    How about that f16 long exposure timelapse to kick this one off? Also interested to know your take on the new system here. I'm happy with the glass and colour/image quality. Not so happy with the frames but I do really like the notch adjustment system. I'm torn, like Natalie Imbruglia.

      Greg. I'm an ambassador for Benro over here in France. Like you I wasn't sure about the frames. However, did you know that Benro do another filter holder?

    • @DavidSenteno
      @DavidSenteno 5 лет назад

      I sometimes wonder if these companies have an actual Photographer on their design team. I just don't understand why the filter and frame can't be one piece. Also why can't the polarizer be a segmented square that would change polarity as you raise and lower it, then there wouldn't be a need for removing to spin it. I love to bring order out of chaos so feel free to let Benro know I'd be happy to share my ideas. Begginer as they might be.
      BTW I'm also like Natalie Imbruglia, I wish I was there.

      @@DavidSenteno it's not really my place to say too much. I personally prefer the other filter holder that Benro offer but have been told that other photographers like the one that Greg has. I do have it but it's not ideal for me.
      I have actually spoken to Benro about it and they are very receptive as a company to ideas unlike certain more well known filter companies out there. That is a good thing!
      With regards to companies employing photographers. That I have to wonder with companies. I spoke to a backpack company earlier this year whose speciality is photography backpacks. I explained to them that although the actual photography bag was near perfect for a travel photographer it was let down by the pocket that holds the laptop. That it was extremely thin and offered little to no protection. Which is completely daft! And they have a number of well known photographers as ambassadors which makes me wonder just how involved they are.

      @@JulianElliottPhotography Hey Julian thanks for the response. I hope I didn't come across as angry. I was just expressing my thoughts. I'm glad to hear Benro is listening. Maybe someone will read these comments and we will see a change. Of course if someone made a perfect filter system then that would limit the number of filter system review videos that could be done. Wait!....It's a conspiracy!...lol.
      Peace.

      David Senteno no, you definitely didn’t come across as angry! I think, personally, we have a right to express an opinion when we are putting our money and time into products.
      What you hope is that things get noticed and acted upon.

    Hi, Benro UK here 😊 We have watched Greg's video and here are some comments from the UK brand manager.
    Firstly the bag, the bag we would like to have supplied was out of stock so we supplied a bag for a larger system, but there is a bag designed to hold the 100x150mm filters whilst in their frames.
    Then regarding the filter holder. We receive a mix of feedback - some love the frame and gearing system, others love the traditional style holder. No one is right or wrong, you use what you prefer. If you don’t like the system with frames and gearing, we offer a traditional filter holder where you manually adjust your filter level and it uses no frames.
    Greg’s comments about the framed filters not fitting in the filter wallets is something that has been noted and we will investigate making the wallets large enough to take a framed filter - the idea of the system is that you load the filters into the frames and you leave them there, so being able to protect them still in the frame is important.
    And what was the reason for the frames - the concept was to provide the photographer with the ability to have control over the height positioning of the grad filter in the mount which is driven by the gearing mechanism in the holder but to make that work you need the frame with the notched edge. The frame does also help protect the filter and it means when you handle it, you can hold the frame edge rather than the actual filter.
    Comments about the CPL being fiddly to load. This is something we’re already looking to fix and we have prototype units out being tested that make the process of loading and unloading the CPL much simpler and less fiddly.
    Finally, we are listening 👍 Feedback from all our customers is noted and shared with the Benro R&D team and if that feedback can be implemented to improve a product then Benro will consider it.

    • @gregorsnell
      @gregorsnell  5 лет назад +7

      Benro UK in the house!! Nice to see such a detailed & honest response. I'm happy to know your R&D team are taking these points into consideration. Having a smaller bag with felt dividers would be a great fix for two of my current issues. I'll order that asap.
      I actually really like the idea of the frames, you're right they offer good protection to the glass and being able to adjust the height positioning in the mount with the gearing mechanism is an awesome development.
      The CPL is something I need more experience actually using in the field, but yes a new prototype would be nice to see in the future for sure. GREAT to see your presence here and the detailed comment. This is the sign of an positively engaged brand.

      Just bought the system, so still learning about it. But not being able to slot the framed filters back into the lovely felt bags is v irritating. And, bad for you, it has discouraged me from buying additional frames, as I can't then store them easily in the pouches.

