Panasonic UB9000 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player - Best Settings (In-Depth Explanation)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 фев 2025
- I discuss all the settings on the Panasonic UB9000. These settings also apply to the sister model UB820 also, which uses almost exactly the same features. This video explains all the settings that these players have and why I choose them. It's an in-depth discussion & explanation of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Players, and how I've set players up from the very early years of LaserDisc, DVD, and Blu-ray. It's a long video, but I wanted to put something out there that fully discusses the settings on this player, and how to avoid any setup issues on this player even on other players.
I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you can take something from it.
BEST SETTING TLDR = 4K, 12-bit, Auto 4:4:4 chroma for ease of use.
This setting makes it so chroma will be dropped in favor of color depth which will always result in the best image quality possible for 4K HDR, 60 FPS content, and 4K HDR 24 FPS content.
CORRECTIONS
--I meant to say Technics for the CD/SACD Player, not Toshiba.
--I meant to say Auto 12-bit instead of just Auto.
--I meant to say FEL instead of MEL when talking about the higher bit-rate version of metadata for Dolby Vision.
Sometimes there's a lot going through my mind at once, and catch myself naming something wrong. Hope that helps it's anybody misunderstood those parts of the video.
HDMI 2.0 SPEC
Player settings should be 12-bit. In the case of Gemini Man and 60 frames per second content in HDR, chroma should be set to Auto 4:4:4 so the player retains bit-depth at 12-bit and keeps to the HDMI 2.0 spec by switching to 4:2:2. Or manually set 4:2:2 chroma for all content. As long as your display is good, this shouldn't be an issue, and both should look equal. This will keep the 12-bit color depth at 60 FPS, 4:2:2, and 4K. In this case, Auto (from a usability standpoint) is best because it will correctly adapt to the HDMI 2.0 spec and rating bit-depth, and that is the most important thing. Older displays are best set to auto so it switches between 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 as needed because displaying 4:2:2 might look incorrect in some cases. This is the best setting for usability for all display types also. However, I like to control things and manually set 4:4:4 chroma, knowing that I'm not watching 60FPS content.
If you set the player to 10-bit, 60 FPS content will downgrade to 8-bit because 60 FPS content is out of the HDMI spec at 4:4:4. You don't ever want this, so always use 12-bit.
4:4:4 / 4:2:2 NOTE
If they don't look equal then there is a weakness in the chain somewhere. Check the Player, TV, and even receiver or any passthrough device you are using to see if anything is getting in the way. When both look equal, the Player and the Display complement each other perfectly, and this is the best-case scenario when watching 4K HDR 60 FPS content.
If your TV has issues displaying 4:4:4 and you can see issues, or have seen reports that 4:4:4 simply doesn't work on your TV then force 4:2:2. I've done this on my older TVs and it looked perfect when using 4:2:2 so do what suits you best.
Animation is a good place to test 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 using 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. How do curved objects look? The Spears and Munsil test disc also has many useful patterns to check to see if your display or even player has issues with 4:2:2 or 4:4:4.
PLAYER INFORMATION
The new 4K models have a K on the end. This means they have brand-new chips for audio. This was because of the AKM factory fire. The audio chips have the same specs as the previous model, but I have heard reports of smoother audio performance using analog outs. I use another player for that, so I can't speak to that, but if that is the case it's always nice to hear.

