    I am working on a house that was built in 1951 with a similar setup but a major difference. The hot 14/2 wire feeds a duplex outlet and 3 way switch at the door leading from the garage into the kitchen. A 14/3 wire runs from the two gang box to a single gang junction box at the overhead garage door opening as shown in your video. The difference is a 14/2 wire runs from the light back to the 2 gang box by the kitchen rather than to the 3 way switch by the overhead door.
    The white wire from the hot 14/2 is connected to pigtails going to the duplex outlet and the white 14/2 wire from the light. The black wire from the hot is connected to pigtails going to the duplex outlet and the common screw on the 3 way switch. The white wire on the 14/3 is coded black and is connected to the black wire from the 14/2 wire from the light on one end and is connected to the common terminal on the 3 way switch by the overhead door. The red and black traveler wires on the 14/3 are connected to the traveler termals as in the video..
    This method of wiring is called a dead end 3 way and is used when it is easier to add a 3 way switch by running a 14/3 wire between two switch junction boxes rather than from the light to a new switch box The disadvantage of this setup is that you can't continue on with additional switches because there is no neutral wire in the new switch box. This could cause a problem with some of the new "smart" switches that require a neutral and some jurisdictions may prohibit this method. I think your viewers would like to see a video on this setup because it is hard to find on RUclips and is something you might find in older houses.

      Metal box saved my house from burning down. My home was made in the 1970's has Aluminum wire the hot water heater was replaced by a licensed contractor from an old school electric to a new heat pump. The old water heater someone had put a timer box on the wall terminated the Aluminum wire into the timer box it was type you see used for years on a pool pump. Then whip from the water heater terminated into the same box. The plumbing contractor spent all day working on it last part was the timer removal. He took some old yellow wire nuts just connected the Aluminum to copper I didn't see him do this. A week went by I noticed the water was cold I went out saw the breaker was tripped I turned it back on and after about 5 minutes I noticed a black streak up the wall I shut the breaker off take the single gang cover off where the whip went into the wall box cover wire insulation is melted back to the clamp in the metal box. What saved me was the wire melted back to the clamp when the insulation burned off it grounded the hot wire to the grounded box tripped the 50 amp breaker. If I didn't have a metal box I'm not sure it would have tripped there was a common wire with that 220V wire.

    Thanks for your video and step by step instructions.
    I recently added a 120V receptacle to my three way hall lighting using your video instructions. For reasons I cannot explain the outlet is non-operative. With the lights off the tester shows
    “Hot/neutral reversed”. With the lights on tester shows “Hot/Ground reversed “.
    The wiring is according to your description but the outlet is not working!
    There’s a pigtail neutral from the spliced neutral to the outlet and a pigtail from the power source to the outlet. The grounds are spliced together.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

      @illestofdemall13 3 года назад

      @@SparkyChannel Also in hospitals ground are up,. One example is that if a piece of metal falls between the plug and the receptacle, it's most likely going to hit the ground and avoid a short circuit or ground fault. This keeps life saving equipment running without issues. Another good reason to have ground up is if you are using metal device covers. If it should somehow come loose and fall down and jam between the plug and receptacle, it would only hit the ground and not hurt anyone nor would it trip a breaker.

    • @KevinBenecke
      @KevinBenecke 3 года назад

      @@SparkyChannel Not only that. A lot of home grade devices that have a right angle plug with a ground such as a fridge have the plugs with the ground on the bottom which would cause a sharp bend in the wire if the ground was up. You would have to run and pigtale another 12/2 cable with ground from the hot box to the other box to carry the "line" wire power to attach to the recepticle so it would be "constant" on.

    • @Marcel_Germann
      @Marcel_Germann 3 года назад +1

      It isn't that easy. I would always hardwire the generator to the installation, feeding the most necessary circuits like the fridge and the heating system. Eventually a well if you got one. The thing is, you must ensure that only one supply is connected to your installation. Either the generator or the grid, but not both at the same time. That would be a very bad thing for several reasons.
      1. If the installation is connected to the energized grid and you connect your running generator that would blow up your generator and blow the main fuse, or trip the main circuit breaker of your installation. Your generator is not synchronized to the grids voltage and frequency, so that would be a massive short-circuit.
      2. If there's a power outage and you connect your generator without disconnecting your installation from the grid, you would create a backfeed to the grid. That would endanger personell working on power line, because the power line would become live from the other end...
      This is called a transfer switch, you can get automatic systems which detect a power outage, start the generator and disconnect the grid and connect the generator automatically. The power is back within 15s for the important circuits. But these systems are expensive. You can also get a manual transfer switch. Depending on the dimension of the switch (how many amps can it switch), the cost is round about 200 Euros (250 USD).
      Actually this is not a DIY project...you require at least someone who helps you with the planning an the wiring of this.

    Hi Bill from Sparky Channel
    Very very interesting video today.
    Loved it but it now I need to know.
    When filing for a permit, is that basic plan you showed then typically what you submit all the time with the permit application?
    You know I like learning code but working with the code enforcer and the process is also of interest.
    Also wonder why ground to be upside down, but I’m sure there’s a purpose.
    Thanks for another more than fantastic video.
    Love your channel, especially today.

    • @SparkyChannel
      @SparkyChannel  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Jeff! It's a very simplified version. Architects usually put a great number of items on the same drawing. This drawing was just showing one item so that viewers not very familiar with plans can follow it. The draftsman may prefer grounds up or the owner may prefer it. As an electrician, if it's called out, you must do it that way. There is no code saying receptacles must be ground up or grounds down.

    • @Jeff-Lawrence
      @Jeff-Lawrence 3 года назад

      @@SparkyChannel So do you ever submit your own drawings when just doing a basic upgrade?
      Wondering because the application always asks for plans or drawings. But maybe that’s just for big projects or new construction

    • @MarkLawry
      @MarkLawry 3 года назад +1

      As a home owner, I submitted a plan like that for adding receptacles to a utility room and moving an electric dryer. Plan was approved. At rough-in inspection they wanted egc pigtails but no devices. At final inspection they checked that it worked. I drew my plans by hand based on what I saw in a how-to book. I included notes about TR receptacles, emt conduit, etc. The inspector was very helpful, and liked that I had labeled the wires and circuits.

    • @SparkyChannel
      @SparkyChannel  3 года назад

      @@Jeff-Lawrence Oh yes, I've submitted plans very often. Workers really like my plans because I keep them simple by making more drawings and not trying to put everything on one drawing. Both contractors and homeowners can really benefit from being able to make drawings for an addition, a deck etc. And workers should learn how to work from the drawings. You would have to call your city and ask as to what needs a drawing and what doesn't but you're correct, most upgrades do need a drawing.

    • @aurvaroy6670
      @aurvaroy6670 2 года назад +2

      There are neutrals present in both boxes. In the first box it's obvious. In the second box, Bill used a 3 conductor lever nut, instead of a 2 conductor one, for the neutrals to allow for a smart switch. Just because there's no neutral pigtail present in a box doesn't mean it goes against code. You should pay closer attention next time.

      @@SparkyChannel I am OCD and I do tend to catch mistakes. Sometimes I catch my own just in time. If you are looking at the face of a device, the open end of the wire loop on the right side terminals will always be up, and the open end of the wire loop on the left side terminals will always be down. I also tend to turn the switch in whichever direction I need to in order to work comfortably from the same position, starting with the ground. I may have to turn the switch upside down in order to do this, then put it right side up to continue with the line and load (or line and neutral, depending on device). Great video as usual, though.
