This is a very informative review with great walkthrough pacing: not too slow, not too fast. I got mine after this review from Best Buy to paired with LG C9 55" TV. It works great, specially detecting the different color spaces, SDR/HDR DV and HDR10. Upscaling is amazing.
Gigabit Ethernet should be standard at this premium price point. Looks great for disc playback but not great for local LAN playback. Doesn't replace a good custom HTPC or COTS device like the Shield.
I have the Panasonic ub450-k 4K blu-ray player. I really love it for the price, and performance in the price range. It support both HDR10+ (and ordinary HDR10), and Dolby Vision. Please do a review and a test of it 👍
Just picked mine up during prime day. Only watched mortal kombat 4k & 1 disc of lost so far. Up front, seems like a slight improvement over XB1 & PS4 pro on my 5 year old 4k LG tv. Definitely happy with it
Considering that less and less people go for physical media and oppo getting out of the Blu-ray market, it makes me wonder if we still continue to release movies like this in the future. Also consider that studios want the most control they can get of their movies and streaming is a great way to force you to hunt and go to different services when you favourite movie changes home!
Which is exactly the problem and which is why I will always prefer and buy physical media. I want control of my stuff, not these greedy companies. Plus picture and audio quality will always be superior, end of discussion.
This guy said there’s no difference between his old Sony in this Panasonic 820 when it comes to performance and picture quality don’t fall for it. At this price point of $500 the Panasonic is the best 4K player in the market today I sold my Sony 4K player to get the Panasonic 8 The 4K quality is awesome20
Does this have dolby atmos ,dtx . I tried the Sony x700 actually two of them first one I got would not recognize a disk the 2nd the software would not connect to the internet. I m looking for dolby vision , hdr, atmos , dtx while playing a 4k uhd dvd . Apps don't care about I have a sheild pro for that. Any suggestions I would appreciate Thank you ..
For your Atmos setup, did you run your video and audio into the receiver as well using the single hdmi output, or did you use the hdmi audio out only into your receiver?
Techno Dad: good review, but I was disappointed that you did not SPECIFICALLY address streaming “QUALITY.” Yes, you covered what was and was not offered/menu, but I wanted to know what kind of “PQ.” this deck could do as a streaming device. Dolby Digital Plus is correct with Atmos because of limitations of ARC. With EARC in the future for a player and tv it then can stream true Atmos where it won't be compress Atmos of Dolby Digital.
My bet is that they use DLNA for network access to the server. DLNA has got to be 15-20 years old and has never been updated to support the latest video/audio codecs.
With the Alexa Skill for Plex I had to open ports on my router to get it working, I would suspect the Panasonic suffers from the same issue. When you issue an Alexa command it has to go out to Amazon's servers then over to Panasonic's servers and down to your player.
Hi, just recently subscribed to the channel, great content! Although I do have a question, will atmos work if i plug my bluray player to one hdmi port and plug my audio receiver on another port separately instead of running my bluray player's signal through the hdmi in port on my receiver then plug that to just one port on my tv?
The colors are dull and washed out when I turn the HDR on . Why is this happening ? Panasonic DP-UB420 connected to a Philips 436M6 hdr monitor . Can someone please help me ?
Nice review. As I am about to transition my video camera to one with 4k/HDR recording (Panasonic Lumix S5 II) this player's support for BDXL discs (recordable, multilayer, BD, such as BD-R DL, BD-RE DL, etc.) caught my eye.
I ordered this last night from Amazon. Should be coming tomorrow. I ordered it mostly for the advertised DSD and other audio files playback. I have been looking for a way to play my multi-Channel DSD files in full DSD quality. As far as I can tell the specs in the manual for this device indicate that it should be able to play them over the network. I am hoping that JRiver will pick it up as a DLNA player and that it will be able to play them and output the proper DSD signal to my Yamaha RX-A2A via HDMI. That is what the specs seem to indicate and if it doesn't do it then it will be going back to Amazon as that is the main reason I am purchasing it. It seems like the 4k playback might be a bit better than my Sony UBP-800M2 (Which really sucks for Dolby Vision as you either have to leave it on or off or change it each time you put a movie in). If it works for my DSD files as advertised Supporting multi-channel and gapless playback (Gapless of course relies on the codecs being the same between subsequent files), though I will be quite happy. If anyone is using this unit for DSD and other High Def Audio formats please let me know what you think..
