Not exactly: It’s true that bad bosses like this are RARELY called out on their atrocious behavior, much less held accountable for it; but that doesn’t mean that situations like this episode NEVER happen in reality. There ARE real-life occasions, however rare, when people like Mr. Banner are either CALLED OUT and/or PUNISHED (either by demotion or termination) for abusing both their power and employees. All it takes is one worker courageous enough to call them out directly and quit, or to quietly gather evidence of the boss’s misdeeds, send it to the higher ups, and watch the storm unfold. The reason this doesn’t happen more often? 1) Most workers are reluctant to speak up for fear of retaliation; 2) they can’t afford to quit their jobs; 3) HR or the higher-ups don’t care enough about the employees (if at all) to do anything; or 4) the bad boss has friends in high places who protect him or her.

Odd to see Mark Linn-Baker playing a different character in the Family Matters universe since FM originally spun off of Perfect Strangers where Harriette worked at the Chronicle with Larry and Balki.
Family Matters was a spinoff of the show Perfect Strangers. Mark Linn Baker was one of the lead characters. It is a pleasant surprise to see him as a different character in the show. PS I always loved Harriett in Family Matters. She was the backbone of the family. ❤
What's confusing about this is that Family Matters and Perfect Strangers are in the same universe, yet Mark is Larry in Perfect Strangers. But he's Mr. Banner in Family Matters.
This is I believe the second of two times where Harriette gets a positive outcome in the workplace after taking a stand. The first time happened in the episode "Two Family Income" when she fights to get a security job at the Chronicle. Both instances end with a scene on the phone that has Harriette doing such a good job at acting that the audience expects a negative outcome only to be surprised.
This same thing happened one time at my workplace where the boss made fun of a woman's looks after making fun of a guy's looks. We were all so disgusted and shocked he went there that he was fired at the end of the day.
Harriet character started on Perfect Strangers which Family Matters is a spin off of. It’s good to see “Cousin Larry” play this character as her boss! Harriet worked with him on Perfect Strangers.
I never liked that they replaced Jo Marie to have someone portray Harriette, I thought that was dumb. Nothing against Judyann Elder. I believe the producers knew ahead of time that Jo Marie was leaving the series. What they should have done was reduce Harriette's appearance or write off Harriette from the series and the explanation would be that Harriette had gotten a transfer from her job to where Rachel was staying at. Then imagine Harriette taking care of the sick relative that Rachel was looking after all along and then Rachel replacing Harriette in the household with a steady boyfriend and doing the romantic scenes instead of what Carl and Harriette could have done.
When I met Mark Linn Baker and mentioned this episode of Family Matters he said he didn’t like playing that part. He did a great job playing a verbally abusive boss. Too many jobs have them.

Many school principals are a lot like Benner, here. Unfortunate reality seeing as they're in charge of a delicate environment involving children...but nonetheless they'll treat adults this way in front of said children w/ zero remorse or shame. Ever wonder why instances of bullying are so high and so many are tragic enough to make the news? It's because the 'role model adults' are behaving like this in front of impressionable young minds, and making it look like treating other people like dirt is 'okay'. I will say this though, what's MORE accurate is how satisfying it is to tell a bully boss off in front of your colleagues and being the ONE PERSON who finally called out their bad behavior and nasty disposition before finally leaving.

This is so real. Companies demand all this work out of minimal staff, then rage about overtime
IRL that would be a labor code violation, and insulting the employee would be sexual discrimination
The ending was just the cherry on top of this cathartic episode
I like how Carl is supportive, even with potentially losing half the households income. Most dudes would flip their shit
Can't believe they reunited since Perfect Strangers
How many people even remember that "Family Matters" was a spinoff of "Perfect Strangers"?
@@ryanloftis1125 I do.
@@ryanloftis1125 I do. That's why this seems odd.
@@ryanloftis1125Me! And as a life long Chicagoian, I know exactly where they were employed at the Chicago Chronicle. It used to be downtown, but it's gone out of business now.
Ooo I love it! I thought i had seen every episode, somehow i missed this one...(or just don't remember). And yes it DOES feel good to quit a horrible job! 😄
Even though this show may have seemed like a silly TV sitcom to some people it did have its fair share of feel good moments. And despite the hilarity this show did manage to embrace several issues.
I would Imagine the OG Vivian Banks would not only Tear him a New One But walked out like she Owned the place in the same situation. Hahahahahaha 😂😂😂😂
A HR complaint would have been filed yesterday.
Classic show I loved it as a kid growing up
Just a hard working mother taking care of her family this is what the world needs more of family matters one of TV best sitcoms ever appreciate you guys thanks job well done you should be amazed and proud love you guys thanks ! Joe
If only it worked like this in real life and you can put an abusive boss in their place and still have a job or a better one
Well said Harriet!! I'm SO proud of her!!
It’s sad when bosses abuse their power and just fire someone for being called out shows cowardice
Yeah I know
Odd to see Mark Linn-Baker playing a different character in the Family Matters universe since FM originally spun off of Perfect Strangers where Harriette worked at the Chronicle with Larry and Balki.
Apparently Larry had ANOTHER cousin!
Also don't forget Full House
Family Matters was a spinoff of the show Perfect Strangers. Mark Linn Baker was one of the lead characters. It is a pleasant surprise to see him as a different character in the show. PS I always loved Harriett in Family Matters. She was the backbone of the family. ❤
I quit. That felt better.
What's confusing about this is that Family Matters and Perfect Strangers are in the same universe, yet Mark is Larry in Perfect Strangers. But he's Mr. Banner in Family Matters.
And Jesse's cousin in law in full house
I sure miss em ol days waitin for this show n Marie Jo givin us Strong Mother vibes on CBC Canada
Larry got so mad about Harriet getting her own show, he done went and changed his name.
Bless her for having a husband that didnt take it as a loss but a lesson n knew his wife deserved better
Mr. Derick Benner was such a great heel character that Harriette really stood up against.
I miss seeing a tv show with two parents in it! 😭
Parents who actually have great chemistry with each other.
I miss seeing reality with two parents in it. 😭
@@wturner777 everything is about momma

How Come Carl Didn't Tell Him Off?
One of the best scenes
Oh man, I remember seeing this back when it first aired and laughing so loud with Harriet
When I met Mark Linn Baker and mentioned this episode of Family Matters he said he didn’t like playing that part. He did a great job playing a verbally abusive boss. Too many jobs have them.
Harriet was more terrifying than Carl when angry
facts
We need more people like her.
Harriet was always the voice of reason in the family and on the show.
This was one of her last episodes on the series. They shouldn’t have replaced Harriet and just left her off like they did Rachel.
❤😂😂😅😊😊😊😊one of tv best sitcoms ever to the actors and actresses who passed away my thoughts are with your family you may be gone but not forgotten still going strong after all these just a hard working lady named harriet Winslow on family matters always a classic to watch great job great people you should be amazed and proud much love and respect and appreciation job well done you should be amazed and proud way to go stay safe and warm out there !!! Joe
Harriet was loving and kind but didn't take any you know what. I loved that about her.
Cousin Larry became a real jerk.
Well, obviously in this episode. That's not the same character but the same actor l o l
The mistake Harriette made was saying she quit. Let them pay that unemployment!
Carl and Harriet should have done the Dance of Joy to bring things full circle.