    In the last two years some new or improved systems appeared on the market but none of them is perfect. If you take all these reviews you might be able to create a perfect filter system. But even this would not suit everybody because there are many different requirements (portability, use in rough environment, price...). I will stay with my Rollei system... Thanks for the wonderful b-roll material around the filters 😁👍🏼

    I have a smaller filterbag from Benro, and it often ends up in my camerabag. The filterholder is ok, but placing the polariser is a bit slowly, and turning the filter make some noice - like turning a filter on a lens. Having the filters in the frames is to me part of the reason to get them. It makes them easy to hold and do protect the glass from fingerprints and dirt - and the filterframes can not drop out off the filterholder by accident. I have used the system for a year, and find that it works for me, but when not knowing other systems it is imposible to say if the filters are realy good or just ok compared to others.

    Interesting, I like the adjustment knobs on the Benro filter holder. I currently use the Nisi V5 filter system and I've been happy with it. I also use the Mindshift gear filter hive, which I've also been pretty happy with, to carry the filters in my backpack. Thanks for your candid review. As I've mentioned to you before, overall I like and use other Benro products. Safe journeys!

    The frames are what make the system for me. You don't have to touch the filters with dirty fingers on the field, and they are (kind of) protected (a little bit more than naked filter).
    It seems that your main problem was the bag and the way they are stored ? would using a compartimented filter pouch be an option ? or find slightly larger individual felt pouches ?
    I always disliked the protruding polarizer on the lee system, especially on shots where you don't want to use ND filters (in which case light leaks like crazy). It also forces you to buy a much larger polarizer.
    But on the other hand, attaching/removing the polarizer with this system seems finnicky aswell ... maybe if it could be attached from the lens side, instead of under the square filters ? or maybe the easiest solution would be to have 2 holders, one with the polarizer and one without, wich is not a great solution either.
    Thanks for the honest review though, and for the great content you provide here and on BvS's and T.Heat's channels !

    I have this system with an upgraded filter holder that is really annoying. It now has a spring loaded button next to the red dial that moves the filters up and down in the holder. In order to turn the dial, the spring loaded button has to be pushed in, a totally unnecessary addition that now requires using two hands instead of one. I resorted to cutting off the spring and gluing the button in. The system itself is fantastic and the filter holders are brilliant, reducing the need to touch the glass and you can make accurate adjustments very easily. I haven't noticed any colour casts at all when using the glass filters but I don't know about the resin ones as I don't own any. The polariser is excellent quality. The smaller filter bag is compact and excellent and I leave the filters in the frames and they fit in the small bag. I don't see the point of removing them from the frame.

    I am using Formatt Hittech Firecrest holder and from what I see from your video, is is even slower to use compared to Benro one. I have no experience with filter system which has filter frames but I wanted to try something like that because I assume that it should have as good protection against light leaks as my current one but more convenient. Formatt has extra peaces of plastic inserts which I have to change depending on the type of the filters I would use every time I am out shooting which is a lot of hustle. I think the first system which had filter frames was Wine Country Camera, but it is very expensive and bulky. It is good that we have other variants of such approach on the market now.

  • @grmrtnz
    @grmrtnz 5 лет назад +1

    Greg the main complaint of people with Lee Filters were centered around the flimsy plastic holder and the it's price. I solved that issue using a Zioti holder and rings (a fraction of the price of the Lee's). All filters in my are Lee, but I saved a ton of money on the foundation kit! My only issue has been when shooting @ 16mm since the polarizer ring (105mm) creates a vignetting effect. Other than that, I'm happy with the setup!
    Like you, I love some of the features of the Benro system. It looks very clever and handy. But I would probably be as frustrated as you with the extra space it will take in my bag. Excellent review and better pictures!

    I watched the next video you linked to as well regarding the Benro filters. It looks like you can adjust the polarizing filter from nearest the lens easily... just not remove it quite as easily. The bag space may not be as much of an issue for those of us with non-nomadic lifestyles. Guess you could use your other filter pouch. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

    • @gregorsnell
      @gregorsnell  5 лет назад

      Yeah these are minimal issues really, it's only from experience of changing filters in crummy conditions and limited time that I could foresee more potential complications. Overall though I do really like the system and have been still using it. Just need to get the divider pouch.

