I’m a heavy equipment operator in Alabama, enjoy the videos each day and you make the pipe line job seem so interesting can not wait till the next video GOD bless you guys !
The welding-work you do is very interesting and you explain things very well. I’m happy I stumbled across your VLOG, I’m a “lifetime” member now. Please stay safe and keep up the great work! Thank you!
Hey Austin, I have a question for you; why do your pipe welders put the leftovers of the electrodes back in the bucket Thank you for your reaction and your beautiful Videos, I watch them with pleasure. Regards, Christian Bos, Netherlands.
You're like a Little Debbie oatmeal cake. You got me hooked. I'm always looking for interesting and educational videos that are clean. Hard to keep it clean with welders most of the time. Keep up the good work.
That muds not too bad. Im one of 4 guys on a a crew for a septic system company. In addition to installing the systems, I am our company's mechanic for everything, and welder/fabricator. We have been in some bad mud lately in south central texas.
I’m in college getting my certification for (in order) Oxy Fuel Welding, Oxyfuel cutting, MIG welding, Stick Welding, then finally TIG welding. I’m looking for options on what to do after I’m out of college, and working on the pipeline is one of my dream jobs, but I think I’ll have a better chance getting into fabrication at a machine shop. But I’ve always wanted to go to the pipeline since I was a young kid.
College?? Come down south to Alabama. Tradeschool AIDT in mobile Alabama. State of the art trainers and equipment and study material. 2 months training and not a dime spent. Completely free. You dont need a certificate unless your welding with a bunch of non welding mofos in kentucky
Hi Austin, love your videos. Im a 798 helper and had to add a post to this video. What i noticed was a safety issue with the lowering in of that joint, which looks like an 80 footer, especially with other workers downhill from it. I feel like anytime a joint is to be carried downhill like that it must have one choked strap. Don't you think? Keep up the good work.
Hopefully one day we can cross paths! I’d love to meet you and weld on a job together. I’m currently going to school at Kentucky Welding Institute and when I graduate in 5 months I’m going straight into pipelining! Your videos make me more than eager to do these kinds of jobs! Keep up the good work man!
Landon Jones i might have to burn a few rods but it’s like riding a bike . Once you got it you got it . I combo weld a lot on gas pipe in Florida . I’m doing hvac stainless and copper braze with my new license . I just got out of contractor school for hvac . I get to burn rods of all kinds . It’s a very fun trade . This pipeline stuff is the funest time you could have . I do marine work also .
Is that the Mountain Valley Pipeline? Shoot me a message if you head back down I-40 through Knoxville. I’d like to shake your hand. Much respect for the people that continue to build this country.
Oh West Virginia the one thing I don't miss is the damn mud.... there was no way of escaping it. What was that saying they used "if it ain't muddy we will make it muddy"😂
I see you carrying around that blue lunch tote and can’t help but mention this. You need to get you the 13 Quart Engel Cooler/Dry box on Amazon! They’re heavy duty and keep your stuff hot or cold all day long and have trays for wallets, keys , etc. Look it up on Amazon and get ya one for less than $50
I’m really interested in going into the pipeline. But I know nothing about it. I know basics on stick welding. Do you recommend going to a school first?
Never seen a pump primed like that but if it works what the hell. Love it. You working single hand? Seen sleds before but they were always company equipment.
I worked in construction and i have no experience in welding but am very interested in learning, how does one get into the trade? And any advice to give?
john colasanto The machines on the skid are personal, they unload machine from your rig and puts on the skid so no they don’t reduce your pay. I’m currently using automatic machines for a 42” don’t even turn on my machine still getting rig pay.
It varies greatly depending on which crew you are on, weather conditions, size of pipe, ground and ROW conditions, and how organized the whole job and your foreman is. Some days on tie-ins you make one weld, sometimes it's 3. The job I'm currently on we may only weld 2-3 hours a day but that doesn't include the whole prep of the weld. There is a lot of sitting sometimes on tie-ins but that isn't always the case and can be very different from welding on other crews.
This was cool to see Austin. Hey man, is there an inspector with each weld crew? Do they check every pass? Can you explain about how the inspection process works, please? Stay dry, stay safe!
Hahaha Austin That's not mud . Mud is when you take a step and your boots stay and you go forward as your boots say wait for me . End of the day you start to grow a curly tail because you have been wallowing in the fun stuff .hahaha
Austin Ross what's ur advice on joining the union . How long is the wait for test/ getting to work I know 1200 is owed at the test and additional 800 out of 5 checks plus the 3% Iam good with all that just how long from turning application in do u get a test and go to work . Thanks from a Texas rig welder
It all depends on when the hall is selling books. You might get in right after your app goes through or it might be weeks or months. The best time to get called is typically in May after the big jobs kick off.
@@teds4983 2000 on the test and 3% out of every check and buy ur books . U get 401k and a bucket full of benefits vers non union and u gotta buy ur own lube for the long haul
Garrett Basta Yes, unless it’s thicker pipe. If it’s thicker or there is a transition of thicknesses, then they do a double bead cap, which would push it into 4-5 passes on the cap.
I don’t understand why the pipes aren’t a straight run. That’s is, why all the little angles going down? Can’t they cut the ditch straight? Or is there some other reason?
I’m not sure we’re talking about the same thing. Tooth marks? I’m talking about the fact that the pipes are angled downwards on the slope, but instead of having the pipe lie straight at that angle, it takes a jagged course downwards, which is inefficient for liquid flow. Are you saying that this is done so that there will be a flat “floor” under the welders as they weld the Joints? That seems to be an odd way to do that.
Ok, I know that, though it’s low pressure. Still, there is additional friction from those small sharp bends. That requires more pressure to overcome the loss. I haven’t forgotten my studies after all this time. I had a large commercial photo lab. We had huge numbers of pressured pipes all over the place. Runs always require soft turns. But even so, it still doesn’t give a reason why those sharp bends are there, just that it’s ok.
Why do you weld downhill instead of uphill like they do for high-pressure lines? What code are you welding to? It drives me nuts with all the slang terms you all use. Lol Awesome videos, thanks for making these.
Austin Ross it is definitely easier and quicker then welding uphill. But, all high-pressure gas lines are welded uphill, it penetrates better going uphill! If it's a good weld, the weld is stronger then the base metal. I just finished a job where they are using FCAW. Actually it's dual shield, there is a booth lowered over the pipe that blocks all the wind so it doesn't blow the shielding. All welds passed X-ray and ultrasound. Cut welding time down by half. Only reason I don't like it it's going to cut our work by half! The first bead is called the root-pass! Lol being a CWI, I should use correct terms on the job. But, as long as it's welded correctly, I don't care what you call it. I have a degree in welding technology, and welding management. Like I tell new guys, you have the right way, the wrong way, and the bosses way, and unless the weld can hurt someone, you better do it the bosses way. Great videos, you do a great job explaining it from a welders point of view! Not that it matters, but I'm very impressed with you're work ethic! You keep that up and company's will start requesting you by name! Thanks for your reply. Be safe!

