This version should be remastered with more emphasis on the bass and drums. Pat's voice is out of this world.

This song at the end, when the two guys who have been enemies the whole movie, shake hands, right as Pat belts out, "Love can't hide....", gets me every time.

BX, you nailed it. The handshake accompanied by the drum leading into Pat's voice is perfect. I love how Moroder slowed the handshake down, and how you don't really see the hands connecting as they fade out, because you don't need to. It symbolizes that a new world, which we won't see in this incredible film, is going to overtake the one we just saw. I saw this in Brookline MA in 1984, and the entire audience stood and applauded at that moment.

Giorgio Morder is a real genius. The final Ladder scene and the shake hands is brilliant. He composed his song maybe with the wonderful voice of Pat Benatar in mind. The guitar and drums played by Keith Forsey are fantastic.

They weren't enemies the whole movie long.
      Did you watch the movie?
Foreman Grot worked for Master Joh Fredersen and enters the film promptly being Fredersen's stool pidgeon presenting confiscated blueprints of the worker's secret avenues to the Prophetess Maria's church meetings through the deep underground ancient catacombs.

I never knew what a beautiful voice Pat Benetar has until I saw this movie in 1985. She had made a career out of trying to sound tough and angry, but she was capable of so much more.

    • @diagonotter

How reductive of her incredible place in the rock scene. She brought this same strength, nuanced interpretation and soaring vocal range to songs that speak to the wronged and abused as to this beautiful love song.

Pat Benatar is one of the best vocalists of our time. To say her other music is "angry" shows a tragic disrespect for her. She's a vocalist, vocalists emote. She isn't angry, she's gifted.

Her eyes are simply stunning. It's incredible how a woman who lived 100 years ago can still capture men's hearts. Brigitte Helm's beauty is timeless.

I just bought and re-watched the Moroder Metropolis with my husband, who had never seen it. You can't find it on streaming so we had to buy a DVD. It's just as great as I remembered, and this song is the standout. Once again, I cried at the end of the movie. How many 1926 silent films can make you cry? The score, although totally 80s music, made it all work beautifully. And I was happy that my husband liked it as much as I.

    • @yohannbiimu
      @yohannbiimu 4 года назад +2

There is a 1927 film called "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans" that will have you crying your eyes out. Interestingly, it was directed by another German named F. W. Murnau, and it was produced at the William Fox studios, years before it became 20th Century Fox. Technically it isn't a "silent film" because it has a soundtrack for music and sound effects, and that alone made it rather ground-breaking. It also won an Academy Award in 1929 (the first "Oscar" ceremony ever) for "Best Unique and Artistic Picture" (the only time that category was awarded), and also for Cinematography and Best Actress (Janet Gaynor). Look it up. You won't be disappointed.

I've never subsequently rediscovered the same link since. I still watch this recording, from time-to-time. As a collector, and a huge fan of this film I would like to purchase a real DVD of this film. The 1984 edit of 'Metropolis' is a personal favorite of mine.

Like so many of the other commenters here, I was also entranced by the 1984 Moroder version and the music, too. I was also crushed that the version that we have here was not on the soundtrack (soundtrack version is kinda poppy and weird, imo.) So, I would rent the film on VHS and rewind over and over just to hear this gorgeous song. Got to meet Pat Benatar at a pre-concert charity thing a few years ago and was so overwhelmed by being in her presence that I failed to ask her involvement with this beautiful song. Such regrets!! 😪

      Still joyfully searching Jose!
I’m on a journey to find someone who shares the funk…that transcendental quality that fuels us to live an extraordinarily creative life…even in ordinary or difficult circumstances.
I have little fear of social stigma and I make my own path regardless of the approval or disproval of others. I’m not afraid to bite off more than I can chew…and I frequently do.
I live with integrity and I have a backbone. I utilize them both. Daily.
I’m an artist, educator, master tinkerer, ferocious explorer, and seeker of the funk in this soul-swept world. If you know anyone like that or anyone who’s open to it, please send them my way. Ms. Benatar has already written our vows😉

Must have been incredible to experience that level of love. I’ve come close once…but not that Freder and Maria level of love. My dating pool is smaller, as I am living with a same gender attraction…but that has not deterred me. Freder is out there somewhere. Again, little fear of social stigma or what people think…so my journey continues.
No I do not know Pat Benatar personally…the vow comment was a joke. I made a prior comment about using the lyrics from “Here’s My Heart” as my wedding vows.

