AFL fan my entire life but first time watching the IR series and I've gotta say, I'm hooked on the concept. The two games this year were fantastic, and the series will only gain momentum from here.
i find it incredible that we play in this sport against the irish when we dont even play the sport. we go from playing with an oval ball and the middle sticks being 6 points to a soccer-like ball and soccer goals, and our usual maximum scoring method being halved. its miraculous we dont get embarrassed and very impressive that we hold our own.
I've got to say, as an objective Englishman, I loved the International Rules series. However, Australia's conduct in this series was shocking. I felt for the Irish guys - but hope that one day the series will start up again!!
These are some players that shud have been there but were not due to other matches in Ireland. T Walsh,(Kerry) D. O Se (Kerry), S Ryan (Dublin) K. Whelan (Dublin, M Quirke (Kerry) (6'7 17.5 stone), M. Cussan (Cork) C. Cooper (Kerry) Dec. Sullivan (Kerry) D. Harte (Tyrone)
Its amazing how our Irish players have to adapt to the aussie rules game before this series, two weeks of training and we beat the aussies at their own game! Proud day to be Irish.
As an Irishman, I'm ashemed at the whinging from our lot. The irish coach Sean Boylan was coach of one of the dirtiest teams in GAA history. We are coming across as moaning, sore losers.
Dirty knackers. We stood up to them toe to toe, McGeeney gave one or two of the Aussies a good hiding and then the Aussies resorted to cheap shot elbows and taking Geraghty out of the game. What McGeeney said in that interview was totally correct.
next week, this will be the commentary. "Canty catches the ball from the backline he passes it off to Kernan, Kernan lets it off to Bradley whos travelling deep out near the 50. He passes it across to Cavanagh, Cavanagh kicks a long floating ball in the air in towards Donaghy, OH WHAT A CATCH!, Donaghy caught that beautifully,he sidesteps the aussie defender,OH ITS DANGER HERE FOR THE AUSSIES! OH WHAT A GOAL!!, HE RIFLES THE NET! (X5) His presence is really troubling the Aussies". "Unstoppable!"
Here mate if it doesnt matter how big i am come over here an say it to my face!!!Im heavily involved in the GAA and have met both teams and found most ur lads to be top blokes but I cud tell the ones who wer over for a fight..how ur not ashamed of them is beyond me!!
@Maddieleine The Australians do start a lot of the scuffles around the ground and I wonder if that's because of any sledging or what it is that goes on with the aussies. Because there's always a bit of a push and shove in the AFL, but the punches are rarely thrown.
The Aussies have a history of this, they did it to Peter Canavan in '99 and '00, Ciaran McDonald in '04 and now this. So its not a once off by the Aussies, it is a premeditated, calculated and sinister aspect of the way the international rules team acts when they realise they may be defeated by playing just football. Why do they do this when they could so easily just let their great football do the talking? Its nothing short of thuggery, you can't dress it up any other way.
If australia had more blokes like Tarrant, Buddy, Waite, Pavlich, Brennan and Fraser, the aussies would have won by even more. Tall, quick, strong, athletic and skillful blokes like that would absolutely dominate the irish and make it even more of a non-contest.
i agree. this is part of our national game and we play hard, tough AND FAIR. The only reason you irish are bagging the aussies is because you lost and you need to vent your anger.
the simple fact that the game is hybrid makes it difficult AND as it is more closely an GAA game, it is harder for the Irish viewers to differentiate between their national game and the international rules. for the Aussies, there is such a distinction between AFL and Int. Rules that we can accept the hard play and nationalistic pride etc as there is a greater divide between the game we watch each week and this Int. Rules game.
We're proud enough of our national games and every sport we play to tone down the aggression and leave with dignity here in ireland... we don't have a lot of players, we have no full time athletes in the game, and frankly, the thugs don't make it to county football level... there's a difference between being professional and acting it... it's a pity that the series may not run next year...
I'm certainly not crying I just dont feel it enhances our game in any way. It a our native sport a game played by amatures and thats where its strengths lie. I dont knock your game in any way it a fine tough sport but I will say that hurling blows both gaelic and aussie rules out of the water no questions asked its the stuff of legend.
the irish coach was pissed off about the fact that Gerathy was singled out for voilence during the week, and he just so happens to be the one in hospital, in my eyes he got a hard but fair tackle, he was unlucky. Graham is no soft touch, none of you guys would have fared no better in a tackle like that. but since this is the internet we can all pretend we're muscular giants so theres no point in arguing
i had expressed the belief that irish rugby professionals would put the aussies in their place when and if they met at the IWC. Unfortunately i have to say we were terrible. I think if it came down to pushing our weight around we would have been as well off sending out 15 graham geraghty's. What a shame.
