Sometimes if you absolutely love a song or album at first listen, it may get old quicker. Supertramp is different, doesn’t seem to be great at first, but then you find yourself wanting to listen to it more. The more you listen , you find how great it is. It just does not get old.

If I was gonna be stuck on an island with 10 songs, I'm taking this one
1st heard this when I was about 12. We had an old piano at home, I'd never taken an interest in. This song changed that. Today, at 53 yrs old I'm a pretty good guitarist, most would say, but I'll always think of myself as a piano player

Back when I "discovered" Supertramp, I found that it took a while to grow on me. Too often these days people want that instant gratification, you have to hook them right away or else they lose interest. I'm not saying that you are like that, but I hope when you're finished with this album you'll just sit back and just listen to the whole thing through once or twice.

Really good point, often over looked these days. Very often the tracks that take the longest to get into are the ones that leave the deepest and longest impression. One of the advantages to listening to albums on vinyl, as this would have been, is that you had to listen to tracks that were between the singles or the more obviously commercial tracks, unless you could be bothered to skip the arm over tracks. So you just let it play, and slowly, over time, by osmosis, these tracks seep into your bones, your head and your heart.

Good c0mment. We hear some songs repeatedly on the radio as a backdrop to our lives, and they grew on us that way, but those of us who bought albums got to have album repitition. Mood. I may have missed buying a mere 1 or 2 early Supertramp albums. Live in Paris was my favorite album to listen to tho.

A marvelous album by Supertramp..this was the era of Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, ELP,..and slightly less prog, but great bands like 10cc, ELO, Moody Blues..the days when buying an album and reading the lyrics going home on the bus were a tactile part of everything

Thanks for reviewing this song. This Album by Supertramp is to me a timeless masterpiece. I was a teenager when it was released. I first heard it at my boyfriend's house who was older than I was, and he was a devout fan. He had a stereo system comprised of four Bose 901 speakers with a Technics turntable and equally high quality amp, tuner etc...The sound was loud & incredible. "Crime of the Century " was prominent in the list of records we listened to a lot. It had been almost 4 decades since I heard "Asylum". Until 2 days ago and It hit me in the gut and literally made me cry. What you said about the build up is true. I think the vocals throughout the song are perfect and the scorching guitar toward the end is haunting and beautiful. This song has stood the test of time.

The grittiness of Rick's writing and Roger's more emotional understanding really makes this album what it is. Rick has some incredible vocals!

  • @TheVerdilac
    @TheVerdilac 4 года назад +11

You connecting this song to Hide In Your Shell makes sense since this album was an accidental concept album. There are recurring themes and what appears to be an over-arching story which the band claims was completely unintentional. The ending of this song, for me, was always the highlight and I agree the rest of the song does a great job building up to it. As far as the singing goes, you don't have to be a musical genius to tell that these guys are not very 'schooled' singers, if you can overlook the pun lol. I see their voices as very unique and emotional rather than pitch perfect and classically trained. With that said, both Rick and Roger's voices work oddly well together even if they'll never make a top 20 rock singers list anywhere. The charm is in the quirky, theatrical vocal approach they take. At least, that's how I feel about them.
Hope you have a good day man!

I had a 4th row ticket at I believe the Ford Auditorium in Detroit for the 'Crime of the Century' album in '74 or so, and was very excited to see them. The bad news, the concert was cancelled for lack of ticket sales. I did get to see Genesis do The Lamb lies downnon Broadway live in Detroit, although the venue was half filled. Ridiculous, 'The Lamb' was the best concert I ever saw. But I love Supertramp, ELP and Pink Floyd. When I was growing up we did not call it Prog, or progressive or anything else. One of eight masterpieces from their best album, says this longtime(1975) Supertramp fan. Lyrically, about gradually losing sanity. Musically, jazz/blues/rock swirl, the opening almost a 1940s feel, then, the chorus ( if you can call it that), the rock kicks in. Great arrangement/production here, especially the strings at just the right moments. Roger Hodgson's guitar adding to the strangeness of the lyrics, unique ending ( the cuckoo sound) reinforces the theme. Even better live

I really don't know how Ken Scott managed to get that humongous sound, fusing the instruments together, it's simply amazing. The moments at the end where the music stops and you are left with the massive reverb is a shocking reveal as to how overgrown the sound has become while building so inconspicuously for the duration of the song. - Just like waking up from a mad trance.

It’s such an immediate, visceral thing, whether you like the tone , timbre, the exact sound of someone’s voice, so I get what you’re saying there. The same thing happens with me and I think it’s basically beyond our control. It’s possible someone’s voice can grow on you but that doesn’t always happen. One voice I don’t always enjoy that much is Jon Anderson’s. Rick Davies’ voice, here, did grow on me over time. Roger Hodgson‘s voice, their other singer, I liked more immediately. That said, you appreciated the compositional quality of this tune. It is quite well done, in my opinion also.

