Redkaa I wish there was a league for this. As a football and AFL supporter, i can't get enough of International Rules. Takes the best elements from both sports and blends them into something really special
Daniel S I totally agree, but you do realize that this is actually a combination of AFL and Gaelic Football (not soccer), right? Unless by "football" you are referring to Gaelic football, in which case my comment is completely unnecessary lol.
dexistence19 no he means that Gaelic is a mixture between afl and soccer I think, he obviously doesn't know that international rules is different to Gaelic
Well its only played once a year between two national teams and two different sports. The Irish team are gaelic footballers and the aussies are Aussie rules players. The game they play is a mixture of the two sports.Soccer is not apart of it though, but gaelic football has characteristics of soccer thats what you see here
One day someone said "lets take Rugby Union, Aussie Rules and Soccer and lets put all those together and throw in some Gaelic Football rules for fun" and this awesome sport was born. I just wish that other countries would start playing this XD
Kevin Meyer Honestly, it's the future of both codes internationally if they would get over certain issues and export this game ruthlessly to all corners of the globe. There are so many expats that play both codes in every land, America particularly and square fields are much more common worldwide. Both leagues would do well to turn this game into a more competitive version of IRB sevens, IMO.
Square fields, but much smaller than a gaa pitch.A GAA pitch. You could put too soccer pitchs side by side. The AFL promotes aussie rules and thts the game they want played internationally not this bastard game. The GAA has two sports which they want to promote not this game.Promoting this game is only going to confuse people it will not promote the games.People will not want to play gaelic or aussie rules ,but this hybrid instead which is fine, but its not what these associations are for.The problem for the GAA is two fold is it can only do it with football not hurling so hurling would be forgotten about second the players would have to be full time if they are going to play abroad and theGAA is amateur and prides itself on being amateur
Soccer and rugby have nothing to do with it.Its a hybrid of gaelic football and australian football so the top players in each code could represent their country since neither is played outside their countries at a high level
This is not gaelic football its a crossover between Gaelic and aussie rules.Search for all ireland football final 2017 thats the world cup of gaelic football even though its just ireland dias
At half time my galic club when on at half time i scored but crashed heads with somebody when i stood up everbody started claping and i went up on the big screen one off the best moments ever in my life
as a canadian we get about 2 afl matches a week here. i think its quite an exciting game. this international rules game almost seems better though. i wish canada or other countries would play this. i like how it combines the physical/big man nature of AFL with goalies and soccer-type stuff from gaelic rugby. great event. will try to find a stream for 2015. cheers to all the fans on both sides. hope this event continues and maybe grows into something bigger...???
I too would love to see Canada USA and Britain field teams in this, it would then be more international. I've also seen some comments from Argentina, maybe they'd join in too!
Fair play to the Aussies, put out something close to their best side and it showed in their interplay. Good skills and space appreciation and most importantly discipline, The fitness levels are the key though Pro's Vs Amatuers should always only be one winner. The GAA lads have come on light years in terms of their fitness levels, but there's a ceiling when you have day jobs that take priority and you can see it in the body shapes of the players form both sides.. IR is one of those things where if it's allowed to die off we'll only really appreciate it's value when it's gone. Really needs to be a three game series though, so teams can get into it....
Our boys would adapt to a sherrin handy enough I believe, most Irish young lads are multidisciplinary in that they play a wide variety of sports into teenage years so a lot would have rugby backgrounds as well (given their sizes mainly as backs). Yep I know larger footie, but not too dissimilar in kicking actions nowadays (a lot players use Aussie Rule kicking style at every level now). I think we've seen that with the AFL Irish imports, it's not the footie that is the major adjustment it's changing to a professional mindset where your sport is your job and the discipline's required. Fitness/Stamina is the major issue at IR level for us though, three weeks together pre matches is not enough to make up the gap. The main barrier 'amateurism' is a bastion of the GAA, so would need a fundamental change in attitude at the top level of Gaelic Games to see that happen. Would love to see it happen, but there are major potential downsides to that happening. I don't know how familiar you are with GAA structure in Ireland. Basically kids play at school, for local clubs, then their native county (of which there are 32 in Island of Ireland). Even in the amateur era there are dominant counties in both Gaelic Football and Hurling. If the game went professional then these counties would continue to dominate and also demand most of the revenue which over time would mean the collapse of the games in weaker counties.
+Ronan Byrne Professionalism on a full time basis is a non runner there isn't the money.Take your average county board with an average budget of 1million they would have to pay the average industrial wage to a squad of 25 players of 40000 euro so there entire budget would have to go on paying the players.Only 4 counties at most could do this.Yes you could have semi professionalism and a match fee for the all ireland finals. You have dual counties to consider as well not even dublin could field professional teams in football and hurling
+ijk240695 Intercounty Gaelic footballers are not paid, but otherwise they train like professionals so they would probably completely obliterate a vafa team
Ronan Byrne Completely agree, As an Australian it's a bit unfair when professional Aussie Rules players put out your full strength squad while you Irish lads actually have part time jobs. Still it's great to watch a wierd mix of World Football (soccer), Aussie Football, Gaelic Football and rugby
6 points for a goal in the back of the net (Can be kicked or thrown), 3 points for a kick over the crossbar but between the posts, 1 point for a kick between the goalposts and the point post.
Lik others are saying there should be a series thing of this all the best soccer/football/FIFA players with all the best footy players and also add the best gridiron and rugby players, spread them out evenly maybe add a couple rules that apply to both rugby and gridiron and then this game would attract many fans from all around the world! Me being a fan of most sports (although NBA is my favourite) this would be majorly enjoyable!
Because nobody knows its a hybrid sport of gaelic and australian football unless you are familiar with one of these its hard to explain it.I recommend looking at gaelic irish football rules explained by ninh ly and his australian football video.Basically the ball is a gaelicfootball(not soccer) the field is gaelic the goal posts are basically gaelic ,but they are two extra posts there aussie. The tackle is aussie the mark is aussie the playing time is a mixture of the two. They are a few other rules from neither code.Handling rules are mostly aussie and travelling rules are both. They change the rules quite often
+Dimp 992 International Rules Football (a.k.a. Compromise Rules Football). It's a combination of Gaelic Football and Australian Football, and is only played once a year (between an Irish team which usually play Gaelic and an Australian team which usually play AFL), so none of the players are that familiar with the game. It's weird seeing all these players who have never played with each other. At the the end with clarko and Selwood was strange as well
3:36 Sounds like something out of a Dr. Seuss book.
Made my day that comment did :D
Campbell Bryant hahahah
Chicken.