the tackle by pierce was a hard, FAIR tackle that was well within the rules of the game. It was bitterly unfortunate that the irishman recieved a blow to his head as a result of landing awkwardly. however, these men know the dangers of playing contact sports, and it would be foolish to suggest otherwise.
yes they do tackle in the gaa but theres rules....(you can only attack the ball not the player with 1 hand) and you can only hit shoulder to shoulder...this way allows the teams to actually play the game!!!!!
the Irish always go on about how they put teachers and accountants on the field against professional athletes... gloatingly when they win, as an excuse when they lose. and the aussies go on about how the game favours the Irish: round ball, rectangular field and the 6-point goal is what a Gaelic footballer is used to, rather than the 3-point over that an Aussie Rules footballer would be more familiar with. & also how much the irish complain when aussies tackle- which is legal in this series.
If I were Aussie I wouldn't consider it a badge of honor that there are players put in hospital playing sport each week. As I am not proud of any player wearing an Irish shirt using his head to injure an opponent... no matter what the provocation. The two games really are poles apart. Making a compromise rules game between the two is like trying to make a compromise rules game between rugby and soccer... It really doesn't work. Its a shame but I think the whole thing will be canned.
I think the Irish will come out punching this time, throw a couple of your Olympic boxers in the squad if you are worried... I'm glad it's back , just pissed of I'm in the U.K this year and it is being played back home in Australia.
aussies probably would have beaten us anyway but its fairly difficult to win when you've only got fuck all interchange players left after the 1st quarter
We got to sort out the referees if it has any future. that's the biggest problem, the ozzies would not have done what they did if they new there was a possibility of them been punished (not just 15 mins in the sin bin). Its a pity that players of both codes are unlikely to get a opportunity to represent their countries again. We have a sport in which we can compete in boxing and strangely enough its appropriately called 'boxing' we can play rough but there has to be some rules.
lol hurling haha good one. i hope you werent serious!! if you cant take a bit of argy bargy (a lot of which u irish started) then dont play. we know that we are far greater than the irish, actually good the series was called off last time, means our players could concentrate on our national league and not flogging the woeful irish.
that type of tackle is legal and happens every weekend in the AFL casperld!! its not disgraceful at all... was a great pin the arms tackle more of the same this year i hope
If you guys have time you should take a look at these links "VFL Football 2nd Gaelic Test 1986 - Australia v Ireland". Great footage of what the game used to be about! Hell of alot less stupid racist comments too!!
little brutish by our aussies, but its a physical game and ireland's players were too weak and poorly trained to protect themselves adequately. this was one of the last times we sent our best players to play this crap.
lads of course we got hammered. these players are professional. why dont u aussies bring over 15 non professional aussie rules players. then we shud be evenly matched - at least physically.
so I suppose u think Australia started ALL the fights. If u do then u are denying the obvious coz the irish were just as rough against the aussies and lets not forget that player Gerity or whatever his name was.
Australia will do well in the next Olympics boxing catagory dats for sure...does it not mention a football somewhere in ur rules tho?its a match not a brawl if use wanted a brawl use shud of said,im 6'4 my brothers are 6'3 and 6'7 is ur lot want a fight, fight us!!!!
hey well said thejuice2003 its good to see some people keep things in perspective and not get caught up in the bitching. sad thing is with all this crap talk the skill shown by the aussie boys is goin un-noticed. they straight up where far more skilled in all aspects of the game.
@poltome i know the rules favour us. but the irish lads cant even tackle. they just havent been brought up lik dat. its a skill we dont possess. dats a big disadvantage. I for one would just love to see an aussie team picked from small clubs who have to work the next morning play us. and dont take this game too serious. its only an exhibition. have a fosters or sumin..........
cant have things both ways either you are less experienced because you are amature or you not, you cant have it when you want and then the opposite when you dont. the violence was equal on both sides take off those rose tinted glasses mate.
of course the irish would have to be little girls and blame the loss on how rough the game was. Grow up, we beat you, from what I saw the roughness came from both sides. Little girls just can't handle a few bumps and shit.
apparent? have you used the correct word? does this mean that all one has to do to witness one of these 'apparent' languages is merely talk to an aussie? i dont think so, however 2,500,000 irish people have a good grasp of irish and another 250,000 are fluent....furthermore our native language is officially recognised by the EU, more than one could say about your 200 endangered languages. drop it australian culture was wiped out a long time ago