Thanks for the video. I purchased the 820 from BB on sale for $100 off. I really like it so far. I also tried to stream my movies on my home network with no luck. My movies are a combination of MKV and Xvid and the Xvid movies are grayed out and won't play at all and the MKV had audio issues. I have pretty much determined these types of players aren't made for that capability. They play great through the Plex app on my Roku anyway. One thing that is bothering me is, I broke out my old CDs and played a few and the sound quality is not good. I compared the sound to streaming from my music collection on my home network and to the Tidal app on my Roku. And honestly most of my music is not recorded at high quality and everything sounded better than the quality of the CD on the 820. I almost feel like I'm doing something wrong. I'm just using default settings for everything.
Do you have ANYTHING plugged into the toslink on your OLED? From my personal (Frustrating) experience I could not get Atmos from Netflix or ANY app for that matter while the toslink was being utilized. This problem occured no matter what settings I used and I did have HDMI set up through ARC on both ends. Soon as toslink was removed I was able to get ATMOS.
Oh I'm positive you can't. I'm getting Atmos through HDMI through the ARC. What I meant is that I also had a toslink connected to the TV and for unknown reasons the TV wouldn't allow ATMOS to pass through the ARC until I removed the toslink cable. I never understood how one could interfere with the other. LG couldn't explain it either lol
Super review. Thank you for your time. So as strictly a streaming device (NETFLIX, PRIME) , will this provide better picture and sound quality over the Nvidia Shiled Pro or a Roku Ultra??
There wouldn't be necessary to spend double the money on this player over the Sony X700 if the Sony X700 worked properly without the skipping and freezing issues.
Great review. I have an old Harman Kardon receiver which doesn’t have hdmi input but only optical in. I watched many reviews of UB 820 and this is the first video in which I learned that the optical audio out doesn’t transfer high quality lidless audio. So would that be a game changer?
I have a 4K TV and my question is between the entry level all the way to the mid range 4k players, will I see any difference in “upscaling” picture quality from playing a standard DVD or a 1080 Blu-ray disc? Next question, will there be any “upscaling” through the USB port from these 4K Blu-ray players?
How about the Sony X700? I was convinced to buy this player but then I saw the Sony and a lot of reviewers say that there's not a lot of difference between these two players for the difference in price.
What is Dolby vision ?? I keep this on then I can’t make adjustments with my hdr setting buttons so I turned it if and the hdr10 works better without it ! Also they are saying that if you gave a different region disc you can rig it by hitibgvstop then top menue at least 7 times and it becomes a region free player I don’t want to try it so that I won’t void any warranty 😊thanks
I tried the SDR to HDR set to “off” and my player still would not change out of Dolby vision mode while streaming on Netflix, it plays everything in Dolby vision unless you manually turn off Dolby vision, The Sony x800m2 does the same thing, except it does it with physical disc as well, the Panasonic doesn’t do with 4K movies, it recognizes HDR10 or Dolby vision and play it on disc.
What brand and model is your awesome 4k blu ray player up stairs? Thanks. And which one would you get this flagship Sony or Panasonic flagship 4k blu ray player? Thanks & God bless you!
I just bought this player and love it. I just use it offline though just for physical media. One problem I haven't resolved is, I want the panasonic remote that came with it to control my VIZIO SB362An-F6B 36in 2.1 Sound Bar. Any ideas how I would go about that?
Need clarification. If I watch Disney+ movie with atmos does the SDR/HDR Conversion option need to be off or on? It’s in the advanced settings. Thanks.
Panasonic remote control for this player doesn't have a Loop button. Is there a way to playback video in repeat/loop mode by chapter or the entire movie?