    Those are some amazing images! The Benro filters did a great job! Other than a UV filter, I actually don't own any filters right now, but I'm considering on getting some in the near future. The Lee filters sound like they might be great for newcomers with filters. Awesome footage! I'm looking forward to seeing you in Bali in a few days!

    I have the opposite feeling than you and really like to keep the filters in the frame. My bag is smaller and easier to travel with. But as you I have not used the CPL in holder but connect to the lens before I put the ring on. Make it more easy to put on and off. A solution is to have 2 holders and just change them and slide the filters in.

    • @gregorsnell
      @gregorsnell  5 лет назад

      Hi Arnfinn, that's a great idea regarding the CPL on the ring beforehand. Does the FH100M2 holder then fit over it...? I'll try it today and see :) Thanks for the great comment.

    Mad props for your honesty, Greg. Looks like the filters did the job on the long exposures...nice! Also some great shots at the end of the vid.
    You might want to search on the online camera stores (B&H, Adorama, etc.) for "Lee filter wrap", and check out the one that holds 3 filters. I have one of those and it seems like there might be enough play to allow you to hold the filters in their frames. Could be a cheap alternative to what you're doing. If you're shooting with T.Heat anytime soon, I think that I noticed in a vid that he has his filters in one of these so you might be able to check out his to see if it would work for you.
    Cheers!

    Benro does have an interesting system for sure, for me I have been using the Wine Country Camera systems which also uses frames so that one does not have to touch filter and the frames take pretty much any standard 100 X 100 or the Grad in 100 X 150. In addition they have the polarizer with a simple knob that set as the first filter in the system to the lens which can be easily removed. My favorite part is for the grad filter (2nd and 3rd slot) usage, they have a simple button that allows for easy adjustment and placement.Not sure but I think Benro and some other may have picked up some of the features that WCC started with. Regardless be very happy with Benro product and my heavy tripod is a Benro and it is a killer and great. All said though for filter system I love my Wine Country Camera systems thought to be honest they are on of the higher cost ones.

    The lens used was it a 16-35mm f2.8 or f4, and why don't you use a lee filter pouch (the sand coloured one same as on your table), its smaller and more compact with soft separate pockets that would protect the filter when in the holders, also clips nicely to a tripod leg with the additional strap that comes with it.

    • @gregorsnell
      @gregorsnell  5 лет назад

      Colin, the 16-35 is the 2.8. Yeah the LEE Tan Punch is a good option, but I think Benro also makes a smaller version bag with felt dividers as well. See their comment on this same video.

    Like vlog and the honesty mate. Some great innovations but the frames seem super annoying. That polariser faf would also drive me nuts. I’ve switched to the new Lee holder and polariser setup and it is nice to use. For me, it would great to see Lee evolve their current system a bit further and incorporate some of the cool things that others are doing... dial to move filters up and down is a great idea... ramble over! Look forward to seeing Bali (I was THAT close to coming.... next time). Cheers Jase

    Absolutely loved the idea of having a case that you can put around the filter just in case you drop it, don't like the idea that you can't put the filter and the case back in the felt pouches as you said. Also don't like the way the polarizer filter is I think it would put me off using it too.
    But the one thing I do love about this system that I didn't know about until watching this video is the mechanism to move the filters up and down that I do really like. I think there's a few little tweaks here and there this could be a fantastic filter system.

    Tengo el sistema anterior a este de aluminio, también. Por lo que veo Benro continua con el mismo sistema de colocación del polarizador. Eso se mantiene igual en ambas versiones. A mí me resulta incomodo porque el polarizador es muy delgado y es muy fácil de que se pueda caer al intentar colocarlo. Creo que el sistema de Lee al tenerlo adelante es mucho más comodo. Más allá de ese detalle, el polarizador Benro es excelente, es un cristal con mucha tecnología, muy fácil de limpiar y se pueden combinar con los demás filtros Benro y las imágenes no pierden calidad.

    Great vlog Greg. Love your honesty. Seems pretty simple to me (Benro, are you listening?). Just have the pouches bigger to fit the frames in while they are holding the glass. Simple, no fuss, less time consuming and...the frames still do what they are designed to.
