@@malekhai 3:06 Me too and I’m 77, I remember Every Best of My heart, but we didn’t get their early releases in the UK, it was Giving Up that got me hooked forever. Saw Gladys in June 24 on her farewell tour, still had the pipes at 80!
I was 11 when this beautiful song came out, and I am trying to figure out why I loved it so much even at that age. I mean, I was walking around singing this with FEELING.
Gladys Knight Has the BEST FEMALE VOICE EVER. White, Black whatever. What a great voice!!!! The old videos showing her perform show just how magnificent her voice and presence are. Queen of soul, Queen of music from 1960's to 2020's. No one can Compare to this voice!!!!!
Gladys Knight - the BEST female singer of Motown area - and the Pips i love them - together they were ONE with Gladys. The Pips were amazing in their own right - fine dancers, beautiful harmonies
Too many great soul songs in 1969...this is my favorite by her & the pips, vinyl version is better....her voice goes stratasphere...should've been top 10
Incredible song by Ashford and Simpson- they always wrote these deeply, insightful and adult songs and Gladys Knight and the Pips brought out every last drop of power in the lyrics (check out the part @ 1:25 where she sings "...cut you down to size" and then to add salt to the wound, she takes that little pause and comes in with the death blow to this man's ego with the next line- brilliance) Why this didn't go higher on the charts is beyond me- but it's still a hit in my book!
tomovox- motown, jingles & more in COLOR I always loved this record by Gladys Knight and The Pips and have seen them sing this at The Apollo Theatre a few times. It was written with such power and intensity and when done like we see here it’s explosive. I agree with you in all you said it should have been a bigger hit. I did notice at one time the audience at The Apollo were reticent after it was over. I never knew why because I was screaming my head anywhere. I think it may have been that it was saying something to folks that they could say to someone that hurt them so bad.
one thing I find very unique about her is that even at this young age, she had a voice beyond her years! such a mature soulful voice at a young age..that's rare!
And at a old age has a very young sounding voice, the same great voice she has always had. Easy top 5 female voices, probably top 8 all time, everybody.
When I was little kid in the 60's, I used to stare at her album in my parent's collection, I had such a crush on her. Fast forward 50 years, and now I know why. My God she is stunning!
Wow, Sang it, Gladys! This song is like a slap in the face for someone who has a big ego. Thats the way to make 'em feel like sh-- after they break your heart.
This is one of my favorite songs from them. Gladys Knight is a treasure, and the Pips can't be praised enough. You can't offer that kind of support without being stellar singers.
It is perfect as it is in my opinion. This song and performance is better than anything you might hope to hear today. There are no new great singers and musicians today. They suck horribly now.
No I don't think so. They'd probably autotune it to death, add a bunch of cuss words and butcher the whole thing. Gladys sang this song with SOUL...these young girls couldnt hold a match to this groove. Leave well enough alone.
Quite a talent wasn`t she?But she did get a great deal of recognition.....But I guess you`re probably right. At her best-like in this song-she was every bit as good as Aretha Franklin or Diana Ross.
The song is near perfect for ANY time.Or any era.The most talented singer and the most expressive voice in history. If Christ on the Cross wanted a singer to sing the story of humanity in his last minute on earth, he would choose Gladys Knight.
great song from 1969 and one of my favorites by this fantastic woman. One of the best voices ever and man did she know how to put on a show, always wearing a gown!! Miss those days.
I love this song. Nick and Valerie Simpson will go down in history for their song writing skills. I saw them twice. Great performers as well. Glydas and the Pips sang the heck out of this song.
Classic Gladys & The Pips! (RIH 2 Pips!) My Jam here! Played this one endlessly! Those Pips are stepping! Another one of my favs by them! Yeah you know how love can build you up one moment, and the next, cut you down in size. . . Much Love!
such a great motown song, underrated song too, so sad too, i have done my fair share of hurting and crying, written by my favourite motown songwritters ashford and simpson, to me they wrote the best motown songs, who dosen't love gladys knight. one hell of a voice i love this lady a legend.
I was brought to this youtube courtesy of the wonderful Joe Cocker's version of the song which is incredible. What really really amazes me, just as much as this young lady's voice is the sheer quality of the lyrics. I think this has to be one of my favourite song lyrics ever. The song is superbly constructed. It has a wonderful deviance from normality, slight complexity in the verse "now you come to me" just matches the emotion with the words. Whether JC or GK singing, I feel the pain and the intense love the song is intended to portray. Words and music make the feelings come from deep down. I love the way love (lost forever) is the theme over anger. It was a complicated song to construct, and that twist, I can't replace her just like nobody could ever replace you. No going back knowing his love lay elsewhere, and she is loving and genuine enough to feel his pain. It's all very clever. And superbly enacted here.
i know. why isn't there anyone else like her. If I had met someone that looked and sounded like that, as a musician, i'd be set for life. hahaha but seriously, she's amazingly beautiful.
Waynebrasler said below that Gladys poured her heart and soul into every song on her albums...for those of you who never saw here in person, it was incredible! I saw her at least 15 times since the first time at the Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles in 1965. Every song in every show I saw was flawless -- every note in every song in every live show...nobody can touch her!! She's the best ever, that voice tearing it up every time...and sweet and beautiful, too. Too bad her choice in men was pitiful
The absolute truth! You used to be so proud Now your head's a little lower And you walk a little slower And you...don't talk so loud DID'T ANYBODY TELL YOU LOVE HAD ANOTHER SIDE???
One of my favorites that I actually experienced between two women, and like Glady's said, it made me a wise man afterwards. Glady's looked right through my soul on this one and that's when I decided to stop playing games with black woman and became more transparent and cut out the jiving. But in all honesty my game playing didn't come to a halt immediately, it still took sometime, but whenever I heard this song it would remind me to get my shit together. I remember how when I first heard it how it made me give myself an examination of my head and thought process. I would notice how Glady's and The Pips truly gotten through to me. These Black woman are more perceptive than you can imagine. Soul music at it's finest. And Glady's looks stunning and the Pips back her up nicely. Yep, music can change you, this is some serious therapy.
Thanks for your sharing your experience my friend. But I do disagree on one point. The racial issue.I`m white.Believe me when I tell you that Gladys`s voice and lyrics touch me very deeply. She has the most expressive voice I`ve ever heard-especially in describing sorrow. If Christ on The Cross needed a singer to sing about the suffering of the world, he would choose Gladys Knight.
hazelman, no shit! NOBODY could ever follow Gladys on stage in a show, and I mean nobody. She always tore it up, had the audience begging for more, nobody like her in thie whole world! The best female artist ever.
This is one of my favorite songs by them. I grew up on this, and my sister played it enough to cause it to have a special place in my heart and mind. I also have a version of Nona Henrdyx and Billy Vera doing this same song.
Stevieboy, I'm always telling my friends that Gladys was the best female singer at Motown, with Brenda Holloway a close second. If you listen to Brenda's "When I'm Gone" on an old school, million watt rack system (I still got mine, nothing sounds better), really listen to every note, you will hear vocal perfection...soft, sweet, crystal clear, strong, a little catch in her voice here and there, absolutely beautiful and my favorite Motown cut ever. She was 18 when she made it.Berry drove her away
She was just a teen. The guys weren't much older. Epic sound, true talent. Songs written by Ashford and Simpson can't be mistaken. Great moment in time for music.
First glance at watching this fantastic performance is I am amazed at how soulful sophisticated Gladys sounds here yet she appears so young.. she's such a wonderful singer
OMG!!!She was a beautiful young black lady, and her hair has always been so shiny and thick even when she'd cut it shoulder lenght she still had that bounce. You go girl, no wonder Diana hated on her.
I love Gladys Knight and Diana Ross. But you have that backwards. Diana Ross has never hated on Gladys Knight. She has always talked highly of Gladys and said how good she was. It was Gladys who has always hated on Diana Ross. And that's a fact!! Gladys has always taken jabs at Diana Ross because she really never did have the great international success that Diana Ross has had.
A great record. Gladys and the Pips did great work for Motown from the start, and we repaid with inferior album concepts and covers and having their songs repeatedly passed on to other Motown artists to cover. Their albums are really interesting because there's no filler. Every song Gladys recorded she poured her heart into and set on fire. Diana Ross admired Gladys' work. And please note: Diana has repeatedly said she loved Martha and the Vandellas.
‘B’ side of Friendship Train. As far as I was concerned they were both ‘A’ sides! Terrific track. Takes me way back to the 60’s. Gonna miss her!
Always my girl! The older stuff was pure gold❤️
And best background singers and dancers of all time.
One of America's Finest to ever do it.
I'm just a 63 year old white boy who's been in Love w/ Gladys since I was 15...
We are a few millions in the queue... In love since I was 17.
@@malekhai 3:06 Me too and I’m 77, I remember Every Best of My heart, but we didn’t get their early releases in the UK, it was Giving Up that got me hooked forever. Saw Gladys in June 24 on her farewell tour, still had the pipes at 80!
🌎 I'm about to be 45 next Friday and never appreciated songs like this but I'm still here in 2023 thankful
The Ultimate Collection: Gladys Knight & The Pips, a great compilation album
I was 11 when this beautiful song came out, and I am trying to figure out why I loved it so much even at that age. I mean, I was walking around singing this with FEELING.
Wise beyond your years!