For a straight up rocker, Benatar has power, sustainability of musical notes and expression that can't be beat.

Before I saw this film many years ago I hadn't really heard of her, though I was familiar with Love is a Battlefield. It made me check out her back catalogue and I'm glad I did.

Did you know that the second ever video played on MTV was her? It was in 1981. "You Better Run"(cover of the 1966 song by the Young Rascals) from her first album. That is when I first heard of her, and I was stuck like glue immediately, and still am. Bought everything that came out. About a year after this movie was released, my film class had us watch it, as we were studying Fritz Lang. I tis by far the best edition of the movie, and I do enjoy other songs in it, and I'm a John Anderson fan. I was totally captivated by Here's My Heart, and really impressed at how they spread it out over 3 very disparate parts. As people here have mentioned, she had classical training before turning to rock. She had been plucked out of a singing class in school because the teacher knew an amazing voice when she heard one. They got the professionals involved, and she went to classical singing school. You can hear that in all her pop songs. People say she's raspy, but that's an illusion played by the music, and by her sheer power. Pay attention and you hear no rasp at all, only smooth beauty. People think she was a wild child, and that is also very false. She never partied. She never did drugs. She fell in love at first sight of Neil when he auditioned for the band. Eventually, they married. On tour, she brought a washer and dryer so she could wash their kids' clothes, as they usually went along with them, and her evenings were spent doing average motherly things like reading them bedtime stories. I finally got to see the Benatar/Geraldo act a little under a decade ago. She is a most gracious host.

When the movie made it to my town, I took my girl to see it and then proceeded to forget about her for the next two hours.
A couple days later, I came back to the theater with a tape deck and made a bootleg of the soundtrack. I spent the next
week or so mixing it down to a very, very similar version as you made here. Fantastic job!

I saw the 1984 Metropolis on Betamax in college in the 90s, I think, and this song (and the movie) made an impression on me ever since. Pre-internet, I tried in vain to find the video again, just to listen to the song. Technology has its evils, but sometimes it has its advantages. Thanks for your work on getting this song on YT. :)

It's almost 6 years ago and I'm just seeing this now! Thank you so much for this. It is so much better quality than mine. I was in the same situation as you. I saw the movie when it came out in 84 and was very taken by most of the score(despite the film being nominated for a Raspberry for worst score) with Here's My Heart being at the very top. It is a really beautiful song. I love how it gradually crescendos into a brisk but lumbering paced pop piece with tambourines and loud snare, as Pat's vocals become more powerful. I pretty much obsessed over it for years. I, like you, hoped to find audio of the song strung together. I wrote Sony music but my letter was returned. I, like you, found and bought the soundtrack CD only to find that version unlistenable. Also like you, I used my movie, albeit VHS, and a mixer, to make my own gapless version. I made 3 cassette copies and made the final song onto a 4th tape. I had figured it was a nice one to use in my wedding should that ever come, and it did in 1996, and I did use it. Most people don't know that Pat Benatar, of whom I had always been a raging fan, is classically trained. I read her autobiography. This is one of few songs she sings that really showcases that.

Really is a shame, and should be considered a crime that this isn't the version that made it on the soundtrack, or any of Pat Benatars albums.
This is quite possibly, or at least to me, the best song Benatar ever preformed.

I own the Moroder version of what I consider to be the greatest sci fi film of all time. I also own every re-mastered and recompiled version of Metropolis ever issued. Every time they found lost footage and re-released the movie. I bought it. But, back to Pat Benatar. I also bought the LP of the Moroder soundtrack (first on LP and then on CD). I was tremendously disappointed to find that not only was the version of Here's My Heart on the LP not the film version. More than that, it also didn't include the ending scene and ending credits version. Which I personally consider the best version of the song.
From a devoted fan, thanks so much for doing this.
