- Keychron is out here dropping bombs in the budget segment with the launch of the Keychron V1. Its a blend of the the C and Q series that delivers south facing facing sockets to avoid Cherry profile interference, QMK/VIA support, a knob and more at a super budget price point. Today we're going to tear it down, take a deep look inside and fill it with Gateron Milky Yellow switches. We'll then top it with some Gentleman keycaps from KPRepublic and see if its really worth all the hype. Come on over and stay awhile, won't ya?
Check out the new Gateron Cream Soda IC and give your feedback via the form.

This board definitely packs a huge punch for the price point. We'll absolutely be revisiting this with a configuration that does it justice. How do you plan to build out your V1? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks so much! I have a v1 and milky yellow pros coming in today and this was helpful. Good quality video! Subbed!
Thanks for checking out the vid and subbing! Happy to help and inspire!
Such a nice dude making High quality videos your so underatted
Man best luck for you!❤️
I appreciate that and thanks for the love!
Also can u try the qk65 jts such a good keyboard
Check the keebs playlist. I build a QK65 and did a video.
With the Q1 you could add a knob to the knobless pcb, it was just that you needed to flash the board to get the knob to work.
I'm not sure how it works with the v1 though.
V1 knobless PCB does not have a rotary socket.
I'm thinking a knobby V1 with Boba U4 switches, some cheap clones of MG Ember keycaps, and potentially no silicone dampener. The idea is to get a quiet and lightweight but decent board for use on the couch. Then for my desk, a Keychron Q65 with Durock T1 switches and a clone of MG Monster caps.
thanks for this review it helped a lot! i’ll likely buy this or the GAS67 for my second build. i am interested for your follow up on this, so that if i buy this i can know exactly how to do each mod on this board!!
Thanks for checking out the vid and glad you found it helpful. Akko 5075 and V1 mod videos coming in the next couple weeks. Keep an eye out!
Can you send me a link to the non knob version because I’m not able to find it.Thank you
Its the same Amazon listing or you can get it from the Keychron site. Simply choose the non-knobbed option.
yeah, might have to try this one out some day
You totally should, man. Its got a very compelling price and feature set for dipping into larger layouts, for sure. Thanks for checking out the vid, man!
fr best budget board now
Definitely the best budget board on the market right now, hands down. I might be a little biased, though, since 75% exploded knob, lol
I left the pcb screws out on mine. It does seem to help dampen the thing a little since the vibrations arent transferred to the case right away.
When you say you left the PCB screws out do you mean you left the plate screws out or you just didnt use any screws for the tray mount mechanism?
oh great shoeman
Thanks for stopping by and glad you're enjoying the content!
Love swinging by and watching your videos!
Thanks for stopping by and checking out the vids!
Did you get this futher modded? got one too and thought it was a bit wobbely on the keys with my blue switches. Got premium caps so was wandering how to impove on it. Can be the switches or maybe its the board because you thought it were the cheap caps doing it.
Not sure what you mean by wobbly but I did a full mod on it here and was quite happy with the results: ruclips.net/video/E3piAvfl_kU/видео.htmlsi=uC9fFF6rs1zQVlLT
Did the keycap set come with a second set of grey keycaps for the ESC, enter buttons?
It does but you have to get the full kit from this listing here: collabs.shop/lze1zi
V1 vs K8 Pro?
The price difference is negligible.
I just want to know which one feels/sounds better stock. (I want to do as little modding as possible.)
Anyone who has tried both?
The sound and feel are going to be nearly identical. What it really comes down to is whether or not you want bluetooth and a full nav cluster. Yes, I have had both. I prefer 75% layout so I sold my K8.
@@punkshoo Thank you for the reply!
My pleasure and good luck with your keeb adventures!
Do you still recommending this one? Looking for my first custom kb without spending a lot. Gonna custom it in the future changing the keycaps bc I don't really like those. The cable it's not a problem for me bc I can get a better one and maybe the switches but bc I come fr a blackwidow 2019 with green clicky switches this kb seems really good. What do you say?