The Empress of Soul
Ashford and Simpson are songwriting GODS.
i can't believe this song never made it to the top ten back in its day. this is so unbelievably good.
I’m 23 years old and I love this song so much makes me so emotional in a good way.
Mannnn I just love this song. And to see her singing it and the Pips stepping to it is so so awesome. 2023 and still loving it. ❤
I LOVE Gladys, she's one of the few that can make me tear up with her voice.
You go SOUL SINGER!!!!!!!
Beautiful song I play it over and over, and beautiful lady indeed BOY WE WAS BLESSED back in the day with beautiful music of MANY SOUNDS💯💯💯
The PIPS! Keep the camera on the PIPS too because I don't want to miss nothing!
Gladys Knight - the BEST female singer of Motown area - and the Pips i love them - together they were ONE with Gladys. The Pips were amazing in their own right - fine dancers, beautiful harmonies
I'm obsessed with this! Why wasn't this song more popular. This might be my favorite Gladys performance. Thank you so much for sharing.
Too many great soul songs in 1969...this is my favorite by her & the pips, vinyl version is better....her voice goes stratasphere...should've been top 10
I first heard in an episode of Ugly Betty back in 2005
wow. she's one beautiful lady. she had lovely hair and a captivating smile! Wonderful, soulful rendition.

