    Just picked up a 92 Panther today with no spark. Saw your video and jumped the 4 plug and got spark just like you said, then I jumped the 2 plug kill switch and found the problem. Bad kill switch. Took me 9 minutes to watch the video and 5 minutes to find the problem lol. Great video bud, without you I might have parted this sled out!

    Thank you. This helped get our sled running today 97 Artic Cat 580. Had a 'closed' system but didn't jump the wires. It was the TSS in the end.

    Thanks for the video. I just brought a ‘96 ZRT 600 back to life after sitting for the last 12 years. After getting no spark I assumed it was the coils or stator. I did some research and came across your video and I had the sled running the next day.

    THANK YOU! 1995 Cougar with no spark. It was the TSS. Your video is step by step perfect and excellently narrated. 👍

    • @BlaineDP
      @BlaineDP  4 года назад

      Glad I could help. The TSS is a good thing because it can/does prevent start ups with a carb still partially open so the sled runs away from you when it starts.

    Very good question. Check when cold or at room temp. All stators will read higher when they are warm or after you run the sled a bit so that will give you an inaccurate reading. Some stators read ok when cold, but when you warm them up to room temp only then do they read their real ohms and possibly show you that they are bad. I have a stator here that I am going to make a video out of to show this happening...reads good when cold but bad at room temp.

    Yes. the 1998 580 EFi stator is in a class by itself. I can't remember if they used that stator 1 or 2 years, but it is a stator that does not go in any other 500, 580 or 600 motor. It is a full 3 phase stator and does not have the separate ignition, injector and fuel pump coils.

  • @BlaineDP
    @BlaineDP  14 лет назад

    There are different ohm readings for different model sleds. Your specific model reading 175 and 17 is ohming out ok. Those readings are good for your stator (Of course there is always the small chance it ohms out ok, but may not be ok). More than likely you have another issue. If you bypassed all of your switches by using the jumper wire and still have no sprak, then you are probably looking at a cdi, coil or trigger coil issue. Double check all of your ground wires too.

    My 89 Jag has issues. I've cleaned the carb, checked plugs etc. It will start after about 15 pulls; but, won't stay running. The people I bought it off of said that they had issues with the stator. They had it replaced. It worked for awhile, then it puked again. My questions is: would it even fire at all if there were stator issues? I ordered a new fuel pump as well. Should be here in a few days

  • @BlaineDP
    @BlaineDP  14 лет назад

    Stator Specs sound correct. There are no cdi specs. You could have a mechanical issue. Look down inside the cylinder, check the exhaust side and also the intake side. Could have a broekn piston skirt, bad reeds, crank out of phase, sheered timing key, mouse nest in th exhaust....it could be a lot of things.

  • @BlaineDP
    @BlaineDP  14 лет назад

    Something is waring up and putting out less power: 1. Stator is dying after it warms up. Check stator ohms when cold and then after you start it and it dies. If the #'s are way off, it is a shorting out stator. 2. A trigger/pickup coil can do the same thing. It can be ok when cold and then go bad after it warms up a bit. Same thing: Check ohms when cold and then after it warms up. 3. The plug wires are not making good connection with the plug caps or maybe the secondary coils. Trim both ends.

    Hey man thank you for your videos I was able to successfully change my stator amd get rolling again. The harness got crushed and shorted out I thought I fixed it all but I still have no accessories. Really I'm just trying to get a headlight going as I just ditch bang with the sled I'm not on trails. Is it possible to just wire the headlight or a light bar directly to the 2 yellow wires on the top of the stator 4 prong plug. ?

  • @BlaineDP
    @BlaineDP  12 лет назад

    Check everything...compression, fuel and spark. Check stator ohms because most of the time when a sled warms up and starts running bad it is spark/stator related.

    Great video.
    I have a '99 Panther 440. Starts fine, idles good, throttles up good UNTIL it will randomly lose power and die. Only happens when there is a load on the track, not when track is lifted in the garage. Restarts first pull and repeats. Ideas?

  • @BlaineDP
    @BlaineDP  15 лет назад

    Sounds like the TSS switch but could be stator. go view my "diagnosing ignition" video and see how to bypass all of your switches...I pretty much walk through a quick diagnostic check. What are your stator ohms?

  • @BlaineDP
    @BlaineDP  15 лет назад

    Look for the connector that goes between your stator and your CDI. It won't have yellow wires. Yellow wires are "power" wires that power your gauges, head light ect..

  • @BlaineDP
    @BlaineDP  15 лет назад

    Yes, jump away! The TSS switch & kill switch are the 2 big eletrical issues that go bad on the 1990's cats. Your stator specs are 45 ohms and 450 ohms. Check your stator too just in case. If you don't know how, check my "how to check a stator" video. There are 2 of them. 1 shows how to check it in a sled and the other one shows how to check it when it is out of a sled. Like this video said...check all connections, grounds, check wires..ect...