This or the Akko 5075S are some of the best budget friendly bare bones options if you're looking for a plastic 75% board. If you're looking for a metal one for a little bit more, check out the Monsgeek M1.
Great video. Is the knob infinite with clicks? Thank you.
Welcome and thank you! Glad you liked the video. The knob does turn infinitely with notches to indicate the rotation distance.
@@punkshoo Awesome. Ordered it after I saw your review. Cheers
Great video! I have one question. Does this still have functional rgb lighting? I type in the dark a lot and I like to see my keys. Thanks!
I am looking to costomise a v1
There is still RGB but it doesnt shine through anymore. You need shine through keycaps for that.
Would I be able to see the keys in the dark?
You will not be able to see backlit legends in the dark with non-shinethrough keycaps.
I have a question about the gentelmen keycaps to what keyboard did you bought the keycaps?
I actually received these are a bonus with my first mechanical keyboard purchase second hand locally. It was an Anne Pro 2.
@@punkshoo Ok thanks😀
@@punkshoo Oo and by the way very nice keycaps 😏
I cant put it back together after tape modding it how do i line up the screws😭
Puncture holes in the tape
@@punkshoo i did
@@punkshoo am i supposed to put any force onto it to get it in place cause im scared its brand new
@@punkshoo i did it i just put some pressure on it and it went it the holes in my tape werent big enough
I really like the video and will continue to watch you, but you probably should edit out the parts, where you readjust the focus on your camera, because you don't really talk over that anyways and it just makes the video slower, which sometimes makes peopla wanna quit out :)
I appreciate your viewership and your insights. Thank you for watching the content. Until the channel monetizes in a meaningful capacity I am stuck using this manual focus lens. Any insights on how I can cut 2-5 sec clips out of the video without disrupting the flow of the video visually? I like to think I've gotten better with the newer videos I've done but any tips are appreciated. I want to deliver the best content I can for my viewers.
@@punkshoo I personally am not really versed in video editing so I probably won't really be of any help to you but you could definitely look for references in other youtubers like Hipyo Tech which editing style I really like. I'm not advising to copy but to get yourself some references on how others edit this kind of content to get inspiraton for your own content. Your personality and way to present yourself and your channel is unique enough to be really enjoyable so taking bits and bits from others regarding editing or ideas is nothing to be ashamed of and it could potentially really help you grow your channel. Another thing I want to point out is the length of your videos which is quite long. Just from experience I think videos around a 15 minute margin are quite pleasent to watch without getting "distracted" I'd say. I hope I could maybe open up your view on this a little :)
@@punkshoo english is not my first language so please excuse any weird wording or sentence building i guess :)
Thanks for your insights. The styling of my videos is definitely something a bit different and doesn't cater to the algorithm. Long format isn't for everyone and I have been trying to figure out how to introduce ~10 min videos to the channel but it would not be the same format/style that viewers who like the long format have come to know me for. It would have to be something simple like a showcase and review vs simply spending time with a product and talking about it.
As for the editing suggestions: I don't think Hipyo's format is something that can be utilized on my end. Im not going to do "magic" cuts, I'd rather just cut and be authentic. Hipyo also intentionally records bits during his streams that are meant to be used in the features. He also has a camera that works in in-door lighting and an autofocus lens (both things I do not possess). I do want to say that I did attempt to cut out focusing cuts today while editing and it leaves those parts feeling a bit awkward to gain a whole 2-5 seconds 4-5 times during a video but I gave it a shot anyway. Let me know when the video launches tomorrow if you find it to be any better.
I am listening and I am trying to improve where I can. However, I will also not lose the authenticity of my long format content for the sake of shortening a video but I will continue to try and find a way to introduce shorter videos for those who do not have time to watch an entire 20-30 min video. I have been doing chapters for some time now and viewers are encouraged to skip around if they lack the time but still want the experience. Perhaps a short and concise 10 min video showcasing the product after I have done the build would be something to explore. If you have any other ideas for types of videos you would like to see please feel free to let me know. Thank you.
backlight are only RGB? Or only white is possible?
It has RGB as well
@@punkshoo and only white is possible?