Amazing song. Gladys is something else.
I heard the song, but I had NO idea . . . Lord have mercy!!!
Glady's voice is still just as strong till this day, maybe even more stronger.
LEGENDS 👑 (❤A MAN LIKE ME➕) 1#HOLY SPIRIT 🔥
Motown Royalty. Gladys Knight & The Pips with Ashford & Simpson. Nothing could be wrong

Yes Zakia, Little Willie John comes to mind, he will send chills down your spine. I still shake my head in dis-belief every time I hear him.
And at a old age has a very young sounding voice, the same great voice she has always had. Easy top 5 female voices, probably top 8 all time, everybody.

I can understand why you did. She is incredibly beautiful
Gladys knight looks sooo pretty back in the day and today she still does😍😍

Zikerion Reese Lord, this woman can sing!
Wow, Sang it, Gladys! This song is like a slap in the face for someone who has a big ego. Thats the way to make 'em feel like sh-- after they break your heart.
This made me cry. Blew my mind. 🙂
My life long dream ....was to be a ...PIP.😌
This is one of my favorite songs from them. Gladys Knight is a treasure, and the Pips can't be praised enough. You can't offer that kind of support without being stellar singers.

She sings with such feeling and emotion. Very talented but never got the ovation that she should have in music. Gladys, I think was underrated.
Quite a talent wasn`t she?But she did get a great deal of recognition.....But I guess you`re probably right. At her best-like in this song-she was every bit as good as Aretha Franklin or Diana Ross.
better! without question!
You`re right.
One of her Greats Luv her Music
Been hearing this song all my life.
Oh how I love this song. Perfect for a rainy Saturday afternoon. Thank you Gladys, Bubba, William and Edward!
The song is near perfect for ANY time.Or any era.The most talented singer and the most expressive voice in history. If Christ on the Cross wanted a singer to sing the story of humanity in his last minute on earth, he would choose Gladys Knight.
She’s the absolute best ! I love Gladys !
Beautiful and stunning xxx
Man that's a beautiful black woman !
bring this style of music back im tired of today's music.
Miss Ross covered this song on her third solo album. Both voices are so very different and distinct, I VERY MUCH enjoy both versions! GO GLADYS!
The 4th best Gladys song after Midnight Train, Make Me The Woman, and If I Were Your Woman. That 3rd verse!
I love this song sooo much!
No one can do this song like Gladys....this was one of my songs back in my young days use to listen to this after shcool

Gladys is the one the greatest singers to ever pick up a microphone. Thanks for posting Largo3point0.
Seven people gave this a thumbs down. This is Gladys at her soulful best. smh.
Hopefully those are about the quality of the recording and not this amazingly talented group.
such a great motown song, underrated song too, so sad too, i have done my fair share of hurting and crying, written by my favourite motown songwritters ashford and simpson, to me they wrote the best motown songs, who dosen't love gladys knight. one hell of a voice i love this lady a legend.
Stunning! Such an amazing song(A&S🙏🙏🙏).. and Gladys..that is Giving It! No show-offy vocal acrobatics, just total pure heart, and soul💖💔😪😭💗🤗

Rhanks for the post! My absolute favorite by Gladys Knight And The Pips!

I remember seeing her sing this in concert 1973 and 1975
Underrated band of the 1960's and 1970's. Great stuff.
Now you come to me ? ... tell 'em Ms G.
She was just a teen. The guys weren't much older. Epic sound, true talent. Songs written by Ashford and Simpson can't be mistaken. Great moment in time for music.
This was released in Feb 1969, so Gladys would have been 24, still young but not a teen.
Super clip, many thanks
First glance at watching this fantastic performance is I am amazed at how soulful sophisticated Gladys sounds here yet she appears so young.. she's such a wonderful singer
This is a great song I used to spin this record over and over
in that time i was so radical listening my rock bands, i didnt know and didnt have to try so hard to understend what music is!!!

they were such a class act!
REMEMBERING SONGWRITER/PRODUCER NICKOLAS "NICK" ASHFORD (MAY 4, 1941 - AUGUST 22, 2011) [08/22/2016]
never can and never will. Period.
Gladys: best.
This song was released in 1970 & she was still with Motown @ that time.
