Halsey said on her twitter that this is a song about the journey of falling in love and then sabotaging it with your own paranoia and insecurity. And even the title goes the same way as the song. Forever (happy) ..... (taking a break, the piano break, uncertainty) is a long time (paranoia). It's like saying I will love you forever, then thinking, will I? Forever is a long time, will they be able to do that? Will I be able to do that? ITS FUCKING GENIUS.

Jose Sandoval she does. Obviously there’s ppl that help her tweak it and make changes, but the overall inspiration for the songs are her own life experiences. In a recent interview she said that this song was originally one of her poems...we know that songs are still poetry too, but you can tell that this started as a spoken poem. Does that make sense? 😆 sometimes I’m not as good at articulating my point the same way I hear it in my mind lol

@@josesandoval2658 she wrote all of this song by herself, some even are when she's manic (thus, the album's name) and some of her songs are helped by other writers and producers, but most of the work is hers, but this album is all made by Ashley for Halsey, so yeah ^^

When she said "how could somebody ever love me?" my mind flew to Sorry's lyrics and it breaks me, every verse in this album where she expresses somehow that she cannot believe she's worth loving breaks me cause I love her to pieces, her mind, her attitude, her art and so many other things, it kinda hurts not being able to tell her.

This song is incredible, probably one of the best I heard. It is so well done. At first, Halsey is falling in love with somebody, that's why her voice and the melody are so sweet. But then, there's the piano part, everything is becoming uncertain, something is weird. After that, Halsey is becoming more & more anxious and pessimistic, that's why the melody is a lot more heavy, she's torn in her mind ... wow

This sounds cheesy, but God does. It's hard to understand, but just know He does. I didn't know how to truly love myself until I accepted that Jesus loves me right now, as messed up as I am, and will never stop loving me.

there's always that small group of people who bash on halsey saying she's generic and her music isn't memorable. but i appreciate that she's sharing her mind with us in such an artistic way. i don't know if she'll be memorable years from now, but I do know she's creating some special stuff in the moment. And i can appreciate that.

The outro holds so much meaning. something that is being delicately built by a soft piano music is literally torn apart in seconds when she screams "What am I thinking? What does this mean? How could somebody ever love me?", and the sounds of something ripping and screeching makes it even more realistic. I love this part so goddamn much!
I didn't see anyone else comment this, but doesn't anyone feel like the break starting in 1:08 is when it starts transitioning from mania to depression? As someone who has bpd, this song (and album in general) really hits all the spots, the switch in genre, the questioning of self worth, the paranoia, the idealization of a person ("love built, God built") and then the sabotaging of relationship

there’s prob some deeper meaning into it, but the way I see it is that it’s part 2 of this song
Each of her albums has a trio of songs in the middle of the album meant to be listened to in succession that serve as a transition/interlude. For Manic it’s “Forever…(is a long time),” “Dominic’s Interlude,” and “I HATE EVERYBODY.” For HFK it’s “Good Mourning,” “Lie,” and “Walls Could Talk.” It’s currently unknown what the one for Badlands is; the fans are still figuring that one out.
