  • In this episode of the Toronto Dog Whisperer I take you through the simple, easy steps to make your own homemade bone broth for your dog or cat.
    Even with the extra ingredients to make the “ultimate” version of this bone broth I spent less than $6.00 to make 4 litres (1 gallon) of this nutritious supplement.
    Store it in the fridge, freeze it, or make some for a friend!
    Ingredients:
    Beef joint bones - $1.50
    Chicken carcas - $0.50
    Salmon head - $1.60
    Apple cider vinegar
    Simply simmer your ingredients at a very low heat covered for 24 hours, let it cool, discard bones, blend soft tissue, meat, and fat. Store in the fridge or freezer.
    DO NOT GIVE YOUR PET COOKED BONES!
    Bone Broth Is Good For Joints
    In the book Deep Nutrition, Dr Cate Shanahan writes “The health of your joints depends upon the health of the collagen in your ligaments, tendons, and on the ends of your bones. Collagens are a large family of biomolecules, which include the glycosaminoglycans, very special molecules that help keep our joints healthy.”
    Bone broth is loaded with glycosaminoglycans and you might even be familiar with one of them: glucosamine. Not only does bone broth contain super amazing amounts of glucosamine, it’s also packed with other joint protecting compounds like chondroitin and hyaluronic acid.
    Moreover, the glycosaminoglycans from bone broth are resistant to digestion and are absorbed in their intact form. According to Dr Shanahan, they act like hormones, stimulating cells called fibroblasts, which lay down collagen in the joints, tendons, ligaments, and even the arteries.
    Bone Broth Helps The Liver Detox
    The liver is the master organ of detoxification. The dog’s liver is under assault daily as the poor dog lies on carpets and floors treated with chemicals, walks on grass that’s been treated and sprayed with poisons, consumes foods with toxic and synthetic ingredients, and suffers through toxic dewormers, flea and tick preventives, drugs, antibiotics, vaccines and more.
    The liver was never meant to suffer this onslaught and its capacity to detoxify is limited by the availability of the amino acid glycine. Guess what has tons of glycine? Bone broth!
    Bone Broth Promotes A Healthy Gut
    The lining of the intestines contains millions of tiny holes that allow the passage of digested nutrients to enter the body. Stress, poor diet and bacterial overgrowth can cause more holes to open or to become bigger…this is called leaky gut.
    The problem with those big holes is that things can pass through that aren’t meant to, including undigested food matter, toxins and yeast. The body will notice those undigested food particles as foreign invaders and start to attack them. This is how allergies and food sensitivities develop.
    Bone broth is loaded with a gooey substance that can plug up those leaky holes: gelatin!
    Bone Broth Is Great Nutrition For Sick Dogs
    Have you ever had a dog with terrible diarrhea and had trouble getting him back on solid food? Or a dog who is convalescing and doesn’t have a great appetite but you know he needs more nutrition?
    Bone broth to the rescue!
    Studies conducted in the 1800’s showed that when there is plenty of gelatin in the diet, the body’s need for protein from meat sources can be reduced by as much as fifty percent! Bone broth is also an excellent source of important minerals and can bolster the immune system (think chicken soup)!
    Bone broth is also loaded with glycine, which aids digestion by helping to regulate the synthesis of bile salts and secretion of gastric acid.
    Here’s a list of just some of the nutrients in this bone broth:
    Glucosamine, Chondroitin, Gelatin, Amino acids, Fatty acids, Omega 3, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc, Manganese, Selenium, Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Vitamin B12, Pantothenic Acid, Choline, Betaine

    1 tip is to add the fish the last hour or two before you finish the bone broth as fish stock only takes 1 hour to make.

    I did it Saturday. Marrow bones are easy to find. I couldn’t find a salmon head so used a pound of salmon collard for 5 bucks. I also, for the first time,
    purchased and cut a whole chicken which was quite easy (and delicious for us). The rest was pretty easy. Thanks again. Def Subscribed.

    You could also these ingredients added to bottom pot: 1 carrot cut, 3 shitake mushrooms, 1 celery cut, 4 pc broccoli, 3-4 peppercorns, 1 tsp turmeric, 1 bay leaf, 1 sprig rosemary and 1 small kale and put your bones, carcass and the head, and water to cover it and then vinegar.