An excellent job on explaining every detail needed about the settings on the UB9000 and the UB820. Near the end of your video, you say it was a long version, however I felt it was a perfect, calm explanation of How and Why.
Thank you so much for sharing your keen knowledge with us home theatre enthusiasts like yourself... very much appreciated!
I really appreciate that thank you.
You are very welcome!
Can you explain a little more about the 'High Clarity Sound' settings in Audio settings mode please? And what it does exactly for sound? Because I'm running my home theatre setup with an AVR (Onkyo RZ-50) and don't want to confuse the sound processing between the AVR and my UB820. @@hdmoviesource
Ive seen some tests and it doesn't actually increase sound quality by anything. But it does turn the display off when you watch or listen to music if you want. I don't use it.@@perrysmiles60
Your sweater says it all my friend...you are indeed a "Champion"! Panasonic should officially endorse you for this tremendous offering. Thank you for taking the time. Best wishes.
haha, thank you. Much appreciated Jan.
You're most welcome!@@hdmoviesource
Have a good one Jan.
I recently discovered how to watch region locked Blu-ray’s on this player. It’s very simple and only entails pressing menu & back on the locked message screen.
Hmm, interesting, I might give that a try one time.
@@hdmoviesource it doesent work on alot of region A blu rays. I used to do it. But ended up having it chipped now plays any disc
Okay, good to know.
How?
@@vladi518 search it on RUclips. But it’s basically pressing menu and back on the locked screen several times.
Thank you so very much for this video. I used your settings and I am now enjoying my UB820!
Great to hear! Thanks. The UB820 is a great player, enjoy, and thanks for your comment Caesu.
Just had this player delivered today!!! Watched this whole video while setting up and probably the most mundane, boring, put me to sleep video I could have absolutely needed!!! Absolutely fantastic!!! Great job and I hope you keep the content coming. My first Demo will be Ready Player One 🎥 🍿 🔊🔊 setup with 65" LGG2, 7.4.4 surround system, Denon, Emotiva, SVS and now Panasonic 🔥
Thank you again from Detroit, Michigan
I glad you could catch up on your sleep, LOL.
@@hdmoviesource lol this player is top notch and just ordered 10 4k ultra dvd's on prime day 🎥 🍿 ✅
Awesome, enjoy!
Another fantastic video Carl I went through the menus with you and made changes I found it extremely informative and really helpful I've only got the 820 multi region which I must say is the best player I've ever had and I had a blu rayer from day one my old sony still plays I've had 5 players and 2 4ks. The Panasonic player plays everything you put in it. Thank you Carl for explaining all the technical stuff truly brilliant video 10 🌟 👍
Thanks Phil, good to hear and I hope it helps.
How do I connect my soundbar do I need to change any settings
Does it have HDMI?
Fellow LG C9 user here with a UB 820 (from twitter) and watching this vid was fun. I've calibrated my TV and Home theater but I always love watching these kind of videos just in case there's something new I can learn. Funny is the S&M disc menu, I've had that on my screen so much lol ! Love the Panasonic players, only down side is the playback of some digital files. Not an issue if you're just using it for discs mainly. You've caused me to change a few of my settings, mainly the ones set to Auto. Solid logic behind it and I probably left it that way out of an abundance of caution. Thanks for all the info here !
Nice, glad it helps and thanks for the feedback, much appreciated 👍.
An excellent video, I've almost had my UB9000 for 2 years and you have taught me a few things. I made a few tweaks to my settings based on your video. Thanks.
Thanks Mark, glad it helped. I didn't see many videos fully explaining the settings so I thought it would be a good idea to put out a video explaining everything.
this is exactly the video I needed to learn about my new Panasonic 820 setting and what they do,
Thank you George, I hope it's helped. 👍
I have deleted my previous negative comment. That video was superb. Having watched it all the way though and 0:03 just purchasing the 9000, you helped me so much. Such a thorough walk through. Amazing. Thank you
Thanks for that! I really appreciate it. Let me know what you think to the ub9000. I love it.
Thanks for the video, man. I have a UB820 and I was messing with the settings but I needed someone to explain to me what they actually were. I'm really nowhere near as much of a videophile as I am an audiophile, but everything looks great!
Glad to hear it! Thank you Chad.
My UB9000 came in yesterday, taking off all day Friday to set up.
Sweet, good purchase. If you need any help setting is up let me know.
@@hdmoviesource Thank you for the offer, watched the video 3 times, so the setup went smoothly. The UP9000 is connected to my Samsung 8K 65" QN900B, this player really complemented the TV abilities to upconvert to 8K, likely due to sending a higher quality PQ and the super high luminance setting. A major upgrade compared to my 4K Samsung UBD-M9700. Also, it took standard 1080p discs to a whole new level. And 4K movies whoa stratosphere!
@@AUTOBOTRONIC 8K, oh wow that's awesome. I'd love to see that. I bet it looks excellent.
Very informative. Made some tweaks based on your recommendations. Thank you for taking the time to do this. It is greatly appreciated.
Thank you Crow, much appreciated.
Thank you so much for this thoughtful and detailed settings video, it was very helpful to me!
Thanks psgrimm, much appreciated. I love this stuff and I thought I'd share what I've learned so far.
Hi, I just wanted to comment on your video. I'm a first time viewer and I need to say WOW THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. As you mentioned you noticed there really isn't any videos out there providing in depth walk through for this player. The amount of time RUclips describing step by step each setting was exactly what I needed and what I've been looking for and researching for, for soo long. I currently have on this player for maybe almost a year and a half two years as well as a LG OLED C1 TV. I'm not new to TVs and tech but I'm not super super experienced and just like you I always like to look at different settings and I wonder different things so when I came across your video I was very appreciative for it. My TV is also professionally calibrated. With that being said I have two questions for you and maybe you could provide some insight.