I miss these games, I hope they can soon resume.
Nice rhyming from the Australian commentator when Australia had possession in the second quarter. The whole; Robbie Gray, Stevie J and McVeigh play!
To be fair, it's really pros v part-timers, as our Gaelic footballers aren't professional, they have jobs and the afl lads are pro.
Cry more. Can’t accept the fact that another nation outlasts you in a sport that you are very passionate about
It's 90% Gaelic football so Ireland should be more dominant
Afl players picked this sport up in a couple weeks and beat you at it 😂
Awesome game with an awesome atmosphere at Subi. Would love to see this at a full house at Optus Stadium one day

really great to see the irish getting a bit more physical!

If only Ireland played their best team...
Gooch Cooper, Bernard Brogan, Diarmuid Connolly, Cillian O'Connor
Make this as a league it would be good as
I LOVE how they played men at work instead of the national anthem 😂😂😂😂😂
I like the rule where if you are on the ground (on all fours) you cannot pick the ball up and go.
Who Australian here?
This is fucken awesome international rules really needs to be international
This should be an Olympic sport
that was a bit of a comeback
how good is fletcher
Sick
Such a tougher game than AFL
Who would Connor Mckenna play for? Cause he's Irish, but he plays AFL, so which side would he choose?
He would be on Ireland since he is an Irish citizen.
I was there❤️
Mat Ryan as GK
Who is the Australian goal keeper
Dustin Fletcher
Qué demonios es esto?

this sport is more spettacular in the worlld sorry forma. my english

awesome pick up 3:50
It was very good, because it was an aussie. In gaelic football you can not pick the ball up with your hands,so that pick up is fairly common
this is boss
So is this basically Aussie rules combined with Gaelic Football
WINGAARRD
8:16 that Irish bloke though he could pull that off😂
good old aussie footy players. they're just so fit lol. they're just winging the rules ahah
what sport is that?
Dimp 992 Gaelic Football. Mix between Soccer and AFL.
BreezyAustralian And a bit of rugby.
ok
Dimp 992 Thats not true. This is mix between Gaelic Football and Aussie Rules Football. The national sports of Ireland and Australia.
+Dimp 992 International Rules Football (a.k.a. Compromise Rules Football). Start the series again why did it stop?
The Aussies tend to punch too many Irish heads
Covid. We were meant to have a series in 2020 and 2022, but they were postponed. Haven't heard anything since then though.
Goals should've been 9 points instead of only 6, seems like if it's only 6 the value's not worth the risk

