I think this is one of the best “getting into” videos you guys have done so far. Would love a video that was “our favourite decks so far” where you each share a deck you’ve enjoyed and why that is 🙂
A fantasy flight card game that you can get into for $10, without having to buy any extras to experience the full game? Never would have guessed that one
I ordered the starter set. It's not bad value for money on the Internet since I paid about $33 for it and get 2 $10 decks, rules, tokens and 2 non-unique decks. Not a bad value I think. Not necessary, but not a bad price I figure.
I think the real idea behind the starter decks in the starter set are that you can learn them to be able to walk new players (or 2 new players) through the game vs "open deck, stares at cards, have no idea what synergies are and am expected to run new player through a good game".. lol... hopeful, FF will also have some logic behind the starter decks to hit the major parts of the game and show off 6 factions... hopefully
I’m excited to get into KeyForge casually. With such a low barrier to entry it looks like a fun way to mix up game night with a few pickup games, each with different decks!
Thank you for making this video. I have the same feeling hearing about this game and getting the starter set. The prospect of getting a completely unique set from a pack won me over, before I fully understood what the game was. Well that and the $10 price tag. 😊 I think that's the most appealing aspect of this game to me, that I don't have to buy multiple core sets in order to play or make my deck more viable, like in most LCGs. Plus don't have to worry about haggling prices or card trades for singles. 😆 I have a few questions, when will Keyforge be released? When might we be able to purchase tokens through your website?
Remember it's not impossible for no 2 decks to be the same, because although the decks are somewhat random, I'm sure there are also rules applied to the system for deck creation, and one of those rules sounds like it's that the deck must be unique. If two decks are alike, it sounds like it would be a manufacturing error. it sounds to me like the system is created for this to not happen.
That's actually what's turning me off. Randomly some people will have crazy good decks, others will have shit ones. That's not my kind of game. Doesn't come down to the player.
@@kaibe5241 Depends what you are looking for. Afaik they cut the top and flop decks so there will be a decent mid range and for you worst deck? Play “Best of the worst“ the opponent has to play yout afwul deck. If you are into deckbuilding and learning a meta... this wont be your game.
@@kaibe5241 Although since it's made with an algorithm, it's likely that nobody will have a deck that's super amazing. There just might be a deck that is a couple cards better than others. This would make it a deck with a bit of an edge over others, but I don't think it will make it a super amazing deck. Then you have to realize they'll come out with another release so the last release May not matter that much anymore. Or if something was a little overpowered, they could make it obsolete with another release possibly. I think the game will come down to skill, especially if you're trading decks every game in a tournament. Plus you'd have to have the good deck be in the hands of a good player.
Quick question are constant effects available to both players or the player who owns the card? Example constant effect on house shadow customs office #285 and speed sigil #293.
If you are new to the game but want a display how will we know which houses work best for us or we would like most? Is there a guide to their game play styles and how they relate to other games such as Magic?
No guide currently - but once the game releases we will all have a better understanding pretty quickly. That is something we will definitely consider covering in a future video/blog.
I am really digging this concept. If the game play is good this could be Garfield's second best game he has ever designed(Maybe number one, I hope) I really really like the unique deck concept! Did I say really? If not, then Really!
Just started playing and I love the game so far. The big problem without card games is the cost to get a decent deck, I can see that happening here sooner or later especially if the game gets bigger than it is but as of right now it seems pretty great. But I'm guessing if the game gets as big as other card games that's going to happen here too.
It really depends on how you're playing, too. We usually just do Sealed - everyone buys a random deck and plays a little tournament. In that format, it's always fresh and there's no need to buy tons of decks to find the best.
Talking about the set. So bacsiclly if you buy the set number 1 i shouldnt buy set number 1 again right? I thought all the decks are different. Or it's just different names but the same cards.
From their Facebook page. I don't know if it was officially stated that is what the token is, but seems right, based on comments. facebook.com/teamcovenant/photos/a.129711977068792/2333755229997778/?type=3&theater
Ryan P Also have to love the symbolism that Jonathan works into the detail. In this case a 6 pointed star to represent the 6 aember (usually) required to forge a key.
We have the Starters and Displays (via subscription)! Prices on Amazon are hugely inflated; our boxes are $95.52 (compared to $129.99). Find them on our site here: bit.ly/2QLH8V5 Local game stores might plan to stock as well if you have one you want to support. There is no confirmed release date, but we expect it before Jan 1.
My question would be: how many different cards are there? I understand that they are infinite cards based on stats; but what about art? How many different cards are they?
For the most part that is correct. But there are 2 different decks that only comes with the starter that will always be the same. The other 2 starter decks will be unique. Any decks you buy outside of the starter will be unique.
This is correct, but I'm really curious as to . I'm super jazzed about this game, but I'm getting a bit of a No Man's Sky ambition vibe about it. Infinite amount of unique decks? I just don't see how that's possible. Will you find another deck that's 99.9% the same deck as yours, but with only one measly card different? I don't know the number of different cards they have so far, but I would imagine that it would have to be the case as even with say 900 different cards, you'd eventually run out of possible deck combinations, right?? Especially if they're building decks strategically and not willy nilly.