  • @69kcooper
    @69kcooper 11 лет назад

    Well I got it going, all I had to do was take the ground wire off the pull cord area where stator goes. But now I have no speedometer? But it runs great now, but there does seem to be a loose wire somewhere. I'll just take it to the shop over the summer, I don't want to mess around with any wiring again, lol.

    It looks like these are the models that use that type stator. As you can see, it was only used by a few sleds over a 2 year span.

    Hey BlainePD. I came across your video, and was wondering if this would work on wheelers too? I got a '97 Arctic Cat Bearcat 454 4x4, and it has no spark. Runs great for first 10 min but then I am getting what seems to be loss of spark and intermittent spark causing loss of power and top speed of 60mph. Plugs are all new. Stator was replaced less than 1000 miles ago. Any thoughts on what would cause my heat related condition? Thx

    Hey Blaine ! I just bought a 1997 Grand Touring 583... I bought this sled for $200 here in Canada... Anyways here is the issue... I put new spark plugs in it and started it but had to hold the gas for it to get going... Then it did ! I ran it for about 5 or 10 minutes then noticed that the lights on the dash board started flickering. Gave it a big ass rev and BOOM the engine and everything died and I couldn't start her up anymore... The person that sold it to me also had this issue. Could this be a Bad Ignition coil ? Thankx dude !

  • @joshlefebvre3076

    Blain.. have you ever had issues with a single spark plug always burning out.. I can put brand new plug in the #1 hole on my 94 wildcat 700 and it will run great for a while. . Then it will start running on #2 hole only and then fire once every 3rd or 4th stroke on the #1 hole.. is it possible the resistor is gone in the plug wire cap?

    • @BlaineDP

      OEM coils and wires rarely go bad. It is more likely it is a stator or CDI box issue.

  • @mikereierson2537

    Blaine I jumpered the yellow wires on my harness and my machine fired right up. I am 99% sure the problem is in the ignition switch (which is electric start but I just manual start the machine). Without replaceing the switch can I somehow get my lights and emergency stop to work?
    thanks, your video was very helpful.

      Yes, you can turn the stator plug 180 degrees and just plug the 2 yellow wires into your wiring harness and wire your key straight to your stator. I have a video showing how...just look up arctic cat bypassing the wiring harness.

      The 97 580EFI had the only 3 phase stator that Cat ever used. It was primarily just to charge the battery. I believe your stator plug has 3 yellow wires and a ground and that's it.

    Hey Blaine talked briefly before just wanted your thoughts bought a jag z buddy put a 530 eltig engine from 89 he's running dual fuel pumps . It pulls hard but costly for trail riding . Talked to a local small engine mech locally and told him I wanted to condense the dual pumps down to one . He said no don't touch it as he p roll did the larger jets and or ported and polish really no way to know what work the other guy did tell it goes down and I have to pull it apart. My problem with this engine is It's almost 30 years old and the parts are becoming obsolete .ie fuel pump nonrebuild able costly stator flywheel etc . The first trip out it broke down 10 kms out in the bush .found out the bottom threads for the lower stator bolt are suspect and bolt found its way out into the stator assembly totally spaghettied everything the flywheel was reusable and located a spare unit for 100 out of peterbough. When i reassembled it put loctite and a lockwasher didnt want to get into retapping and alot of the thread holes are worn down fron guys wheeling bolts in and out for the last almost 30 years .I might like to go to a fan engine if i get into a corner on this 530 suggestions /transplant motor suggestions welcome the tub is a 440z 93 thanks for any info Mike

    • @BlaineDP
      @BlaineDP  7 лет назад +1

      Single fuel pump should be fine on most any motor until you get into triple mod motors that inhale the fuel but even then a high volume pump can be good enough. As far as what motor to put in it..I'm guessing the Jag Z is a fan motor so there are no heat exchangers so you can only put a fan motor in it.

    I have a 97 Jag 440 fan that I recently bought... the sled has spark and runs but I have absolutely no lights whatsoever.. I swapped out the stator and same thing.. I tested both stator for contunuity and ohms and both tested good.. another thing I found out is when the headlights are on high beam the key and kill switch will shut the engine off but will not whe i put the lights on low Beam.. I am completely lost with what is going on and have lost my patience trying to figure it out.

    • @BlaineDP
      @BlaineDP  2 года назад

      It's not a stator issue. Someone messed with the wiring or maybe there's a short or ground somewhere. Many times the issue can be found around the firewall or under the seat where wires may wear thru.

    Hi. I own a 2017 Actic Cat Bearcat XT GS. From day one, it's had starting problems. It's an electric start only sled. I turn the key and it starts off by doing nothing, then the solenoid will start clicking, then, after much back and forth with the key, it's finally starts. Warm weather or cold, same problem. It'll start a little quicker in warmer weather. Once it's running and warmed up, it works fine. It's under warranty and the key ignition was replaced. That wasn't it. Just curious to see what you think it might be. Relay, solenoid,..... what? Thanks.

    • @BlaineDP
      @BlaineDP  7 лет назад

      If it's still under warranty keep taking it back and let them keep swapping out parts. If it does it when cold or warm they should be able to sit there and just swap out parts until it starts correctly.