YEAA WINGARD
are these goalkeepers afl/gaa players? both looked a bit clumsy compared to soccer keepers. have they thought of recruiting soccer keepers? the job seems to be exactly the same.
For austrailia the goal keeper was Dustin Fletcher > Bomber legend
It's a rep match solely between the AFL and GAA - they're not going to recruit anyone outside of either league for it.
Old man
GAA had only one Irish afl player from brisbane
AFL doesn't have a goalkeeper so he's just an outfield player. Paddy O'Rourke who's in nets for Ireland plays in goal for his county but outfield for his club.
Why would they 'recruit' soccer goalkeepers, this is a match between the Irish Gaelic football team and the Australian AFL team.
Wouldn't a soccer goalkeeper be better in this scenario - surely Matt Ryan should be selected if available or the best aussie keeper
Yes but no soccer player's contract will allow them to play for either the GAA or the AFL. They wouldn't even be released for national soccer if it wasn't a FIFA requirement.
How does scoring work?
If one goes over the soccer net it is 3 points in soccer net is 6 points and the other side goals are just 1 point
If the ball goes into the net (like the soccer goal) its 6 points and is called a "goal". If it goes over the crossbar (the goal) with the net but between the 2 middle poles, its 3 points and is called an "over". If it goes between the outer and inner poles on both sides its 1 point and is called a "behind". Anything outside of the those poles is worth nothing and is called a "wide"
GAELIC NOT FECKIN SOCCER
Is this Gaelic fooball
+Nathan Neville I know now
Over soccer net is 3 points in soccer net is 6 points and the outside poles are just 1 point
GAELIC FOOTBALL NET
Its a gaelic net
is this basketball, soccer, or rugby?
Okay firstly it isn't gaelic football. Its called international rules. But basketball??? Whot
rorylr When i posted this i was making a joke
Luciano Olmos yeah i responding more to the other person
No its a mix of gaelic football and australian football.
what is this sport?
Mixture between Gaelic Football (Ireland) and Aussie rules ( Australia), just a small friendly they do some years
Half Irish Gaelic Football, and half Australian Rules Football. (AFL) Australia vs Ireland every year, I think in November or December.
Imagine being the Irish goalie and realising pretty early on aussies weren’t shooting for 6 🤣🤣
Its a rugby...its a football...its a basketball.....no mate ...its AFL
No it's international rules

Marchellino gerald The soccer players won't make it past the first quarter.
BreezyAustralian wut..... football (soccer) requires way higher fitness than afl/rugby

Its gaelic football and aussie rules soccer has nothing to do with it
Soccer 😂
This is how Australia should play every game no excuse most of them playing do this for there living
So this is basically afl with a soccer ball on rugby field? haha that's kinda weird
It's a Gaelic football actually.
Seán Leahy Tell me the differences
***** Different size, weight and texture.
DazzerPazzer None of that, not everyone is into the same sport. No sport is really superior to any other sport.
DazzerPazzer Firstly "Gaa" is not a sport. Hurling and Gaelic football are.
Second the it's your opinion that AFL is bad, its the opinion of a majority of Australians that is is great so that's not up to you to decide. I happen to prefer Hurling and Gaelic football but Aussie Rules is still a good sport.
I would prefer to see an Australian and irish team in Gaelic football and aussie rules rather than mix the two sports although it is very entertaining
Use an afl ball and we'll see the differences between the scores. Aus would flog Ireland
Then it would be Australian football, not International rules....
***** Are you being sarcastic?
***** Oh grand, wasn't sure :)
+Maurice Buren but having a rectangle field and using a soccer ball isn't too much like soccer??
Oh and can't forget the fact that they have goalies :)
they should scrap this and bring back state of origin
If they got rid of the stupid overs post this would be really good game
Australia should just get a soccer goal keeper. Would suck for the afl player who has to play goal keeper
That would be defeating the purpose of the excercise. There would be no point to the whole excercise if you started including players from sports that already have loads of international competition.
ninjo thats incredibly stupid. This is a crossover between the gaelic footballers of ireland and the aussie rules footballers soccer has nothing to with it