1. With my old led TV I have the setting for HDR tone mapping on the TV itself the LG C1 but the player also has the HDR optimizer for HDR content I've asked this question on some sites but never really got a good concrete answer it always seems 50/50. But the question is is should I leave HDR tone mapping set to ON as well as the HDR optimizer set to "ON" on the player? Or should I turn the HDR tone mapping setting to "OFF" on the TV and set to "ON"on the player, or lastly do Off for the player and tone mapping ON for the TV. I wasn't sure if having them both on if they both cause conflicting tone mapping issues or not, As knowledgeable as you seem I figured this would be a good question for you.
My second question is relating to the sound settings I currently have a Sennheiser Ambeo Max sound bar, So I was curious what your recommendations are for some of those sound adjustments that you mentioned in the video as I know you mentioned about having the AV system set up and surround sounds but since this is a soundbar it's a bit different but it does play a lot of the audio that you mentioned
If you can get back to me I would really appreciate it and also you have gained a follower.
Hey Vincent, thanks for the great response and questions. I've seen in some cases were using both HDR Optimizer on the Player and the TV is beneficial. What the HDR Optimizer does is cap the nits at 1000 nits. This is more digestible by most TVs out today. Then the TV can use that information and optimize from there. I would always use the optimizer on the player but see if the TVs version doesn't crush blacks. It certainly does make the image look brighter. Some may call this double tone mapping, but it's done in a sequential order, Player and then the TV, so it's not the same as double tone mapping a Dolby Vision image. I'm often testing out using it on the TV even after owning my LGC9 for years now. So in some situations it definitely looks better and can do a better job than the player.
I don't have a sound bar, but is it possible to send the audio through as bit-stream?
@@hdmoviesource thank you for your reply and your in depth explanation. I do notice that with the HDR optimizer and HDR tone mapping both turned on the image is much brighter. Which for me I don't mind. I have had multiple tvs professionally calibrated over the years by a well known person in the industry. And sometimes I question if the image I'm seeing on the player is the creators intent such as sky shots or day time shots where the blue of the sky looks darker, then what I would expect it to be even after having my eyes trained to see the image in calibrated picture settings. So having extra brightness I don't mind sometimes, but then the question in my mind is that the way it should be. It's always a back and forth. As For the soundbar I don't have option to change it from PCM or bitstream on soundbar. But rather on the TV to change inputs from PCM or bitstream.
@@vincent-ui4ry Oh I see, so the sound comes from the TV to the soundbar? Okay, Yeah, I think there's an option to send as PCM or bit-stream. Bit-stream is typically better. I do enjoy teh brighter image also. It's nice to play around and see what things look like.
Outstanding deep walk through.! Thanks ☑️👍
Thank you Chipmunk.
Thanks for this amazing soothing walk through.
I have a Sony Bravia OLED.
I was having a lot of handshake issues between the TV and the Arcam.
This seems to have solved it.
Thank you again.
I'm glad to hear it worked for you. I appreciate it.
You have taught me so many things from this video. Thanks for all the work you put into it for making it possible.
Thanks for watching.
Nice and very useful video thanks a lot.
Got this player playing on the panasonic lz2000 it's something else.
Thank you best, much appreciated 👍.
Oustanding video. I truly thank you for it. A good, thorough explanation such as this is a rarity. I just hope that choosing the screen type as "OLED" for a modern QD-OLED like the Sony A95L is still the right choice. Happy to hear your thoughts if you got any
Should be, but you could use LED High because that's 1500 nits, and the TV will tone map that perfectly anyway. Tonemapping 1500 nits with these 2022/2023 TVs is easy.
Love this video. I reference it all the time. Thankyou for this 👍
I have a new UB9000 with the latest update, and new premium level HDMI cables. Wish id found a setting that might affect my current audio hiccups. Ive never heard these hiccups before with my older Oppo playing blurays, so my issue is related to the UB9000, the cables, or 4K discs, or a combo of all !
Several times at completely random points the audio will drop for a micro second. Im calling this a hiccup. Short and quick but really annoying ! Occasionally when its happened, Ive backed up and tried to replicate it at the same point, and its gone ? Ive heard that 4K discs can be finicky, so i clean them with cloth made for glass lenses - hasnt made a difference. I dont think the video skips, but it might be and im just not seeing it happen.
Last two 4K discs that did this, had Dolby Vision tracks. I mention this because i read somewhere to turn off DV in the players settings as a possible fix. IM about to try this - what do you think ?
Standard Bluray discs through the UB9000 dont seem to do this at all.
I wonder if doing a full factory reset on the player might help? Or turning off BD-Live seems to be causing alot of issues.
Thanks so much for this. Only seeing HDR with my new Sony X95K has been bugging me for a few weeks and your video helped me finally get Dolby Vision working (along with an input setting tweak on the Sony). Thanks for going through all the settings and short explanations.
Great to hear! Thanks Scott, hope it helped.
@@hdmoviesourceShould I update the firmware to the latest as I've heard the multi region region free will be effected but not sure.
It is effected, if you have a region-free firmware, don't upgrade, and see if the people you got the firmware are working on a new firmware update.