I'm guessing it's going to be either that case of 1 card difference, or you're going to end up with some really poor decks. Chains might be a good counter-balance to it though.
Kai Be probably they probably would make in the future the ability to play with cards from others decks using sleeves it would be cool if they would maybe sell in the deck box sleeves with the deck’s logo
@@branchit9 right so does that mean you cant mix and match? Cause all that does is give you a name and a deck list, but what if I wanna combine two decks?
That's correct. You will not be able to mix and match. The name of the deck is not only on the back of the deck, but also on the playable side of the card. This makes using card sleeves to hide the fact you tweaked your deck impossible. Plus, the deck can only be 36 cards.
logan furey You can use sleeves! The name of the deck is also on the front of the card so even if someone is using Opaque sleeves you would still know what cards belong in the deck. There are also some nice sleeves with clear backs.
Man, that's cool this game was made by the guy who made magic, but the artwork is not nearly as cool. I was playing this game, at a shop, and then I looked over at the magic cards which I haven't played in Forever. The magic cards were just so cool and exciting it just got my heart pumping. Then I looked over at the key Forge cards.. But I suppose this could change over time. I really liked a couple of the Martians. But that's about it. I really like the one where he's got smoke going into his nose and he just looks like he's got some evil plan. Those aliens are cute. But that's about the extent of it.
I'm interested, but cautious...the game (from what I've seen) seems like it is all over the place beyond the factions and win comditions, that and FF have been disappointing in my eyes with the stuff they have been cancelling. But the Team Covenant learn to play vids have been interesting and I would, at keast like to give it a try.
Except it doesn't, there is balancing system you have to use if you discover your deck is "too good" and in the tournaments it's possible for decks to get banned.
This is an awful business model for any sort of hardcore/competitive play. looks like a game you can play at a friendly meeting or with a younger sibling but nothing more than that. No complexity, constructing or meta, just casual fun. Not for me, but it's probably a good starting point for ccg newcomers
How I imagine the Product Development meeting went down: ANA Exec. #1: "Our quality is in the toilet. We are seeing random cards end-up in decks without matching houses. WHAT DO WE DO?!?" ANA Exec. #2: "Easy. We call them "mavericks" and tell customers that that they were intentionally populated that way with a very limited frequency. It's a feature, man!" ANA Exec. #1: "Noice. Send the memo to Marketing. Let's break for lunch!"
I'm very concerned about the business model in competitive play. The gameplay looks solid, but since there is in fact a limited cardpool, there will be a "meta" of the most competitive decks. Competitive players will be forced to buy massive number of packs in order to get decks that contain enough of the meta cards to be competitive... it's basically lootboxes taken to the real world.
Manzell Blakeley Card games with any kind of randomization in the distribution model have always been lootboxes since before lootboxes were even a concept. The secondary market is basically a "third party" work around to that. But I totally get what you're saying.
I was also afraid about it, but there was a list of official competetive formats, and most of them creatively sidesteped this issue. For example, in one format players play against each other, then swap decks in next game, then if it's tie, they bid handicap (chains) on deck. So, it's more important how you play with your deck, not how objectively strong it is.
The QR codes will tell what each deck is made of and will provide statistics of what tournament winning decks consist of. If certain combinations are overpowered, they will know and could flag decks with certain combinations for getting chains or being banned.
It's sad for me to say it but... I think I'd stick with normal TCGs than peek at this. Only calling out one of the houses and playing all of that house in one turn seems like it's just giving people Agro a lot without paying which feels like the battle is an afterthought. (likely is) And the fact that the goal is to get the 3 keys which are only 18 points in groups of 6 makes it that you aren't doing much to gain other than either stealing or gathering and not affecting the opposing soul that you are against. 3) This feels like all of them are nitpicks but when the only customization is through getting a different deck means that being really competitive can get out of control because one is purchasing so many or buying from the second-hand market to get at the top of the game. Which can make someone a killing and likely it won't be the ones who make the game. So excuse me for thinking Mr. Garfield might have goofed up on this one but even the father of all games might have flaws. This is kind of a rant from an old card gamer but if this is the 'future' of cardboard experiences, I might wanna say no.

So it's a TDG, Trading Deck Game.
A fantasy flight card game that you can get into for $10, without having to buy any extras to experience the full game? Never would have guessed that one
Nick Sbordone you will buy entire $10 decks instead of singles
I ordered the starter set. It's not bad value for money on the Internet since I paid about $33 for it and get 2 $10 decks, rules, tokens and 2 non-unique decks. Not a bad value I think. Not necessary, but not a bad price I figure.

It is amazing to us that a new person can come into a store and, for ten dollars, spend the night playing games with a brand new deck.
Back in the late 90s when I first saw MTG in my friendly local comic store, this is exactly what I thought it was, but without the randomness.
Looking forward to see what the tokens you make for the game will look like.
Will your token sets be ready for release? Getting a display box + a set of Covenant tokens sounds like a super enticing alternative to a core set
They should be!
Thank you for making this video.

when is this game going to show up in game stores?
It is out now Joshua, and we have a starter option available: bit.ly/2QJyfLb

if you are buying tokens, stun tokens should definitely be included! If not, then whatever works, works!
