1:53 *WOW!* That noise you slammed into my headphones just about knocked me out of my chair. I missed several seconds that came after that and had to rewind to hear what you had to say. Also the earthquake shaking the frame earlier was off putting also. If you are trying to stand out from other people talking about writing topics, I think this is a poor way to do that. You might try something subtle. Don't make me sea sick and deaf. I just *SUBSCRIBED!* Don't make me regret it.
I love Brandon Sanderson's books. His books make me really care about the characters and now, after 60 years of only sci-fi, I enjoy his fantasy. His BYU lectures are fantastic too. That's why I'm watching this video. I want to hear your take on it. Oh yes, I'm 72 now, retired and learning to write stories ... finally. Something to do between now and when I'm dead.
    Thanks for an exciting channel.

Thanks for the feedback...I will definitely need to start doing my post-editing checks with headphones, since I didn’t notice this without them. Sorry for the loud noise!
Yes, I love Brandon Sanderson’s BYU lectures!! So exciting to be getting into the writing journey!

This whole video is great, but at 9:15ish when you're talking about how the book acts don't have to correspond to the published structure (seasons, for you).... I needed to hear that! I was subconsciously struggling with that lately.
.... I've been messing with the Story Grid, but I'm going to look at Sanderson's outline now.

So glad to hear you got something from the video! The Story Grid is great...but I've found it somewhat less great for planning/drafting - this method was AWESOME for drafting!

I'm glad this worked so well for you! I watched a previous version of a lecture series he did--not sure if this new one has the same topics or not? But I'll definitely have to check it out!

    • @NicoleWilbur
      @NicoleWilbur  3 года назад

I think it's fairly similar topics each time - I've seen a different version as well, and I still really loved watching the 2020 lectures!

Consider adding in chapters to the video so we can jump to things if some of us have short attention spans

Honestly, it’s RUclips studio free music - one of the few songs that’s upbeat and not too cheesy 😛

Sorry, there is an youtuber Abbie Emmons who I follow. She uses the three acts method but its different than the other three act method. I use it twice. The first is general for the chapter then goes into the scenes of Abbie Emmons scenes. Going deeper doing the thee act method again.
Before I do 3 act method I do 5 lines
    Character:
    Character Desire:
    Character Fear:
    Character Misbelief:
    Character Learns:

Why are you sorry haha!? Abbie Emmons is awesome - I’ve watched her videos on scenes as well! Your method seems super duper cool!! I love that idea of the desire and what the character learns!

@@NicoleWilbur Character Learns: is the theme of the chapter or the deep scene to drive the character to do what they need to do.
I tried Sanderson's outline method but I didn't have the drive of the characters in order to stay with Sanderson's method.

@@NicoleWilbur I live in the US; but emotionally I’ve always felt like Canada is my ‘other’ home. Every summer for years I would drive to Ontario and camp in Algonquin Park; later on in life I worked for two years in Vancouver BC. So I’ve seen the country at both ends.