Sony displays with Dolby Vision come default off, so that has to be found in the setting and turned on.
For that reason I connect the 820 directly to the display. The 420, which doesn't do Dolby Vision, is connected to the (Denon) receiver.
And in the 420, HDR comes default Off, and in the 820, both HDR and Dolby Vision are default Off.
I noticed that too, Thanks.@@jnagarya519

Is the anime you're talking about Ghost in the Shell? Hahah
Great video btw, really enjoyed watching through this and listening to your explanations for all settings. :)
Oh that's it yeah, haha thanks.
Great explanation dude!
Question...
My setup:
Samsung S95B connected with the HW995B surround soundbar via HDMI-earc.
1. Will the UB820 provide me with Dolby Atmos audio? If so, will it do that if I connect the UB820 directly to my TV, or will I have to connect a second hdmi into the soundbar?
2. Since my TV doesn't support Dolby Vision, will HDR optimizer work on movies that support DV?
3. Should I leave the HDR display type on OLED, or is LED High a better fit for my modern QD-OLED?
4. Should I turn off tone mapping on my tv and leave it off when watching HDR10+ also? Or only when using HDR optimizer?
Thank you. 1. If the soundbar can accept HDMI and play Dolby Atmos then you should be good. But I know very little about your soundbar so I'm not sure.
2. Yes, the HDR optimizer works on all HDR movies.
3. You could use High because that's 1500 nits, and the reason why is that your display will tone map up 4000 nits. Actually, if it tone maps up to 4000 nits you may not need to even turn the HDR Optimizer on.
4. Good question. I would see which one looks better. Chances are the TV maybe doing a really good job as long as the TV was released in 2023/2024.
Thanks for this wonderful video breakdown of the settings and what they do for recent Panny players. I am going to go back through and look at what differs in what I have my 820 set up as. There's no harm in changing for a few weeks.
Thanks King, yeah, check your settings, just to be sure is always good. Shouldn't be much difference between my UB9000 and the 820.
Got myself a new UB9000 V2 a couple of weeks ago. Very happy with the picture and sound quality. :) Thanks for the guide! I was just wondering if you or anyone else in the comments knew if there is a setting for it to automatically switch to RCA out when playing music and HDMI audio out when watching movies?
It might work if you unplug the HDMI, at least that's what I think happened when I tested the analog.
@@hdmoviesource It actually seems to autoswitch now, I put the RCA on F and L first, but that was wrong. There were two other outputs next to the XLR’s on each side of the player that I completely missed. Derp! But either way, fresh owner and already having major issues with freezing and artifacting on brand new 4K and BD discs. I’ve seen some people on the forums experience this, only mostly after like two years and apparantly it only gets worse, so I have to replace it under warranty this coming week. :(
Okay, let me know how the new player is.
@@hdmoviesource Got a new one 3 days after posting and have tested all the same discs, plus about 15 other and have had zero issues so far. 😊 Seems like the laser on mine shouldn’t have made it past the assembly line.
Okay, very good to know.
Very helpful video. Thank you for making it. What HDR Display Type would you use for an XGIMI Horizon Ultra Projector? It has 2300 lumens (670 nits). And would you also tweak this further with the Dynamic Range Adjustment? Like you, I'm not interested in using the UB-9000 with apps, just discs.
Hey Donald,
I would try the low LCD setting, that is 500 nits. But, you can try the 1000-nit version and see if you display tonemaps okay. The dynamic range adjustment is really based on whether you have black-level issues. A projector, typically, has slightly raised blacks, so I think a setting of 0 would be completely fine.
Thanks. Not sure if you use an Apple TV 4K but would love to see a video from you regarding same
Hi, I don't use an Apple 4K TV. I believe HDTV Test made a good video about the settings that you need for Apple TV.
Great video sir, was very helpful.
Viewer pro tip: watch in 2x speed =)
Good tip! Thanks RW, much appreciated. 🤣
Super video. The hdr setting button on the remote, what is the best setting?
It depends on your display. I've found that setting one, or setting two is the best. Which works out to be +2 or +4 in the HDR settings when you manually change it.
I agree! Do one thing and do it exceptionally well! Looking forward to receiving my ub9000 next week. It’ll be paired with a Sony A95K ( replacing a ubp800 Sony BD player, which froze a couple of times while playing Dune… brand new player only used once).
Nice, the UB9000 is on a whole another level. I apologize if I've already told you but I've made a video about getting the best black levels from the optimizer. Hope it helps and I hope you enjoy your new Player.
@@hdmoviesource thank you!

