Cetaceans are majestic, intelligent, beautiful creatures that are wonderful to see in their natural habitat. Edit: I love my pinnipeds and aquatic mustelids as well. All are awesome.
"Must-do" things in Monterey in addition to visiting the world-class Aquarium: rent a kayak and 10-min paddle to the Coast Guard jetty separating the bay from the inner harbor. You will quickly be surrounded by hundreds of sea lions. Keep a safe distance but all you have to do is sit there and they will come right up to you barking and jumping out of the water. Also do a whale watching tour. Eat and drink well at Gianni's Pizza and/or Monterey Fish House, stay at the Tides Hotel on Del Monte Beach, then bike ride 17-mile drive, take tons photos at Pt. Lobos and play golf at Pacific Grove. On the way home, grab some Pomegranate Wine at Casa de Fruta, then have lunch at Pea Soup Anderson's. Trust me its a a proven plan :)
Watching these animals, I believe that this is what God intended for Eden . He gave Adam the task of naming them. I believe that means He intended us to watch and enjoy them. I am grateful that after the fall, we were allowed to keep that task.
