it was the Spanish🇪🇸 sailor and Explorer Juan Sebastian El Cano that first went around the world! 💕🇪🇸 from Brazil where 🇧🇷 also *1st. discovered by another Spaniard Vicente Yanez Pinzon!!* 💕🇪🇸
Magalhães also was in major events (Battle of Diu - 1509 - India) Conquest of Malacca Emçpire Sultanate - 1511 etc - Explorations in the Indian Ocean andon SouthEast Asia for over 7 years. He, Magellan, for sure - as fact and history - as Henrique of Malacca, as probably Duarte Barbosa , João Carvalho, João Serrão ad others - if they were beyond East of Malacca, trought the Indonesian Archipelago and the Pacific Ocean (as António de Abreu, Francisco Serrão, Jorge Alvares and others) or in Malacca - they were the first around the whole World - getting to the same region they were. Amazing vision.
A well done documentary video. But with some inaccuracies. F.Magalhaes was a guy just like any other guy of our days. That worked for the Portuguese crown on their shipping businesses. In the end he got injured and struggled to find another decent job in Portugal. And the Spanish gave him that decent job. And then he invented lots of new jobs by daring to pursue excellence rather than just more of the same limitations. His name definitely deserves to be rementioned on our days and in the future.
There was no "Carta de naturaleza" as was for a Columbus´s brother Bartolomeu, to make him a King of Castile Subject, to take the same rights of a "castilian natural". Even the Aragonese were different with their own laws. The People were Genoese, other, Portuguese(Natural), but became Castillian subjects (also) in some cases. ("Spanish citizen" its a modern adapted wrong word). Not properly Magellan as far we know, but he have a loyalty to Charles V ( and I) to this enterprise and commerce.
Well my friend, check better your sources :)In Portugal is simply thought to have been a "navegador" ou "descobridor" Português who's biggest achievement was made on service of the spanish crown, like many other experienced and skilful portuguese navigators, "Sebastião Rodrigues Soromenho" or "João Rodrigues Cabrilho"... None of they are seen as traitors. Moreover, you are right, in Portugal there isn't one monument for Magalhães, there are several ;)so check your sources or visit the country!
@emmthreejonny hehe i just realized now.. rumors telling me lies lol tnx :D but before Magellan come to Cebu and Mactan im wondering if they speak bisaya or Tagalog? >.
lo, no there was no name changing... Magallanes or Magellan are just adapted translitered from Magalhães, simply because English and Spanish languages can't reproduce most of the Portuguese language phonetics, namely (but not only) the nasals in this case. It's like me saying that Nélio Armestrongue walked on the Moon. Luckily, we are in the modern times and we are educated and we can write, not the case back in the 16th century...
Man, I don't really know where you got those sources, but you are redundantly wrong, there are plenty of monuments Fernão de Magalhães in Portugal. Besides the one you mentioned, you have at least one in Praça do Chile, Lisboa and one in Sabrosa (his home place), and of course you have more spread through the country and world. Just google it ;)
first of all, he is not better known as Fernando Magallanes, that's just plain spanish speaking native egocentrism ;) He is better known as Ferdinand Magellan, due to the anglo-saxon dominance in the media. However after the popular name, the referred name is usually Fernão de Magalhães, for being is original name in his mother tongue, Portuguese. Secondly, you just helped in my explanation, Magalhães (not Magalhaes - do a copy paste if needed) passes to Magallanes due to linguistic limitations
+stangeriam Well your wrong smartass. Magellan was an explorer not a conquistador. He was not out to conquer and murder he was on spice trade. Your malicious story doesn't hold any ground. The famous Italian chronicler/historian Antonio Pigafetta was with him and these people were not looking for trouble.
Dillon Lee is that so... your telling me that new places of exploration in all of history did not involve theft of resources and murderous ways? What planet are you living on? Navigating/exploration are terms used for historic murderers. Monarchies pushed for trade routes, enslavement, theft of resources, conquering over real estate etc. Who do you think funded Magellan? Typical thugs rape and pillage with a cross in one hand, then holding a sword with the other
+stangeriam This is your problem, you are looking at how the world worked more than 500 years ago with a judgmental 'modern' mindset and this is why you're always on the "offended" mode and just label how they were all murderers, enslavers, conquerors.. like a little child who couldn't get their way. You shouldn't be tackling history if you're just going to cry and accuse everyone because they were born in a ruthless world and time. I can't let you just go about tarnishing everyone with your accumulated stereotypes. Magellan was no conqueror he was born serving in the royalty in the Queen's household and heard stories of explorers as a boy and wanted to be one - and he did. He didn't go about killing natives, enslaving and whatever malicious labels you have (Queen Isabela was well-known for her anti-slavery stance because it was against her religion). Magellan even refused to accept Rajah Humabon's (King of Cebu island) request to kill a native marauder chieftain (given name Lapu-Lapu) seeing it was better to talk to Lapu-Lapu and introduced the chief to Christianity to which according to well-known Italian chronicler Antonio Pigafetta, who was with Magellan, said Magellan wearing an officer's uniform was singled out by the natives armed with with spears and thick scimitars and killed Magellan an ambush not in an epic battle. Grow up!
Dillon Lee ahm...excuse me big shot. You best be looking back in your previous comments as who is childish. You come storming in calling me a 'smart ass'...all because I question the history books. That is what is called 'critical thinking'? Never heard of such a thing have you? I have a right to make an assumption or any comment i'd like. What an oppressor you are. You trust history books? Never heard of the famous quote "the victors write the history books'? Much of the current day is propaganda filled new feed..you believe the mass majority of that also ..do you not? because im not an apathetic/conformist..Your offended.. Well, as of now, the internet is open for discussions..sorry about your authoritarian stance
My ancestors are from Toledo, Spain. I am so thankful that Magellan arrived in the Philippines.

@benjamin80ify ??? wtf . My point is Spain has nothing to do with the Phillipines Politically and also somewhat culturally.

To make a long story short.. A currently glorified Magellon was groomed to be a murderous conqueror for the Royalty/Catholic church.
The end..