Hi there, Just finished the video. I downloaded a copy to have offline for reference as the info in this video is great. I got myself the Panasonic 420, per recommendation of an AVSForum member who had that and the 820. I have a 2016 Sony TV, which doesn't have Dolby Vision. So, I decided to save on features i don't need, or will use in the foreseeable future. With the exception of DV, and the analog outputs, The play is identical as far as software and the HDR optimizer. I also live in a small apartment, so I don't have the space for a full HT setup, so I have my TV, an Atmos compatible sound bar, and this player in a small bedroom. So far have been very pleased with the Panasonic, it replaced a Sony UBP-X700, which is now the backup player. One thing I wanted to ask you is would the 7.1 audio reformatting setting make a 7.1 track more compatible with a 5.1 setup? You didn't mention anything along those lines in the video, so thought I would ask.
Either way very good video, will keep a copy around on my Plex server for quick reference (if needed.) have a great day!
Thanks Clinton, I appreciate it. I also have another video explaining further on black level improvements. If you have any black level issues there's way to improve things by using the Panasonic player. I made a recommendation on the HDR setting using -1, to make it look like Dolby Vision, in terms of brightness but it doesn't improve black levels. My other video goes into more detail about that specific setting, please check it out. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the in-depth explanation. One thing I can not get to work on is secondary audio. Trying this on the Band of Brothers disc. Option for In Their Own Words. A PIP box appears of the veteran discussing the scene but I can't get the audio to work. The main audio continues only. Soundtrack shows 1ENG DTS-HD MSTR Multi, and the Secondary Video shows Video 1VC-1, Soundtrack 1ENG DTS-HD LBR Mono. I have the Digital Audio Output, BD Video Secondary Audio set to Auto. Found you have to set this to On to hear secondary audio. Auto defaults to main audio. Sorry had question and figured it out.
Hmm, interesting, I don't use this feature personally, but that's really good to know. Thanks Peter.
Hi. You completely missed the analogue audio output section.
It doesn't have adjustments for a speaker distance. Instead it has a time delay for front and rear speakers. I don't know how to adjust it. Panasonic was unable to help me with this issue.
Another problem is setting a subwoofer crossover frequency.
It simply doesn't have this option and this frequency is unknown.
I honestly haven't used the analog section much, but I would leave the speakers at large and let your receiver deal with the crossovers.
When I use analogue outputs I have them connected directly to the 5 channel power amplifier input. Only HDMI connection on the receiver can deal with those issues.
Okay.
Thanks for this! Much needed. 👍
My pleasure Jimmie, I appreciate it.
Very thorough review! Do you know why this player would have issues playing back 4K content, macroblocking, pixelation and glitchy freezing? I’ve been having tons of issues with mine, it’s gotten to the point where I pretty much will not watch a 4K disc in this player. Interestingly it has no issues with Blu-ray or DVD, both of those formats actually look fantastic on my player. It’s only 4K that has been having exceptional playback issues.
It sounds like dirty discs, or a bad laser? Not sure.
@@hdmoviesource Thanks for the prompt reply! Might be the latter, definitely not dirty discs though. I’ve become incredibly compulsive about making sure my discs are clean when I encounter these issues. I’ve not yet ventured to attempt cleaning the laser though. I would think if it was the laser, it would also impact Blu-ray playback, but maybe the laser is just very minimally affected.
I'm having the same issue with 4K discs sometimes not loading and saying Cannot Read Disc.
I wonder if a disc cleaner would fix the problem?
great video, quick question. I have the Sony A95L OLED and it has been reported the TV does over 1000 nits, would i still set the HDR display type to OLED on the UB9000? Thank you.
You could set it to LCD high which is 1500 nits yeah. I think that would be better. Also, many of the new displays tonemap to 4000 nits.
@@hdmoviesource thank you for the response, will test out both OLED and LCD high when I receive it and see which is better
@@easybucket7979 I have a feeling 1500 nits will look better on that display.
@@easybucket7979Any updates? Similar boat as you. OLED vs Super High Luminance LCD setting
I think Super High Luminance will be the best setting in this case.
A greatly informative and detailed video! I changed the Edge Correctness from 0 to 2 while playing a Blu-ray today and didn't notice any ringing!
I own a lower series in Panasonic's UHD line than the one you reviewed here. I have a Panasonic DP-UB420 UHD player that primarily has customization options for HDR10+ content. I can play UHDs that only have Dolby Vision on the discs (via my player's Dynamic Range Conversion Output, I think), which is connected to my Samsung Q60B QLED TV. For 4K discs that only have Dolby Vision, would you recommend setting the Dynamic Range Adjustment slider to -1 like you do on yours?
Whenever I play a Blu-ray disc, would you recommend setting the resolution to Auto, 4K, or 1080p? I always set the Wide Color Gamut to perform a HDR to SDR conversion when playing those type of discs.
How about DVDs? Should I set the resolution to 480p or a different resolution?
Thanks so much for your comments and feedback in this video forum!
Hi Stephen, I actually made another video of Dynamic Range Adjustment, please check it out. -1 is fine for getting the brightness of HDR10 compared to Dolby Vision, but I soon realized that it's not the best setting. I now prefer +2, specifically for my C9 OLED, so it depends on what TV you have, and what year it was made. The 420 is a very good player still. I would always set the resolution to 4K, and I never allow the player to change the color gamut. I would upscale DVD to 4K resolution, same with Blu-ray because I don't want to have to change resolution every time I play a DVD or Blu-ray for any reason. But, please check out my other vide on Dynamic Range for HDR Stephen, I think it helps explain a lot.
@@hdmoviesource Those are wonderful suggestions! Thank you. I also will increase the Dynamic Range Adjustment to +2 on my player's slider. I definitely want to watch your topic-specific video on D.R.A. One follow-up question: will the UHD player tone map differently depending on which output resolution is specified in the settings? It seems like it would vary. I will just keep my resolution set to "4K." Keeping it there would make sense for movies on Blu-ray discs that have Digital Intermediates that were scanned at 4K resolution but then downsampled to 1920x1080 to accommodate the disc's video requirements. Without any reservation, I would want BD titles with 4K scans upscaled or upconverted to 3860x2160 because that's how they're truly intended to look. There are still quite a few films that have received 4K remasters but they've only been released on Blu-ray.
@@stephenlarson3128 Yeah, I would keep the player set to 4K output. I don't think tone mapping has anything to do with the resolution set. Unless that display cannot display HDR at 1080p for instance. But I think most HDR displays should display HDR at 1080p no problem. On my LGC9 1080p and 4K tone mapping looks the same. +2 is perfect for D.R.A on my C9, absolutely perfect.
Thank you for your video, could you please just provide a brief summary if someone does not want to have to rewatch the entire video!
Greatly appreciated
4K resolution to be set instead of auto, I would also suggest 4:2:2 to guarantee compatibility with any display. They are the basics.
I've just invested in the UB820 after a friend recommended it from seeing your review and you aren't wrong. It's am amazing player so thank you for such a brilliant video.
I do have a question I hope you might be able to help me with though?
I am running the UB820 through a Yamaha RX-V685 Reciever (For 5.1 surround sound) and into a Panasonic GZ590 TV. All of which are Dolby Vision/Atmos compatible. Like you I've tried to set everything in these devices to be pass through.
However I've never found the Yamamha reciver super intuitive and nothing on the display is telling me Dolby Vision or Atmos is running. What is the best/easiest way for me to tell if Vision is working correctly on my system?
Thanks in advance.
Hi, one way is to press playback info and that will quickly show you whether you're outputting Dolby Vision or not. If you plan on watching 60 frames per second movies also, I think the player is now best set at ycbr auto and 10-bit. The reason for this is I've been using a Spears and Munsil test disc and this is the best way to make sure everything is fully compatible. I appreciate your comment. Thank you.
I can't thank you enough for this video. I'm relatively new to 4K. I have a 65 inch Oled Fire TV, a Sony STR-DH 790 receiver, and the 9000 player. I was definitely overwhelmed with the settings. I honestly didn't know what half of them were for. I learned so much from you, thank you! I am planning on following your settings. My only question is, are these settings OK for 4K, Blu Ray, and DVD discs? I always prefer the best format available, unfortunately sometimes DVD or standard BD is it. I just wondered if any settings need to be changed depending on format. Thanks again!
Thanks. Yes, these settings work for Blu-ray and DVD too. But I also like to watch things in the best format.
I've noticed a definite improvement. I watched a DVD that I would have sworn was Blu Ray. And 4K discs look truly amazing. I had the UB 820 and hesitated upgrading because I wasn't sure if the price was warranted. But the difference is absolutely noticeable. And your setting recommendations made a huge difference. Thanks again for taking the time to educate us!
Thank you.
My lg full array tv has hdr10+/pro and Dolby vision. Would I have both settings on then?
Absolutely, if you can use both then definitely use both.
If i only watch 1080p blu rays on my 4k tv and 4k player, should i just set the panasonics display resolution to 1080p?
Yes, this means there's no conversion whatsoever, and typically, TVs are better at scaling that Blur-ay Players. I've found that doing this, makes Blu-rays look better.
@@hdmoviesource I have the hisense u8n tv and the sony x800m2 4k blu ray player. IMO, the player does a much better job at upscaling blu rays and dvds. The player also did a better job when I had the sony x85j.