Yes, you can do only white with VIA/QMK if you want.
Nice 👍
Thanks ✌
which one do you prefer, gas67 or this?
They are both pretty amazing but its also like comparing apples and oranges. Pick the layout you want and/or mounting style you want. Be sure to check out the modded V1 video I did. Of the 2 I prefer the look and sound of the modded V1 but if I were more into 65% board I would probably spend more time with the GAS67 to get it closer.
what are your thoughts on this and some of the akko 75s?
Both are great boards. Check out my video on the 5075S. Akko doesn't have QMK support or south facing sockets but the kit offering is superior in terms of stabs, switches, and caps. However, if you just want the barebones and want to dive deeper into the hobby then the V1 is the way to go for sure. The Akko PC75B Plus is antiquated at this point as far as I'm concerned since the 5075 sort of replaces it.
@@punkshoo I got to this one after your akko 507 video! Thanks for the quick and thorough response. I look forward to more vidoes!!!
always a good day when you post a new vid, I'm very interested in this keeb, especially as custom keebs intro gifts for friends.
Glad to hear you're enjoying the content and thank you for the love! This is definitely a nice budget keeb with a TON of non-budget features that would absolutely make for a wonder banger or gift for a friend/family member. Nice to see the budget community getting some decent boards finally.
What's your desk pad?
I picked it up from Amazon here: amzn.to/3fhmqO1
what about akko 5075 barebone?
What about it?
@@punkshoo As a recommended entry board over v1?
There are lots of great entry boards. It really just depends on what you're looking for in profile and features within a given budget. The Akko 5075 and Epomaker TH80 are good alternatives to the V1 in a similar price bracket.
keychron v1 or tecware veil 80?
V1 is far more feature-rich.
@@punkshoo can i ask what is the issue you see here in keychron v1 so far?
Other than being tray mount and not my favorite mounting style I have no issues with it so far.
Is the knob soldered in?
The rotary encoder is soldered, yes, but you can change the knob itself.. However, you can get this knobless if the knob isn't your style.
@@punkshoo Thanks for the info. I know that rotatory encoders are more than just a simple on/off switch, but I was hoping on the off chance that Keychron figured something out where you could have the best of both worlds with the knob version. Their exploded view render had my hopes up.
Can you elaborate? The rotary encoder has many functions and with QMK support on this board it can be remapped or even recoded in QMK itself.
@@punkshoo Hah, I was being dumb. A normal switch just detects an on/off signal based on whether the metal leaves inside the switch make contact. Hence, the hotswap socket only needs two pin connectors. A rotary encoder needs a minimum of 5 connectors for Ground, Voltage, the button, Out A for Data, and Out B for Clock.
On the Amazon page, it shows an exploded view of the keyboard which gives the impression that the encoder isn't soldered. So I made the stupid assumption of thinking that they were using an imaginary 2-pin encoder that could be moved around to different sockets on the board.
maybe it is just me but i didn't like the sound of the spacebar.
Much of the hobby is going to be preference. The whole build was kind of a miss for me and that is why I did a rebuild video. Came out SO much better. You should check it out.
Feels plasticity sounding... of cse for the price it is a great deal
Thanks for checking out the vid! I agree. The build didn't turn out as expected. Stay tuned for the rebuild!
I love the pricepoint and layout of this board, but this thing sounds like garbage no matter what you do to it. I've been testing with foams and a POM plate I bought off etsy, and nothing makes this thing sound good. I use it at work, so I finally just bought some silent switches so I don't have to think about it anymore.
My modded Bakeneko65 wasn't much more money and it sounds absolutely heavenly. Wish they'd make a Bakeneko75.
Sounds like you just have a sound preference that this board doesn't cater to. Check the 2nd video I did with this board. It sounds fantastic.
@@punkshoo You're absolutely right, I didn't mean to crap on your video or experience, I'm just frustrated with my experience with this board in the sound department, I just feel I wasted time in money. I still love the keyboard as my work keyboard, and honestly the silent switches I got were probably the best for the office anyway, I don't think people want to hear even the best sounding keyboard radiating out of my office haha.