HOWEVER, the punch ups and the rest are NOT part of the game and the aussies should NOT be proud that they were throwing the first punches. As for all of you who think that using crude language make you better/bigger than others... grow up and articulate your point of view (esp m412k and Si1enc), it can only add credence to your arguement.
why do aussies all of a sudden think just because they beat a team that is constructed of nearly all skillful players that thier the best fighters in the world....the irish came out to play football and look what the aussies did acted as if it was a boxing match...all i can say is id like to see these aussies up against the irish afl team they would get there heads kicked in (Ireland vs South Africa - Aussie Rules - Part 1) check it out!!!!!
ur not really objective are you. the tackle that knocked that "playmaker" for ireland was illegal and i dont condone it for a minute, but ireland pulled off some shocking tackles as well. they also participated in and started just as many fights. i like how the captain said if u wanna box then we will box. u irish wud get belted, especially by the likes of barry hall or ryan o'keefe. lol the coach said "that tuggery" haha who won the series by the way? haha GO AUSTRALIA!!!

Good to see the series is back this October.
the irish started a lot of the fights with little cheap shots, knees into the head and that sort of thing, but couldn't handle it when it got tougher
There is no 2007 series. Its been scrapped.
next week, this will be the commentary. "Canty catches the ball from the backline he passes it off to Kernan, Kernan lets it off to Bradley whos travelling deep out near the 50. I could almost feel the tears of the two at the end there.
and sheedy played for 12 years and has coached for 25 years totaling 37 years experience in a PROFESSIONAL sport, boylan has amature experience
u are wrong Ireland didnt have the availability of all of their players for the series as well so we have the same problem!
Here mate if it doesnt matter how big i am come over here an say it to my face!!!Im heavily involved in the GAA and have met both teams and found most ur lads to be top blokes but I cud tell the ones who wer over for a fight..how ur not ashamed of them is beyond me!!
i cant wait for the 2007 clash, hope its exactly the same as 2006.

@dc1823 DUH it is back, we won it in 2008 and we were too cheap to fly over last year. its on the 23rd and 30th
@RobertsNetworkCom no im from new zealand we both have more sheep than people
i agree. this is part of our national game and we play hard, tough AND FAIR. The only reason you irish are bagging the aussies is because you lost and you need to vent your anger.
Anyway it's good to see that the series is back.....because it is fucking awesome to watch! Go Collingwood!!!!

I once asked an Irish friend what International rules football was when he said he was going to a game, He described it as " a combination. Of Gae
austraias strength is tackling...that wasnt tackling...how does punching constitute tackling
love international rules, its all about the fights, thats all that matters

You swear ye beat us every year. Australia lead the series 7-6 with 14 test games won each

Hey hey hey Ladelz! If you can't do the time and the 9 month prison ship to an Aussie penal colony, don't do the crime! :D
lol that tackle that the guy went off in the stretcher for happens every game when we play our game.
yes they do tackle in the gaa but theres rules....(you can only attack the ball not the player with 1 hand) and you can only hit shoulder to shoulder...this way allows the teams to actually play the game!!!!!
I doubt it. Whelan would have done his usual disappearing act.
i did and I was impressed to see that the Irish can beat ye at every aspect of your own game!
82,000 at it, doubt they will get that the next day, to watch what is now a tame version of sarcastaball
hahaha the irish coach at the end is funny.. looks like he's bout to have a cry.they mustn't tackle in the GAA