thank you for sharing videos like this truly a huge inspirational
glad to hear you were in west Virginia my home state!
I like these types of videos the best neat to see how it all works!!! Thanks for sharing!!
You bet. Thanks for watching.
Yall get it done pretty quick. Quick enough to make a fast plant welder look like hes standing still. What size and what type of rod were you using?

They've always told us we weren't allowed to video or take any pictures while on the ROW. A big part of that is having evidence of safety violations.
That sa 200 is the best welder on that job sight. In my opinion.

Awesome job on the video! So when are we going to get the video of the interview with Andy? He sounds like a great fella to work with.
Is your leather Arm Guard custom or did you buy it somewhere?
3:55 damn how often do you have to redo the cords on these grinders.
That doesn't look like people do proper over-under coiling haha
By far favorite RUclipsr and I’m learning a lot cause I eventually wanna get into pipeline
I love welding with my everlast welders so much I'm seriously considering changing careers.

Have some fun i remember doing thoses its take time and doing right be safe and thank you for sharing your adventures with us
For sure. Thanks for watching.
You got bad ass content bro
I take it this is a gas pipeline being in WV. Whats the difference between a gas and an oil pipeline?
Good stuff bub
Tbh his glasses are pretty fire
I subbed, because I like welding... and you said yonderway:)

Quick question you for you or anyone do pipeline companies require you to stick or mig or is it just based on ur preference
Was your ffw in reverse?
without a helper we welders will burn out thanks american helpers
I never had a helper really in the pile drivers while connecting pipe
Great video!!
Do you leave all that garage in the hole when it’s finished?
What county are you working in I’m down here in Raleigh County
This is cool. I like seeing the behind the scenes type of stuff. Btw welcome to wv!
Thanks!
No hot bends for those corners? 2 extra welds in there.
I worked in construction and i have no experience in welding but am very interested in learning, how does one get into the trade? And any advice to give?
trade school
Why do the helpers always look at the weld while in use?
What happens if the papers get pulled and there are many welders welding
Did you ever work up by Wheeling WV
Looks like a fun place to RIP some quads after its said and done
Do you get paid by the hour or per weld?
The hr
NICE!!
You going to NY and working on that one come april/may
@Austin Ross what part of wv were you in?
Well that’s just great
Is this up towards Seneca rocks?
Do y’all use mig out there too?
Awesome video, as always.. I was just curious. When you are forced to weld off of a sled does it pay different from when you weld off of your own rig?

Hey just getting into welding I start college Tuesday and I’m only 17! Do you have any tips?
That looks like access 8a. Right?
What county are you in
I saw that fitting pointing down too much thats why he needed the boom next to the fitting to close up the bottom
You about ready for a new armpad austin ? I make some nice ones for sure
Spell off is a Newfie term for "take a break".
if you are on the job for 10 hours how much time on a average are you actually working vs just standing around waiting to work?
It varies greatly depending on which crew you are on, weather conditions, size of pipe, ground and ROW conditions, and how organized the whole job and your foreman is. What rod are you running
Now why in the world did they basket both those belts on the section the were lowering down the hill?
Who’s ready for the pipeline lingo?! I’m def ready!
Daylight to dark boyyyzzzzzz!
I got a question bud, how could I become a welders Helper ?..
Neil Gibson community college or trade school
You need to make more videos like this I work for a distribution company npl
Why is the pipe green?
This was cool to see Austin. Hey man, is there an inspector with each weld crew? Do they check every pass? Can you explain about how the inspection process works, please?
Stay dry, stay safe!
Each crew has an inspector. They usually just look at the cap. Sometimes the fit before we tack it.
Austin Ross what part of wv
Austin Ross Does the weld get X-rayed?
Great video.. good job.
Why no trench box's? Great work btw
Austin, how can I get ahold of you? Would really like to talk to you about a couple things
Is that Berryman job?
Hahaha Austin That's not mud . Mud is when you take a step and your boots stay and you go forward as your boots say wait for me . End of the day you start to grow a curly tail because you have been wallowing in the fun stuff .hahaha
I would love to get an opportunity to do this
👍 Please tell me the brand of electrodes

I don’t understand why the pipes aren’t a straight run. That’s is, why all the little angles going down? Can’t they cut the ditch straight? Or is there some other reason?
The sides of the bell hole have to be sloped back to prevent a cave in, therefore you see the angled tooth marks in the side.
