    I appreciate all of this info in one video and with time stamps. The only part I have a different opinion on is with checking resistance. Checking for power and ground or the resistance of a wire is not a good test. It is only helpful if you understand the limitations and there is not high resistance. If you have an open circuit, then sure resistance is helpful. If there is high resistance in the circuit you would not see that unless you load tested those circuits. A single strand of wire will show good resistance and show you you voltage until they are loaded. I have found so many technicians do not understand this and continue to rely on resistance alone. I use resistance checks from time to time and I understand that if it tests good then that doesn't mean the circuit is good. It can be much quicker some times to just check resistance and if I find an open circuit then great. Just my thoughts. Otherwise this was a great video.

      Hi there and thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts. I agree as I’ve seen many cases that the regular resistance check is not helpful if there is not open circuit. But what I’m trying to do here is at the first place, I present the recommended details from the workshop manual as this is good for the basic troubleshooting. But of course there are some other methods that I prefer to present in another videos, just to avoid any confusion. Normally I use picoscope many times but I just mentioned it here and will explain it separately. I appreciate your kind words and sharing your knowledge as this is how everyone must be.🙏🙏

      I use resistance checks mostly to confirm that I'm on the right circuit, theirs no open or short to ground/power, or the circuits are no shorted together. Then I load the circuit once I have proven I'm on the right circuit

      An externally-switched ignition coil is just a transformer. Two wires, a ferrite core, all completely encapsulated in epoxy resin. The only thing that can really go wrong is that the coil - a bunch of wire - is broken or melted. Particularly the secondary coil. The resistance test covers the normal failure modes of a transformer.

  • @abdul-kabiralegbe5660
    @abdul-kabiralegbe5660 2 года назад +6

    @19:23. The multimeter's positive probe was on the IGF terminal not the IGT terminal (i.e. trigger). The IGT can only properly be tested with engine cranking or ON. The IGF can be checked when ignition is ON (which is what you showed), engine cranking or engine ON. IGF (when ignition is ON) will show about 5V (it only switches to near 0V at the moment the coil sparks during engine cranking or engine ON).

    If you have a plug-on-coil/direct type ignition coil and are having trouble getting any resistance measurement of the secondary coil by touching the test leads to the sparkplug contact and any of the pins, and you know you tried everything, it means the coil is burnt/blown/broken. You can verify by testing a brand-new coil at an auto parts store or whatever. That's what I did. The coil can still work even if it is blown and melted inside, but obviously, it won't work forever because eventually the spark won't be able to jump the broken inside parts of the coil.

    Hello, @12:38 the resistance is below 6, is the ignition coil good or bad? What is the minimal allowance of how low or high resistance can be past 6-8 kohms.
    Also when testing the Ignition coil ground circuit for resistance at the connector does the car need to be in On position or off?

    • @AutomotiveDiagnosis
      @AutomotiveDiagnosis  Год назад +1

      Hi there, thanks for your comment.
      That difference in resistance is still acceptable, normally if there is anything wrong, resistance value will be much higher or lower, this difference was only less than 1 ohm which is nothing importance. Many workshop manuals accept 15% higher or lower than recommended resistance.
      For the second question, ignition switch must be off.

    Hi, how can check only coil 4 pin with multimetar, didn't see on video? Thanks

    • @AutomotiveDiagnosis
      @AutomotiveDiagnosis  Год назад +1

      Hi there, checking the 4-pin ignition coil is not as easy as 2-pin coil because it has the ignition module inside which makes the multimeter inspection very hard and normally you won’t find any specifications for 4-pin ignition coil in workshop manual. So as so did in the video, so would check the wiring, and for the coil itself, I would swap it with the ignition coil from another cylinder, so if codes moves to the new cylinder it shows that coil is faulty.

      I had the same problem measuring. It seems insane to me that the secondary coil wouldn't be directly connected to ground by design. Also seems insane that any diode would be put on a high-voltage secondary. More likely the coil has failed, right? I will test with new ignition coils.

    • @wdtony
      @wdtony 2 месяца назад

      @@TopGunMan
      FYI
      The coils I was working on were good and functioning properly.
      The secondary on these new coils is not wired like the old coils.
      The ways you can test are with an oscilloscope or keep primary connected and zip tie the plug in place out of the vehicle. Just remember to tie a ground strap to the plug so you don’t fry the coils.
      Then compare the spark with that of a good plug.

    • @AutomotiveDiagnosis

      Hi there, thanks for your comment. That way we can confirm the presence of the signal (trigger), but normally we can get more from the waveform. When you have a faulty ignition coil, most likely you are able to start the engine but of course engine will run roughly. Each three wires can be checked individually for short or open circuit even if engine is off. For the ignition coil itself, the best way if to swap it with an ignition coil of another cylinder, then start the engine and check the fault codes, if misfire or ignition coil fault code moves to the this cylinder, it confirms that ignition coil is faulty.

      Scan tool gives you some information but it is not going to point to the main cause, most of the time, some test and measurement are needed.

    I simply want to test my ignition coil. Don't want to sit through 22 minutes of video that talks about all the other stuff that I don't care about. When this video gets to my type of ignition, I don't know if that video portion is dependent on some other other portions of the part of the 22-minute video, and the explanation is a lot of technical gibberish. Be concise, be precise, avoid tech jargons, stick to simple 1, 2, 3 steps to do something.

      Hi there, obviously there are so many systems and technologies in the car and not all of them are easy to understand for everyone and we can not just talk about the basic stuff while it won't be helpful many times. Anyway, could you please tell me what is your car, what type of ignition coil you have and what is the current fault?

      It’s been more than two years that we have not used that voice again. If you check other videos on the channel, they are all our voices.

      Thanks for leaving the comment without checking the channel page. This video was made more than a year ago, it’s been a long time that we put our voice on the videos when we record them on the car. And all videos since 8 or 9 months ago are recorded with our voice.