The Panasonic UB9000EB1 we dont have to set the tv aspect ratio ? I dont find it .....
Great video mate. In relation to your comment regarding not to use the av sync option as it may cause issues. If you only have an integrated amp and not an av receiver could the sync option be used in that case without it being a problem?
I would think so yes. I never mess with the sync on the players, but if it's the only choice, I would give it a try. Typically most people should only need 10ms to 20ms delay Chris.
Great video, I have a Panasonic GZ2000 oled and that supports 10+ and DV through a chip, When you play a movie like 1917 that supports both formats it will also default to 10+ which is annoying, and you have to disable 10+ for it to default to DV Really wish the player let you choose , But to be fair the only movie i have that is only 10+ is the cornetto trilogy, Shaun of the dead, Hot Fuzz, Worlds end so i only enable it for those movies.
Yeah, I have heard that it defaults to HDR10+. It would be nice for an option that's for sure. Thank you for the comment.
@@hdmoviesourcelast question as I have modern oled tv, would you recommend I leave colour mod in YcbCR 4:4:4 or YcbCR Auto??

Thanks for a comprehensive video! When playing CD's either on the 9000 or the ub820 are you required to turn on the TV and commence CD playback via the on screen functions? I am not a big fan of that. I would like to put a CD in and it starts playing the music, and not have turn on the tv to choose cd playback.
I do, but I believe you can just press play after putting the disc in. But I do agree it's something to consider.
I received my UB9000p1k (newest version) and it is terrific!! The picture quality its superb! It's true that this is primarily a DVD player, but I think the CD player is the hidden gem. It is a shame that reviewers are not mentioning the CD quality playback, as it is certainly audiophile quality. The soundstage when playing a CD is airy, spacious and open. There is great separation of instruments and highs are not fatiguing at all. This sounds better than my Cambridge CXC v2.

It is yes Chris. Whenever dynamic meta data is present, like with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, the HDR optimizer and tools are turned off. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ content tells your TV how things should look as the director intended.

Nice day. Please can you tell me: What is the difference between the Panasonic dmp-bdt700 and the Panasonic dp-UB9000?
I was told that the Panasonic DMP-BDT700 is better for playing regular DVD and Blu-Ray movies, that its 1080p upscaling is much better and deeper than the DP-UB9000.
Please help me clear this doubt. Thanks You.
I believe this is a Blu-ray only player and cannot play 4K's. I can't imagine it would be better than the UB9000.
Does it make sense to select 12bit even if I am using a 10bit projector that can only handle HDR10?????? I know that my projector accepts the 12bit signal, but it downconvert to 10bit.
I don't, I think it makes sense to use native 10-bit color. That way there's no conversion of color.
How does upscaling work? What setting do you need to have to make sure blu rays are being unpscaled?
4K will make it so Blu-rays scale to 4K.
I have bravia xr x95k tv its only outputting hdr10 and not dolby vision any ideas?
Check that Dolby Vision is turn on from the player. Also check the HDMI settings are the TV are to extended or 2.1, something like that.
Great video! are there any downside in terms of quality when turning on high clarity sound? i´d like to remove the front panel display showing during movies.
No, if anything it will isolate the HDMI's just in case there's any bleed over effects from having other things turned on and are not needed. However, when you start the player up with High Clarity Sound on, the player needs about 5 seconds or so to become responsive, because it's checking that everything is locked into just using the HDMI outs. Other than that, in theory it should offer the absolute best experience David.

