Great interview, thanks very much! The last surviving U-Boat commander passed a few years ago, so these interviews became our last remaining link with that service. The causality rates speak volumes for the courage and dedication of all WWII submariners. Bravo!
I love these uploads. Id really appreciate hearing from the soldiers who returned from the eastern front war with Russia now those interviews will be treasured for generations around the world.. Big facts.
That was a very pleasant surprise, I really enjoyed hearing this man speak, the interviewer was great too, well considered questions. This german had a bit of a devil in him. Thank you for this Frederick.
@@M1945 yes I agree. I read a book called “hurler’s secret weapons” and in it they said one British convoy of 20 ships was reported to destroyed entirely and and it was a type 21 that did it. And also after the war in 1946 the US navy tested it and even when the Type 21 was 200 meters away they still couldn’t detect it.
He wasn't saying that the 21 wasn't a dangerous weapon, he merely was stating that it's ability to stay underwater was severely limited. that it was really more of a surface vessel capable of diving for short periods. @@reginaldmcnab3265

@@joggerino3284 am means at the. So a literal translation would be Submarines at the enemy. But against and chasing/attacking are good translations that catch the meaning better.
I kind of doubt that the 21 series boats could really have turned the war around for the Germans, but they would potentially have extended the war by years. The landing in Normandy for example would have been unthinkable without that massive unfathomable amount of war materials and weapons being shipped from the US to the UK almost unhindered. The same could be said for the Eastern front where the Soviets received unimaginable amounts of weapons and materials from the US via the North Atlantic.
Yes it was a U-Boot. What happened is that the definition of U-Boot changed during the war when the Type XXI came out. All submarine designs before this were similar to the Type VII. It was nothing less than a revolution. But the Type VII truly was a U-Boot. Version 1.0 you could say. Or first generation.
Well, whether it was or wasn't is not for me to decide. Being a U Boot captain his opinion certainly has some weight. It is an interesting way to think of the question . . . .
Type VII was of second generation at least. WW2 submarines were superior to WW1 submarines in every possible way. I'm currently reading a book about the history of submarines written by a naval warfare expert. The book begins with the definition of submarine and instantly brings the same thing on the table: using the name 'unterseeboot' for watercrafts which were mostly operated on surface and had very limited underwater capabilities is a bit misleading. But that is what they were and are called anyway.
At least the interviews in near postwar period weren't all as if the questions were thought up by 12 yr olds. After 1975 the quality of questions and questioners all went downhill.
Not going to finish this video. The key word that neither of you mentioned is "SUBMERSIBLE", as the Kapitain tried to point out the "U" in U-BOOT is not for "Unterwasser BooT". The Type VII was not truly a submarine, able to dive for an indeterminate length of time, it was rather a submersible boat, capable of diving (Tauchen) length, limited by: CO2 levels in crew compartment air and Cl levels in battery compartment becoming TOO HIGH, while running submerged. And, Oxygen level and charge on batteries becoming TOO LOW. Then, they were forced to surface (Auftauchen), to replenish Oxygen and recharge the batteries by running on diesel motors, all while surfaced. The basics of operating a submersible boat.
When you start with "not going to finish this video" your level of pomposity raises to 11. This is an ORIGINAL U-Boot commander and whatever information you regurgitate, correct or incorrect, is nothing compared to the value of whatever he says. He is a primary historical source and you .... don't have time for him?

U-Boots against the enemy

"am" means "close to". Here, it can also mean U-Boot closely following/chasing the enemy (Feind).