Great video, I have a question when I put in a 4k disk the night scenes are so dark you really can't see nothing what do I need to adjust to cure that problem
Hey again, i have a denon 2300w receiver and a panasonic 820 4k player and a samsung 900b. Hi there...if I have ripped movies on a external USB drive, what formats can this 4k bluray player play? I used to have an Oppo 103D and that played a lot of formats from an external hard drive...hmm.thanks
Can anyone help. I gave this blu ray 4K player and I’m using Atmos. On menu screen on any disc it has sound but as soon as I press play to watch a movie I have no Audio. Thank you.
I am using ub820 as you mentioned in your videos. thank you for those videos and help with settings. I have a 7.4.4 Dolby atmos home theatre. using AVR Denon 3600h and Nvidea shield as the media player. when I am using the shield am getting full atmos. but when I connect my ub820 it shows input as PCM and FR and FL channels only on. I was using Fury 4k blueray which has atmos as audio selected. settings I changed as you mentioned in your videos. but still no Dolby atmos. what am I missing? can you pls help me?
Is the last Jedi Dolby vision? I thought all Disney and Disney owned movies were HDR on disc and Dolby vision on digital and Disney plus? I have the movie I’m gonna have to check it out.
@@LonSeidman I wanna clear up something. I did a Google search, so the fist 4K disc release is in Dolby vision. All other re releases are now in hdr 10. I have the 4K Skywalker set so that’s why. I never bought the first 4K release.
Just got this player and I’ve tried Gemini man and coming to America 4K his discs and it keeps listing the video as 4K but the hdmi video row constantly stays at 1080 not 4K. Even pressing info on my tv shows it is only a 1080p image. Any ideas as to why? My guess is I might need to try resetting the player.
Is my issue due to me playing Dolby vision movies? I see that in the Dolby vision settings it states video information won’t be available. Is it safe to say that when watching Dolby vision discs, video output will always say 1080? This is when pressing the playback info button on the remote. The first row with the movie icon does show a 4K resolution.
Thanks for the detailed review. Bought the player based on youtube review. Blu ray 4k is fantastic on ub820. I compare it with NVIDIA shield and Sony x700. Ub820 is definitely better for my eyes. I have one issue. Not sure if anyone else has the same problem. Netflix is coming out with very low contrast, almost like grayed out. I had subscribed for 4K content. Also Netflix looks fine on NVIDIA as well. Any idea why only Netflix is very low contrast?
I still had have my oppo 203 i had bought the step up model of this Panasonic player the 9000 , it wouldn't play mkv 4k files with atmos nor my regular bluray mkvs with atmos the oppo 203 does wouldn't play my mp4 4k. with dolby vision files either ,nor does it have that stretch feature the oppo has that goes with my anamorphic lens on my projector that turns every letter box movie to full screen, so i gave the Panasonic to my son.
I am having a problem with this player with older DVDs like the "Black Stallion" and "While you were sleeping." What happens is a black border that goes all-around the picture and the picture does not fit my screen. I have been trying to correct this issue but with no success.
I have this player . Unable to get Dolby atmos output though I use Yamaha rx-6va Dolby atmos 7.2 amplifier. I use LG hdmi 3D tv ( no 4K). Can you help to solve this?
Hi Thinking of buying this player but how is the video/audio playback support through USB from external hdd? And does it support showing subtitles in SRT format? Any help appriciated
It really depends on the video format for USB playback. MKVs etc likely not but mp4 files should be fine. Not sure on the SRT but I'd say probably not.
Is anyone else having issues with the USB connectivity. I purchased a 2tb external HD and it wont connected. It is in the correct file format but it will not recognize it. Panasonic told me if its under 4tb its should work.
Streaming movies from a NAS (whether HD or UHD) needs at most 60 Mbps so you don't need a Gbps connection. Hell I stream my NAS Plex to my Roku over wireless and no stutters whatsoever. That's why all the streaming boxes, TV's, UHD/BluRay players have 100 Mbps connections. 1Gbps is just not needed and will only increase cost.
