  • Is there any show more perfectly suited for a gay '90s romp than Frasier? When the show the first premiered, television often treated gay characters as a source of fear. But by the time Frasier was in its final season, lots of sitcoms were having a gay old time.

I was outed in 80s, told I would die from AIDS and beat up in locker room. My first boyfriend in mid 90s was painfully closeted. Thankfully so much has improved to help us lead happier lives.

I keep saying I'm so glad I went to art school back then, but there was still a lot of problems. 1980 or so, I remember one of my friends coming to me in a panic, "Did you know X was gay?" Well, considering I'd already slept with him... yes, yes I did. I still didn't show my own trans identity. Heck, I barely knew what it meant... long story... long story... happy today, though.

I've never understood the freakout about having a gay guy be interested in you, as a straight guy. I've had it happen to me multiple times when I was in my 20s, and it really wasn't a big deal. It wasn't any different than having a girl I wasn't interested in ask me out. I just would politely decline, say "Thanks but I'm not gay.", and that would be it. As the first Frasier episode illustrates, it's a pretty easy thing to defuse when there is some miscommunication.

Mr. Sheffield suffers from gay panic a couple of times but Fran kisses other women without a second thought and when a lesbian assumes she’s gay and let’s slip she would have asked her out if she was she actually briefly considers it before turning her down cause she’s not Jewish.

He fits some gay stereotypes pretty well and if he was a character in a show today, he would probably be gay. But in The Nanny he's straight. It isn't just not commented on, he has sex with a woman at least once and doesn't have any relationships with men.

Will & Grace was both a step forward and a step back for LGBT representation on television. On one hand it was nice to see a show where gay characters were the main characters instead of just supporting or guest. But on the other hand it also enforced a lot of stereotypes and keep in mind that openly gay actor John Barrowman, who you might know for his work on Doctor Who, auditioned for the role of Will but was rejected for being "too straight". The show would later cast a straight actor Eric McCormack as Will.

"Ellen" was "the first time a sitcom's lead character was queer"? I'm afraid not. The first U.S. network prime-time show to have a gay lead (and title) character, a sitcom, was "Love, Sidney," starring Tony Randall, that aired on NBC from 1981 to 1983. Wikipedia: "['Love, Sidney'] was the first program on American television to feature a gay character as the central character...." Granted, it's addressing of LGBT issues was more muted than later shows would be, but it at least deserves mentioning. I'm a little surprised that "Love, Sidney" hasn't come up at all on any of these "Culture Cruises."

"Number 96" was a prime-time soap-opera set in a block of flats in Sydney, first screened in Australia in 1972 and the highest-rated television show two years running. One of the main characters in the show for the duration of the series was a gay lawyer, liked by all the other characters and popular with viewers.
After a long-running flirtation, one of his female neighbours confessed she was in love with him; when he told her he thought she knew he was "a homosexual" she called him "a filthy, dirty queer" and threw him out of her apartment. The woman's flatmate however, had realised the lawyer was gay and accepted the fact without comment; she told the other woman to do the same for the sake of their friendship, threatening to move out if she could not.
I think because the gay character was so likeable and the female character was so genuinely sorry, on reflection, for her awful behaviour, the show probably had a positive influence on public opinion at the time. Following the incident, the two characters became good friends and the lawyer's romantic relationships were treated much the same as those of the other characters (except that he was only shown in bed with his boyfriend when the producers turned the series into a feature-film).

One of the biggest sitcoms of all times was missed in the video "Friends". Since episode 1 we are introduced to Ross's ex wife Susan who realised that she was gay. The entire series include Susan and Carol's story of love and building a family. In season 2 which aired in 1995 Susan and Carol get married. There are many other gay characters along the series. And my fav part is again in S02 where Phoebe finds out that her ex husband is actually not gay (he was claiming he was before). There is a reverse monologue of the struggles to come out.

Very good essay! I'm kind of amazed that I remember almost every moment you included. Shows how meaningful any non-negative depiction of gayness on television was to this young gay man in the 90s.

I really liked how Golden Girls addressed gay men. The problem was homophobia from my perspective, not homosexuality.
I'm not overly fond of a small detail in their lesbian episode despite overall enjoying it. There was a line about how Rose and the lesbian (I forget the character's name) sleeping in the same room and Rose didn't know the character had a crush on her and everyone else in the house worries for Rose possibly getting touched or worse. We aren't rapists! I don't think they intended to perpetuate that insulting and incorrect assumption about lesbians as the rest of the episode handled it well and Rose's character, if I remember correctly, wasn't fond of her roommates making that assumption regardless of the crush this woman had on her but it still really rubbed me the wrong way.

I told my sons when they were in their teens that if they were gay I would still love them the same. I didn’t want them to feel they couldn’t tell me and would want to die. They both told me they weren’t gay. I never had a reason to believe they were. I just wanted them to know I loved them.

I think the "I can't believe it's not heterosexuality" joke in The Matchmaker is a little different too though. I think that's also a joke about Frasier's obliviousness and self-absorption. He's so convinced that his plan is working and that he's a genius, so in his mind, he's reacts that way because he sincerely thinks Tom is interested in Daphne.

That 70's show seemed retro about gay acceptance because it took place in the 1970s.

One of the biggest reasons that I - unlike the vas majority of gay men, it seems - have never, ever had a problem with my being gay (it was never a crisis, or any issue, or something I wanted to change) is that Will and Grace started airing when I was 8 and I watched it right from the beginning. Nothing to do with it having openly gay characters, it was just advertising a lot during the commercials during "Friends" (my fav show at the time) and I thought ity might be a similar type of humour. Because of Will and Grace and it's depictions of it, homosexuality was completely normalized for me at a very young age and therefor a couple years later when I realised I was gay, it was no big deal to me.

3rd Rock from the Sun also had a cute gay episode where Dick Solomon wished he'd rather be gay than an alien.

Just a couple of comments. One, I think "Ellen" was so enamored of the "I'm gay" moment, that the show stopped being about anything else other than the lead character being gay. When a show narrows its focus to one situation, that's usually not a good idea. I would venture to guess that's what led to its cancellation. Not necessarily because the character came out, but because the show didn't move beyond coming out. The other thing I wanted to mention was that Eric's reaction to the gay kiss in "That 70's Show" may very likely have been a "70's" reaction because the show was set in that time period and the characters were meant to be products of their time?

Oh no, it was 100% because she was gay, the network admitted it proudly. The execs, producers also admitted it. Theres absolutely no doubt it was cancelled because she came out on the show. Network execs actually threatened her before she came out saying that if she did she would be terminated. Im pretty sure it's all in Ellens first or second book.. icr

The show became unwatchable. It was a funny hang out sitcom about friends in and around a bookshop and just because boring and preachy and all about Ellen's relationship with a woman who was just horribly miscast in the role. Oh and of course the boing girlfriend has an equally boring daughter.

It would be great to see more of these decade retrospectives. In particular, I'd like to see one for the '00s and the '10s.