Great Video. Question when watching bluray content do recommend switching to SDR/BT.709 or just leaving HDR/BT.2020 (Auto) option regardless.

Thanks for your tips you know your stuff sir. I listened to what you said about HDR2020 to SDR2020 setting on the panasonic is a good setting for projector owners. My experiments with sim2 projector seem to confirm this. If my projector recognises HDR it goes very dark. It is unwatchable. I tried tweaking the contrast setting to get it brighter but it then washes out highlights even with HDR optimiser on. It seems much better to convert the HDR to SDR because you still retain the 4k resolution and the wide colour gamut can work much better for the projector which is giving the best it can between light and dark areas of the image. i am wondering why people think they can get a better picture sending it in HDR to the projector. I know projectors cannot do HDR properly. It would be good to see a comparison video. Thanks
Thanks Justin. I agree. I think SDR is better sent to projectors. At least for now. Maybe there's some that can tone-map better now.
If your display doesn't support HDR10 but Dolby Vision, should you turn off this option in the main settings? I have the Sony Bravia A90J. Thanks
I turn it off, but the player and display auto detect that you don't have HDR10+. But, just to be OCD, I turn it off.

@@garetha1981 no problem.
Firmware version 1.82 was published earlier this week for the UB9000 and UB820. It allows users to explicitly select between what it calls type 1 and type 2 Dolby Vision modes if the player determines that the display device supports both types. Type 1 is also known as standard Dolby Vision or TV-led Dolby Vision where the display device performs tone mapping. Type 2 is also known as low latency Dolby Vision or player-led Dolby Vision where the player performs tone mapping. A player that runs firmware version 1.82 picks type 2 by default if connected to a high luminance device like an LG G3, LG G4, Sony A95L, or Sony Bravia 9 like in the bad firmware version 1.76, but then allows the user to override this choice if the player knows that the display device accepts both types. This video could use an update to incorporate this new setting.
Thank you, I will check it out.
Where can I find release notes on this?
Release notes are at the normal Panasonic firmware download page. I tried to post a link, but it disappeared, probably due to an overzealous anti spam setting.
Okay, so the Dolby Vision update was for the C3 and above displays with high brightness. Because those displays don't pick the correct Dolby mode.
@@hdmoviesource It is the player’s fault, not the display’s fault, for picking and sending the wrong mode when the displays claim a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits or higher in the EDID data sent to the player. Panasonic did this in order to suppress overly bright subtitles in some poorly designed Blu-ray Discs because the player can do so in low latency Dolby Vision mode. The G3 and brighter Dolby Vision displays accept whatever mode that they are sent by the player. The new menu option allows you to override the player’s default pick of low latency Dolby Vision if the display is bright enough and the display claims to accept both modes. The problem is that low latency Dolby Vision does a worse job than standard Dolby Vision on TVs that accept both modes.
When it comes to 4,4,4 I find its more an issue with the HDMI when you watch a full frame movie on a 100gig disk sometimes the bit rate goes over 150mps so I find I get a more stable picture on 4,2,2

Will the sound bar emit good sound without earc?

Excellent video!! I also have a C9 (calibrated) and a Panasonic UB820. One of the things I have recently experimented with is the Dynamic Range Adjustment slider on the 820. I have Dynamic Tone Mapping turned “On” with my C9. I know at times it overbrightens the picture. To fix this, I have been lowering the Dynamic Range Adjustment slider. I have been going back and forth between -5 and -6. That seems to be the area where HDR10 matches Dolby Vision pretty well. It’s not 100% since I think the midtones are still a bit wonky, but it looks really close to DV. I don’t have any measuring devices but I’m wondering what your viewpoints would be on this?
I wouldn't use dynamic tone mapping on the C9. It doesn't do a faithful job at tone-mapping unfortunately. In my opinion, you are best letting Panasonic use the OLED setting in the HDR Optimizer and turn dynamic tone mapping off. I don't like to deviate too far from what movies should look like. LGs dynamic tone mapping (unfortunately goes too far for me). I have experimented though like you using both to achieve a certain look, Josh. Hey, have fun with it. For fun, you could try low LCD and then use dynamic tone mapping also, or even one of the projector settings, and just see if certain things work out nicely. But, again, I just don't like to deviate too much from the directors' intent and image accuracy.

