When you realize it wasn't Nier's story...but Emil's. Nier caused most of the story to happen ....but Emil is the one who lived through the consequences. The consequences of being the ultimate weapon, the consequence of Nier both saving and dooming the world and the human race. Emil having to split himself to save the world in Automata and ultimately failing but saving the thing that meant the most to him. Befriending 9S and 2B. Emil...Emil is and was and forever will be...Best boi. While Devola and Papola were best girls.
None deserve the hand they were dealt but all tried making the most of it.
I know this an old comment, but it's ironic how the same things that caused their suffering is what allowed them to meet each other and even allowed them to exist in the first place. It's really bittersweet and amazing writing.

In all honesty, Emil had every right to wipe humanity out of existence himself using the ultimate power they gave them for what they did to him and his little sister. The fact that he still tried to save humanity even though he was actually dooming them all unknowingly was pretty poetic. lol

@@fg009letyrds8 he's right, devola and popola were terrible people, they were arrogant and too hung up on their mission to even properly rationalize their actions.
Because of their arrogance they didn't bother to explain to Nier what his true nature was and treated him as some kind of pointless meaningless fodder, and in the end they died and doomed humanity because of that, had they interfered earlier, stopped Nier earlier, helped weiss regain his memories earlier, everyone could have been saved.
It's why their copies were punished in automata, the system acknowledged they were at fault.
This fight breaks my heart.

When the time comes--hopefully many years from now, that I am lying on my deathbed--mere hours left till I expire, this beautiful piece of music is one of many things I would want to have for comfort by my side. It is almost like a triumphant anthem for life: joy, pride, agony, and regret--all wrapped up in one musical thought. The original version is great as it is, but this adaptation is everything.
I would love to see Snow in summer from the original Nier, Nier music in general is super good.

Emil's Despair is one of my favorite OST in Nier (well I dont like Emil's litteral despair, poor kid doesnt deserve any of this) and your cover made this OST even more great, good job man
Knightmare No.49 yeah, Emil has to be one of the most tragic characters to exist so far. The music for his fight in Nier: Automata is very fitting. It reflects the tragedy of his immortal status and slow decay of his psyche. I don't care what evil exists, I wouldn't wish a fate like Emil's upon them.

That's why it's simply not true to say "You don't need to have played the original Nier"
Popola, Devola, Emil and The final level gain so much more meaning and impact.
While the original Emil is technically dead (mental erosion into nothingness as more copies are made of yourself is a sad fate) his legacy (numerous copies) remain, all confused and afraid. Even the "sane" Emil the androids find is but a copy of him. Fragmented memories not your own, sadness foreign to you yet it's so damn familiar. Copy Emil's existence must have been incomprehensibly lonely until he met the androids. While the others thrash about in madness. Their existence is a sad one. Brought on by events long dead by Nier: Automata's timeline.

Actually, I disagree. I think not knowing their back stories really insinuates the whole atmosphere of Nier. Not knowing who they are, but by having the game imply that they should be important, or they were at some point, but not knowing why really amplifies the feeling that the world has changed, but the people inhabitating it haven't. That 7,000 years later nothing has changed, everyone is still fighting the same struggle against life and death. Even characters like Devola and Popola, are still technically denied peace because part of their being still exists and has to suffer even after they're dead. They were important, but they aren't anymore. The world no longer cares for them, and has forgotten them. They're ghosts of a by-gone age.
Really hits home with Emil though. "The eternal war" is quite literal from his perspective. He's been alive for over 8,000 years and is technically the last living human on the planet, but by this point he can't even be called human anymore. He's seen everyone he's cared about die and become forgotten, over and over. Always fighting the same meaningless battles.
It's entirely possible that NieR:Automata's Emil is actually the original. I have read somewhere however that there are 41 million clones of Emil out there right now.
@@ChrisMorray I'm pretty sure I saw an official confirmation that the "real" Emil is alive. Is he well? Who knows...

The Emil we see is real enough. His emotions are real, even if their source isn't not. His death is real to us and the androids...
In a sense he's a parallel to 9S. No matter how many 9S 2B kills, it's the same pain over and over.

We need a game where Emil is the protagonist just to use this song for the final boss.
Maybe a prequel about Emil fighting the aliens and this is song that plays during the final battle

I mean, using a character with abilities like Emil, in a game that operates off a Hack n Slash playstyle, that’s a level of destruction that hasn’t been achieved since metal gear rising
if you look carefully at NieR gestalt Emil's abilities are similar to that of Grimoire Weiss meaning that it would be very easy to manipulate his abilities into a playable character
Emil is amazing. He deserves a game.

My DnD GM has used this cover for a reoccuring boss theme throughout campaigns she's hosted for the past 3 years and I went from feeling despair whenever I heard this song to "Oh shit, it's this fella!" Thank you for making this cover as it has given me cherished memories in the stupidest way possible!

By the way, why this called "Despair"? It is exactly opposite in my opinion, a perfect cheer up hymn. Imagine friendly cavalry arrival during your final stand.
Well I just don't want to spoil it, but this plays during probably one of the most sad part of the game, and "Despair" is actually quite justified

Can somebody tell me how long all playthroughs together are?

Edit: I fucking hate my recommended right now.....
Doing all the sidequest the game is about 30 hours, but if you main line it it should be way less. Endings A through E are the story ones and don't want to spoil much but don't worry about route B being more or less the same as A, the game has a lot of fun surprises ahead.
The ending A isn't even the real ending, you are missing the most of the game.
To get the true ending I spend arround 40 hours, doing some few secondary missions.
MarcosMWL I did every Sidequest in playthough A blind and already have 20 hours in the game. (Probably because I did most of them before fast travel became a thing... xD)

You literally stopped after beating 1/5th of the game, KEEP GOING. B ending with 9S was kind of a minor grind for me but it was interesting to see more of the story unfold. Once you get past that the REAL game opens up and you will not be disappointed. I think doing the majority of the side quests with the rest of A-E routes took me about 40 hrs total.
Endings A-E are actual ones.
