    It is freaking hilarious because as they went to more modern Gen consoles, they literally told all their stores to stop taking in and selling GBA, XBOX, other older system items, and after that they tossed A LOT of their inventory... now they want to bring "RETRO" back...

    • @e.corellius4495
      @e.corellius4495 4 месяца назад +11

      if you dig into it, they couldn't actually thow the old games out, it was legally impossible to dump that much, so it all just warmed some warehouses until now. this is them just selling off that old inventory in desperation. thats why the stock was so pitiful and the managers aren't getting more, its literally just their old unsold stock being shipped to the nearest store, praying it all sells intime to give the board of directors one last big bonus before the company goes under.

    • @philipb1059
      @philipb1059 4 месяца назад +2

      What digging did you do? Because a simple web search of "Can gamestop throw away old games" came up with references to RUclipsrs that dumpster dive Gamestops a bunch in 2014(A post made by IGN. A well known reporting company on all thing gamer related), finding hundreds of dollars in games and hardware.
      I was going to write you a comment reminiscing the videos that I remember ten years ago, but this little search made my point for me.
      They wouldn't make something like that public on their own because of said legality when the producers find out they spent money to make something that businesses are throwing away...

    • @e.corellius4495
      @e.corellius4495 4 месяца назад

      @@philipb1059 its a matter of logistics, dont look at rumor or videos about individual stores "making room" for new product by throwing out stuff just not selling, that is on the individual managers. look directly at the money, what the company bought, when, and how much was sold, and how much was written off as a loss (that one is what gets thrown out) not all product goes directly to the stores, there are warehouses that get filled up, and the product there is what get shipped to stores but only as sales empty space in the stores. i managed one for them for 3 years, it was just a big tin building stacked with crates of games that went nowhere, some of them had been there a very long time, some crates were labeled with the babbages (a game store chain bought out that would later become gamestop) logo still. all just sitting there because nobody bought them.
      hence my theory about the new "retro" stores, they are just finally using all the stuff in those crates. the execs know the company is going under, so they had to figure out how to get product without buying more, so they could sell enough to squeeze out a few more bonuses and raise the companies value before selling it off in pieces.

      They made the pivot way too late. They used to clearance old inventory for $2-$5 in big dump bins at the center of the store. When the pandemic happened and people were stuck at home, everyone spent money to upgrade their gaming and home theater setups, making retro gaming skyrocket in price.
      Now Gamestop is trying to hop on the bandwagon, but they got rid of all their old games, and since they're all out-of-print, getting more inventory is expensive and difficult.

    I really don't understand why people hate on Gamestop so much, definitely has its flaws but resellers have inflated the prices of retro games so heavily that Gamestop is a common good for the overall video game market. More game stores increases competition, more competition leads to lower prices. I grew up with Gamestop as the only reasonable game store near me in every state I have lived in, the midnight releases still bring back so many nostalgic moments. Criticism is important but there is no reason any real video game enthusiast wants less game stores. Gamestop is clearly attempting to fill inventory on retro games so it will take time, this is definitely the right direction, but this is still a new selling model for them.

      @@jat102491 You will always get more money selling an item yourself through ebay or another third party resell application. Any store that buys inventory will always short change you for the convenience of cash on hand. I agree sometimes they offer maybe 20-30% of the items worth but you have to take into consideration that the item now sits in inventory waiting to be moved. You literally don't have to sell them your items, but having it as an option for immediate cash incase of an emergency is nice considering there isn't many places you can take unwanted items for immediate cash.

Now they want to charge retro gaming prices for older games, but they can't get more inventory without paying those prices. That's why that Retro store had nothing, and since those games are out of print and mostly in the hands of collectors, Gamestop's not going to be making a profit if they have to buy old games at market-rate off eBay like everyone else.

The strangest part is that the one Gamestop in the area they chose to make a retro store is directly across the street from a local game store that carries everything from the old Atari consoles up to the current gen. I haven't been back to check out their selection but I doubt they will have anything near what that other store has, especially since the local shop has almost triple the floor space of the Gamestop.

    These are extremely sad. One thing to keep in mind surrounding stores are supposed to send retro games to retro stores but they don’t. What’s the incentive? To drive up another stores profits?
    This is howit was explained to me.

    lol GameStop can’t do retro, because they can’t get the games, no one is going to pawn their stuff to them that hasn’t already.
    These systems are now in collections, I would never sell my old games now. It’s a fail concept.