I actually use the Super High Luminance Setting normally. The problem I see is that the overall APL just doesn't get as bright as say something being played in Dolby Vision. I'm not sure if this is how it goes but from what I have read up, LG HDR TVs don't look at all of the metadata on each disc. It only looks at the mastering monitor. So if some discs that only have a MAXLL of only 500 nits but the mastering monitor it was mastered on was 4,000 nits, the LG TV would tone map it down to 4,000 nits. That's why the overall APL is dimmer. With DTM "On," the algorithm is different and "guesses" what the screen should look like. As you said though, it over does it. That's why I have noticed that by lowering the Dynamic Range Adjustment slider, it dims the picture down to the point that highlights that were blown out by the DTM function are now showing back up again. It's not 100% perfect as it still has issues with midtones (which I'm not sure if there is a setting I can adjust to fix that) but it's pretty close. I wish all discs had Doloby Vision. That would fix a lot of these issues, haha!
@@PUsokrJosh305 That's a very interesting theory Josh. It's possible, not sure if it really is doing that but you never know. To confirm this just turn on the HDR optimizer at different levels and see if it still tone maps to 4K nits or not eve if the optimizer is set to 1500 or even 500 nits. That would be interesting.

@@matthewmagrath736: “L”?? L for what? It’s actually a great question/statement considering I’m seeing a pretty good picture with DTM “On” for my LG C9 and adjusting the Panny 820 accordingly.
Was the movie you were thinking of Battle Angel Alita?
I think it was yes Gareth.
@@hdmoviesource I had the same issue with that movie.
Interesting, I'm going to take another look at it soon.
Hi there great video! I have learned a lot. Just waiting on the player to arrive. Connecting to a Sony KD65AF8 do you have any advice on settings for the player or tv to ensure I get the most out of it. Ie do I adjust any setting on the TV before setting player up? Hope to get a newer tv in a year or two but player has skint me lol
Nice Mathew, this 4K Player is excellent. I that an OLED display?
Yes it is and has setting for dynamic luminance on the tv some say put at high etc but wasn’t 100% sure what setting to do. Big movie collector and like to get best quality but bit behind in my knowledge hence found this video
That’s the TV I have great tv but possibly not the brightest HDR
@@matthewmagrath736 Not too sure on that model. If you're familiar with a website called rtings, they typically provide really good baseline settings to use.
Many thanks
The anime with the woman jumping off the building is "Ghost in the Shell".
Yeah, nice! That's it. I couldn't remember what it was called. LOL.
Amazing video! Some quick points: Mine is v1.60 and SOME LIKE IT HOT 4K from KL flickers. This might be why. The XLR outs are too low in volume (voltage). You didn't cover audio sync? An essential feature. Mine is +110 ms...I use a DAC into analogue stereo pre/power amps. I've always thought 1080p looks phenomenal on the UB9000, e.g. AVATAR. 10-bit retention explains it. I just bumped Edge Correction to 2 for testing and Display was Fine Cinema (hey it sounded impresive). Now Normal (again for my own test drive).
Dolby Vision should not flicker, make sure that's the latest firmware. I believe the new one is 1.66. I think. I control sync all on my receiver, and I've never used a 4K Player to control audio sync. What do you think looks better edge correction 2?
@@hdmoviesource I have not tried Edge Correction 1 or 2. It is minimal. But the new version just got released. Interesting that my player never detected v1.69. I daresay I will need to USB install it, but am worried it will disable my region-switching mod circuit.
It definitely will reset the region mod.@@RodneyAllanPoe
@@hdmoviesource Oh no! Thanks. I will send an e-mail to the Aussie seller David Gatti. Cheers. That said, I'm not missing any functionality except Kino Lorber's SOME LIKE IT HOT (and flickering). Heh...fuck's sake. 😆
Interesting, this is supposed to fix some of the flickering I've heard.@@RodneyAllanPoe
Extremely helpful video and this halfwit viewer managed to take on board and make some adjustments. My Panasonic DP-UB9000 is hooked up to last years model LG Oled 55" C2 4LA TV.
One question that occurred to me was why isn't picture size scale changed on the Blu-ray player and why is my TV controlling this?
Do you have any options on the TV to use the original aspect ratio?
@@hdmoviesource Thanks for your expedient reply. Yes, I found the controls eventually after battling off the on-screen junk heap. I can flip from whatever the disc is encoded with to what I'd prefer to watch as many discs have been "sized up" to the extent where everyone looks too fat. Of course, these are "unofficial" discs, but as a bootleg collector of music that's the way it goes sometimes with these types of things.
But why is the TV controlling aspect ratio and not the Blu-ray player? Seems a bit odd to me.
I just found this reply, because RUclips didn't notify me, sorry I'm not ignoring you, LOL.
@@hdmoviesource Relax, you'll be much busier than I am. Cheers.
haha, thanks.
So Panasonic doesn't do pass-through, I can't update my settings with the player. TV also will not let me update when I add it. Funny how everyone says Xbox isn't as good, but it does passthrough and it works fine.
Passthrough as in bitstream? I set my player to bitstream and get Dolby Atmos sound. Is that what you mean?
@@hdmoviesourcemy TV has auto or passthrough. Same with xbox passthrough also.
Audio passthrough is a way for you to connect multiple devices to your TV and pass high-quality audio signals to a receiver
Okay.
