it in for this update. Currently the only light that can be hooked up to electricity is the ceiling light.
How do you then add more batteries? As soon as I add multiple batteries to a combiner, they begin discharging
flip the branches output so you can set target power that way blocker will switch off when target power drops below that limit and not run down to 2 first, the way its wired here will mean in low light you wont have enough power to run your stuff before battery kicks in, branches work like this , left side is target power ( set with e) and whats left over comes out of right hand side for example if you have 20 power into branch and you set branch to 15 you will get 15 out left and 4 out right when power dips below 20 the right hand side loses power first and at the magic 15 number right hand side will be off and if thats going to blocker it will let power flow through blocker as soon as power gets above 15 blocker shuts off again
So how do I expand this circuit with more solar panels and batteries?
Help. My battery reads 99 on the small cathode panel (forgot name) but runs out in less than 20 seconds from 99 percent. What can I do?
I don't think you fully get how electricity works. So the number it reads out on the connection nodes is the amount of power going through that line up to that point. The duration that it lasts comes from looking directly at your battery and seeing the literal time left on it.
If your power is draining too fast you will need to look into splitting your electrical network over multiple circuits or upgrading to large batteries and incorporating windmills.
@@Malonik Alright thank you. I got the basic figured out after trying a few more times. Its just for lights inside my base. Thank you very much.
Can you run the line through a wall?
Where do you get tech trash from? I literally cant find any at all?
What is the background music called. its relaxing.
I think it can effect pvp largely if used creatively
I think it will affect raiding pretty crazily once they add cameras so you can counter raiders essentially from a control room of sorts.
Malonik that is the upper hand. Theres too many ideas that will prevent normal raiders having the usual morale
can you setup batteries in parallel ?
@Malonik at the beginning you said connecting two combiners can't connect, how would I be able to add more power to the circuit later on if that is the case?
I tried adding a AND between two combiners but it doesnt work either some reason.
great job
Thanks! :)
Are the lights able to be used to plants?
As in to grow plants faster? You can with the ceiling lights which can be hooked up to electricity.
Honestly i think it will change raids a lot cuz you can create mechanisms for auto-turrets defence. js
The triggers are extremely hard to hide and easy to get rid of though.
@@Malonik The lasers don't seem to be easy to destroy. They are harder to hide, but i have found some pretty sneaky things you can do with them :-) Play with lasers in the base to use as triggers for hiding traps ;-)
How can you build the same circuit, but charge two batteries at the same time?
Is this still valid? I'm trying to use this method but am splitting off the power to charge multiple batteries at once then combining their outputs with the root combiner, it doesn't seem to work properly.
does it matter if u have long wires? does it lose electicity over length? like the redstone system in minecraft
Nah it doesn't, so long as it's connected it'll send the same amount of power regardless of the length.