Hi There! Let me explain it to you since you did a pretty good job of describing what we were listening to, but may have missed a couple of strong points or two. This song is a masterpiece! It is a song written for anyone and everyone, it has no boundaries! It is about our inner thoughts and feelings that we sometimes keep pushing down or ignoring. This is the mental awareness of oneself and questioning their sanity. It's how it relates to me, and you, I believe that others might agree with me; that we sometimes say and do things that are questionable or "crazy", which puts us at risk of others questioning people's sanity! I truly believe that we are all BI-POLAR to some extent, no one is completely normal, because who makes the decision, where does the line stop, and then crossed to prove that you are not normal? This song reminds us that we can cross that line and possibly have to deal with the consequences. I've been listening to this whole album since I was 13 years old, so that would be 46 years now and no matter how many times I play this song, I get so much gratification by singing along with it! In a way, I'm letting others know where I'm coming from without actually saying I'm not psychotic. Thank you for playing this gem, and I would like to ask you one question, what do you think about the way music is so easily manufactured today in comparison to the music of the late 60s to late 70s, but before disco sneaked its way into mainstream music? Do you think music today could use some more originality, actual musical instruments, less computer dependency and a host of other qualities that are much different compared to the "OLD SCHOOL" music? I'm very curious to get your perspective on it, thanks again, Eugene.

It's a good but flawed album, and Asylum is a perfect representation of it, with moments of dullness interrupted by moments of brilliance and some of the most gorgeous stuff. I don't think you will find any surprises with this album from now on that will change the perception you have of it now, but that final title track will surely bring you back.

Rick Davies was always the more Bluesy side of Supertramp. I like his voice a lot, not more than Hodgson's though, they complement each other. Never boring to me. On that album, they give their all and every song on here is quite progressive not through odd transitions but thanks to great arranging. That's why I call it ProgPop.

I didn't care for this song either when I first heard it .. but this entire album has grown on me immensely over the years. All of the songs age well upon revisits. The yet to come Rudy is Rick's best track on the album in my opinion.

I don't think it's at all clear whether he's mad or they are. It reminds me a bit of the clip for "Everything For Free" by K's Choice. It's not the "patient" screaming "He's mad mad mad mad mad mad mad" and "Not quite right!", but they're the one or ones who sound the most unhinged.

I get you - it is an acquired taste. Most prog is. And this is when Supertramp really was prog (1974). They were different than Crimson, Genesis, ELP and of course PF. Speaking of different, intense, musically unclassifiable is a certain band which I'm sure you'll be revisiting soon.

I will add a suggestion here that might be unpopular. Dreamer that is the next song bridges into Rudy. The songs are complete opposite where Dreamer is like a prelude to the entire album Breakfast in America.. that came 5 years later, Dreamer is a pop song and Rudy is so dramatic but together they go..
Edit here... dang it, i correct myself the whole side B goes together in a long sweep, each song fit into each other. JP, when this journey is over, take a moment, just close your eyes and listen to the 4 songs on side B in a sweep... it is not like Genesis Supper’s Ready but it is Supertramp’s Supper’s Ready if you get what I mean

Many of The 70s albums are story tellers from start to finish and very philosophical at times and very boring at certain points but the Albums were what grew on you after several listens that you hated and did not want to hear anymore after you gave it a chance and then some of them ended up to be your all time favs ..

I had a bet with myself whether you’d leave the song long enough to catch the cuckoo at the end. I lost. I have to be honest and say that this album needed a number of listens to “get” especially as you point out with the singing. I am pleased that I persevered, though.

I suppose people who react to music on YT channels are taking into account what the ‘viewers’ request.
Can we get some support for 10 cc? There really was no other band quite like it, and I mean that in a good way. Start anywhere I suppose, but go deep. How Dare You, Somewhere in Hollywood, One Night in Paris, Headroom, Art for Art’s Sake.

Hi JP. Agree. I heard this album in the mid 70s and couldn't get to grip with his voice then and time hasn't changed that. It still grates.
And yes the finale is brilliant but boy.....you have to wait so so long that by the time it gets there I almost don't care. In my opinion they should have cut a verse out, giving it far more impact. Thanks.

FYI - In case the reviewer doesn't already know this.....Supertramp is quite unique in that they are a KEYBOARD driven band. They also happen to have the two greatest keyboard players of all time in rock music with Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson. Their musicianship is world-class and when you combine that with their brilliant arrangements and thought provoking lyrics you have one of the greatest bands that ever existed. There is a REASON why countless music critics (over the years) have compared Davies and Hodgson to Lennon and McCartney from the Beatles.

Supertramp is the master of the build-up and transitions, and there is so much going on in the background of many of their early songs. Your criticism of the singing being subdued at the start is unwarranted IMHO as I am convinced it is purposeful. The character is in denial about their mental condition so there's lighter vocals but by the end he has to be more vocal because his life/freedom is on the line. Ironically, you said the music didn't go over the deep end but that is what is implied at the end with the descending (jumping) vocal plus the little cuckoo clock sound at the end - crazy and suicide?

Hey, can’t win them all. The best with this album is that it gets better as it goes. Supertramp it is a voice centric group and for me this song is just fantastic. Next song is Dreamer, catchy but not in style with the rest of the songs on this album, more like the songs on Crisis what Crisis.