    I've got a 93 EXT 550. Lost power and then it quit. The spark must have been weak and then quit altogether. I jumped the connection from the stator per your video. No spark. If the ground is ok, should I go straight to buying a new stator?

  • @BlaineDP
    @BlaineDP  15 лет назад

    You need spark, fuel/air and compression. If you have spark, dump just a little gas int he cylinders and see if it starts for a few seconds. If it does, then you know it is a fuel delivery issue. It could be anything from your fuel pick up in your tank to a plugged filter, cracked fuel line, dying fuel pump, cracked pulser line (from cases to pump)..ect...check it all.

    I have an odd one for you, super weak spark on a 99 t cat just put a brand new stator In it. If I unplug the 4 plug connector I lose all spark .. what the heck.

    • @BlaineDP
      @BlaineDP  4 года назад

      the triples have much smaller/weaker spark that then twins do because they fire every 120 degrees and not every 180 degrees. If you unplugged the rubber 4 prong plug and all of a sudden had no spark, verify that you actually have a 98 or newer open loop cdi box on it.

    I have a 98 ZL 500 that I just recently replaced the stator in and now I cant get the sled to shut off with the key or the kill switch. Tested the kill swithc and key and they interupt correctly. Have to pull the plug wires to shut the dam thing off.

    • @BlaineDP
      @BlaineDP  11 лет назад

      On the 98 ZL500 carb you can umplug the wiring harness plug and it'll start and run. You can put the jumpre wire in it to see if it will shut off. If it won't it is either a CDI or stator issue. Also, check all ground wires.

    Hi Blaine I just purchased a 1998 zrt 600 and the few hours or riding everything went well. Now I cannot shut it off by the ignition key or Kill switch. I have to choke it to shut it off. I thought I had found the problem with a brown wire that was broken at terminal that it is connected to the pull cord case cover. But that did not fix my problem. It starts well too. Any ideas what the problem can be? Thank you

      I have seen a few things cause a "Sled Won't Shut Off" condition:
      1. It is usually a bad ground or a broken ground wire
      2. Moisture in the stator to wiring harness connector
      3. Moisture in a kill switch or tether
      4. CDI loses its internal ground path. I've seen more than a few 1998-1999 ZRT800-1000 CDI boxes lose their internal ground path and won't shut off
      5. Bad key switch
      6. A bad stator can cause a sled not to shut off. I have rewound several that fixed a "Won't shut off" issue.this list can be found at:www.outdoor-electric.com/sled-wonrsquot-shut-off.html

    I have a 1999 Pantera 800 Triple. Was using it ice fishing this weekend. Just puttering around, and it started to rev up and down on its own. I shut it down. Restarted it, and it did it again. I shut it down again and it wouldn't restart, now it has NO spark. It has a 2 year old Stator, and the head light will glow when I pull it over fast enough. So I'ave taken apart the handle bars to get to the wires. It looks like the wire that comes out of my throttle is a 2 wire, not a 3. I'm trying to do a jumper to diagnose whats wrong.

    • @BlaineDP
      @BlaineDP  7 лет назад +1

      You have an open circuit. You can just unplug the rubber 4-prong stator to wiring harness plug to bypass all electrical in the sled. Revving up and down could be a reed issue, carb issue, fuel delivery issue ect.. too.

    • @BlaineDP

      Power pack meaning the coils? OEM coils rarely go bad so you can try a used OEM coil for $20. There are ohm readings for the coils. The stator may have gone bad so you can ohm that out too. If it is bad you can find/buy a used one if it ohms out good for $100 or less.

When I went to reconnect the wires the machine started but it Boggs down and don't move. The male plug broke off so I cut it off and connected the wore to the same colours and it burned out all my lights and I barely made it home. Now it starts but don't go nowhere. What did your stator test at? These should eb your specs:
    Green/Brown 450 ohms
    Green/Black 45 ohms
    Black/Brown 495 ohms
    It sounds like a switch issue. Pul it over with the plugs out of it and check it for spark. I have a comlete "spark diagnosis" step by step write up that i will try to send you in an e-mail. If it is not a spark issue then it is proabbly a fuel delivery issue.

    I have a 98 cougar 550, didn’t have spark. When I unplugged the 4 prong connector at the stator, it fired right up. So I must have an open system, and there’s something wrong with the wiring in one of my switches right? And because it’s an open system I can’t do the bypass on the tss right?

    • @BlaineDP
      @BlaineDP  5 лет назад

      Correct, you have an open system. You can still do the TSS bypass for testing. If it is bad I recommend fixing it or at the very least wiring in a safety tether.

    • @BlaineDP
      @BlaineDP  5 лет назад

      It is an open system so something is wrong with one of your switches, the wiring harness, kill switch, tether or TSS.

      Bad or broken ground. Moisture in connector. Moisture in kill switch or tether. CDI loses its internal ground path. I've seen it with 98-99 zrt800/1000 cdi boxes. Bad key switch. Bad stator. I've rewound several and it fixed their "won't shut off" issue.