I just bought this player and anybody please help me i have it hooked up to my pioneer elite lx503 receiver which is running thru the arc of a sony 900e the problem is when I play a 4k uhd movies my tv doesn't show that the HDR is on same thing when i run Netflix also on Netflix when I play a dolby atmos movie on Netflix I get no sound anybody out there PLEASE HELP
would you recommend this player over oppo 203 or just get a xbox one x and play 4k games and movies on it please let me know i can only afford one and want to get the best bang for buck
Generally the 4K UHD Bluray/DVD player is excellent but the apps other than the well supported ones are not as good. I can't get the Chess game to work at all on my tv
Am I understanding this right? I have an AVR that supports ATMOS and HDR10, but not 10+ or Dolby Vision. My TV can display 10+ and Dolby Vision. Can I send the audio of the player to my AVR and get the ATMOS track while the video from the player goes straight into my TV in order to get Dolby Vision and 10+? Has anybody tried something like this? Were there any issues with audio syncing or a certain way that you need to set up your AVR (mine is set up to be controlled by my TV at the moment)?
I believe that if you have the receiver set to run the video as pass-through those other unsupported HDR modes should work on the television. If not you can run it the way you described. You might need to adjust the audio sync on your player or in the AVR.

@@kingeo25 thank you. But i did this, but still i have the issue 😔
@@rajmohanpm8189 Surprising to learn you're having that issue. I have the exact same receiver and have never had that issue.
@@kingeo25 yes i know, 😔😔.
Is the last Jedi Dolby vision? I thought all Disney and Disney owned movies were HDR on disc and Dolby vision on digital and Disney plus? I have the movie I’m gonna have to check it out.
Last Jedi is definitely Dolby vision on disc, the others are only HDR unfortunately
@@LonSeidman I wanna clear up something. I did a Google search, so the fist 4K disc release is in Dolby vision. All other re releases are now in hdr 10. I have the 4K Skywalker set so that’s why. I never bought the first 4K release.
@@redeye007 Oh wow.. they actually downgraded with the box set? That's crazy..

Does it play DVD +R DL?
I just got a Panasonic UB420 for only like $80 USD
Is there a Sony equivalant?
Why would a player come with 3d glasses?
Because people ask
No players do...EVER...this noob doesn't know what he's talking about...🤪🤪
are these things still region locked?
Yes, for regular blu-ray and dvd. 4k blu-rays have no region locking.
The stretch feature is a joke. I have loads of non anamorphic DVDs.
Can someone tell me what "eb" stands for at the end of the name?cuz i am keeping seeing that in polish stores
I am having a problem with this player with older DVDs like the "Black Stallion" and "While you were sleeping." What happens is a black border that goes all-around the picture and the picture does not fit my screen. I have been trying to correct this issue but with no success.
I wouldn't worry about it if I were you
Panasonic are crap for playing non anamorphic DVDs. My old Cambridge formats them to fill the screen.
I have this player . Unable to get Dolby atmos output though I use Yamaha rx-6va Dolby atmos 7.2 amplifier. I use LG hdmi 3D tv ( no 4K).
Can you help to solve this?

Why do we need to pay for the software, hardware, and license support for Netflix, Amazon, etc for EVERY COMPONENT we buy?
Hi
Thinking of buying this player but how is the video/audio playback support through USB from external hdd?
And does it support showing subtitles in SRT format?
Any help appriciated
It really depends on the video format for USB playback. MKVs etc likely not but mp4 files should be fine. Not sure on the SRT but I'd say probably not.
Is anyone else having issues with the USB connectivity. I purchased a 2tb external HD and it wont connected. It is in the correct file format but it will not recognize it. Panasonic told me if its under 4tb its should work.
Is it possible to play 4K video files off of a USB drive using this player?
Yes but you might have issues with audio especially if you're trying to play lossless audio tracks.
Way too expensive for being two years old.
Where’s the new model for 2020?
I’m waiting for a 2020 model to pair with my LG CX Oled
Are there any new models coming? I can’t find any info
Is this a multi region player?
Is there any uhd player that could read mkv chapters?
Apple TV 4K can do that with Infuse app.
100 Mbit in 2019 on a $500 device. Wow.
Sten Isaksson is that good or bad?
The Sony tends to lock up a fair bit on disc's
I think if you’re looking for games the Xbox is the way to go
Generally the 4K UHD Bluray/DVD player is excellent but the apps other than the well supported ones are not as good.
Would I be able to watch HDR10+ on an LG oled that does not support HDR10+