@benkeays yeaaa.....like 08,tink we won both tests mate,in australia
so I suppose u think Australia started ALL the fights. If u do then u are denying the obvious coz the irish were just as rough against the aussies and lets not forget that player Gerity or whatever his name was.
good to see that the AUssies struggled to beat us at their own game, shows the attitude of amateur players!
Clarke, Keneally, McGrane, Earley......
kwwp dreaming! who won today?
As soon as the Irish lose the excuses start flowing

lol gerahty the golden boy!! got a text book pin the arms tackle.. welcome to the AFL
@poltome i know the rules favour us. but the irish lads cant even tackle. they just havent been brought up lik dat. its a skill we dont possess. dats a big disadvantage. I for one would just love to see an aussie team picked from small clubs who have to work the next morning play us. and dont take this game too serious. its only an exhibition. have a fosters or sumin..........
mcgeeney got taken out by gilbee and gilbee is a small fella lol
cant have things both ways either you are less experienced because you are amature or you not, you cant have it when you want and then the opposite when you dont. the violence was equal on both sides take off those rose tinted glasses mate.
sorry, i should not have said anything, just was having a wind up.
The Irish players aren't full time professionals they have other jobs!
of course the irish would have to be little girls and blame the loss on how rough the game was. Grow up, we beat you, from what I saw the roughness came from both sides. Little girls just can't handle a few bumps and shit.

Was at this game. Was a disgrace to watch.
this video has edited out a lot of the shit the aussies did giving out a false impression to the australian public i was at the game and the afl team caused all the hassle
thats what you get when you let convicts out on day release
punch ups sell tickets and get more viewers, and if anyone remembers chris johnsons high shot, OMG what a tackle, and then he leveled 2 other guys who were trying to hit him.
Fair play to the Aussies they battered us black and blue
haha sean boylen is funny at the end of the video looks like he's bout to have a cry...
girl, soft and whinge are thr first three words that come to mind when reading your post.
Brisbane Lions were offered a compromise game against thir local NRL side. The AFL refused on the grounds that the Lions players couldnt be expected to match Rugby League players for upper body strength and might get injured.
Hypocrites and cowards.
Why not put Australias top amateurs up against these gaelic footballers? Those guys in 05 and 06 were an embarrassment to Australians. Ive way more repsect for an underdog who keeps getting up.

should of had ciaran whelan in there. he would of sorted them out.
Thats a shame! Another chance for the Aussies to wipe the floor with the Irish is lost!!
YES ! I'm all for this hybrid sports, how about we mix basketball, rugby, volleyball throw in a cricket pitch, get a bride from a wedding to do a bouquet throw over her shoulder and throw in a few mental patients and we can call it... AFL !!!
@cormac71 bit harsh
Get in a ring where the real fighting's done then see who's the tough guys ;)
Well maybe if the Irish didn't talk so much shit in the lead up to the match this wouldn't happen!
When your spelling has improved reply back !
funny how we won the fights and then wehn we started playing football we smashed them then too. I guess Boylans training must not have worked. He was brought in to prep the irish on the rough stuff but he failed.

As for all of you who think that using crude language make you better/bigger than others... grow up and articulate your point of view (esp m412k and Si1enc), it can only add credence to your arguement.
this years scoreline says differant hahahaha
Muzzanator86 it's ok i understand u'd much rather sit on ur computer all day than play a real sport
why do aussies all of a sudden think just because they beat a team that is constructed of nearly all skillful players that thier the best fighters in the world....the irish came out to play football and look what the aussies did acted as if it was a boxing match...all i can say is id like to see these aussies up against the irish afl team they would get there heads kicked in (Ireland vs South Africa - Aussie Rules - Part 1) check it out!!!!!
