Jared is an artist who is not afraid to share his genius. It’s refreshing to see behind the curtain to a forensic process. Great vid, boys.
So I've been watching y'all for about 2 years and have learned almost everything I know about whiskey from you two. The other day my friend Patrick gave me a shirt from the crowded barrel and I honestly almost cried. If you see this, and when you see him Daniel, just let him know Jason said thank you again. Honestly have never received such an awesome gift. Keep making awesome videos :)
19:07 Wow, before this point i was thinking 'Jared has such an incredible knowledge and perception of whiskey and what he would like to do with it.' and then he started talking about 'set a release date' and it reminded me of something guitarist Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal said. "Every day you get half way to perfection, but it's impossible to achieve perfection. Even if you have infinite time... you're not the same person today as you were yesterday, and your idea of perfection has changed, so make your work a representation of how you feel at that time and get it out there for the rest of the world to enjoy, so you can move on to creating something else amazing." And with that, i now realise creating beautiful whiskey is an artform. I've never thought of it like that before. Thank you Jared for sharing your creations and wisdom with all of us.
Most intriguing episode of the Whiskey Tribe I’ve watched to date. Nerding out at Balcones! As one still in search of THE whiskey, blending whiskey opens doors I hadn’t even considered. Thanks, Gents!
I wish I would have known about blending my own a long time ago! You guys gave me the idea of blending a 50/50 mix of Laphroaig 10 with Bourbon awhile back, and my sipping life was changed forever! Your episode about High West Campfire sent me down that path, and I have tried it with several Bourbons, including Wild Turkey 101, Buffalo Trace, and Elijah Craig, it was intensely complex and savory each time. My senses are not as honed as you guys, but for me, Laphroaig 10's smokey brine marries perfectly with the sweet oak Bourbons.
Wild River Tom I’ve been digging deep into my Corryvrecken and Lore and I generally prefer Lagavulin so my Laphroig/Ardbeg 10 have taken a back seat lately. I’m definitely going to give this a try. Any recommended starting point?

Great video! Love Balcones too! Going up to a local distillery with the local Facebook page and bourbon club, to do a tour and personal blending and bottling!! So this was a great hype video.
Absolutely amazing episode. So much cool information. Balcones has become my friend and my favorite US whiskey. Definitely in the top 3 for both of us. We plan on visiting Balcones in the near future and I can't wait to hang out all day and talk with everyone there.
I know nothing but that’s never stopped me before. I’m starting a couple of infinity bottles tonight. I think blending might be my retirement hobby. May even learn something. Wish Balcones was a little easier to get for me.
So after watching this I ended up watching the Waterford distillery tour episode by chance and my mind is blown and racing with the possibilities. The blending options but also the option to start going into wine territory with whisky, specific grain sources and “vintages”. Could make for great single cask releases but could make “home blending” so much more interesting. If only the distilleries could go this way.
I love how there's always different, random, subtle flavors.... "This one's got a real olive oil, citrus, lavender note with slight dry walnut skin coming through, while yours has a very district fresh water eel, apple stems, armadillo, flying spaghetti monster with a hint of smokey, dried grande coconut milk latte peat."
I love this television experience way more than T.V(vague). Thank you for sharing stuff like this. Very special watch. Very cool. I'm trying Balcones next.
Can we get a episode about water sourcing? I feel like I haven’t heard a lot about it, but I know distilleries like laphroaig have had to go to battle to protect theirs.
Thats the reasoning behind the name of Balcones, Scottish tradition distilleries would name themselves after their water source. The Balcones Fault in Texas is where Balcones initially draws it’s water from for production and proofing. The Balcones Fault is also their logo.
Tasting notes have always made me laugh. It's hard to explain to my non-whiskey drinking friends and family why burnt rubber, asphalt, dead leaves, wilting fruit, or dank basement books and records are ok in their drink. Their response... you eat asphalt, we need to talk about how much your drinking.
Same in the cigarworld. Trying to explain the hints of "dark chocolate mixed with a bit of sand" in a nice cigar to a non cigarsmoker is like trying to explain string theory to a 3yo.
@@AlphaOneActual It's only like 30 some hours of driving... just a quick hop. Well worth it to spend the apocalypse with a lifetime supply of Balcones, right?
So after watching this video I tried something with my "Low budget" bottles and was quite satisfied for a first attempt. So here is my mix: 2 part of Dewer's white label 1 part of Johnnie Walker 1 part of Jim Beam and 1/2 part of Knob creek In my opinion, this gave me a super smooth "Blend" that still lacks complexity. Super cream coated with honey. But now I really want to break down the barriers and try something else by adding a few years old aging in mini oak barrel to the house.
SO good! Thank you. Now I’m going to go confront those expensive bottles I’ve been worshipping as gospel, smile and say “wait until you see what I can do, suckers!”

Hey guys thanks for the insights as always. My whiskey journey is made so much better with the knowledge you share. I just picked up my first Laphroaig quarter cask today and am now fully ready to admit that I am a scotch man. I love the smokey notes it offers as well as the natural complexity of whiskey in general. On the topic of blending though, I am wanting to start an infinity bottle of my own and just wondered if I'd be better starting two, one for islay scotches and one for other whiskeys as it seems the smokiness would overpower more subtle notes offered by other whiskeys. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks again for the amazing content.