    Awesome 👍. I've made bone broth for years for myself as a nutritional supplement. I've fed it to our cats ( they're on a raw diet ). I never thought to blend the soft tissue into the mixture as pet food. Our cat will be super happy to get the addition. Our new pup will be super charged. I used to give the cooked down cartilage and soft tissue to our chickens but I guess I'll give it them as a bone broth mixed with stone cut oats. Chickens need the mineral content for optimal health, protein to lay delicious eggs, and fats to keep them warm in winter....of course as a supplement. Thanks for your efforts ✨
    BTW, if you're concerned about bad bacteria buildup on the egg shells, bake them in the oven @180°f for a couple of hours before grinding them into a powder. The heat from the baking should kill off any unwanted bacteria.

    My dog, a min pin/doxie mix (funny because the min pin is part doxie to begin with) was in so much pain the vet put her on 5 MG of gabapentin 3 times a day. Every morning I was worried I find her deceased.
    I started giving her bone broth and I am no longer worried. She has a vigor I haven’t ever seen in her. When I adopted her I was told she was 8. Three days after I brought her home, she was screaming. I mean screaming. So loudly when I call the vet they had me bring her in immediately. That’s when she was put on the the gabapentin. She is between 13 and 15. The next visit her gabapentin dose upped. $90 a month.
    Even though marrow bones are $3.49 a pound, this is much cheaper than the gabapentin.
    I never thought of putting fish heads in it, but will next time I make it (I have some in the crock pot now) I will try it.
    The change in her is amazing. I put it in ice cube trays and freeze it. TIP: if you freeze any ice cube and donʼt want them to stick to each other as they are wont to do, put them in a paper bag. Sounds weird but it really works. Really.

Once we found bone broth, and other supplements l, we decided never again, will we use gabapentin. We truly thought we’d lose him, but the whole time, it was the gaba, that was making him decline 😢

      There are a lot of variables to consider, so difficult for me to say. The general rule of thumb is the richer and denser your bone broth, the less you should give.
      In my case with a healthy, fit, active dog and very dense broth, a couple big table spoons per meal. With a less dense (more soup like density) about a half cup per meal.
      Hope that helps.

    • @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  4 года назад +2

      Depending on how it’s stored, you can keep it in the fridge for weeks. I have sealed glass mason jars that keep for weeks. If you want to keep it for longer periods of time, freezing it is best. Don’t freeze it in glass jars.

      And what about amounts per day? I feed my dog with raw diet and want to add this "soup" as supplement (he is japanese akita). So in ml how much I can add of this "goody" so it won't be too much. And can I give it daily?

    • @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  4 года назад +2

      Moline Sraige it depends on how rich and dense you make it. For a large, healthy, active dog, you can add 4 table spoons per day if you’ve made something similar to what I made in the video. Every dog is different.

      Bone broth is a great way to help a dog eat that hasn’t eaten in a while. It’s got lots of great nutrition and easy to digest. My only advice is to leave them be after putting food out for them.

      @@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115 Thanks for that. One more quick thing: Is it ok to give raw liver as a training treat, or is dehydrated the only way to go?

    • @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  4 года назад +2

      SFMC 98 Raw Liver is fine as a treat as long as it’s fresh. Liver treats aren’t really meant for training as they are very rich. Liver treats are ok a couple times a day, but for training you’ll want something that you can give a lot of. Kibble works great or chicken jerky in small pieces.

      You could buy a whole chicken, take of the legs, and use in the dog meat take off the breasts and freeze. And use the carcas for your broth. I'm not sure but perhaps chicken wings would serve the same purpose. When I make chicken stock for soup I use chicken wings which gives a lovely thick gelatinous stock.

    I think your recipe is excellent, however,... I know you mentioned that Organic is not necessary, but Organic is always the better choice !!! If Organic is better for humans, it is surely better for animals ! The reason so many animals and people have cancer is because of the carcinogens in the meat supply. The hormones and chemicals they put in the meat is atrocious ! I have a good friend who is a world famous holistic doctor, and he taught me what they put in the meat ! I switched to Organic and never went back ! I love my pets, as they are my family, so I feed them Organic as well. Organic is only a few dollars more, and they are so worth it if you love your pets !!!
