  • In today's video we take a look at a 2008 Infiniti FX35 that will not power up when the push button ignition is pressed. We quickly discover that the vehicle has a faulty steering lock unit module, but the shop has already replaced the BCM or body control module by recommendation of a locksmith. Find out what happens when you take advice from a locksmith that isn't trained in diagnostics.

      Being able to diagnose vehicles now takes education ,patience high tech tools and common sense . And finding a guy who is not out to rack up repairs out of dishonesty is important .
      I maintained my family's vehicles .but occasionally my daughter brought my wife's car she used to a honest guy like this one . I didn't mind .he didn't rip her off .has reasonable fees . Then he died from cancer 😕

    As a locksmith, I agree completely. 99 % of locksmiths have no business diagnosing vehicle problems. Unfortunately, many vehicle owners will call me and beg me to come out even after I tell them I can program keys, not fix their car or truck. My programmers have amazing key programming software but no testing software. I especially get irritated when a "mechanic" diagnoses the car or truck over the phone and tells the vehicle owner to call a locksmith, the customer feels especially desperate then.

      I’m a Lockmith and I’m a bit offended lol just a bit. In this case the mechanic should not take the locksmith advice for a new bcm, since he is a locksmith and only programs keys and fixes locks.
      The mechanic needs to call you the electrician/diagnostician before paying for $$$$ for an electrical component that can’t be returned.
      Your videos are super valuable and Mechanics need to invest in these diagnostic tool before changing parts that are non refundable

    • @DFWAuto_Hack
      @DFWAuto_Hack Год назад +1

      @@ADVANCEDLEVELAUTOo buddy. This was no clickbait thing. The end of your video tells and insist of what your thumbnail is. You basically said the truth. It is no locksmith jobs to diagnose people cars. Matter of fact, locksmiths do not like to deal eith issues that should be diagnosed first.
      On one end of the spectrum, there are incompetent mechanics who make customers pay for parts they throw at the vehicle then at last tell the customers "you must have a key issue, call the locksmith" in just the same way as you mentioned locksmiths telling customers they might need a BCM.
      On the mid end of the spectrum, you had cheap customers who buy and drive cars they cannot afford and want to take shortcuts and call a locksmith and usually start their request with "my keys needs repeogrammed" because it is easier and cheaper to have a locksmith come to them than getting their car towed to the dealer. Most of the time they dont even have $11 monthly roadside assistance memberships for the fanxy cars they love to show up in.
      Bottom line is, if everyone was staying in their lines and doing what they were supposed to do, they would be less to know problems.
      Lastly so yes, Locksmiths are supposed to travel to the site, fix the lock or program the car, grab the money and go although more and more locksmith are getting interested into diagnosing which is not a requirement of their job but a valuable additional skill to limit. If it comes down to that, Locksnith should charge for diagnostic and charge again for the key programming.

    When ever you're asked to come behind another person's diagnose or part replacement, I learned early on to find out what was the original problem, then diagnose the problem. Don't accept the previous work that was done as being the correct procedure!
    Remember......you were called in because one or more "attempted" to repair the problem and may have used the "parts cannon" and caused more problems!
    Eric is correct in how he approached the problem! And notice, HE FIXED IT!

    As both a Locksmith AND a 25 year master auto technician, I believe there are more shops that are incompetent than Locksmiths. At least here, consumers are protected from issues from "Licensed" locksmiths through consumer affairs with bonds and mandatory liability insurance. The problem arises when customers are cheap and try to save money and use cheap entities. Seen plenty of steering lock issues. I'd bet the only difference in the parts is the Logo.

    Fact: the steering locks were originally like 900 before they started having an issue then they came out with an updated part that was around 300. Issue is that we couldn't use the old part number on the most repairs but still had them in stock. So most parts departments want to get rid of the old part because 1) they needed to clear their shelfs and 2) they get higher commission off the older more expensive part. The reason the new was cheaper was that it took away the mechanical steering lock function altogether and was more of a dummy lock to start the vehicle, hence why pulling the fuse really doesn't do much

It miraculously came back to life after rolling off the flatbed at the repair shop so I left running and didn't turn it off until I got home. The steering rack is also noisy and feels bad.

    I clicked this video thinking some mechanic was trying to bash us to make themselves look good but I agree with what you said. The issue we have is we can only go by what the person calling us out tells us. Now I know as a locksmith with 8 plus years of experience I would’ve instantly guessed it was the steering lock module due to the key being already programmed but the steering lock not releasing. But the BCMs are trash in Nissan/Infinitis so with little mechanic knowledge I could see how he was just guesstimate that as being the issue, but then again if it’s at a shop it’s their job to find the problem, then call us to do our part.

    That's exactly right. Many locksmith guys don't know how to diagnose antitheft problem. I've been in many shops where the locksmith guy supposedly programmed keys but nothing happened. Other shops have spend a lot of money and still couldn't fix it..They're not diagnosticians..Always understand the system. A lot of Nissans the problem is the unified meter where the customer drops coins and shorts out. In that case the bcm with not communicate. Just disconnect the unified meter connector and you'll get communication. Then the vehicle will starts. In this case you can tap on the steering lock module with rubber mallet and most of time it works.

  • @TwoToneProduc
    @TwoToneProduc Месяц назад

    I just solved it on my 2011 G37, saved me from spending LOTS of money - if this happens to you PAY ATTENTION:
    - NEVER lock the steering wheel when this happens - ALWAYS keep it centered and unlocked !
    - The 10A steering lock fuse is the one you need to pull ONLY WHILE THE ENGINE IS TURNED ON !!!
    - ALWAYS be careful when pulling out the fuse box since the main electric harness is attached to its bottom
    - If the battery is in the way - remove the battery and then put it back in and only then try starting the car
    - try starting the car while tapping the steering lock module under the steering wheel - tap it WHILE pushing the brake pedal+start button at the same time
    Good luck

    Well actually the key man is the one who told me what my exact problem was. It was the mechanics that were charging for parts and labor with no solution

    Great video. It’s worth noting that holding the key up to the start button on this car won’t do anything. This is a slot key. On Nissans and Infinitis with the slot in the dash you’ll want to insert the key into the slot. Same as you would if the fob battery was dead.

    I’m a former automotive technician and I’m now an apprentice locksmith. I work with a real automotive locksmith who is honest and has diagnostic capabilities. These “locksmiths” you’re talking about are fly by nights with an im608 and a dolphin key machine on the race to the bottom. Please think before you dig on locksmiths.

    Very useful info! BTW: The car looks like a S51 body - 2nd generation FX35, so I would have selected FX35/FX50 in the scan tool. When you selected FX35/FX45 - S50 in the scan tool, do you think there was any limit to the control modules that the scanner could access?

    Even some dealers can't fix a problem. I brought my daughters car to have a remote programmed on her 2010 vw beetle. 4 hrs later they said they couldn't do it. They tried to sell me on a 1200 dollar vacuum pump replacement for a small oil leak. 4 yrs later I did a vacuum pump delete kit for 189.
